The Sonos Era 100 is a compact, powered Wi‑Fi speaker for room listening. It can also stream over Bluetooth 5.3 and AirPlay 2, but it must first be configured on Wi‑Fi with the Sonos app. That requirement, plus the speaker’s lack of a built-in 3.5 mm jack and its stated line-in restriction for television, determines whether it is a good buy for you.

Era 100 at a glance

Question Answer
Primary connection Wi‑Fi through the Sonos app; compatible networks include 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and Wi‑Fi 6 routers.
Other sources Bluetooth 5.3 and Apple AirPlay 2 after Wi‑Fi setup.
Single-speaker use Yes. One Era 100 can play on its own.
Stereo upgrade Two matching Era 100 speakers can be bonded as a Wi‑Fi stereo pair.
Home theater Sonos lists it as a rear speaker option with Ray, Beam, Arc Ultra or Amp in a compatible Sonos system.
Wired audio USB‑C line-in requires the separately sold Sonos Line-In Adapter and a 3.5 mm auxiliary cable.
Direct TV input No. Sonos says the line-in connection is not intended for TV.
Dimensions and weight 7.19 × 4.72 × 5.14 inches; 4.45 lb.
Power lead Six-foot cable and a standard electrical outlet are required.
U.S. listed price $219 on Sonos’s U.S. product page accessed in 2026; price and availability can change.

The Era 100 is therefore best understood as a networked room speaker that happens to accept Bluetooth, not as a portable Bluetooth speaker or a TV soundbar.

What the Sonos Era 100 can do

Stream music over Wi‑Fi

Wi‑Fi is the Era 100’s primary listening route. Sonos requires you to add the speaker to a Wi‑Fi network with the current Sonos app before it will play audio. The published compatibility includes both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks and Wi‑Fi 6 routers. You need an internet connection during normal setup and a compatible phone or tablet running the app.

Once configured, Wi‑Fi enables Sonos system features such as grouping rooms and creating a stereo pair. It also avoids the short range and one-device-at-a-time behavior normally associated with Bluetooth. The speaker still needs to remain connected to mains power; it has no battery mode listed by Sonos.

Sonos Era 100 - Black - Wireless, Alexa Enabled Smart Speaker | WiFi | Bluetooth | Pair for Stereo or Surround | 47% faster processor | Next-gen dual-tweeter acoustic architecture
  • Powered by a 47% faster processor, the next-gen dual-tweeter acoustic architecture produces detailed stereo separation while a 25% larger midwoofer deepens the bass.¹
  • Place this speaker anywhere and everywhere you want to listen. The compact design fits beautifully on your bookshelf, kitchen counter, desk, or nightstand.
  • Stream from all your favorite services over WiFi. Pair a Bluetooth device with the press of a button. Connect a turntable or other audio source using an auxiliary cable and the Sonos Line-In Adapter.²
  • Go from unboxing to unbelievable sound in just a few minutes. Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app.
  • With a tap in the Sonos app, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the speaker’s EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.

Use Bluetooth 5.3 after setup

Bluetooth 5.3 lets a phone, tablet or other compatible source send audio directly to the Era 100. This is useful for content that is not available through your usual music services or for visitors who do not use your Sonos system. Bluetooth does not remove the initial Wi‑Fi requirement: Sonos explicitly requires app-based Wi‑Fi setup before the speaker will play audio.

Play from Apple devices with AirPlay 2

AirPlay 2 support provides another source option for compatible Apple devices. It is separate from Bluetooth and is most useful when your household already uses Apple’s casting controls. AirPlay availability depends on the sending device and its software; the Era 100 still has to be configured in the Sonos app first.

Control playback on the speaker or in software

Touch controls on the top handle play and pause, skipping, volume and mute, as well as grouping with other Sonos rooms. The Sonos app supplies setup, room management and system controls. Sonos also lists Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa. Voice features are not universal: service availability varies by country and language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A physical microphone switch on the rear disconnects power to the microphone hardware. That is a hardware-level way to disable the built-in microphone rather than merely muting a software setting. If you turn the switch off, voice features that depend on the microphone cannot respond until it is switched back on.

Expand to stereo or surround

A second, matching Era 100 can be bonded over Wi‑Fi as a stereo pair. The two speakers then operate as left and right channels, which is the relevant upgrade if you want more separation than one cabinet can provide. Buying the second unit substantially increases the system cost, so treat stereo as an optional expansion rather than an assumption about the single-speaker price.

Sonos Era 100 SL - Black (Pack of 2)
  • The information below is per-pack only
  • Dual angled tweeters and a powerful midwoofer deliver rich, balanced stereo sound with deep bass.
  • The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
  • Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.
  • Go from unboxing to incredible sound in minutes with a quick plug-in and the Sonos app

Sonos also lists the Era 100 as a rear speaker with Ray, Beam, Arc Ultra or Amp in a compatible Sonos home-theater system. Compatibility and current setup requirements should be checked for the exact products you own. This is a role inside a Sonos theater configuration, not evidence that the Era 100 accepts a television signal by itself.

Add a turntable or other analog source with an adapter

The Era 100 has no simple built-in 3.5 mm input. Its USB‑C line-in path needs a Sonos Line-In Adapter plus a 3.5 mm auxiliary cable, both sold separately. The adapter can serve a turntable with the appropriate output or another line-level source. Turntables that require a phono preamp still need that requirement handled separately; the available materials do not specify a built-in phono stage.

What it cannot do, and assumptions to avoid

It is not a direct TV speaker

Sonos’s product-page footnote states: “This type of connection is not intended for TV.” Do not connect a television to the Era 100’s USB‑C line-in and expect it to function as a soundbar. If your goal is television audio, evaluate a compatible Sonos home-theater arrangement and its supported products instead. The Era 100 can be listed as a rear speaker in such a system, but it is not the television’s direct input device.

It cannot operate as an unconfigured Bluetooth-only speaker

A buyer cannot open the box, skip the Sonos app and use Bluetooth alone. The required sequence is Wi‑Fi connection, app setup and then Bluetooth playback. This matters in guest rooms, temporary spaces and locations where you cannot access the local network.

Analog connectivity is an extra purchase

The adapter and auxiliary cable are not included as a built-in analog solution. Sonos does not state a current adapter price in the product information summarized here, so budget for two separately sold accessories and verify their local prices before ordering.

Voice control depends on location and language

The presence of a microphone and a listed assistant does not guarantee that every voice service works where you live. Sonos says availability varies by language and country. Check support for your region before making voice control a purchase requirement.

Manufacturer sound claims are not independent tests

Sonos describes stereo separation and deep bass, and says the Era 100 has a woofer 25 percent larger than the Sonos One. Those are manufacturer claims, not results from a controlled independent listening comparison. The reviewed product materials do not provide standardized measurements, blind tests or named customer research, so use configuration, compatibility and placement—not an assumed sonic ranking—to compare speakers.

How to set up an Era 100

  1. Choose a powered location. Put the speaker near an electrical outlet on a stable surface such as a bookshelf, kitchen counter, desk or nightstand. Leave enough room to reach the six-foot power cable and the rear microphone switch.
  2. Install the current Sonos app. Use a compatible phone or tablet and make sure it can join the Wi‑Fi network you intend to use.
  3. Connect power. Plug in the Era 100 and wait for it to indicate that it is ready for setup.
  4. Open the app and add the product. Follow the app’s add-product flow, grant the requested local-network permissions and select the correct household Wi‑Fi network.
  5. Finish room and account settings. Give the speaker a room name, apply any available software update and confirm that the app can start playback.
  6. Test the source you plan to use. Start with Wi‑Fi playback. If you need Bluetooth, enable Bluetooth on the phone, select the Era 100 and begin playback only after the Wi‑Fi setup has completed.
  7. Set privacy and voice options. Leave the rear microphone switch on only if you intend to use voice services. Turn it off to disconnect power to the microphone hardware.

The exact screens can change as the Sonos app is updated, but the essential prerequisites do not: mains power, an internet-connected Wi‑Fi network, the current app and a compatible mobile device.

Connecting a turntable: what you need

Use this checklist before buying the speaker for vinyl:

  • One Sonos Era 100.
  • One Sonos Line-In Adapter.
  • One 3.5 mm auxiliary cable.
  • A turntable with the appropriate line-level output, or a separate phono preamp if the turntable requires one.
  • A nearby power outlet and an already configured Sonos Wi‑Fi system.
  1. Complete normal Wi‑Fi setup in the Sonos app.
  2. Connect the Line-In Adapter to the Era 100’s USB‑C port.
  3. Connect the auxiliary cable from the source’s line output to the adapter.
  4. Select the line-in source in the Sonos app and start playback.
  5. Keep the television out of this signal path; Sonos says the connection is not intended for TV.

Placement, size and everyday practicalities

The cabinet measures 7.19 × 4.72 × 5.14 inches and weighs 4.45 lb. Those dimensions suit a bookshelf, counter, desk or nightstand, but the speaker still needs a permanent power connection. Its six-foot cable gives some flexibility, although an outlet may determine the final position.

An optional Sonos Era 100 wall mount is available as an accessory. Confirm that a mount is specifically compatible with the Era 100 and check current availability before purchasing. Mounting can save shelf space, but it does not change the speaker’s Wi‑Fi, power or app requirements.

Sonos lists idle energy consumption of 1.8 watts. That figure is the manufacturer’s stated idle value; it is not a whole-house annual energy estimate and will vary with operating conditions.

Who should buy one

A strong fit

  • You want a compact powered speaker that can join a broader Sonos multiroom system.
  • You are comfortable completing app-based Wi‑Fi setup and keeping the speaker on mains power.
  • You want Wi‑Fi streaming with Bluetooth 5.3 and AirPlay 2 as additional source choices.
  • You may later add a matching unit for stereo or use the speaker as a supported rear channel in a Sonos theater system.
  • You value a physical microphone switch and are willing to check whether voice services work in your language and country.

A weak fit

  • You need a speaker that accepts television audio directly.
  • You expect an included 3.5 mm analog jack for a turntable.
  • You need Bluetooth playback immediately, without Wi‑Fi or the Sonos app.
  • You want a battery-powered speaker for outdoor or travel use.
  • You require a voice assistant that is unavailable in your region or language.

How to compare the Era 100 with alternatives

Compare the following specifications and requirements rather than relying on generic promises about sound:

Decision area What to check Era 100 implication
System plan One speaker, matched stereo pair or home theater One works alone; two matching units form Wi‑Fi stereo; rear use requires a compatible Sonos system.
Network Whether your router and mobile device meet setup needs Wi‑Fi setup is mandatory; 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and Wi‑Fi 6 compatibility are listed.
Secondary sources Bluetooth, AirPlay or another casting method Bluetooth 5.3 and AirPlay 2 are supported after setup.
Television Direct TV input versus a theater ecosystem Line-in is not intended for TV; consider compatible theater products.
Analog equipment Built-in jack, adapter cost and cable requirements USB‑C line-in requires the separately sold Line-In Adapter and 3.5 mm cable.
Controls and privacy Touch controls, app dependence, voice support and microphone hardware Touch and app controls are included; voice availability varies by country and language; a rear switch disconnects microphone power.
Physical fit Available shelf space, outlet location and mounting 7.19 × 4.72 × 5.14 inches, 4.45 lb, six-foot cable; optional wall mount.
Price Current local listing, accessories and return terms Sonos’s U.S. page listed $219 when accessed in 2026; adapter, cable, second speaker and mount add separate costs.

Price, accessories and ownership planning

The $219 figure is a current U.S. listing observed on Sonos’s product page in 2026, not a guaranteed permanent MSRP. Check the local product page immediately before purchase because prices, colors and availability can change. A stereo setup requires buying a second Era 100. A turntable setup requires the Line-In Adapter and auxiliary cable. A wall-mounted installation may require the optional Era 100 mount. None of those additions should be silently folded into the single-speaker price.

Troubleshooting common buying and setup problems

“Bluetooth cannot find the speaker.”

Confirm that the Era 100 has already been added to Wi‑Fi in the Sonos app. Bluetooth is an available source after setup, not a replacement for it. Keep the phone near the speaker, enable Bluetooth and select the Era 100 from the phone’s device list.

“I want to connect my TV with the adapter.”

Do not use the line-in path as a TV solution. Sonos states that this connection is not intended for TV. Use a supported Sonos home-theater configuration and verify compatibility for the products involved.

“My turntable has no sound.”

Check that the Line-In Adapter and 3.5 mm cable are connected, that the turntable provides line-level output or has a phono preamp, and that the line-in source is selected in the Sonos app. The adapter and cable are sold separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Voice control does not work.”

Check the rear microphone switch first. If it is off, microphone hardware power is disconnected. If it is on, verify that the selected voice service supports your country and language; Sonos does not promise universal availability.

“The speaker will not join my network.”

Use the current Sonos app on a compatible phone or tablet, verify the Wi‑Fi password and confirm that the mobile device is on the intended network. The listed router support includes 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and Wi‑Fi 6, but local network settings can still block device discovery.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the Era 100 if you want a compact, mains-powered Sonos room speaker with Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and AirPlay 2, and you accept app-based setup. Choose another approach if direct TV input, built-in analog connectivity or Wi‑Fi-free first use is essential.
