Spoilers ahead for the core Solo Leveling story, its epilogue and later licensed material. Sung Jinwoo begins as a hunter considered humanity’s weakest, but a near-fatal dungeon encounter makes him the sole player of a mysterious System that lets him keep leveling. His rise eventually reaches the war between the Rulers and Monarchs.
After the Monarchs’ assault on Earth, Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation to turn time back to before the gates appeared. The reset does not simply give him an ordinary life: the official story description says he continues fighting in the dimensional gap. The comic’s catalog then identifies additional volumes as side stories, while later licensed material follows his family and revisits the post-reset conflict.
What Solo Leveling is about
Solo Leveling takes place in a world where gates connect Earth to another dimension. Monsters emerge through those gates, and people who awaken supernatural abilities become hunters responsible for fighting them. Jinwoo is an exception within that system: he is widely regarded as the weakest hunter and survives dangerous work that stronger hunters can handle more easily.
A deadly dungeon encounter leaves Jinwoo near death. Afterward, a mysterious System selects him as its sole player. Unlike ordinary hunters, whose abilities do not provide a normal path of continual growth, Jinwoo receives game-like tasks and can level up. That premise supplies the story’s central contrast: a hunter who starts below everyone else gains a route to power that other hunters do not have.

Aniplex producer Sota Furuhashi described this premise as “the emotional release of the lowest-ranked hunter gaining the power to level up and take down enemies that were previously out of his league.” The remark, published in an official 2025 interview, explains the appeal of the setup rather than stating an authorial interpretation of the finale.
How Jinwoo’s story grows from raids to a world war
The System changes the meaning of every fight
At first, Jinwoo’s progress is personal and practical. Quests, rewards and level increases give him a way to survive encounters that would once have been impossible. Each victory also changes how he relates to the hunter world: he is no longer limited to the rank assigned when he first awakened. The System is therefore more than a convenient power-up. It is the mechanism that turns a survival story into a long-term transformation.
Dungeon battles reveal a larger conflict
As Jinwoo’s strength grows, dungeon raids stop being the whole story. The danger expands into a conflict involving the Rulers and Monarchs. The ordinary hunter system remains the visible surface of the setting, but Jinwoo’s abilities place him at the center of forces operating on a much larger scale. His progression matters because it eventually determines whether humanity can survive that wider war.
Why the escalation matters to the ending
The story’s final question is not whether Jinwoo can defeat one more monster. It is whether victory can be achieved without accepting the destruction caused by the Monarchs’ attack on Earth. That shift explains why the conclusion uses a time-reversing artifact rather than ending with a conventional raid or duel.

What happens at the end of Solo Leveling?
- The Monarchs attack Earth. The conflict that began with gates and dungeon raids reaches a global crisis. Jinwoo’s personal rise has become part of the decisive war between the Monarchs and their opponents.
- Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation. The official synopsis for the licensed franchise identifies the Cup as the device that lets him go back to a point before the gates appeared. This is the story’s reset, but it is not presented as a casual do-over.
- Time is turned back before the gates. Returning to that earlier point changes the circumstances that led to the public hunter era. The reset addresses the catastrophe that followed the gates’ arrival, rather than merely restoring Jinwoo’s health or changing one battle.
- The war continues in the dimensional gap. The same official description says Jinwoo keeps fighting in the dimensional gap after turning back time. In other words, the ending does not say that every threat vanishes or that Jinwoo retires into an untouched normal life.
The ending combines victory with separation and responsibility. Jinwoo chooses a solution that protects Earth from the consequences of the war, but the cost is that he must continue the fight away from the world whose history he has changed. The reset therefore preserves the stakes of his journey: his power remains necessary, and peace on Earth depends on work that most people cannot see.
What is the Cup of Reincarnation?
The Cup of Reincarnation is the artifact used to turn time back after the Monarchs’ assault. The available official synopsis establishes its function in the finale—returning the story to before the gates appeared—and the continuing mission that follows. It does not establish a scene-by-scene account of every rule, limitation or visual presentation of the Cup, so those details should not be treated as confirmed by the publisher descriptions alone.
“Reincarnation” in the name can be misleading if it is read as a promise that Jinwoo simply starts over with no memory or responsibility. The ending description instead presents a deliberate temporal reversal by Jinwoo, followed by continued combat in the dimensional gap. The important outcome is the changed timeline and the mission that survives it.

Does Jinwoo go back in time, and does the reset erase everything?
Yes. The official Solo Leveling: KARMA story description says that Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation and goes back to before the gates appeared. However, “goes back in time” should not be interpreted as “all consequences are erased.” The same description explicitly says that he continues fighting in the dimensional gap.

That distinction resolves two common misunderstandings:
- The reset is not a return to an ordinary, consequence-free life. Jinwoo still has a war to fight, even though Earth’s public history is changed.
- The reset is not evidence that the entire story was meaningless. His growth, choices and willingness to bear the continuing fight are what make the new outcome possible.
What happens after the core ending?
Comic side stories and the epilogue
The completed core run and the material published after it should be labeled separately. Yen Press lists the comic through volume 13, then identifies volumes 14 and 15 as “Side Stories 1” and “Side Stories 2” on its official series page. Tappytoon’s official comic listing labels the epilogue as available.
Those labels matter because they prevent the side material from being mistaken for additional chapters of the original climax. The core ending is Jinwoo’s use of the Cup and his continuing battle in the dimensional gap. The side stories are published material that follows that core run and can expand the world without changing what the central finale is.

Where Solo Leveling: KARMA fits
Netmarble’s synopsis for Solo Leveling: KARMA frames the dimensional-gap conflict after the reset as a story explored in that game. That establishes an official franchise connection to the post-reset period, but it does not prove that every event in the game is part of the original novel’s ending. Readers should keep the original core conclusion, the comic’s side stories and game material as distinct labeled layers.
Novel, webtoon, comic and anime: what is different?
Solo Leveling exists in several formats, and their endpoints should not be blurred. The original work began as a Korean web novel and was later adapted into a popular webtoon. English publisher listings distinguish the novel and comic editions, while the anime is a separate television adaptation.
| Format or material | What the available official information establishes | How to describe its endpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Original web novel | It is the source story credited to Chugong. | No chapter-level comparison of its final scenes with the webtoon is established by the available official information, so do not claim exact scene identity or difference without direct text evidence. |
| Webtoon / English comic | Yen Press lists the main comic through volume 13, followed by Side Stories 1 and 2; Tappytoon labels the epilogue available. | The core ending is the Cup of Reincarnation reset and Jinwoo’s continuing fight in the dimensional gap; later volumes are separately labeled side stories. |
| Anime | The adaptation is produced by Aniplex and Crunchyroll, animated by A-1 Pictures, and discussed by its producers as following the webtoon closely while adding psychological depth for other characters. | The producer interview does not establish that the anime has reached the core finale. Treat its currently released episodes as an adaptation endpoint, not automatic proof of the printed ending. |
| Later licensed material | Netmarble’s KARMA synopsis revisits the dimensional-gap conflict after the reset; later comic material introduces Sooho. | These works expand or revisit the post-reset period and should not be presented as a replacement for the original ending. |
Who created Solo Leveling?
Chugong is credited with the original story. DUBU of REDICE STUDIO is credited with illustration in the novel-related material, while the comic credits list DISCIPLES of REDICE STUDIO as the comic artist. H-goon is credited with screenplay or adaptation duties in the published and interview materials.
The anime producers explained that the source’s compact, protagonist-focused chapters could feel repetitive if transferred directly to television. The anime therefore adds other characters’ psychological perspectives while aiming to follow the webtoon closely. That is an adaptation choice, not evidence that the ending’s Cup-of-Reincarnation outcome has been rewritten.

Names in different localizations
The Japanese webtoon version uses the name Shun Mizushino, while overseas releases use Sung Jinwoo. This article follows the overseas name “Sung Jinwoo.” When comparing editions, use the name associated with the localization rather than treating the variation as a different character.
How to read the story after learning the ending
Readers who want the illustrated version can use the official English comic listings from Yen Press or the official digital listing on Tappytoon. The Yen Press catalog identifies the core comic volumes and then the side-story volumes, making it possible to stop at the main conclusion or continue into the epilogue material.
Readers who prefer prose can follow the English novel collection listed by Yen Press, which is presented as an eight-novel collection or omnibus series. These catalog pages establish the editions and ordering information; current retailer inventory and prices can change independently.

- Gates connect Earth to another dimension, and awakened hunters fight the monsters that emerge.
- Jinwoo, regarded as the weakest hunter, nearly dies in a dungeon.
- The System chooses him as its sole player and gives him the unusual ability to keep leveling.
- His growth carries him from personal dungeon survival into the conflict between the Rulers and Monarchs.
- The Monarchs attack Earth, turning the hidden conflict into a decisive global crisis.
- Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation to turn time back to before the gates appeared.
- He continues fighting in the dimensional gap, while later side stories and licensed works explore what follows.
That sequence is the complete shape of the ending supported by the official publisher, platform and production descriptions: a weakest-hunter origin, System-driven ascent, Monarch war, temporal reset and an ongoing mission beyond the restored timeline.
