SONIC PICO PARK is an announced, upcoming 2–8-player cooperative action-puzzle game due November 12, 2026. It keeps the series’ emphasis on coordinating a group, but previewed levels add Sonic characters, movement abilities and familiar objects such as rings, springs and loop-de-loops. The important limitation for anyone planning a session is that the announcement does not yet say whether SONIC PICO PARK supports local play, online play, cross-play, a shared-console eight-player setup or a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The original PICO PARK does not support cross-play; PICO PARK 2 does. Those are confirmed differences, not assumptions that can be carried over to the Sonic collaboration.
What is SONIC PICO PARK, and when can you play it?
SONIC PICO PARK is the latest entry in the PICO PARK series, made in collaboration with SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog. PICO PARK Inc.’s official announcement lists Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and PICO CAT as playable characters or featured characters, describes the genre as cooperative action puzzle, and sets the release date for November 12, 2026. The announcement covers Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows and Steam. See the official SONIC PICO PARK announcement for the current platform and release information.
That date is still in the future relative to the latest available announcement information. The page displays an ESRB “RP” placeholder, so a final age rating has not been established. It also does not publish a detailed mode list, an online-service policy, controller requirements or a cross-play statement.
The announcement describes the game as a 2–8-player experience. That confirms the intended group size; it does not by itself confirm eight people on one console, a particular split between couch and online players, or whether people on different platforms can join the same session.

The central comparison is therefore straightforward: the new game changes the theme and previewed mechanics, while its final connection model remains unannounced. If your decision depends on cross-platform online play, PICO PARK 2 is the only one of these three with that feature explicitly documented today.
What Sonic adds to the PICO PARK formula
A June 14, 2026 TechRadar preview by Dashiell Wood covered eight levels at Summer Game Fest. It is useful evidence of the collaboration’s direction, but it is not a review of the complete release. The previewed material combines the cooperative timing and positioning associated with PICO PARK with recognizable Sonic movement and level objects.
Shared ring and laser puzzle
One previewed level required the group to share a gold ring to get past a laser. The important design change is not simply that a Sonic object appears on screen: the ring becomes a coordination problem, requiring players to move and protect a shared resource rather than independently racing through a stage.

Springs and loop-de-loops
Other previewed sections used springs and loop-de-loops. These objects introduce momentum and route planning into the usual “everyone must be in the right place” puzzle structure. A loop may be familiar to Sonic players, but a cooperative version can make one player’s timing determine whether the rest of the group reaches the next platform.
Character abilities as team tools
- Spin Dash: The preview reports access to Spin Dash for every character, giving the whole group a Sonic-style burst of movement rather than limiting the mechanic to Sonic.
- Tails: Tails can fly and carry teammates in the previewed levels, creating a support role that changes how a group solves vertical sections.
- Knuckles: Knuckles can glide, offering another way to cross gaps or reposition during a puzzle.
These observations support a carefully limited conclusion: previewed gameplay uses Sonic abilities to alter cooperative puzzle solutions. They do not establish the complete character roster’s final abilities, the final number of levels, the balance of any mode or what will ship on November 12.

GamesRadar+ reported that Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka described his first reaction to the concept by asking, “Is this gonna be a Sonic game?” in an interview about the collaboration. The same report says an eight-player co-op game was something Sonic Team had never made before, while that style of play was a focus for the PICO PARK team. The comments help explain why the project is better understood as a PICO PARK-style cooperative puzzle with Sonic systems than as a conventional solo Sonic platformer. How many players can join?
All three games in this comparison are documented as supporting 2–8 players. For SONIC PICO PARK, that number comes from the official announcement and is the only confirmed player-count detail. It does not answer several practical questions a group needs before buying:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- How many players can be on one local console?
- Can a session mix local players with remote players?
- Does every remote participant need their own copy?
- Are all listed platforms able to play together?
- Which controllers are supported, and how many are required?
None of those Sonic-specific details is stated on the reviewed announcement page. Do not infer them from the older games’ behavior or from the fact that the headline player count is the same.
For comparison, Nintendo’s US listing for PICO PARK 2 explicitly states local and online multiplayer for 2–8 players. It also says that up to seven players may join online from one Switch, which allows one console to host a local player while other participants connect remotely under the listing’s rules. That is a PICO PARK 2 detail, not a promise about SONIC PICO PARK. The listing is at Nintendo’s PICO PARK 2 store page.
What the original PICO PARK offers
The original PICO PARK launched June 8, 2019 and is listed for Nintendo Switch and Steam. Its official page describes a 2–8-player cooperative puzzle game with 48 levels and three named modes:

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
World mode
World is the main progression-oriented set of cooperative puzzle levels. The group must coordinate movement and actions to clear each stage rather than relying on one player to complete it alone.
Battle mode
Battle changes the emphasis from simply clearing a shared puzzle to competing within the multiplayer framework. It gives a group a different reason to replay the same broad mechanics.
Endless mode
Endless provides a repeatable format instead of stopping at the fixed World-level sequence.
The original game’s official page explicitly says cross-play is not supported. That means a Switch player and a Steam player cannot be treated as members of one cross-platform lobby under the published policy. The page also distinguishes the original release from PICO PARK: Classic Edition, a separate product with different player and online-support details. Do not use Classic Edition’s specifications when answering questions about the 2019 game. The original title’s details are on the official PICO PARK page.
What PICO PARK 2 changes
PICO PARK 2 is the useful comparison point for players who care most about online logistics. PICO PARK Inc.’s developer page gives its release date as August 28, 2024, while Nintendo’s US store listing gives August 27, 2024. The one-day difference appears to be a difference between the developer’s date and the store listing; neither changes the feature comparison.

Cross-play and copies
The developer page says PICO PARK 2 supports cross-play for up to eight players. It also says that players in different locations each need a copy. Cross-play therefore describes platform compatibility, not a free guest-access system.
Modes and content
The developer page lists World, Battle and Endless modes and reports 60 levels. Nintendo’s listing additionally presents Dark mode. Because Dark appears in the Nintendo store description rather than the developer’s abbreviated mode list, it is best treated as a documented listing feature without assuming that every platform displays the same menu wording.
Switch online requirements
For the Switch version, Nintendo identifies local and online 2–8-player support and says online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. It also marks the game as compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. These requirements apply to PICO PARK 2; no equivalent subscription or compatibility rule has been announced for SONIC PICO PARK.
The official PICO PARK 2 page is available at PICO PARK Inc.’s developer page. PICO PARK Inc. also states on that page that the series has passed 5 million downloads worldwide; the page does not provide a separate date for when that count was reached. Downloads are not the same measure as copies sold.

Owning the same game on two platforms is not enough to establish a shared lobby. For SONIC PICO PARK, wait for a title-specific multiplayer FAQ, store-page update or platform support statement before organizing a mixed-platform event.

Which game fits your co-op group?
Choose SONIC PICO PARK if the Sonic mechanics are the attraction
The upcoming game is the only option here with previewed Sonic movement and character abilities built into the PICO PARK-style puzzle format. A group that wants to coordinate around Tails’ flight, Knuckles’ glide, Spin Dash movement, springs and rings has a distinct reason to wait for the new release. The 2–8-player range also suits the same broad group size as the earlier games.
Choose the original PICO PARK if you want a released, fixed design
The original has a known 48-level set, World, Battle and Endless modes, and a clearly stated no-cross-play policy. That makes its limitations predictable: it is suitable when everyone can use the supported platform arrangement, but it is not the choice for a Switch-and-Steam group seeking one shared online session.
Choose PICO PARK 2 if cross-play is the deciding feature
PICO PARK 2 is the documented option for up to eight players across platforms. Plan for every participant in a different location to own a copy, and for Switch online sessions to require Nintendo Switch Online. Its 60 levels and additional mode listing also make it the broader established package, although its content is not Sonic-themed.

Because the game has not launched, use this checklist when the platform stores and official support pages are updated:
- Check the exact multiplayer labels. Look for separate local, online and wireless counts rather than relying on “2–8 players” alone.
- Confirm cross-play by platform. A general “online multiplayer” label does not guarantee that Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC users can share a session.
- Check copy requirements. Find out whether remote participants need separate purchases or whether any guest or local-share option exists.
- Check subscriptions. Confirm whether console online play requires the platform’s subscription service. No Sonic-specific requirement has been published in the reviewed announcement.
- Check controller support and local limits. If your plan involves a living-room group, verify the number and type of controllers supported by your chosen platform.
- Check mode names and level count. Do not assume World, Battle, Endless or Dark mode appears simply because an earlier PICO PARK title used those names.
For a local Switch setup, it is reasonable to plan on needing enough Switch-compatible controllers for the number of people you intend to put on one console, but the Sonic announcement does not yet state the actual local-player or controller requirements. Treat any accessory purchase as provisional until those specifications are published.
Series scale and sales context
The official SONIC PICO PARK announcement says the PICO PARK series has exceeded 8 million copies sold worldwide. That is a series-wide figure, not a sales count for SONIC PICO PARK, which has not released. Separately, the PICO PARK 2 page reports more than 5 million downloads worldwide without giving a separate measurement date. Copies sold and downloads are different metrics and should not be combined.
Bottom line for co-op players
SONIC PICO PARK is an upcoming 2–8-player cooperative action-puzzle game that brings Sonic characters and previewed abilities into the PICO PARK format. Its announced platform list is unusually broad, but its most important practical details—local versus online support, cross-play, copy requirements, controller limits and any console subscription requirement—remain unstated. The original PICO PARK is a released 48-level game with World, Battle and Endless modes and no cross-play. PICO PARK 2 is the established choice for cross-play, supporting up to eight players across platforms while requiring separate copies for players in different locations. Choose the Sonic game for its character-driven mechanics, or choose PICO PARK 2 now if dependable cross-platform online play matters more than the theme.
