There is no universal switch sequence that makes every solar panel electrically dead. Use the shutdown procedure for your exact inverter and system, and only operate clearly identified user controls described in its manual. Sunlit panels can continue producing DC power after an inverter is switched off, so do not open electrical enclosures or disconnect PV wiring to prepare for cleaning. If you cannot identify the correct controls or safe access route, hire a qualified solar electrician or cleaner.
What does “turn off solar panels” actually mean?
People often use “turn off the panels” as shorthand, but the controls normally shut down an inverter or isolate parts of the electrical system—not the sunlit modules themselves. A solar panel produces direct current (DC); an inverter converts that electricity to alternating current (AC). Switching off an inverter stops conversion, but does not necessarily stop panels in daylight from generating DC. The U.S. Department of Energy explains the inverter’s role in its overview of inverters and grid services.
Solar installations may have AC-side and DC-side disconnects, and the equipment and control layout vary by system. String-inverter and microinverter systems do not necessarily have the same isolation arrangement. The U.S. Department of Energy’s On-Site Solar Decision Guide describes these system differences; it does not provide one cleaning-specific sequence for every installation.
How to prepare your system for cleaning
- Identify the system and its manual. Find the inverter make and model and the system’s shutdown instructions. The approved procedure depends on the equipment and installation.
- Follow only the manual’s user-operated controls. Use the exact controls and order specified for your system. Do not guess which switch is a disconnect or assume a particular location or sequence applies to your installation.
- Do not open enclosures or handle PV wiring. Do not remove connectors, open an inverter, or treat a display showing “off” as proof that every conductor is safe to touch.
- Stop if anything is unclear. Contact the installer or a qualified solar electrician for help with shutdown or isolation. If the panels are on a roof or access is unsafe, use a qualified cleaning professional rather than attempting the work yourself.
There is no cleaning-specific shutdown order established for all system models and configurations. If you cannot verify the right procedure in the manual, do not improvise.

Why an off switch may not make the system safe to touch
A disconnect can isolate one part of a system while another remains energized. In an incident dated July 23, 2008, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration reported that a DC disconnect shut off DC entering an inverter cabinet when it was opened, while AC lines remained energized from the power-line connection. The incident resulted in an arc-flash injury. It involved a specific installation, not every home solar system, but it shows why operating one disconnect is not proof that all equipment is safe to touch. Read the OSHA incident report.
DOE operation-and-maintenance guidance discusses shutdown and disconnection when making damaged areas safe; it is not a cleaning procedure or a substitute for your system’s manual. It also cautions that simply cycling a tripped system may not address the underlying problem. See DOE’s guidance on operating and maintaining an existing PV system.
Does cleaning require turning the system off?
The cited guidance does not establish a universal rule that every cleaning job requires the same shutdown sequence. Cleaning methods, access, and electrical controls differ. Follow the system manual and the cleaner’s safe-work procedure; do not touch electrical components or wiring. When electrical isolation or roof access is uncertain, leave the work to qualified professionals.

When cleaning may be worthwhile
Electrical Safety First says many panels have a self-cleaning coating that can let rain clear dirt and debris when panels are installed at a suitable angle. That does not mean rain removes every kind of buildup. The organization also recommends specialist cleaning for accumulated dirt, dust, lichen, and bird droppings, and advises visual checks. It says cleaning could increase energy production by up to 15 percent; that is a general upper estimate from Electrical Safety First, not a guaranteed gain for an individual system. The accessed page does not state a year for the estimate. Read its solar-panel safety advice.
How location affects disconnect guidance
Switch locations, required disconnects, and applicable rules depend on the installation and jurisdiction. Electrical Safety First’s technical guidance for the UK references BS 7671:2018+A3:2024 and regulation 712.537.2.101 when discussing a separate DC isolator and conditions under which inverter isolation may meet the requirement. This is UK technical guidance, not a universal owner instruction or a step-by-step cleaning procedure. See Electrical Safety First’s wiring-regulations help.
