Choose the Sonos Arc Ultra if you want its newer driver design, Bluetooth, Android Trueplay support, and more adjustable dialogue enhancement. Choose the original Arc only if you find it at a meaningfully lower price and its feature set fits your setup. Sonos’s specifications establish those differences, but they do not prove that the Ultra sounds better in every room. Both are premium Dolby Atmos soundbars that connect to a TV through HDMI eARC/ARC.

What’s different between the Arc Ultra and Arc?

The Arc Ultra is the newer model, with changes to its driver architecture, spatial-audio description, connectivity, dialogue controls, and dimensions. Here is the practical comparison based on Sonos’s product listings.

Feature Sonos Arc Ultra Sonos Arc
Drivers 14 Sonos-engineered drivers, including Sound Motion 11 drivers, including two dedicated height channels
Immersive audio Sonos describes a 9.1.4 spatial audio experience with Dolby Atmos Dolby Atmos with upward-firing drivers
Dialogue enhancement Four customizable Speech Enhancement levels Speech Enhancement in the Sonos app
Connectivity HDMI eARC/ARC, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth HDMI eARC/ARC and Wi-Fi
Trueplay listing iOS and Android iOS

What the differences mean in everyday use

More drivers do not guarantee a better-sounding result

Sonos lists 14 drivers for Arc Ultra and 11 for Arc, and describes the Ultra’s Sound Motion architecture as part of its 9.1.4 spatial-audio experience. Those are manufacturer specifications and positioning, not independent measurements of what you will hear. Room shape, placement, TV content, and personal preference all affect the experience. The available evidence does not establish that Arc Ultra sounds better in a controlled head-to-head comparison.

Sonos Arc Ultra Soundbar with Dolby Atmos - Black
  • All-new acoustic architecture with Sound Motion technology fills every inch of the room and precisely place sounds all around you
  • Unparalleled 9.1.4 spatial audio experience with Dolby Atmos
  • Ultra-clear dialogue plus Speech Enhancement, powered by AI, detects the human voice to clarify every word
  • Elegant design looks great in your home and won’t distract from your entertainment
  • Control with your TV remote, the Sonos app, the touch controls, Sonos Voice Control, and Amazon Alexa

Sonos’s Arc Ultra fact sheet says its Sound Motion woofer doubles bass output compared with Arc. That is a Sonos claim, not an independently verified comparison. The same fact sheet gives October 29, 2024, as the start of availability in its named launch markets and records a US launch price of $999; that launch price is historical, not a current offer. Read the Arc Ultra fact sheet.

Dialogue controls are more configurable on Ultra

Both models include Speech Enhancement in the Sonos app, but Sonos lists four customizable levels for Arc Ultra. That makes the Ultra the clearer fit if you often need to adjust dialogue emphasis. The listing does not establish that those controls will improve every program or listener’s experience.

Bluetooth is an Ultra addition

Arc Ultra’s product listing includes Bluetooth; the Arc listing specifies Wi-Fi and HDMI but does not list Bluetooth. Both soundbars connect to a TV using HDMI eARC/ARC. The Ultra listing also specifies Wi-Fi 6, while Sonos’s Arc listing identifies Wi-Fi without the same generation detail.

Check the footprint before choosing

Arc Ultra is about 1.42 inches wider than Arc, but about 0.48 inches shorter and 0.77 lb lighter, using Sonos’s listed dimensions and weights. Its lower profile may help where vertical clearance is tight, while its extra width could matter on a narrow stand. Measure the available surface or wall area rather than assuming the newer model is smaller overall.

Sonos Arc Ultra soundbar + Sub 4 subwoofer + Era 300 Speakers (Pair)
  • The ultimate Dolby Atmos experience: The lateral and overhead channels in Arc Ultra and both Era 300 speakers immerse you an an all-encompassing spatial audio soundstage. You’ll hear planes as if they’re flying above, sense footsteps moving across the room, and feel like you're inside your music.
  • Feel the bass: Experience every rumble, roar, and beat you've been missing with clean, pulse-pounding bass. Sub 4 takes over the lowest frequencies so paired speakers are free to focus on midrange and high frequencies so everything sounds even clearer.
  • Wonderfully wireless: Place Sub 4 anywhere in the room, even under your sofa. It connects to the soundbar over WiFi, so you can create the setup that works best for your space.
  • Perfectly tuned for the room: Using the microphones in your iOS device, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
  • Breeze through setup: Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app. It will guide you through connecting the soundbar to your TV and syncing your TV remote for streamlined control.

Which Sonos soundbar should you buy?

Choose Arc Ultra if its added features matter to you

  • You want the newer driver architecture and Sonos’s 9.1.4 spatial-audio presentation.
  • You want Bluetooth listed as a connection option.
  • You want the four-level Speech Enhancement controls or Android Trueplay support as listed by Sonos.
  • You prefer its shorter height and can accommodate its wider body.

Sonos’s US listing showed Arc Ultra at $1,099 when reviewed for this comparison. Treat that as a time-sensitive listed price, not a guaranteed current price.

Choose Arc if the savings outweigh the feature differences

  • You find the original Arc at a substantially lower verified price.
  • You do not need Bluetooth or the Ultra’s four-level dialogue controls.
  • Your setup works with the Arc’s listed iOS Trueplay support.
  • Its slightly narrower footprint fits your space better.

Sonos’s US listing showed Arc at $899, but the product page was out of stock when crawled. Confirm stock and the actual selling price before treating the listed figure as a purchase option.

Sonos Beam Gen 2 - Black - Soundbar with Dolby Atmos
  • Enrich your entertainment experience with vibrant bass, crystal clear dialogue, and a panoramic soundstage.
  • Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.
  • Stream music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks from all your favorite services when the TV is off.
  • Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
  • Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.

How to set up either soundbar with a TV

  1. Check that your TV has an HDMI eARC or ARC port. Sonos says both soundbars connect to that port with the included HDMI cable.
  2. Connect the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI eARC/ARC port, then follow the Sonos app’s setup instructions.
  3. For room tuning, check Sonos’s current Trueplay device requirements: the comparison listing describes Arc Ultra support for iOS and Android, while Arc’s Trueplay description requires a supported iOS device.

Arc Ultra can also be paired with a Sonos Sub and Era 300 rear speakers for an expanded system, according to Sonos. Those components are optional; they are not prerequisites for using the soundbar.

Should you upgrade from Arc to Arc Ultra?

If your Arc already meets your needs, the listed specification differences alone are not proof that an upgrade will deliver an audible improvement worth its cost. Consider upgrading if you specifically want Bluetooth, Android Trueplay support, the Ultra’s dialogue controls, or its newer design—and if the live price makes sense to you. For a buyer choosing between the two from scratch, Arc Ultra is the more feature-rich option on Sonos’s published specifications; the original Arc is the value choice only when a real, substantial discount is available.
