HDR playback is available on some Googlebooks, but Google has not identified which models support it. After an HP Googlebook owner reported that YouTube did not show HDR on their device, a response in the discussion said Google is working with partners to expand support across available models. No model list or rollout date was provided.
What Google has said about Googlebook HDR
In a Reddit discussion dated October 10, 2026, an HP Googlebook owner wrote that no YouTube videos they watched showed HDR support. That is one owner’s report, not confirmation of a defect affecting every HP Googlebook. Other commenters described missing HDR indicators on devices including Dell models, but those accounts are anecdotal rather than controlled tests. Read the discussion.
A response in the discussion said: “HDR support, including in YouTube and Netflix, is available on certain Googlebook models today. We are working with our partners to expand HDR support to all available Googlebook models.” A follow-up repeated that some models already have support and said to stay tuned for future updates. The responses do not identify a speaker by name or provide a job title.
The practical answer is limited but clear: some Googlebooks support HDR playback in YouTube and Netflix, and Google says it is working with partners to broaden availability. The response does not say which models qualify now, whether a particular HP or Dell device will receive support, or when any expansion will arrive.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Why an OLED or high-resolution screen doesn’t settle the question
Display specifications alone do not confirm that HDR playback works. HP describes its Googlebook 14 as having a 3K OLED touchscreen with a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Those are screen characteristics; they do not establish HDR compatibility in YouTube or Netflix.
Likewise, Google’s launch announcement says the first Googlebook lineup includes touchscreen displays with resolutions up to 2.8K, but it does not provide a model-by-model HDR list. Googlebooks combine ChromeOS and Android technology, support Android apps through Google Play, and the first wave uses Intel Core Ultra 5 or Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processors. None of those platform or processor details substitutes for confirmation of HDR support on a specific model.

What is known about the first Googlebook lineup
Google announced five models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo on September 21, 2026. Retail availability began October 4 in the U.S. and October 5 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia. Google said the lineup starts at $899. These are launch details, not an HDR compatibility list. See Google’s launch announcement.
HP separately advertises a 3K OLED touchscreen and up to 120Hz variable refresh rate for the HP Googlebook 14. That product information does not say whether HDR playback is supported by service, so it cannot confirm the owner’s YouTube experience or promise a future fix. See HP’s announcement.

How to check a Googlebook before buying or troubleshooting
For a prospective buyer
Ask for confirmation of HDR playback on the exact model and the service you plan to use—YouTube, Netflix, or both. A general claim about Googlebooks, a 3K or OLED panel, or a high refresh rate is not enough to establish that compatibility. Google has not published a model-by-model matrix in the cited announcement or discussion response, so buyers should seek confirmation from the manufacturer or retailer for the precise configuration.
For a current owner
If HDR is missing from a YouTube video’s playback options, treat that as evidence about the experience on your particular device and video—not proof that all devices of the same brand lack HDR. Check the exact model and service when asking support whether it is among the models with HDR today. The public statement does not provide a setting change or workaround, nor does it give an update schedule.

What remains unconfirmed
- Which specific Googlebook models support HDR today.
- Whether the HP Googlebook 14 will gain HDR support, or whether it already supports HDR in a particular configuration.
- Whether reports of missing HDR on HP or Dell devices reflect a broader device-wide issue.
- When Google and its partners will expand support to additional models.
Google’s statement uses “certain” models and “all available Googlebook models” without a count or date. It supports saying that HDR is present on some models and that broader support is in progress; it does not support a definite promise for a named model or release date. Read Google’s Googlebook FAQ.
