Choose the Sonos Ace if you already own a compatible Sonos soundbar and will use TV Audio Swap. For ordinary Bluetooth listening, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is the stronger default when LDAC support, multipoint and deeper app-based sound customization matter more. Independent testing from RTINGS describes their overall noise isolation as comparable, so neither is a universal ANC winner. Both makers advertise about 30 hours of battery life, but those figures come from separate manufacturer tests and do not prove equal real-world endurance.
Decision at a glance
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Private TV listening with a compatible Sonos soundbar | Sonos Ace | TV Audio Swap sends soundbar audio to the headphones. A later software update added support for two Ace listeners in sync. |
| Bluetooth listening with codec flexibility | Sony WH-1000XM5 | Sony documents LDAC support, although the phone or source device must support and be configured for it. |
| Equalizer control and sound personalization | Sony WH-1000XM5 | RTINGS reports more companion-app customization, including a graphic EQ and presets. |
| Noise blocking by itself | Close | RTINGS finds comparable overall isolation across a wide range of sounds. Fit and the specific noise environment still matter. |
| Published battery headline | Tie on paper | Sonos rates Ace for up to 30 hours with ANC or Aware enabled; Sony lists 30 hours. The test conditions are not established as identical. |
That makes this a use-case decision rather than a simple “newer versus older” contest. The Ace’s defining advantage is its connection to a Sonos home-theater system. The WH-1000XM5’s advantage is a more mature general-purpose Bluetooth feature set, especially for listeners who adjust their sound or use LDAC-compatible devices.
What the two headphones are designed to do
Sonos Ace
The Ace is Sonos’s over-ear noise-cancelling model. Its fact sheet lists Bluetooth 5.4, active noise cancellation (ANC), an Aware mode for letting outside sound in, USB-C charging and USB-C audio. Sonos lists a weight of 312 g and claims up to 30 hours of listening with ANC or Aware enabled. Those are manufacturer specifications; the fact sheet does not state a publication year.

Sony WH-1000XM5
The WH-1000XM5 is Sony’s premium over-ear ANC headphone for general Bluetooth use. Sony’s product page advertises 30 hours of battery life and multipoint connection. Sony’s help documentation also confirms LDAC, its Bluetooth coding technology for transmitting high-resolution audio when the connected source supports the codec and is configured to use it.
RTINGS’ direct comparison characterizes the Sony as more customizable in its companion app. The cited controls include a graphic equalizer and presets, giving you more ways to shape the sound than a headphone that is mainly intended to fit into a larger home-theater ecosystem.
Noise cancellation: close overall, not identical in every situation
RTINGS concludes that the Ace and WH-1000XM5 have “comparable overall noise isolation performance” and can block a wide spectrum of sounds. That is the most defensible answer to the question of which has better ANC: the available comparative evidence does not establish a decisive winner.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“Comparable” does not mean every listener will hear the same result. Over-ear ANC depends on the seal around your ears, the position of the cups, glasses or hair interfering with the pads, and the character of the noise. Low, steady engine rumble is a different challenge from speech, keyboard clicks or a train announcement. A small fit difference can therefore make one model seem quieter to you even when a controlled comparison rates them similarly.
Choose based on your noise environment
- Air travel and trains: either model is a reasonable candidate because the independent comparison finds broad-spectrum isolation from both. Prioritize the fit that seals comfortably for long periods.
- Open offices: test how well the cups fit and whether you prefer hearing occasional announcements through Aware mode or Sony’s ambient controls. The cited evidence does not establish a universal advantage for either model against voices.
- Walking and shared spaces: an awareness mode is useful, but neither ANC system should replace attention to traffic and other hazards. Sonos explicitly lists Aware mode; do not treat ANC as a safety feature.
Do not buy either model on the assumption that a manufacturer’s feature list proves superior cancellation. The comparative conclusion comes from RTINGS, while the exact result you experience is strongly influenced by fit.

TV Audio Swap is the Ace’s decisive feature
If a compatible Sonos soundbar is already in your living room, the Ace can do something the Sony does not establish in the cited material: receive the soundbar’s TV audio directly through TV Audio Swap. This lets you watch without sending sound through the room’s speakers or raising the television volume for everyone else.
How the two-listener update changes the use case
Sonos announced a software update adding TV Audio Swap for two listeners, so two people can watch the same program through their Ace headphones at the same time. The announcement also described TrueCinema, adaptive ANC behavior and call-clarity improvements. Those are company-described features of the update, not independent measurements of audio quality or noise reduction.

The practical decision is simple: TV Audio Swap has value only if you own compatible Sonos equipment and regularly watch television privately. If you mainly listen from a phone, tablet or laptop, the soundbar integration will not improve those sessions. Before buying for this purpose, verify the current soundbar compatibility list, required firmware and app version, and whether both headphones are supported in your region.
Bluetooth codecs, lossless audio and app control
Sony’s LDAC path
Sony’s help guide describes LDAC as an audio coding technology developed by Sony that can transmit high-resolution audio over Bluetooth. The same guidance warns that the connected source device may need to be configured to use a codec above the basic SBC option. In practice, LDAC is useful only when your phone, computer or other source supports it, the operating system exposes the setting, and the connection remains stable at the selected quality mode.
LDAC is not a guarantee that every streaming service becomes lossless, nor does its presence prove that you will hear a difference in every environment. It is a capability to match against your source hardware and listening priorities. If you use an iPhone or another source without LDAC output, this particular Sony advantage may not affect your purchase.

Sonos lossless and USB-C options
Sonos states that Ace supports lossless playback over USB-C or Bluetooth when paired with a supported Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound aptX Lossless device. The Ace fact sheet also documents aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless compatibility in its codec information. As with LDAC, the source device, operating-system support and selected settings determine whether the feature is actually used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUSB-C audio gives the Ace another route that does not depend on Bluetooth codec negotiation. It can be relevant when you connect to a computer or another compatible source. Confirm that your device supports USB-C audio output and that the cable and operating system behave as expected; a USB-C connector alone does not make every device an audio source.
Which codec approach should guide your decision?
- Choose the Sony when you specifically own LDAC-capable source devices and want Sony’s documented codec path plus a graphic EQ and presets.
- Choose the Ace when USB-C audio, aptX Lossless with a compatible Snapdragon Sound source, or Sonos TV integration is more useful than LDAC.
- Choose neither on codec labels alone if your main sources use basic Bluetooth settings, because the practical benefit depends on the complete source-and-headphone chain.
Battery claims and charging expectations
Sonos rates Ace for up to 30 hours with ANC or Aware enabled. Sony’s product page states 30 hours. These numbers look equivalent, but they are separate manufacturer claims with no matched independent endurance test in the cited evidence. Do not interpret them as proof that both headphones run for exactly the same time under the same volume, codec, call and standby conditions.
Codec choice, call use, ambient modes, volume and wireless conditions can all change runtime. Treat the figures as planning estimates: enough for many long trips, but not a guarantee for a particular itinerary. Check the current regional product pages for charging-time, quick-charge and in-box details if those factors are important, because the selected evidence does not establish a like-for-like comparison for them.
Weight, comfort and fit
Sonos lists the Ace at 312 g. A matching Sony weight figure is not established in the selected evidence, so a numerical weight comparison would be misleading. More importantly, comfort is not determined by grams alone. Clamp force, headband pressure, pad shape, heat buildup and the seal around your ears determine whether you can wear either model for a full flight or workday.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Because fit affects both comfort and ANC, try the models on if possible. Wear them for several minutes rather than judging from a quick lift of the box. Check whether your glasses break the seal, whether the cups touch your ears, and whether the headband creates a pressure point. If you buy online, understand the retailer’s return period before opening the package.
Calls, multipoint and everyday use
Sony’s official product page lists multipoint, which is useful when you routinely switch between two paired devices such as a phone and a laptop. The cited material does not establish an equivalent multipoint specification for Ace, so do not assume the two behave identically when moving between sources.
Sonos’s update announcement mentions call clarity as part of the software update. That is a manufacturer statement about an added experience, not an independent microphone test. If voice calls are central to your work, evaluate the return policy and look for current call-performance measurements rather than relying on the feature name alone.
For daily music, both models are premium over-ear ANC headphones. The practical split is control versus ecosystem: Sony gives the stronger documented case for app-based tuning, while Ace gives the stronger documented case for private Sonos TV listening.
Which should you buy for common scenarios?
Buy Sonos Ace for a Sonos-equipped living room
Ace is the clear conditional choice when a compatible Sonos soundbar is already part of your setup and you will use TV Audio Swap often. The feature can justify choosing Ace even if the Sony offers controls you prefer for phone listening. The two-listener update makes the feature more useful for couples or housemates who want synchronized private audio.

Buy Sony WH-1000XM5 for codec and EQ control
The Sony is the better fit when you want LDAC and your source device supports it, or when you value a graphic EQ and presets in the companion app. Multipoint also favors the Sony for a two-device work routine based on the cited product information.
Choose either for travel if fit is the deciding factor
RTINGS’ comparable isolation result means travel does not produce an evidence-based ANC winner. Choose the model that seals comfortably, fits your head securely and matches your phone or laptop’s codec support. Do not pay extra for a feature your sources cannot use.
Choose by current price only after checking your region
No current regional street price is established here for either model. Prices, promotions, stock and warranty terms can change by country and retailer. Compare live listings in your market on the day you buy, and include return and support policies in the value calculation.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify your main source. List the phone, tablet, computer and TV setup you will actually use.
- Check ecosystem compatibility. If TV Audio Swap is the reason for buying Ace, confirm that your Sonos soundbar, firmware and app meet the current requirements.
- Check codec support. Verify whether your source supports LDAC for Sony or aptX Lossless and USB-C audio for Ace, and whether the relevant setting can be enabled.
- Decide whether app tuning matters. Sony’s cited advantage is deeper customization through its companion app; do not assume both apps offer the same EQ controls.
- Try the fit. Wear the headphones long enough to notice pressure, heat and seal problems.
- Compare live local value. Check the current price, return window, warranty and availability for the exact regional model.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The strongest comparative conclusion is about overall isolation: RTINGS places the two models in the same general class. The strongest product-specific conclusions are that Ace integrates with compatible Sonos soundbars and that Sony documents LDAC, multipoint and more extensive app customization. Battery figures, Bluetooth versions and codec support are manufacturer claims, not a controlled head-to-head laboratory result.
The cited material does not establish a universal sound-quality winner, a matched battery test, a current price winner, or a numerical Sony weight comparison. It also cannot settle comfort for your head and ears. Those are reasons to make the final decision from your equipment, source devices, fit and local purchase terms rather than from a single headline specification.
Verdict
Get the Sonos Ace when private television listening through a compatible Sonos soundbar is a central reason to buy, especially if two people will use the synchronized TV Audio Swap feature. Get the Sony WH-1000XM5 for a more general Bluetooth-first setup where LDAC, multipoint and graphic-EQ customization matter. If ANC is the only deciding factor, treat them as close and choose on fit, source compatibility and current local value instead of expecting one model to dominate every noise environment.
