There is no universal winner. Choose Sonos Ace Ultra if you already use compatible Sonos speakers and want your headphones tied into that Wi-Fi system, or if the longer manufacturer-rated battery life with noise cancellation matters most. Choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want lossless USB-C audio, Cinema Mode, and Bose’s current adaptive-noise-control feature set. This comparison covers Bose’s second-generation model, introduced in 2025—not the original QuietComfort Ultra.

Sonos announced Ace Ultra on September 1, 2026, at a US launch price of $449, with general availability beginning September 29, 2026. Bose announced QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) on September 10, 2025, also at a $449 US launch price, with availability from October 2, 2025. Those are historical launch prices, not guaranteed current retail prices.

At a glance: the meaningful differences

Decision point Sonos Ace Ultra Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
Best match Sonos households that want Wi-Fi system linking and a longer stated ANC-on battery life Listeners who value lossless USB-C audio, Cinema Mode, and Bose’s established headphone controls
Noise cancellation Sonos advertises up to twice the ANC of the original Ace and uses 10 microphones with adaptive ANC Updated adaptive ANC algorithm, including smoother ActiveSense changes in Aware Mode
Manufacturer battery estimate Up to 35 hours with ANC or Aware mode enabled Up to 30 hours; 23 hours with Immersive Audio on; 45 hours with ANC off
Wireless connections Bluetooth 6.0 plus Wi-Fi for Sonos-system linking Bluetooth headphone functions, including multipoint; Bose’s launch announcement emphasizes USB-C and Cinema Mode
Wired and video features USB-C and USB-C-to-3.5 mm cables are listed on the product page Lossless USB-C audio and Cinema Mode are named second-generation additions
Launch price (US) $449, announced September 1, 2026 $449, announced September 10, 2025

Battery figures come from each manufacturer under different test conditions, so they are not a head-to-head laboratory result. Likewise, Sonos’s “up to two times more ANC” statement compares Ace Ultra with the original Sonos Ace, not with Bose.

Which model is being compared?

The Bose product here is the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), sold from 2025. The first-generation QuietComfort Ultra and the second generation should not be treated as the same model: Bose added lossless USB-C audio, Cinema Mode, an updated adaptive ANC algorithm, on-head-detection changes, and longer battery claims to the newer version.

Sonos Ace Ultra is also a distinct product from the original Sonos Ace. The original Ace’s specifications—including its stated battery figure and TV Audio Swap documentation—cannot automatically be assigned to Ace Ultra. Sonos describes Ace Ultra as a premium over-ear headphone with a Sonos-designed 40 mm driver, adaptive ANC, 10 microphones, Bluetooth 6.0, and Wi-Fi system linking.

Noise cancellation: close enough that your priorities matter more

What Sonos claims

Sonos says Ace Ultra delivers up to two times more active noise cancellation than the original Ace. Its launch information describes adaptive ANC powered by 10 microphones. That is a product-positioning claim and a comparison with an earlier Sonos model; it is not a measured result against Bose’s current Ultra.

What Bose changed

Bose says the second-generation Ultra uses a refined adaptive ANC algorithm. The company specifically describes smoother ActiveSense adjustments in Aware Mode, intended to moderate sudden environmental sounds while preserving an awareness mode rather than switching abruptly between fixed settings.

What independent listening evidence establishes

A September 22, 2026 What Hi-Fi? review reports that Ace Ultra is substantially stronger than the original Ace and has “dramatically” narrowed the gap with Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). The review describes ambient noise as impressively damped, not completely erased. That is an editorial listening assessment, not a controlled numeric test of the two current models. No cited source establishes a decisive ANC winner between these exact generations.

In practical terms, both are designed for aircraft cabins, trains, offices, and other steady background noise. Fit, glasses, hair, ear shape, low-frequency rumble, and the sound of nearby voices can change your result more than a headline specification. If you need a universal ranking, the available evidence does not support one.

Battery life and charging expectations

Sonos Ace Ultra

Sonos lists up to 35 hours with ANC or Aware mode enabled. Because the estimate includes either of those listening modes, it is the most relevant Sonos number for normal noise-canceling use. It remains a manufacturer estimate rather than an independently measured runtime.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)

Bose lists up to 30 hours under its standard condition, 23 hours with Immersive Audio enabled, and 45 hours with ANC off. Immersive Audio uses additional processing, so the 23-hour figure is the more useful Bose expectation if you plan to leave that feature on continuously. The 45-hour figure applies only when ANC is disabled.

These numbers cannot be converted into a precise “five hours longer” result because the companies use different test procedures, volume levels, codecs, and feature settings. On paper, Ace Ultra has the longer stated runtime while ANC or Aware mode is active; Bose offers a higher maximum only when ANC is turned off.

Sonos system linking: the reason to choose Ace Ultra

Ace Ultra’s defining difference is Wi-Fi connection to a Sonos system, in addition to Bluetooth 6.0. Sonos says the feature requires a compatible Sonos speaker, a working Wi-Fi network, and the Sonos app. The product page also labels system linking as opt-in, supplied as-is, and subject to change while the feature is under development.

Before you buy

  • Confirm that the Sonos speaker or soundbar you own is listed as compatible with Ace Ultra, rather than assuming support from the original Ace.
  • Make sure the headphones and speaker will use the same Wi-Fi network during setup.
  • Install the current Sonos app and update the speaker firmware before attempting the link.
  • Decide whether you actually use Sonos speakers at home; if you do not, Wi-Fi linking adds little value over ordinary Bluetooth.

Typical setup path

  1. Charge and power on Ace Ultra, then install or update the Sonos app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Connect the phone and the compatible Sonos speaker to the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open the Sonos app, add Ace Ultra when prompted, and follow the pairing instructions.
  4. Select the supported system-linking or handoff feature in the app and test playback in the room where the speaker is located.
  5. If the headphones do not appear, check Wi-Fi credentials, app permissions, firmware versions, and the compatibility list before resetting either device.

Because Sonos identifies this capability as opt-in and subject to change during development, treat it as a valuable ecosystem feature rather than a permanent guarantee that every Sonos product will support every handoff scenario.

Bluetooth, USB-C, and watching video

Ace Ultra’s wired options

Sonos lists USB-C and USB-C-to-3.5 mm cables with Ace Ultra. The presence of those cables tells you that wired connections are supported; it does not, by itself, specify every digital-audio format, USB host, microphone behavior, or console compatibility. Check the source device’s output requirements before relying on a particular wired setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bose’s lossless USB-C audio

Lossless USB-C audio is an explicit second-generation Bose feature. If you listen from a phone, tablet, computer, or other source that supports compatible USB audio, this can avoid Bluetooth compression. The actual result still depends on the source, operating system, application, cable, and chosen audio settings.

Cinema Mode

Bose names Cinema Mode as another QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) addition. It is aimed at a more theater-like presentation for video. Bose’s announcement does not establish that it will behave identically with every streaming app, device, or game console, so verify compatibility with your intended source.

Sonos TV features

The original Sonos Ace page documents TV Audio Swap with compatible Sonos soundbars. That documentation should not be treated as proof that the same feature, with the same supported soundbars, applies to Ace Ultra. Confirm Ace Ultra support for your exact soundbar before buying on that assumption.

Sound, comfort, and everyday wear

Ace Ultra’s reported sound change

TechRadar’s September 22, 2026 review describes improved musicality compared with the original Ace after several weeks of reviewer testing and discusses changes to sound, ANC, battery, equalization, and smart features. That is a publication’s evaluation, not a universal measurement or a promise that every listener will prefer the tuning.

Bose’s comfort focus

Bose presents comfort and audio quality as hallmarks of the QuietComfort Ultra line. The available official announcement does not provide a direct independent comfort comparison with Ace Ultra. Head shape, glasses, hair, clamp pressure, ear-cup depth, and heat tolerance determine comfort, so try both models if a retailer’s return policy allows it.

How to evaluate fit at home

  • Wear each headphone for at least 30 minutes, not just the few seconds needed to check the hinge.
  • Test with glasses or the headwear you normally use; seal changes can affect both bass and ANC.
  • Walk, recline, and turn your head to check whether the ear cups shift.
  • Listen at the same volume with speech, low-frequency music, and quiet passages.
  • Check whether controls are reachable without breaking the seal or pressing the cups into your ears.

Which one should you buy?

Choose Sonos Ace Ultra when these conditions describe you

  • You already own compatible Sonos speakers and will use Wi-Fi system linking regularly.
  • You want the longer manufacturer-stated ANC/Aware-mode battery estimate of up to 35 hours.
  • You prefer a headphone designed to fit into the Sonos app and home-audio environment.
  • You are comfortable with the system-linking feature being opt-in, supplied as-is, and subject to change during development.

Choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) when these conditions describe you

  • Lossless USB-C audio is important for your computer or other compatible USB source.
  • You want Cinema Mode for supported video listening.
  • You prefer Bose’s adaptive ANC approach and ActiveSense behavior in Aware Mode.
  • You do not own Sonos speakers and therefore would not benefit from Ace Ultra’s Wi-Fi ecosystem feature.
  • You want the option of up to 45 hours, understanding that Bose’s figure applies with ANC turned off.

When neither is an obvious choice

If your only requirement is the strongest possible ANC, do not select solely from the “two times more” claim or from a single review phrase. The available evidence shows that Ace Ultra improved substantially over the original Ace and narrowed the gap with Bose, but it does not prove a winner in every environment. Buy from a seller with a practical return period, test both with your typical devices, and compare the live prices in your region.

Price, availability, and ownership details

Sonos announced a $449 US launch price for Ace Ultra and began general availability on September 29, 2026. Bose announced a $449 US launch price for QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), with availability from October 2, 2025. Neither figure should be presented as today’s sale price, a permanent MSRP in every country, or a guarantee of stock. Regional taxes, currency conversion, promotions, and retailer policies can change the amount you pay.

Sonos lists replacement ear cushions and a replacement battery kit for Ace Ultra. Confirm that an accessory listing explicitly identifies Ace Ultra compatibility before ordering; accessories for the original Ace should not be assumed to fit.

How to make a fair side-by-side test

  1. Charge both headphones fully and install their current companion-app and firmware updates.
  2. Use the same phone or computer, the same music service, and matched volume levels.
  3. Test ANC in a steady low-frequency environment, then with speech and irregular household sounds.
  4. For Bose, test standard ANC, Aware Mode, Immersive Audio, and Cinema Mode separately so the battery and processing trade-offs are clear.
  5. For Sonos, test Bluetooth first, then Wi-Fi system linking with the compatible speaker you intend to use.
  6. Record runtime from a full charge under the settings you actually use; do not compare a Bose ANC-off result with a Sonos ANC-on result as if they were equivalent.
  7. Wear each pair for a full work session or journey and note pressure, heat, seal stability, and control usability.

Common buying mistakes

  • Comparing the wrong Bose generation: verify that the listing says “QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen).”
  • Confusing manufacturer claims with test results: Sonos’s two-times ANC figure is against original Ace, and both companies’ battery figures are estimates.
  • Assuming Wi-Fi linking is universal: compatibility requires a supported Sonos speaker, Wi-Fi, and the Sonos app.
  • Assuming a cable guarantees lossless audio: only Bose explicitly names lossless USB-C audio; Sonos’s included cables do not define every format or source-device behavior.
  • Transferring original Ace features to Ace Ultra: verify TV Audio Swap and other soundbar functions for the newer model.
  • Treating launch prices as current prices: check regional retailers on the day you buy.

Bottom line for different listeners

For a Sonos household, Ace Ultra is the more purpose-built choice: Wi-Fi system linking, Bluetooth 6.0, and a stated 35-hour ANC/Aware-mode estimate directly address that ecosystem’s needs. For a listener whose priorities are lossless USB-C audio, Cinema Mode, and Bose’s second-generation adaptive ANC refinements, QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) is the better fit.

Neither model has a documented, controlled ANC victory over the other in the evidence available here. Let your existing devices, preferred wired or video features, comfort, and the current local price decide the purchase.
