Yes, an Apple TV 4K can play a Blu-ray-derived Dolby TrueHD Atmos file through a compatible tvOS media player—but it does not pass the untouched TrueHD bitstream to your receiver. The player decodes the soundtrack, and Apple TV sends the rendered audio as Dolby MAT or multichannel PCM. An Atmos-capable receiver or soundbar can then reproduce the Atmos mix, even though its display may not be receiving TrueHD itself.
What the hack actually does
Dolby TrueHD with Atmos is the lossless audio format used on many Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. Apple TV 4K supports Dolby Atmos output and Dolby MAT, but Apple’s documented output formats do not include Dolby TrueHD bitstreaming.
The reported workaround operates at the application level. A tvOS media player opens a Blu-ray-derived file, decodes its TrueHD/Atmos soundtrack, and hands the resulting audio to the Apple TV audio pipeline. Apple TV then outputs uncompressed audio using Dolby MAT or multichannel PCM over HDMI.

Why the receiver’s “Atmos” label is not proof of TrueHD passthrough
AV receivers and soundbars identify the format they receive, and Dolby MAT can carry Atmos metadata alongside uncompressed audio. Consequently, an on-screen “Atmos” indicator only proves that the device detected an Atmos-capable signal; it does not prove that untouched TrueHD arrived.
Apple specifically warns that, with Continuous Audio Connection enabled, older receivers might indicate an Atmos signal while the audio is actually playing in its original form—stereo, multichannel or Atmos. Treat the front-panel label as a useful clue, not a bitstream analysis.

How to set up the Apple TV route
Use the recommended HDMI chain
- Connect the Apple TV 4K directly to an HDMI input on an Atmos-capable AV receiver or soundbar.
- Connect the receiver or soundbar’s HDMI output to the television.
- Use a certified high-speed HDMI cable rated for the video formats in your system.
Apple documents this direct-to-audio-device arrangement for Atmos. Ordinary ARC connections can be a bandwidth limitation and may not carry Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos form. If your television is between the Apple TV and audio device, test the system with direct HDMI routing before troubleshooting the file or player.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet the tvOS audio options
- Open Settings > Video and Audio on Apple TV.
- Leave Audio Format set to Auto unless a compatibility test requires a manual format. In Auto, Apple TV chooses the best format for the connected equipment and sends uncompressed audio to the speakers.
- Turn on Dolby Atmos when that option appears.
- Enable Continuous Audio Connection if you want seamless transitions between programs. If an older receiver reports Atmos unexpectedly, verify the actual channel content rather than relying on the badge.
Understand the eARC option
Second-generation and later Apple TV 4K models support eARC for receiving full-resolution audio from a compatible television or HDMI device. eARC support still depends on the television and every other component in the chain, so it is not a substitute for checking the receiver’s inputs, HDMI capabilities and audio settings.

Play the file in a compatible tvOS player
Open the Blu-ray-derived file in a player that can decode its Dolby TrueHD/Atmos track. Local-file support and codec handling vary by app, so a player that works for one container or audio track may not work for another. The player must decode the soundtrack before Apple TV can deliver it as MAT or PCM; selecting a TrueHD track alone does not create bitstream passthrough.
What your receiver or soundbar must support
- Dolby MAT or multichannel PCM over HDMI: the audio device must accept the decoded path Apple TV sends.
- An Atmos speaker layout: ceiling, up-firing or other height channels must be configured in the receiver or soundbar for the Atmos mix to be rendered as intended.
- Sufficient HDMI bandwidth: direct HDMI routing is the safest arrangement when ARC causes missing audio or a fallback format.
- Compatible video handling: a receiver may support Atmos while lacking support for a particular HDR or Dolby Vision format. In that case, you may have to choose whether the Apple TV goes through the receiver or directly to the television, with audio returned over a compatible eARC connection where supported.
Apple TV’s workaround versus other playback methods
| Playback method | Audio sent to the receiver | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| UHD Blu-ray player | Original Dolby TrueHD Atmos bitstream over HDMI | Direct, lossless bitstream fidelity from the disc | Requires a dedicated disc player and physical media |
| Apple TV 4K with a compatible local-file player | Decoded audio delivered as Dolby MAT or multichannel PCM | Convenient access to a local library alongside streaming apps | Not TrueHD bitstream passthrough; app and codec support vary |
| Streaming service | Usually Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos | Simple app-based access | Compressed streaming-style Atmos rather than Blu-ray’s lossless TrueHD format |
If your requirement is specifically “send the untouched TrueHD bitstream from a disc,” use a dedicated UHD Blu-ray player. If your priority is consolidating local files and streaming apps on one interface, the Apple TV method can be practical provided your player, HDMI chain and audio device all support the decoded output.

Troubleshooting the common failure points
The Dolby Atmos option is missing
Confirm that the receiver or soundbar is connected and identified as Atmos-capable, then revisit Settings > Video and Audio. A television, switch or ARC-only path can prevent Apple TV from exposing the expected format choices.
The receiver shows PCM instead of Atmos
PCM is part of the decoded-output path, but Atmos rendering still depends on the player preserving the soundtrack’s Atmos information and the receiver accepting that signal. Test the same file with a known-compatible player and connect Apple TV directly to the receiver or soundbar.

There is no sound through the television’s ARC connection
Bypass ordinary ARC and connect Apple TV to the Atmos receiver or soundbar first. Apple warns that ordinary ARC may not carry its high-bandwidth Atmos form. If your equipment supports it, verify eARC on the television and receiver and use compatible HDMI cables.
The receiver says Atmos, but playback sounds like stereo
Disable assumptions based on the front-panel label. Continuous Audio Connection can make older receivers display Atmos while the program remains stereo or another original format. Check the file’s selected audio track, the player’s decode status and the receiver’s speaker-channel information.
What is established—and what is not
The technical report behind this workaround describes route probing, remux checks and codec behavior consistent with application-level decoding and MAT output. Apple’s own documentation confirms Dolby MAT, uncompressed output, Atmos settings and the recommended HDMI topology.
There is no published success rate, latency measurement or controlled listening result for this exact TrueHD-to-MAT method. Its behavior can therefore vary with the tvOS player, file container, receiver, soundbar, television and HDMI path. The reliable distinction is architectural: Apple TV decodes local TrueHD Atmos before output; it does not bitstream TrueHD unchanged.
