Choose Mario Kart World if you have (or plan to buy) a Nintendo Switch 2 and want a connected world to explore, races with up to 24 drivers, and substantial local play. Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if you need PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or PC support, or if shifting between worlds and tuning your vehicle sounds more appealing than Nintendo’s open course structure. Neither is universally better; the right pick follows your hardware and the kind of racing you enjoy.
Quick comparison
The two games target different versions of the kart-racing fantasy. Mario Kart World treats its courses as parts of one traversable setting, adding Free Roam and large-field events to the familiar Grand Prix formula. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds builds its identity around portals that move the race into another world and around deeper vehicle customization.

Mario Kart World requires Nintendo Switch 2
Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. A Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite or another console cannot run it. Nintendo lists June 5, 2025 as the release date and, on its U.S. store page, a regular price of $79.99. That price is a regional listing checked at that time, not a promise that every retailer or region will charge the same amount.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This requirement matters for households deciding whether to buy a game or a console. If a Switch 2 is already in the home, Mario Kart World has no platform-access hurdle. If you would be buying the hardware solely for this title, include the console, accessories and any online-service costs in the decision rather than treating the software price as the full investment.
CrossWorlds reaches more existing systems
SEGA released Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC platforms. Current SEGA support information also covers a Nintendo Switch 2 edition. The exact edition, upgrade path and feature set should be checked against the store page for your system: a listing for the original Switch version is not automatically proof that every Switch 2 feature or entitlement is included.
The broader footprint is CrossWorlds’ practical advantage. Friends can choose it without first standardizing on Nintendo’s newest console, and a PC owner is not excluded. Prices, bundles and availability vary by platform and can change, so compare the current listings on the day you purchase rather than relying on a launch-era price.

How the races feel different
Mario’s connected-course design
Mario Kart World links its courses through a large, traversable setting instead of presenting every event as an isolated menu selection. That structure supports Free Roam: you can drive through the environment outside a conventional race and decide how to spend time between events. It also changes how a Grand Prix feels, because the courses belong to a broader geography rather than a simple list.
Knockout Tour provides another distinct race format. Drivers are eliminated at checkpoints, so surviving the route is as important as taking a fast line through an individual corner. Battle modes remain available for players who want objectives other than finishing a circuit. The result is a package built around variety within one Nintendo world.
CrossWorlds’ portal transitions
CrossWorlds uses portals to change the world during a race. A route can leave one environment and enter another, making the transition itself part of the event instead of a loading-screen break between separate tracks. SEGA describes the game as spanning land, sea, air and space, so the vehicle and the surface can change repeatedly during one competition.

- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That design favors players who enjoy reacting to a changing route. A familiar braking point may lead into a different surface or a new visual space after a portal, and the appeal comes from learning how each transition affects your approach. It is a different kind of variety from Mario’s connected map: CrossWorlds concentrates surprise inside the race, while Mario Kart World gives you a place to explore between races.

- Pick Mario Kart World if you want to memorize a broad set of courses, drive around when you are not racing, and alternate between standard championships, eliminations and battles.
- Pick CrossWorlds if the idea of a course changing worlds mid-event is the hook, and you would rather prepare a vehicle setup than spend time in a free-driving map.
- If you enjoy both, decide which activity you would perform repeatedly after the novelty fades: roaming and event variety, or portal surprises and tuning.
Modes and what you can do beyond a standard race
Mario Kart World’s activity mix
Mario Kart World combines four named pillars: Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Free Roam and battle modes. Grand Prix is the conventional multi-race progression. Knockout Tour creates pressure through eliminations. Free Roam lets you drive through the connected setting without treating every trip as a timed race. Battle modes supply goal-based matches that are structurally different from crossing a finish line.
Nintendo has continued to alter the feature set after launch. Official updates have added team play to Knockout Tour, new routes and spectator functionality. Because those additions are version-dependent, open the current official product information and update notes before assuming that a particular option is present in an older review or a used copy.
CrossWorlds’ solo, team and online options
SEGA describes CrossWorlds as supporting solo and team play, with both offline and online modes. That gives it a useful range for a household that sometimes races alone and sometimes forms a team. The exact menu, player count and cross-platform behavior can depend on the edition, so verify those details for the platform you intend to use instead of transferring a number from another system.
Its content identity remains tied to the world-shifting race concept. Vehicle choices and customization are not a side menu added to a basic racer; they are part of how the game asks you to approach each event. Players who like experimenting with a setup before trying a route may find more long-term interest here than in a purely pick-up-and-play format.

Playing together on one Nintendo system
Nintendo documents split-screen play for up to four players on one system in Mario Kart World. This is the straightforward choice for a living-room group that wants everyone on the same console and screen. You still need enough compatible controllers, and split-screen visibility is naturally less spacious than a solo view, but no second console is required for that arrangement.

Using several systems locally
Mario Kart World supports local wireless play for up to eight players across systems. This suits a group bringing multiple Switch 2 consoles to one location. It is a different setup from four-player split-screen: each person uses a separate system, and every system must have a compatible copy and the necessary wireless configuration.
Large online fields
Nintendo lists races with up to 24 drivers for Mario Kart World. That scale is useful if your priority is a crowded online event rather than a small private lobby. Do not assume that every mode, update or regional service uses the same number; consult Nintendo’s current mode descriptions and online requirements before organizing a tournament.
CrossWorlds multiplayer checks
CrossWorlds offers offline and online play and includes solo and team formats, but the supplied official information does not establish one universal player count for every platform. Console and PC editions can have different technical limits, input requirements or account rules. Before buying for a group, confirm four items in the platform-specific listing or SEGA support page:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Whether the exact edition supports the local mode you want.
- How many players that mode allows on one system.
- Whether online play requires the platform’s paid service or a separate account.
- Whether friends on other platforms can join the same session.
This verification prevents the most common multiplayer disappointment: purchasing the right game but the wrong edition for the planned gathering.
Vehicle choice and customization
Why CrossWorlds appeals to tuners
Vehicle customization is one of CrossWorlds’ defining attractions. You can treat the machine as part of your strategy, experimenting with a setup rather than selecting a character and immediately accepting a fixed handling profile. A PC Gamer reviewer specifically praised the game’s vehicle customization and track experimentation; that is a critic’s evaluation, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee that every player will prefer its handling.
Customization also gives repeat racers a concrete reason to revisit a familiar course. You can test a different configuration, observe how it behaves across a portal transition, and decide whether the change helps your line or simply feels better. If you dislike menus and want every vehicle to be immediately understandable, this extra layer may feel like work instead of depth.

Why Mario Kart World remains approachable
Mario Kart World emphasizes the recognizable Mario Kart loop: choose a driver and vehicle combination, learn item timing and track shortcuts, and improve through repeated races. Its connected world adds exploration without requiring you to build a detailed tuning plan before every event. That makes it easier to hand a controller to a new player while still leaving room for experienced racers to optimize lines, items and route choices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The distinction is about where you want to spend attention. CrossWorlds asks, “What setup should I bring to this changing course?” Mario Kart World asks, “How can I drive this route, use its items and survive the field?” Neither approach is inherently deeper; they reward different kinds of engagement.

How to interpret the listed prices
The only specific current price established for this comparison is Nintendo’s U.S. listing of $79.99 for Mario Kart World. Treat it as a regional store price that can change. CrossWorlds pricing varies by platform and edition, so a meaningful price comparison requires checking both stores at the same time, including whether a deluxe edition, physical copy or upgrade entitlement is involved.
Do not let a lower launch discount decide the entire purchase if your group cannot play on that platform. Hardware access, controller requirements, online-service fees and the number of people who will actually use the game can outweigh a short-term software sale.
Updates change the answer over time
Mario Kart World’s post-launch updates demonstrate why an old review can be incomplete. Team play in Knockout Tour, additional routes and spectator functionality were added after release. Check Nintendo’s current product page and update information for the version you will play.
For CrossWorlds, use SEGA’s current support information to confirm modes and edition compatibility. A feature described for one console or for the Switch 2 edition should not be assumed to exist identically on every platform.

What the sales milestone does—and does not—tell you
SEGA announced on October 23, 2025, “Over 1 Million Units Sold Worldwide and Still Counting!” The accompanying figure includes physical units and digital downloads across platforms. It indicates a significant audience, but it is a historical milestone rather than a current sales total and does not prove that CrossWorlds is the better game for your group.
Choose by player profile
You already own a Nintendo Switch 2
Mario Kart World is the natural first choice if you want a Nintendo-exclusive social racer and value Free Roam, the connected setting and large races. Its four-player same-system option is especially compelling for a household that gathers around one screen.
You play on PlayStation, Xbox or PC
CrossWorlds is the practical choice because it is available on those platform families. Confirm the exact edition and online rules, then focus on whether portals and tuning match your taste. Buying a second console just to access a particular racer is a separate hardware decision, not a simple game comparison.
You want the most to do outside a conventional race
Mario Kart World has the clearer answer through Free Roam and its connected setting, while its battle and elimination modes provide alternatives to a standard championship. CrossWorlds supplies variety through portals, solo and team events, and customization rather than a separately described free-driving world.
You want to build and adjust vehicles
CrossWorlds is the stronger fit when tuning is part of the fun. Its customization system gives you another decision before the starting line and another reason to test a route repeatedly.
You are buying for mixed-skill players
Mario Kart World’s familiar format and same-system split screen make it easier to start a spontaneous group session. CrossWorlds can still work well for a mixed group, but spend time confirming the local mode and deciding whether newcomers will enjoy learning both the portal routes and the customization options.
You care most about race-field size
Mario Kart World is the only game in this comparison with a stated field size: Nintendo describes races with up to 24 drivers. CrossWorlds may have different limits by platform or mode, so treat any unsourced number as unconfirmed.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the system. If you do not own a Switch 2, remove Mario Kart World from the immediate shortlist unless you also budget for that console. If you use PlayStation, Xbox or PC, check the CrossWorlds listing for your exact device.
- Describe your preferred session. Choose “connected-world exploration and varied events” for Mario Kart World, or “portal transitions and vehicle tuning” for CrossWorlds.
- Count the players. For Mario Kart World, decide between four people on one system, up to eight systems locally, or a larger online race. For CrossWorlds, verify the platform-specific local and online limits before purchase.
- Check the current edition. Confirm Switch versus Switch 2 labeling, physical versus digital format, upgrade terms and included content.
- Check current requirements. Review online-service requirements, controller needs, account setup and update size for the platform you will use.
- Compare today’s price. Use the current regional store pages for both games; do not treat the U.S. Mario Kart World listing or an old CrossWorlds sale as a permanent price.
- Plan for updates. Install the latest version before judging the feature set, particularly for Mario Kart World’s added routes, spectator functionality and Knockout Tour team play.
Final recommendation
Mario Kart World is the better match for a Switch 2 owner who wants an interconnected setting, Free Roam, Nintendo’s familiar handling and unusually large races. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the better match for players on a wider range of hardware who want races that jump between worlds and a more explicit vehicle-customization layer. Start with platform compatibility, then choose the race structure you would still enjoy after the launch novelty wears off.
