Neither rooftop solar panels nor solar farms are universally more efficient. The answer changes with the metric: a panel’s conversion efficiency, a system’s annual AC capacity factor, or the energy produced per unit of land. A rooftop array and a utility-scale farm are also different system designs, not simply two sizes of the same installation.
For a defensible comparison, compare equivalent modules under the same test conditions, normalize annual AC output for location and equipment, and state whether land means the whole project boundary or only the area physically occupied by equipment. Once those definitions are fixed, a farm may lead on annual yield, a roof may lead on use of an existing surface, or the result may be effectively tied.
Start by defining “efficient”
A solar module converts sunlight into direct-current electricity. An array combines modules, inverters, wiring, mounting and controls. A solar farm is a complete, usually ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) power plant with site infrastructure. Comparing one module with an entire farm mixes different levels of the system.
The U.S. Department of Energy says residential solar is most commonly installed on rooftops, while utility-scale and other large projects have more flexibility in where they are sited. Its large-scale solar research page generally uses a threshold of more than 1 megawatt for large-scale projects. See DOE’s large-scale solar siting resources and large-scale solar siting research.

| Efficiency question | What you calculate | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Module conversion | Electrical power from sunlight received by the module under a stated test condition | Shows how much roof or array area is needed for a given nameplate capacity |
| Capacity factor | Annual AC energy divided by the energy the plant would make at rated capacity every hour | Shows how fully the installed AC capacity is used over a year |
| Land productivity | Annual energy divided by a clearly defined area | Shows energy yield per square metre, hectare or acre |
| Practical siting | How well the design fits the available roof or project site | Determines whether theoretical performance can be achieved in the real location |
These metrics answer different questions. A high-efficiency module can still produce little annual energy if it is shaded. A project with a strong capacity factor can occupy more land because rows need spacing. A rooftop can use a surface that already exists, yet have less usable area or a less favorable orientation than a ground-mounted plant.
Module conversion efficiency: usually a like-for-like comparison
Rooftop and utility-scale projects can use the same classes of PV modules. The reviewed technical sources do not establish an inherent conversion-efficiency advantage for modules merely because they are installed on a roof or in a farm. The module’s cell technology, electrical design and rated test result matter more than the setting.
How to compare module specifications
- Use the same rating convention, such as the manufacturer’s standard test-condition power and efficiency.
- Compare modules with the same test irradiance, temperature and spectrum. A percentage from one test protocol is not automatically comparable with a percentage from another.
- Check the module dimensions. Two modules with the same efficiency can require different mounting footprints because their rated wattage and physical size differ.
- Record the temperature coefficient, degradation specification and low-light behavior if you are estimating lifetime or seasonal output rather than just nameplate performance.
Module efficiency is a useful first screen when area is scarce. On a roof, higher efficiency can fit more rated power into the usable roof sections. On a farm, module area is only one part of the layout: row spacing, access roads, setbacks, drainage, terrain and electrical equipment also occupy the project site.

Efficiency is measured under a defined condition. Real sunlight changes by hour and season, and the module temperature, angle of incidence, soiling and shading change with it. The annual energy from an array therefore depends on the complete system and its environment. Treat the module percentage as an input to an energy model, not as a prediction of yearly kilowatt-hours.
Capacity factor: the right metric for annual AC yield
The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) defines capacity factor as “the expected annual average energy production divided by the annual energy production assuming the plant operates at rated capacity for every hour of the year.” In practical terms:
capacity factor = annual AC energy ÷ (AC rated power × 8,760 hours)
The numerator should be annual alternating-current energy after the conversion and delivery losses included in your system boundary. The denominator uses the AC rating, not an unrelated DC module total. State whether the rating is inverter AC capacity or another convention, because a different DC-to-AC ratio changes the result.

What the NLR range means
NLR’s 2025 Annual Technology Baseline for utility-scale PV models estimated 2021 first-year mean AC capacity factors from 21.1% to 33.5% across ten U.S. solar-resource classes. Those are modeled utility-scale results under the ATB’s stated resource and technology assumptions; they are not a controlled rooftop-versus-farm comparison and should not be presented as a universal farm range.
NLR identifies several drivers of capacity factor:
- the site’s solar resource and its hourly or seasonal profile;
- module and plant technology, including bifacial operation;
- ground reflectivity, or albedo;
- fixed-tilt versus single-axis or other mounting-axis choices;
- row-to-row and nearby-object shading;
- planned and unplanned downtime;
- inverter and other electrical losses; and
- the DC-to-AC capacity ratio.
A rooftop model must use the same discipline. A roof with multiple orientations, partial shade or frequent inverter clipping may have a different capacity factor from a well-oriented ground array, but the difference is not caused by the label “rooftop” alone.
Historical figures need a date and scope
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a 27% AC capacity factor for U.S. solar PV facilities operating in 2017. That figure appears in its 2018 article, “Solar plants typically install more panel capacity relative to their inverter capacity”. It is historical context for the facilities and year covered, not a current rooftop-versus-farm estimate. Equipment, plant design, resource mix and reporting conventions can all change the result.
Land efficiency depends on the denominator
“Energy per acre” is ambiguous unless you identify which acre is being counted. NLR’s land-use work distinguishes the total area inside a project boundary from the direct area occupied by arrays and supporting infrastructure. The definitions are described in Land-Use Requirements for Solar Power Plants in the United States.

Total project-boundary area
Total area includes the complete boundary used to host the project. Depending on the project and the accounting method, that boundary can encompass spaces between rows, access routes, setbacks and other shared infrastructure areas. This is the appropriate denominator when asking how much land a development reserves or controls.
Directly occupied area
Direct area counts the land physically occupied by arrays and supporting equipment. It answers a narrower engineering question: how much surface is directly covered or built upon. It can make a tightly packed layout look more land-efficient than the same project measured by its full boundary.
How a roof fits the comparison
A roof generally has no new ground project boundary, but it does have a finite usable surface. Report the roof’s usable module area and, separately, any area needed for inverters, racking, walkways, fire access or other equipment. Comparing a roof’s module footprint with a farm’s total boundary is not an apples-to-apples result. Use the same boundary definition for both, or publish both direct-area and total-area results.

Why a solar farm can have a higher annual yield
A farm can be designed around the solar resource rather than around an existing building. A developer may select a site with favorable irradiance, orient rows consistently, use tracking where appropriate and arrange electrical equipment for predictable operation. Those choices address the same factors NLR lists as capacity-factor drivers; they do not create a universal advantage for every farm.
Tracking and row geometry
Ground-mounted projects can use a common mounting axis and engineered row spacing. Tracking can increase the sunlight captured at particular times, while spacing must limit inter-row shading and leave room for maintenance. The gain depends on the local solar profile, tracker design, terrain, wind conditions and operating assumptions.
Fewer roof-specific constraints
A roof may contain several planes, obstructions, parapets, vents or equipment that force modules into different orientations. A farm usually has more freedom to choose a single layout across a larger area, although topography, setbacks, drainage and grid interconnection still constrain it.
Scale and electrical design
A utility project can centralize inverters, transformers, monitoring and maintenance access. Centralization can simplify a model, but it does not remove conversion losses or downtime. The reported capacity factor still depends on the chosen DC-to-AC ratio, inverter availability and the exact AC boundary.
Why a rooftop array can be the better use of space
A rooftop system places modules on an existing building surface rather than reserving a separate ground site. That can make the roof the preferred option when the question is whether new land must be dedicated to generation. It does not prove that the roof produces more electricity per square metre: roof orientation, shading, structural limits and equipment clearances still determine usable output.

Roof constraints to document
- Usable roof sections after excluding shaded or obstructed areas;
- orientation and tilt of each roof plane;
- nearby buildings, trees or rooftop equipment that cast shade;
- structural and wind-load limits;
- walkways, fire setbacks and maintenance access;
- inverter locations, cable routes and electrical interconnection limits; and
- future roof repairs or replacement that could require module removal.
These constraints can lower annual AC output even when the modules themselves have excellent conversion ratings. Conversely, a simple, unshaded roof with a favorable orientation can perform very well without tracking.
How to make an apples-to-apples calculation
Use the following workflow for a real comparison. Keep the assumptions in a worksheet so another person can reproduce the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose the decision metric. Decide whether you care about module area, annual AC energy, capacity factor, total project land, direct occupied area or a combination. Do not call one metric “overall efficiency” without naming it.
- Fix the location and study period. Use the same geographic point or clearly stated sites, the same weather data period and the same treatment of leap years. Solar-resource differences can overwhelm equipment differences.
- Define the system boundary. State whether energy is measured at the inverter output, after a transformer, or at a delivery point. Use the same boundary for roof and farm.
- Normalize module inputs. Record module rated power, efficiency, dimensions, temperature coefficient and degradation assumptions under the same test convention.
- Describe the mounting. Document tilt, azimuth, fixed or tracking operation, row spacing and any roof-plane differences. Include bifacial assumptions and the albedo used by the model when relevant.
- Model shading and losses. Include horizon and near-object shade, soiling, wiring, mismatch, inverter conversion, transformer, availability and curtailment losses. Do not hide these in one unexplained derating percentage.
- State the DC-to-AC ratio. List total module DC nameplate and inverter AC rating. A larger DC array can improve inverter utilization but may also increase clipping, so annual AC output and capacity factor must be calculated from the same ratings.
- Calculate annual AC energy. Sum hourly or subhourly modeled AC output for the full year after the chosen losses and downtime.
- Calculate capacity factor. Divide annual AC energy by AC rated power multiplied by 8,760 hours. Report the year, location and rating convention next to the percentage.
- Calculate both land measures. For the farm, report total project-boundary area and direct occupied area when both are available. For the roof, report usable roof area and the equipment footprint using matching definitions.
- Run sensitivities. Recalculate for plausible changes in shading, tracker availability, inverter sizing, degradation, soiling and solar resource. A ranking that changes under small assumption shifts is not a robust universal conclusion.
Worked formulas with an illustrative example
The following is a calculation template, not a measured result. Suppose a rooftop system and a ground system each have an explicitly stated AC rating, and each produces a modeled annual AC total.
Rooftop capacity factor = rooftop annual AC kWh ÷ (rooftop AC kW × 8,760)Farm capacity factor = farm annual AC kWh ÷ (farm AC kW × 8,760)Rooftop direct-area productivity = rooftop annual AC kWh ÷ rooftop direct areaFarm boundary productivity = farm annual AC kWh ÷ farm total boundary area
Only compare the two capacity factors directly if the ratings, time period, weather basis and AC boundary match. Only compare the two land-productivity values directly if both denominators represent the same kind of area. If one value uses a roof’s module footprint and the other uses a farm’s entire boundary, present them as different metrics rather than declaring a winner.
Which option fits common decisions?
| Decision | Most useful evidence | What can mislead you |
|---|---|---|
| Fitting more generation on a limited roof | Module efficiency, module dimensions, usable roof area and modeled annual AC output | Using nameplate watts alone while ignoring shade and roof-plane orientation |
| Choosing a site for a large plant | Solar-resource profile, modeled capacity factor, tracking assumptions, grid access and total boundary area | Applying a utility-scale capacity-factor estimate to a rooftop without re-modeling it |
| Comparing land commitments | Annual energy per total project-boundary area, with direct area shown separately where available | Calling direct equipment footprint the farm’s entire land requirement |
| Estimating delivered electricity | Annual AC energy at a stated system boundary, including losses, downtime and curtailment assumptions | Equating panel conversion efficiency with delivered annual energy |
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Calling the highest module percentage the most efficient system
Correction: Use module efficiency to assess area requirements, then model annual AC energy with the site’s sunlight, temperature, orientation and losses.
Using capacity factor as a module specification
Correction: Capacity factor is a plant-level annual utilization metric. It includes resource, mounting, shading, downtime, inverter behavior and DC-to-AC choices.
Presenting the NLR 21.1%–33.5% range as a rooftop benchmark
Correction: Identify it as the 2025 ATB’s modeled utility-scale PV range across ten U.S. resource classes and build a separate rooftop model.

Quoting the EIA 27% figure as current
Correction: Identify it as the EIA-reported AC capacity factor for U.S. solar PV facilities operating in 2017, published in 2018.
Mixing DC and AC ratings
Correction: Put the DC module total and AC inverter rating in separate fields. Use the AC rating in the capacity-factor denominator when annual AC energy is the numerator.
Mixing land boundaries
Correction: Label every area as total project boundary, direct occupied area, usable roof area or another explicit category. Convert units before comparing.
Assuming tracking guarantees superiority
Correction: Test tracking against fixed mounting with the same location, weather data, availability, shading, albedo, costs and land definition. Tracking is a design choice, not a universal efficiency verdict.
Bottom line for a fair verdict
If “efficient” means module conversion, neither rooftop panels nor farm panels win by location alone; compare the actual modules under identical test conditions. If it means annual AC capacity factor, a well-sited, consistently oriented and appropriately operated farm may outperform a constrained roof, but the result must be modeled for the specific sites. If it means energy per land area, the answer depends on whether you count the farm’s full boundary or only directly occupied ground, and on how you define the rooftop area.
The most accurate conclusion is therefore conditional: identify the metric, match the system boundary and assumptions, and report the result with its location, date, equipment and area definitions. Without those details, “solar panels versus solar farms” is not a single efficiency comparison.
