If your Sonos Arc Ultra is silent, first check whether the problem affects every TV source or just one, then confirm the Arc Ultra is fully set up in the Sonos app and connected to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port. Those checks help separate a connection or HDMI-control issue from an unsupported audio format or a problem with one streaming device.
First, identify when the sound is missing
Notice whether the Arc Ultra is silent all the time, silent only with one source, or plays audio that later cuts out. The pattern helps point to the right checks:
- No sound from any TV source: Check setup, the ARC/eARC connection, cable seating, and possible HDMI-CEC conflicts.
- No sound from one streaming device, game console, or player: Check that device’s audio output and the TV’s handling of its audio format.
- Sound starts and then cuts out or skips: Follow the interruption checks below, including a temporary Stereo/PCM test and checking whether the TV’s own speakers also drop out.
Confirm Arc Ultra setup and the TV connection
Finish setup in the Sonos app
Complete Arc Ultra setup in the Sonos app before troubleshooting TV audio. For an HDMI ARC detection check, Sonos says to have the TV powered on and actively playing a show or movie. See Sonos’s home theater no-sound guidance and its TV connection error guidance.

Use the TV’s ARC or eARC port
Check that the HDMI cable runs from the Arc Ultra to the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC, rather than to a regular HDMI input. Unplug and firmly reseat both ends. The TV’s port labels and menus vary by model, so consult the TV’s own labeling or manual if the ARC/eARC port is not obvious. Sonos explains the connection requirements in its TV requirements for home theater speakers.

- All-new acoustic architecture with Sound Motion technology fills every inch of the room and precisely place sounds all around you
- Unparalleled 9.1.4 spatial audio experience with Dolby Atmos
- Ultra-clear dialogue plus Speech Enhancement, powered by AI, detects the human voice to clarify every word
- Elegant design looks great in your home and won’t distract from your entertainment
- Control with your TV remote, the Sonos app, the touch controls, Sonos Voice Control, and Amazon Alexa
Arc Ultra uses HDMI ARC/eARC for TV connection features. Sonos says HDMI ARC is required for CEC or supported voice-assistant TV control, and Atmos playback requires HDMI ARC or eARC. If a compatible TV lacks ARC, an optical connection using a supported adapter may be an alternative, but optical does not carry CEC or voice control; it is not a like-for-like replacement for HDMI ARC.
Inspect the HDMI cable and restart the system
Before changing audio formats, check the physical connection. Look for visible damage, sharp bends, or kinks, and make sure the cable is fully inserted at the TV and Arc Ultra. If you have another HDMI cable available, substitute it as a test; a change in behavior can help isolate a cable problem, but does not by itself prove the original cable was faulty. Sonos includes these checks in its TV audio interruption guidance.

- Turn off the TV and any connected source device.
- Unplug the TV and connected source from power for 10 seconds.
- Restore power, turn the devices on, and test TV audio again.
The 10-second interval is Sonos’s troubleshooting instruction, not a guarantee that a particular fault will be fixed.

If the Sonos app reports an HDMI or CEC error, another device connected to the TV may be interfering with HDMI commands. Sonos identifies connected equipment such as receivers, cable boxes, and game consoles as possible sources of interference in its HDMI error guidance.

- The ultimate Dolby Atmos experience: The lateral and overhead channels in Arc Ultra and both Era 300 speakers immerse you an an all-encompassing spatial audio soundstage. You’ll hear planes as if they’re flying above, sense footsteps moving across the room, and feel like you're inside your music.
- Feel the bass: Experience every rumble, roar, and beat you've been missing with clean, pulse-pounding bass. Sub 4 takes over the lowest frequencies so paired speakers are free to focus on midrange and high frequencies so everything sounds even clearer.
- Wonderfully wireless: Place Sub 4 anywhere in the room, even under your sofa. It connects to the soundbar over WiFi, so you can create the setup that works best for your space.
- Perfectly tuned for the room: Using the microphones in your iOS device, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
- Breeze through setup: Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app. It will guide you through connecting the soundbar to your TV and syncing your TV remote for streamlined control.
- In the TV’s settings, make sure HDMI-CEC is enabled. TV manufacturers may use different names and menu locations for CEC.
- Disconnect the TV’s other HDMI devices, leaving the Arc Ultra connected.
- Play TV audio and check whether the error or silence clears.
- Reconnect the other devices one at a time, checking audio after each connection.
- If reconnecting a particular device brings the problem back, disable CEC on that device if its settings allow it.
Sonos also mentions an HDMI cable or adapter that removes CEC functionality as a possible workaround when a device cannot disable CEC. Treat that as a targeted option only after testing identifies a CEC conflict, not as a general fix for silence.
Check audio format when only one source is affected
If the Arc Ultra works with other TV sources, check the audio output selected by the affected streaming device or player, as well as the TV’s audio settings. Sonos says an unsupported signal can trigger an unsupported-audio message. Its recommended sequence is to change the format in the TV’s Sound or Audio settings, then adjust the connected video device’s output if needed. Exact menu names vary by manufacturer. See Sonos’s guidance on unsupported audio.

Sonos lists Stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS for its home theater products; DTS is unavailable on products using the Sonos S1 Controller. For Arc Ultra, Arc, Arc SL, Beam (Gen 2), and Beam Ultra, Sonos also lists Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos (Dolby Digital Plus), Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos (True HD), Multichannel PCM, and Dolby Multichannel PCM. Sonos marks Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos (True HD), Multichannel PCM, and Dolby Multichannel PCM as requiring eARC. Some devices send Atmos or Dolby Multichannel PCM using Dolby MAT. The supported result depends on the soundbar, TV connection and settings, and source-device output—not on the soundbar alone. The full list is in Sonos’s supported home theater audio formats.
Troubleshoot audio that cuts out or skips
For interruptions rather than continuous silence, Sonos recommends restarting the TV and connected source, inspecting and reseating the HDMI cable, updating the TV software, and testing Stereo/PCM. Use Stereo/PCM as a diagnostic: if interruptions stop, that points toward a format or signal-path issue to investigate, but it does not mean you must leave the system in stereo if you want surround sound or Atmos.

Check whether the TV speakers also drop out
Disconnect the Arc Ultra and test the TV’s built-in speakers. If the interruption also happens there, the TV itself may need separate troubleshooting. Sonos also recommends updating the TV software when investigating audio that stops or skips.
