Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if you want the safer all-round recommendation for Nintendo Switch: a mature Mario Kart format, battle modes, four-player same-system play, and an optional 48-course expansion. Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if you want races that change worlds mid-event, deep vehicle and gadget setup, a Sega-focused cast, or the ability to play on PlayStation, Xbox and PC as well as Nintendo hardware.
Both games list up to 12 online players on Switch, so that headline number does not decide the comparison. The important differences are track structure, customization, platform access, local multiplayer details and the kind of repetition you are willing to accept.
Quick verdict
| If you value… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Established racing and battle modes on Nintendo hardware | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Its familiar course and battle structure is easy to learn and works especially well for mixed-skill groups. |
| Mid-race world changes and alternate routes | Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | Travel Rings move the second lap into a different CrossWorld with new hazards and routes. |
| Vehicle tuning and gadget experimentation | Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | Nintendo lists 45 original vehicles and 70 gadgets; Sega advertises more than 70 gadgets and over 70,000 machine combinations. |
| Four people playing on one Switch | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Both games list up to four players on one Switch, but Mario Kart’s established modes make it the less complicated party choice. |
| More hardware choices | Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | It is available on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, Steam and Epic Games Store. |
| More courses without buying another game | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | The Booster Course Pass adds 48 remastered courses, either as a $24.99 US purchase or through an eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. |
This is a preference-based comparison, not a universal quality ranking. The available independent review evidence is one PC Gamer catch-up review of the 2025 release; it praised CrossWorlds’ racing, off-road paths, shortcuts and customization, while reporting online errors, item-balance concerns and a repetitive feel to the transition into alternate tracks.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a Sega game developed by Sonic Team. Nintendo’s US listing gives September 25, 2025 as the Switch release date. Sega announced the same date for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, with Steam and Epic Games Store versions following on September 26. Sega Support records a Nintendo Switch 2 release on December 4, 2025. Nintendo’s current listing says Switch 2 compatibility is supported and describes higher resolution and frame rates on that system.
#1 Best Overall
- Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses
- Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return
- Plus, the Inklings appear as all-new guest characters, along with returning favorites, such as King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.
- Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc
The broad platform selection matters if your regular group is split between consoles and PC. It also makes CrossWorlds the natural choice for someone who does not own a Nintendo system. Platform availability does not, by itself, establish identical cross-platform matchmaking rules or online performance.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched for Nintendo Switch on April 28, 2017. Nintendo lists it as supported on Switch 2. A free Switch 2 update adds visual improvements, faster loading and support for up to eight players racing locally on one system. It remains a Nintendo-platform game rather than a PlayStation, Xbox or PC release.
The age difference is useful context: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a long-established Switch package, while CrossWorlds is a newer 2025 release. A larger installed audience can make Mario Kart easier to bring to a family gathering, but the comparison here does not establish player-population figures or matchmaking speed.

How the races are built
CrossWorlds changes the course during a race
CrossWorlds’ defining mechanic is the Travel Ring. Sega describes a three-lap race in which the second lap passes through a CrossWorld before the final lap returns to the original course. The transition is not merely a visual shortcut: the alternate world introduces different routes and hazards, so the best line can change between laps.
That structure rewards players who can read a new section quickly. A familiar first lap gives you time to learn the opening course; the CrossWorld then tests whether you can react to a changed surface, obstacle pattern or shortcut; the final lap returns to the original setting with the race already reshaped by the earlier section. It creates a stronger sense of an event changing around you than a conventional three-lap circuit.
The trade-off is consistency. If you prefer to memorize one layout and optimize every corner, a mid-race destination can feel less predictable. PC Gamer’s 2026 catch-up review specifically found the transition into alternate tracks repetitive, despite praising the off-road paths and shortcuts elsewhere in the racing.
Mario Kart keeps the established circuit format
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe uses the recognizable Mario Kart approach: a set course, repeated laps, items that can change positions and a separate battle-mode structure. Its appeal is readability. New players can understand the objective immediately, while experienced players can refine braking points, drift timing and item use over repeated sessions.

Nintendo’s package also gives you a large fixed course library. The base game contains its original circuits, and the optional Booster Course Pass adds 48 remastered courses. Those courses are an expansion to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, not a requirement for comparing the base games; make sure you know which content your group owns before planning a tournament.
Vehicles, gadgets and customization
CrossWorlds makes setup a central activity
Customization is the clearest mechanical contrast. Nintendo’s official listing reports 45 original vehicles and 70 gadgets. Sega’s launch announcement describes more than 70 gadgets and over 70,000 machine combinations. The counts come from publisher specifications and use slightly different wording, so they should be read as an indication of breadth rather than an independently audited total.

- Nuevos personajes: Inkling, Rey Boo, Huesitos y Bowsy
- Inclusi n de circuitos in ditos en el modo batalla
- Los pilotos cuentan con el volante inteligente, que ayuda a no salirse de la pista
- Hasta 8 pilotos en partidas de multijugador local
In practical terms, CrossWorlds gives you reasons to experiment with the machine you take into a race. You can treat a vehicle-and-gadget setup as part of your strategy rather than choosing a kart mainly for appearance. A player who enjoys comparing combinations, adapting to a course and revisiting a favorite character with a different build will find more to manage here than in Mario Kart’s simpler vehicle-selection format.
That depth also adds overhead. A newcomer may need several races to understand why one combination feels better on a particular route. If your group wants to select a character and start racing within a minute, the number of choices can be a distraction rather than a benefit.
Mario Kart emphasizes quick, legible choices
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offers character and vehicle options within the familiar Mario Kart format, but the game does not make tuning the central identity of every race. You can adjust your kart, wheels and glider, yet the presentation keeps the emphasis on driving, items and course knowledge.
This makes Mario Kart easier to use as a shared party game. Players can make a reasonable selection without studying a build spreadsheet, and an experienced player can still pursue a preferred handling style. CrossWorlds is the better fit when the setup screen is part of the fun; Mario Kart is the better fit when it is something you want to finish quickly.
Content scale and expansion choices
What the published CrossWorlds counts mean
Nintendo’s listing identifies 24 tracks, 15 CrossWorlds, 23 characters, 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets. Sega separately advertises more than 70 gadgets and over 70,000 machine combinations. These are publisher-reported specifications, not independent measurements of replay value. A higher count does not guarantee that every option will feel equally useful or that every route will suit every player.
The useful distinction is between tracks and CrossWorlds. The track is the starting race environment; the CrossWorld is the alternate destination reached through a Travel Ring. Because the second lap changes location, one starting track can involve more than one visual and tactical context during a single event.

Nintendo says the Booster Course Pass contains 48 additional courses. In the United States, Nintendo’s support information lists a $24.99 purchase option or access through an eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Purchased DLC remains playable after a membership ends; access supplied by the membership lasts only while that membership is active. Prices, membership terms and availability can change by region and date.
The pass is optional. If you are comparing the games for a household that already owns Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the base package is enough to play. If your friends regularly choose the added courses, however, the practical cost of joining their sessions may include the pass or the appropriate active membership.
CrossWorlds downloadable content
CrossWorlds has a Season Pass and crossover downloadable content. The exact lineup and availability vary by platform and date, so check the store page for the system on which you intend to play. The available specifications do not establish a single universal price or a permanent content schedule.

Multiplayer: local, wireless and online
| Mode listed by the official Switch pages | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds |
|---|---|---|
| Single system on Switch | 1–4 players | 1–4 players |
| Local wireless | 2–8 players | 2–8 players |
| Online | 2–12 players | 2–12 players |
| Switch 2 local update | Up to 8 players racing locally on one system after the free update | Not stated in the supplied official specifications |
On Switch, the headline capacities are effectively tied. Nintendo requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership for Mario Kart’s online play. The available CrossWorlds specifications do not establish a platform-specific online subscription requirement, so verify the current terms for your system before buying specifically for online multiplayer.

The comparison does not establish equal matchmaking speed, server reliability, cross-play rules or connection stability. PC Gamer’s review reported online errors in its own experience with CrossWorlds; that is a reviewer’s observation, not a guarantee that every player will encounter the same frequency of errors.
For a living-room group, consider controllers and screens as well as the published player count. Four players on one Switch is listed for both games, while Mario Kart’s Switch 2 update raises same-system racing to eight. Local wireless counts describe multiple systems connected nearby, not eight people sharing one screen.

Why CrossWorlds suits discovery-oriented players
CrossWorlds is appealing when you want each race to present a navigational problem. Off-road paths and shortcuts give you alternatives to the obvious racing line, while the Travel Ring creates a deliberate change of scenery and hazards on lap two. The combination encourages scouting: you are not only asking which corner to drift, but also which route is likely to remain useful after the course changes.
Its potential weakness is repetition in the transition itself. If the game repeatedly uses a similar handoff into the alternate track, the spectacle can become routine. The independent review also raised concerns about item balance, meaning that races may not always feel as controlled as the vehicle setup suggests.

Mario Kart’s fixed courses make it easier to build shared knowledge. A group can run the same circuit several times, learn where items appear and develop informal rules for selecting characters or vehicle parts. The established battle modes add a different objective when a standard grand prix becomes familiar.
That predictability is a strength for tournaments and family play, but it can feel less novel if you are looking for a changing destination every lap. Mario Kart asks you to master variations within a known framework; CrossWorlds asks you to adapt to a framework that changes during the race.
Which game is better for different players?
Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when…
- You play primarily on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 and do not need PlayStation, Xbox or PC support.
- Your group wants four-player same-system racing with minimal setup.
- Battle modes and a familiar Mario Kart ruleset are important.
- You prefer to learn fixed circuits and improve through repetition.
- You want the option of 48 additional courses through the Booster Course Pass.
- You are buying for players with very different skill levels and want the most immediately legible controls and choices.
Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds when…
- You want races to move into another world on the second lap and return for the final lap.
- Alternate routes, off-road sections and shortcuts matter more to you than a completely fixed circuit.
- You enjoy adjusting vehicles and gadgets before testing a build.
- You want a Sega-centered roster and a game available across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC storefronts.
- You are comfortable with a newer game whose online experience and balance may continue to change.
Buy both when your group wants different kinds of sessions
The games overlap as accessible kart racers, but they create different reasons to replay a track. Mario Kart is the dependable shared activity for a Nintendo household; CrossWorlds is the more experimental option for players who enjoy changing routes and equipment decisions. Owning both is sensible only if those differences will actually be used—otherwise choose the one that matches your platform and preferred race structure.
Important limitations before you decide
- Do not treat feature counts as quality scores. The vehicle, gadget, character, track and combination totals are publisher specifications.
- Do not assume online parity from the 12-player headline. Both Switch listings show up to 12 online, but that does not establish equal matchmaking, netcode or reliability.
- Check the edition and platform. CrossWorlds has different storefronts and a Switch 2 release date; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a Nintendo title with supported Switch 2 play.
- Check expansion access. The Booster Course Pass is optional, and membership-based access ends when the eligible subscription ends.
- Read current store terms. Prices, DLC lineups, subscription requirements and post-launch balance can change after the dates described here.
Final recommendation
For most Nintendo Switch families and mixed-skill local groups, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the better default: its course-and-battle structure is proven, four-player same-system play is straightforward, and the Booster Course Pass can substantially enlarge the course list. Select it when reliability of the format and easy repeat sessions matter more than novelty.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the more distinctive choice. Pick it when Travel Rings, CrossWorld changes, off-road shortcuts, extensive vehicle and gadget customization, or multi-platform availability are the features that will keep your group playing. Its reported online errors, item-balance concerns and repetitive transition noted by PC Gamer mean you should choose it for those strengths rather than assume it is automatically a replacement for Mario Kart.
