Set up the Sonos Era 100 in the Sonos app while your phone or tablet is connected to your home Wi‑Fi. New systems use the app’s speaker-setup flow; existing systems use Settings > Add Speaker or Component. After Wi‑Fi setup, you can pair Bluetooth. Place the speaker where it will stay, then run Trueplay: quick tuning works on iOS and Android with the Era 100’s built-in microphones, while advanced tuning uses an iOS device microphone and samples more of the room.

What you need before starting

The Era 100’s first configuration is a Wi‑Fi setup performed in the Sonos app. Bluetooth is an additional playback method, not a replacement for putting the speaker on your Sonos system first.

  • Era 100 and power: Put the speaker near its intended location and within reach of a nearby power outlet.
  • Mobile device: Use a compatible iOS or Android phone or tablet with the latest Sonos app available for that device.
  • Home network: Keep the mobile device on the Wi‑Fi network you want the speaker to use during setup.
  • Sonos account: A new system requires creating or signing in to a Sonos account. An existing system uses the account and system already configured in the app.
  • Quiet room for tuning: Trueplay works best when background noise is minimized. You can postpone tuning until the speaker is in its final position.

Supported Wi‑Fi networks

Sonos lists support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks using 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax broadcast-capable routers, including Wi‑Fi 6. Your phone or tablet must be connected to the same home network during the initial setup. If your router hides or isolates devices from one another, the app may not be able to discover the speaker even though both devices appear connected.

Sonos Era 100 SL - Black (Pack of 2)
  • The information below is per-pack only
  • Dual angled tweeters and a powerful midwoofer deliver rich, balanced stereo sound with deep bass.
  • The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
  • Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.
  • Go from unboxing to incredible sound in minutes with a quick plug-in and the Sonos app
  1. Choose a temporary position. Set the speaker near its eventual location, with at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) of clearance behind it if it is next to a wall or on a shelf. Do not worry about final sound tuning yet.
  2. Connect power. Plug the Era 100 into a nearby outlet and wait for it to start.
  3. Prepare the mobile device. Install or open the latest Sonos app on a compatible iOS or Android phone or tablet. Confirm that the device is connected to the intended home Wi‑Fi network rather than cellular data or a guest network.
  4. Start speaker setup. In the app, choose the option to set up a speaker or component. The app searches for the Era 100 and displays the detected speaker when it is available.
  5. Create or sign in to your account. Follow the account prompts. The account associates the speaker with this Sonos system and lets the app manage it later.
  6. Select the detected Era 100. Continue through each in-app instruction, including any requested permissions or network confirmation. Keep the phone close to the speaker while the process completes.
  7. Finish before changing playback methods. Wait until the app shows the Era 100 in the system. Wi‑Fi setup must be complete before you attempt Bluetooth pairing.

The exact wording of buttons can change as the Sonos app is updated, but the distinction remains: a new system starts with the app’s speaker/component setup choice and an account, then claims the detected speaker.

Add Era 100 to an existing Sonos system

If you already use Sonos, do not create a second system for the new speaker. Add it to the existing one from the app.

  1. Place and power the Era 100 close to its intended room, leaving the required rear clearance if it is against a wall or shelf.
  2. Open the Sonos app on an iOS or Android phone or tablet connected to the same home Wi‑Fi as the existing system.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Select Add Speaker or Component.
  5. Follow the app’s discovery and configuration prompts, selecting the Era 100 when it appears.
  6. Wait for the app to confirm that the speaker belongs to the existing system before moving it or starting playback.

Adding the speaker this way preserves the existing system rather than creating a separate account or household. If the Era 100 does not appear, work through the discovery checks below before repeating the process.

Where to place the Era 100

Sonos describes the Era 100 as suitable for a bookshelf, counter, desk, or nightstand. The surface and nearby boundaries affect how sound reflects, so placement should be settled before running Trueplay.

Required clearance

Leave at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) behind the speaker when it sits next to a wall or on a shelf. This is a minimum rear gap, not a recommendation to wedge the cabinet tightly into a corner.

Practical placement checks

  • Use a stable, level surface that can support the speaker without vibration or wobbling.
  • Keep the front of the speaker unobstructed by books, décor, curtains, or a monitor.
  • Do not tune it in a temporary spot and then move it to a different shelf; the room correction reflects the original position.
  • If you later move the speaker or change its configuration, plan to run Trueplay again.

Tune the Era 100 with Trueplay

Trueplay measures how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, then fine tunes the Sonos speaker so it sounds appropriate for its placement. Sonos describes a tuning session as taking approximately three minutes; that is an estimate for the tuning process, not a guarantee for the entire setup.

Choose between quick and advanced tuning

Method Compatible device Microphone used How it samples the room Best use
Quick tuning iOS or Android Era 100’s built-in microphones Simpler, speaker-based measurement through the app Fast correction when you use Android or want the least movement
Advanced tuning iOS only Microphone in the iPhone or iPad You move around the room so the app samples more listening positions More complete room sampling when an iOS device is available

Android users can use quick tuning on an Era 100. Sonos does not support advanced Trueplay on Android, so the advanced option may not appear on an Android device.

Run quick Trueplay on iOS or Android

  1. Put the Era 100 in its final listening position and make sure its microphone switch is on. The switch must be enabled for features that use the speaker’s built-in microphones.
  2. Open the Sonos app and open the Era 100’s room or product settings.
  3. Choose the Trueplay tuning option and select the quick method when the app presents a choice.
  4. Start the measurement and remain quiet while the speaker plays its test sound. Do not change the volume during this part.
  5. Wait for the app to confirm completion, then listen normally. If the result is not retained, repeat the process with less background noise and with the speaker’s microphone switch still on.

Run advanced Trueplay with an iPhone or iPad

  1. Place the Era 100 permanently, turn on its microphone switch, and close sources of avoidable noise such as television audio, music, fans, or conversations.
  2. Open the Sonos app on a compatible iOS device and select the Era 100’s Trueplay tuning option.
  3. Choose advanced tuning and grant the app microphone access if iOS requests it. Advanced tuning uses the mobile device’s microphone rather than the speaker’s built-in microphones.
  4. Begin the test. Hold the iOS device as directed by the app and move through as much of the room as practical, covering the normal listening area instead of standing in one place.
  5. Do not alter the playback volume or interrupt the test sound. Complete the movement pattern until the app reports that tuning is finished.

Advanced tuning is not available on Android. If you only have an Android device, quick tuning is the supported Era 100 option.

  • The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.

When to tune again

Repeat Trueplay after moving the speaker, changing the room position, or changing its configuration. A correction made for a bookshelf will not necessarily suit a desk or a different room, because the reflected sound field has changed.

Pair Bluetooth after Wi‑Fi setup

Once the Era 100 has completed Sonos Wi‑Fi setup, it can also play audio from a paired Bluetooth device. Treat Bluetooth as an additional playback route: pairing does not configure the speaker for the Sonos system and cannot replace the initial app-based Wi‑Fi process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Complete either the new-system setup or the Settings > Add Speaker or Component flow first.
  2. On the phone, tablet, or other Bluetooth source, open its Bluetooth settings and begin device discovery.
  3. Select the Era 100 when it appears and accept the pairing request.
  4. Start playback from the paired device. Return to the Sonos app when you want to use Sonos rooms, services, or system playback.

Optional wired connections through USB-C

The Era 100’s USB-C port is for optional accessories, not a requirement for Wi‑Fi setup or Trueplay.

Accessory What it adds Typical use Needed for ordinary setup?
Sonos Line-In Adapter Wired line-in An audio source such as a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, CD player, or projector No
Sonos Combo Adapter Line-in plus Ethernet A wired audio source, or Ethernet when you prefer a network cable No

These adapters are sold separately. Choose the Line-In Adapter when you only need an analog source; choose the Combo Adapter when you also want Ethernet. Neither accessory is necessary to connect the Era 100 to Wi‑Fi, run quick or advanced Trueplay, or use Bluetooth after setup.

When Ethernet is useful

Wi‑Fi is the normal setup path. Ethernet through the Combo Adapter is an alternative when a wired connection is preferred, for example in a location where wireless coverage is unstable. Connect the wired network only after confirming that the adapter and cable can reach the router or network switch; the app-based setup steps still establish the speaker in the Sonos system.

Troubleshoot discovery and setup problems

The app cannot find the Era 100

  • Confirm the speaker is powered and has finished starting.
  • Check that the phone or tablet is on the intended home Wi‑Fi, not cellular data or an isolated guest network.
  • Move the mobile device close to the speaker and retry the discovery step.
  • Verify that the router is broadcasting a supported 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network and is not blocking device-to-device communication.
  • For an existing system, return to Settings > Add Speaker or Component instead of starting a new system.
  • Close and reopen the Sonos app, then repeat the appropriate setup path. If the speaker was previously associated with another system, remove that conflict through the app’s prompts rather than creating duplicate systems.

Setup starts but fails during Wi‑Fi configuration

  • Keep the phone on the same network throughout setup; switching networks midway can make the speaker disappear.
  • Move the Era 100 temporarily nearer the router, complete setup, and then return it to the final room.
  • Check whether the router uses client isolation, a captive portal, or a guest-network policy that prevents local devices from communicating.
  • If wireless coverage remains unreliable in the final room, consider the Combo Adapter for Ethernet rather than treating Bluetooth as a network substitute.

Trueplay will not start or gives an incomplete result

  • Turn on the Era 100’s microphone switch. Quick tuning cannot use the built-in microphones while that switch is off.
  • On iOS, allow the Sonos app to use the device microphone for advanced tuning.
  • Reduce background noise and stop playback from other sources during the measurement.
  • For advanced tuning, move through the room as requested instead of remaining at one listening position.
  • Do not touch the volume controls while the test sound is playing.
  • Run the process again after the speaker is placed on its final surface.

Bluetooth works but the speaker is missing from Sonos

Bluetooth pairing can succeed even when the Sonos system setup has not been completed. Disconnect or pause Bluetooth, return to the Sonos app, and finish the Wi‑Fi setup or existing-system add flow. Only then use Bluetooth as the alternate source.

A complete setup checklist

  • Era 100 is powered from a nearby outlet.
  • Phone or tablet runs the latest Sonos app and is connected to the intended home Wi‑Fi.
  • New system: speaker/component setup was selected and a Sonos account was created or used.
  • Existing system: Settings > Add Speaker or Component was used.
  • Router provides a supported, broadcast-capable 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network; Wi‑Fi 6 is supported.
  • Speaker has at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) behind it when next to a wall or shelf.
  • Final placement was chosen before tuning.
  • Microphone switch is on for quick tuning.
  • Quick Trueplay is used on iOS or Android, or advanced Trueplay is used on iOS.
  • Room is quiet, the tuning volume is left alone, and advanced tuning covers the listening area.
  • Trueplay is repeated after moving the speaker or changing its configuration.
  • Bluetooth is paired only after Wi‑Fi setup is complete.
  • Line-In or Combo Adapter is added only when a wired source or Ethernet connection is actually needed.

Which setup choices matter most?

If your situation is… Use this path Reason
First Sonos product New speaker/component setup in the app Creates or signs in to the account and establishes the new system
You already have a Sonos system Settings > Add Speaker or Component Adds the Era 100 to the current system instead of creating another one
You use Android Quick Trueplay Uses Era 100 microphones; advanced Trueplay is iOS-only
You use iPhone or iPad and want broader room sampling Advanced Trueplay Uses the mobile microphone while you move through the room
Wireless coverage is unreliable where the speaker will stay Wi‑Fi first, then optional Ethernet through the Combo Adapter Ethernet is an alternate network connection; Bluetooth does not replace Sonos setup
You need a turntable, CD player, or projector input Line-In Adapter, or Combo Adapter if Ethernet is also wanted USB-C accessories add line-in; they are not required for ordinary setup

For most owners, the correct order is simple: connect the Era 100 to Wi‑Fi in the Sonos app, place it permanently, tune it with the Trueplay method supported by your device, and only then add Bluetooth or optional wired sources.
