SolidCraft does not publish a numeric minimum for CPU, RAM, storage, GPU model, or VRAM. The practical requirement is a computer whose graphics driver exposes a working backend for SolidCraft, plus enough CPU, memory, and disk capacity for the size of the parts and assemblies you model. A dedicated graphics card is not universally required: SolidCraft can be configured for hardware, software, or CPU rendering, although hardware and software modes fail rather than silently falling back to CPU rendering.

SolidCraft is an open-source parametric 3D CAD application written in pure Rust. It is available as a desktop application, a browser build, a headless command-line workflow, and an MCP form. Windows, macOS, and Linux installation paths are documented, and the browser build is an alternative when installing software is not practical.

What SolidCraft officially requires

The published documentation describes supported workflows and graphics controls, but it does not define a conventional minimum-specification table. That distinction matters when you are buying a computer: any list claiming an official minimum processor, memory capacity, graphics card, VRAM amount, or disk size is adding information SolidCraft itself has not published.

Area What the documentation establishes
Desktop operating systems Windows builds, a macOS DMG installer, and Linux AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap packages are documented.
Browser use The browser build uses WebGPU or WebGL2. The product guidance recommends a desktop browser with a mouse.
Source builds Building from source requires stable Rust 1.95 or newer.
Rendering selection SOLIDCRAFT_GPU accepts auto, hardware, software, or cpu.
Adapter inspection solidcraft-cli gpu lists available adapters and the tier a snapshot would use.
Official numeric hardware minimums No minimum CPU model, RAM amount, storage capacity, GPU model, or VRAM figure is stated in the primary documentation.

Because there is no benchmark-based tier system, treat the rest of this guide as a buying method rather than a set of invented specifications. Start with graphics compatibility, then match processor responsiveness, memory headroom, storage, display, and portability to your actual CAD workload.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do you need a dedicated GPU?

No. SolidCraft exposes multiple rendering modes, so a machine with integrated graphics may be usable if its driver provides a functioning WebGPU, WebGL2, or native graphics path. A dedicated GPU is a sensible preference for consistently interactive 3D navigation, larger assemblies, high-resolution displays, or a laptop whose integrated graphics are known to be weak, but it is not an official prerequisite.

What the rendering modes mean

  • Auto: lets SolidCraft choose the available path.
  • Hardware: requests a hardware graphics adapter. The guide says this mode fails if a suitable adapter or backend is unavailable; it does not fall back to CPU rendering.
  • Software: requests software rasterization. It also fails instead of falling back to CPU mode when the requested path cannot be initialized.
  • CPU: explicitly requests CPU rendering. This can keep a model usable on a system with poor graphics support, but interactive work may be substantially slower.

Keep the graphics driver current for the operating system you use. A newer card with an obsolete or broken driver can be less useful than a modest adapter with a supported backend.

Check the adapter before buying around a problem

After installing the command-line components, run:

solidcraft-cli gpu

The command reports the adapters SolidCraft can see and the tier a snapshot would use. Run it on the exact computer and operating-system image you intend to use, especially on a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics. If the expected adapter is missing, update the graphics driver, check that the application is using the intended GPU, and rerun the inspection before assuming the hardware is inadequate.

CPU, memory, storage, and display: how to choose sensibly

CPU responsiveness

Parametric CAD repeatedly rebuilds sketches, constraints, feature timelines, and assemblies. For that reason, prioritize a current CPU with strong per-core responsiveness over a large core count purchased solely for SolidCraft. More cores can help when other applications are running, but the documentation provides no SolidCraft benchmark or processor ranking. A computer that feels quick during ordinary interactive modeling is a better target than a workstation selected from a synthetic core-count comparison.

RAM headroom

SolidCraft’s practical memory demand depends on model complexity, imported geometry, display resolution, and what else is open. A small part with a few features is a different workload from a multi-component assembly containing imported meshes. Choose enough memory to keep the operating system, SolidCraft, and your normal reference tools responsive at the same time. If you routinely open several large models or keep a browser, documentation, and rendering tools alongside CAD, additional headroom is more valuable than meeting an arbitrary number copied from an unofficial list.

SSD capacity and speed

An SSD improves application launch, project loading, autosave behavior, and the handling of imported and exported geometry. Leave working space rather than filling the drive: SolidCraft can open STEP, IGES, 3MF, STL, and OBJ files and saves designs as .solidcraft files. Keep room for source files, derived meshes, backups, and multiple revisions. Capacity should reflect the size and retention period of your projects, not a supposed SolidCraft minimum that the documentation does not state.

Display and input

CAD benefits from a sharp, spacious display because feature trees, sketches, constraints, and the 3D viewport compete for space. Resolution is a usability choice rather than an official requirement; higher resolution also increases the graphics workload. A comfortable mouse is more important than a particular brand or model. SolidCraft’s product guidance specifically recommends a desktop browser with a mouse for the web experience, and the same style of input is generally preferable for desktop navigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Portability, thermals, and warranty

For a laptop, consider sustained cooling, power limits, battery behavior, and the ability to select the high-performance GPU. Two machines with similar component names can behave differently once a long rebuild or assembly session heats the chassis. For a desktop, favor a reliable graphics driver path, adequate cooling, and a warranty that covers the graphics hardware. These are buying priorities inferred from CAD use; SolidCraft does not publish a certified workstation list.

Choose a computer by workload

SolidCraft currently covers sketching, constraints and dimensions, timeline-based solid features, components with joints, sheet metal, and a subset of plastic-enclosure work. Surfaces, drawings, CAM, and simulation are deferred. Buy for the first group of tasks you will perform now, not for capabilities that are not yet part of the application.

Work pattern Priorities Reasoning
Sketches and small parametric parts Responsive CPU, stable integrated or discrete graphics, SSD, comfortable mouse These models usually benefit most from quick interaction and reliable viewport acceleration; an expensive graphics workstation is not automatically necessary.
Feature-rich parts and sheet-metal designs Strong single-thread responsiveness, additional memory headroom, current graphics driver Rebuilds and feature edits can become more noticeable as the timeline grows, while graphics stability keeps navigation predictable.
Assemblies with joints Fast CPU, more RAM headroom, capable hardware graphics path, good cooling More components increase rebuild, display, and multitasking pressure. Sustained performance matters during long sessions.
Imported STEP, IGES, STL, OBJ, or 3MF work SSD capacity, memory headroom, graphics compatibility Imported geometry and exported meshes add storage and may be heavier to display than a simple native part.
Browser-only or occasional access Desktop browser with WebGPU or WebGL2 support, mouse, reliable network and browser updates The browser build avoids local installation, but its graphics path still depends on the browser and operating system.
CAM, drawings, surface modeling, or simulation Do not buy a SolidCraft-specific workstation on the assumption these workflows are available Those areas are deferred in the current feature scope, so select other software and hardware requirements separately if they are essential.

Desktop, browser, CLI, and MCP workflows are different

SolidCraft’s forms are related but should not be treated as interchangeable during setup or troubleshooting.

Desktop application

The desktop route provides the conventional interactive CAD experience. Use the release asset that matches both your operating system and CPU architecture. On macOS, the documented path is a DMG; on Linux, AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap paths are available; Windows builds are also documented. Verify architecture before downloading because a correct operating-system label alone does not guarantee that the binary matches your processor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser build

The browser option is useful on managed computers or when local installation is unavailable. Use a desktop browser and a mouse, keep the browser current, and check whether WebGPU is available. WebGL2 is another documented browser path. Browser graphics settings and extensions can affect the result, so test the browser workflow separately from a desktop installation.

Headless CLI and MCP

The headless command-line and MCP forms support automation-oriented workflows rather than replacing every interactive desktop action. The CLI is also useful for inspecting graphics adapters with solidcraft-cli gpu. Keep command-line troubleshooting separate from browser troubleshooting: they may use different drivers, permissions, environment variables, and execution contexts.

Building from source

If you compile SolidCraft yourself, the getting-started guide specifies stable Rust 1.95 or newer. A source build adds toolchain maintenance to the hardware decision, so use it when you need development or unreleased changes rather than as a requirement for ordinary users.

Installation and first-run validation

  1. Identify the target environment. Decide whether you need the desktop app, browser build, CLI, MCP workflow, or more than one. Record the operating system and CPU architecture.
  2. Use the matching release path. Select the Windows build, macOS DMG, or Linux AppImage, Flatpak, or Snap route documented for your system. For source builds, install stable Rust 1.95 or newer.
  3. Update graphics support. Install the current graphics driver supplied for your operating system and GPU. On laptops, confirm that SolidCraft is allowed to use the intended adapter.
  4. Inspect adapters. Run solidcraft-cli gpu and verify that the expected adapter appears and that the reported snapshot tier is reasonable for your workload.
  5. Start with automatic selection. Use SOLIDCRAFT_GPU=auto unless you have a reason to force a mode. If you must diagnose a known path, test hardware, software, or cpu explicitly according to your operating system’s environment-variable method.
  6. Open a representative model. Test a file close to your real work, not only an empty document. Try sketch edits, a feature rebuild, viewport rotation, and an assembly if assemblies are part of your plan.
  7. Test import and save. Open one of the supported exchange formats and save a native .solidcraft design. Confirm that the project location has enough free SSD space for revisions and exports.
  8. Record the working configuration. Note the operating system, driver version, selected GPU mode, and whether the desktop or browser path was used. This makes later troubleshooting much faster.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely area What to try
The desktop app will not start or the viewport is blank Driver, backend, or architecture mismatch Confirm the release asset matches the operating system and CPU architecture, update the graphics driver, run solidcraft-cli gpu, and test an explicit supported mode.
Hardware mode fails Unsupported or unavailable hardware backend Do not expect automatic CPU fallback. Check adapter visibility and driver support, then try software or CPU mode if your performance needs allow it.
Software mode fails Software renderer cannot initialize in the current environment Inspect the graphics stack and permissions, then test CPU mode explicitly. A failure in software mode does not prove that the physical GPU is defective.
CPU mode works but feels slow Rendering is using the processor Use the mode only as a diagnostic or fallback, update the driver, and move to a machine with a reliable hardware graphics path if interactive modeling is important.
The browser build behaves differently from desktop Browser backend, permissions, extensions, or browser version Test with a current desktop browser, check WebGPU or WebGL2 availability, and compare results without extensions that alter graphics behavior.
Large imports take a long time or consume disk space Geometry size, memory headroom, and project storage Use an SSD with working room, close unnecessary applications, retain only needed mesh exports, and keep native revisions organized.

Files, interoperability, and storage planning

SolidCraft opens STEP, IGES, 3MF, STL, and OBJ files and stores designs as .solidcraft. That mix supports exchange with other CAD and mesh tools, but it also creates several copies of the same design: the source exchange file, the native working file, exported meshes, and backups. Plan folders and backup capacity around the complete lifecycle rather than the size of one native file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep original imports unchanged so you can repeat a conversion or diagnose a bad translation.
  • Save native designs in versioned folders instead of overwriting the only working copy.
  • Separate high-resolution mesh exports from lightweight previews.
  • Back up the project directory to another device or service; an SSD is not a backup by itself.

Where to spend money—and where not to

Spend first on a dependable graphics driver/backend, a responsive CPU, enough memory for your largest current assemblies, and SSD space for active projects and backups. A good display and mouse can improve daily productivity more than a small increase in theoretical graphics performance.

Do not pay for a simulation- or CAM-class workstation solely because those labels sound appropriate for CAD. SolidCraft’s documented current scope does not include surfaces, drawings, CAM, or simulation. Revisit the hardware decision when those workflows become available or when another application in your toolchain requires them.

Likewise, do not reject a computer simply because it lacks a dedicated GPU. Validate its graphics path with the documented adapter inspection command and a representative model. Conversely, do not assume a discrete GPU guarantees success: driver and backend support remain decisive.

Final buying checklist

  • Match the download to your operating system and CPU architecture.
  • Prefer an SSD and reserve space for imports, exports, native files, and revisions.
  • Choose a current, well-supported graphics driver and verify the adapter with solidcraft-cli gpu.
  • Use a dedicated GPU when your assemblies, display resolution, or laptop graphics justify it, not because SolidCraft publishes one as mandatory.
  • Prioritize CPU responsiveness and memory headroom according to the size of your models and the other applications you run.
  • Use a desktop browser and mouse when the browser build is the practical option.
  • Keep desktop, browser, CLI, and MCP troubleshooting separate because their execution environments differ.
  • Budget for the features SolidCraft supports now; evaluate other software separately for deferred surface, drawing, CAM, and simulation work.
