Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe are complementary missions, not competing spacecraft. Solar Orbiter repeatedly looks at the Sun with remote-sensing instruments while also measuring the local plasma and magnetic environment. Parker Solar Probe flies much closer and concentrates on sampling particles and fields around the spacecraft. Together, their observations can connect a visible source region on the Sun with the solar wind measured farther along its journey.

The practical difference is simple: Solar Orbiter helps answer where and how solar activity begins; Parker helps measure what that activity is like in the near-Sun environment. Coordinated observations are designed to join those two perspectives.

Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe at a glance

The missions overlap scientifically, but they are built to observe different parts of the Sun–heliosphere system. Solar Orbiter carries a broad combination of cameras, spectrometers and local-environment sensors. Parker Solar Probe prioritizes direct sampling in the region where the solar wind is still being accelerated and transformed.

Why the missions are complementary

The Sun does not send a single, unchanged signal from its surface to Earth. Magnetic structures, plasma waves and energetic particles evolve as they move through the corona and inner heliosphere. A spacecraft that can image a source region and another that samples the outflow close to the Sun provide different pieces of that chain.

Solar Orbiter can identify a coronal feature, magnetic structure or active region in context. Its local sensors then record the environment at the spacecraft itself. Parker, at a smaller heliocentric distance, samples the particles and fields before the solar wind has traveled as far. Comparing the timing, composition and field signatures helps scientists test whether a measured stream plausibly came from the imaged source.

Neither spacecraft is a universal replacement for the other. A close pass does not automatically provide a clear picture of the solar surface, and a high-quality image does not by itself reveal how the resulting plasma behaves in transit. Their value comes from connecting observations made at different locations and with different measurement methods.

What Solar Orbiter is designed to do

Combine a view of the Sun with local measurements

Solar Orbiter uses two broad instrument families. Remote-sensing instruments detect light coming from the Sun and turn it into images or spectroscopic information about structures in the solar atmosphere. In-situ instruments measure particles, fields and plasma properties in the spacecraft’s immediate surroundings.

That combination lets researchers compare a feature seen at the Sun with the solar-wind conditions encountered by the spacecraft. The mission carries ten science instruments, according to the European Space Agency, and its overarching objective is to study how the Sun creates and controls the heliosphere.

Approach the Sun while retaining a useful viewing geometry

Solar Orbiter approaches to about 42 million kilometres from the Sun. That is close enough to improve the spatial and temporal detail of remote observations while leaving the spacecraft on an orbit that can support repeated measurements over the mission.

Venus gravity assists gradually raise Solar Orbiter’s orbital inclination. As the inclination increases, the spacecraft gains a less Earth-like perspective on the Sun and can observe regions near the solar poles. These views matter because the poles are central to understanding the Sun’s global magnetic field and the way that field connects into the heliosphere.

Build a long-term picture of solar activity

ESA lists Solar Orbiter’s launch in February 2020, its first images in July 2020 and the beginning of routine science operations in November 2021. Those milestones mark the transition from commissioning and early imaging to the sustained observing program needed to follow changing solar conditions.

The mission’s science questions include:

  • What drives the solar wind, and where does the coronal magnetic field originate?
  • How do solar transients drive variability throughout the heliosphere?
  • How do solar eruptions produce energetic particles?
  • How does the solar dynamo create connections between the Sun and the heliosphere?

What Parker Solar Probe is designed to do

Sample the near-Sun environment directly

Parker Solar Probe flies closer to the Sun than Solar Orbiter and emphasizes in-situ sampling. Its instruments measure the particles and electromagnetic fields surrounding the spacecraft, where the solar wind is still close to its source and can retain clues about its acceleration and heating.

In-situ measurements are local by definition: they describe what the spacecraft is physically passing through. They can reveal field direction and strength, particle populations, waves and changes on short time scales. Those measurements are especially valuable for processes that cannot be reconstructed reliably from a distant image alone.

Understand the region where the solar wind forms

The near-Sun environment is where the solar wind changes from a magnetically controlled coronal outflow into the faster, more freely expanding flow observed farther away. Parker’s close passes allow scientists to examine that transition at distances unavailable to a spacecraft operating farther out.

ESA’s comparison of the missions notes that Parker Solar Probe lacks Sun-pointing cameras. That is not a defect in the mission design; it reflects a deliberate instrument emphasis. Parker is optimized to measure the environment around the spacecraft rather than to produce a full disk or high-latitude image of the Sun.

The three axes that distinguish the missions

1. Distance from the Sun

Distance changes what a spacecraft can measure. Solar Orbiter’s mission specification places its closest approach at about 42 million kilometres. Parker goes closer; in the coordinated observation reported by ESA on 28 March 2024, Parker was about 7.3 million kilometres from the Sun while Solar Orbiter was about 45 million kilometres away.

Those numbers should not be read as a permanent formation or as the probes’ current locations. They are measurements from a particular campaign. The scientific advantage is the separation itself: the two spacecraft can observe related solar-wind structures at different stages of their outward travel.

2. Instrument emphasis

Remote sensing and in-situ sampling answer different questions.

  • Remote sensing: detects photons arriving from the Sun. Images show location, shape and evolution; spectroscopy can provide information about the emitting material and its motion.
  • In-situ sampling: measures the particles and fields at the spacecraft. It records the local state of the plasma, including variations that may be too small or too fast to identify in an image.

Solar Orbiter deliberately combines both approaches. Parker’s primary emphasis is the second. A comparison that counts only cameras or only distance misses the reason the missions were designed differently.

3. Orbital viewpoint

Solar Orbiter’s Venus gravity assists increase its inclination and improve its perspective on the solar poles. A polar perspective helps test models of the Sun’s global magnetic field and its links to the heliosphere.

The supplied ESA comparison presents Parker mainly as the close-in sampler. It does not establish a matching polar-imaging role for Parker, so the missions should not be described as having identical viewpoints with different camera resolutions.

How a coordinated observation connects source and solar wind

Coordinated observations are useful when the spacecraft are positioned so that a solar-wind structure observed by Solar Orbiter can later pass Parker. The geometry and travel time must be modeled for each event; there is no single fixed delay that applies to every solar-wind stream.

  1. Locate a candidate source. Solar Orbiter’s remote-sensing instruments image a region on the Sun that is producing an identifiable outflow or transient.
  2. Characterize the source. Scientists examine the region’s magnetic and atmospheric signatures and use Solar Orbiter’s local measurements to describe the surrounding plasma.
  3. Propagate the expected outflow. Models estimate how the solar-wind structure will travel outward and when it could reach Parker’s position.
  4. Measure the arriving structure. Parker records the particles and fields in the near-Sun environment as the predicted outflow passes the spacecraft.
  5. Compare the records. Researchers test whether the timing and measured signatures are consistent with the imaged source, while accounting for expansion, deflection and evolution during transit.

ESA’s 28 March 2024 example illustrates this method. Solar Orbiter was about 45 million kilometres from the Sun and imaged a region producing solar wind expected to reach Parker a few hours later; Parker was about 7.3 million kilometres from the Sun during the campaign. Those distances and the “few hours” interval belong to that event, not to every future observation.

What each mission can tell scientists

Tracing the origin of the solar wind

One central question is, “What drives the solar wind and where does the coronal magnetic field originate from?” Solar Orbiter can inspect candidate source regions and their magnetic context. Parker can test how the resulting plasma and field behave close to the Sun. Together, the measurements help distinguish competing explanations for acceleration and heating.

Explaining heliospheric variability

Solar transients such as eruptive outflows can alter conditions throughout the heliosphere. Solar Orbiter’s images establish when and where a transient begins and reveal its visible development. Parker samples the disturbance earlier in its outward path, providing a close-in measurement of the structure before it has expanded and mixed as extensively.

Understanding energetic particles

Solar eruptions can generate energetic particles. Imaging identifies the eruption and its magnetic setting, while local particle and field measurements show what populations are actually present near the spacecraft. Comparing those records helps constrain how particles are accelerated and transported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mapping the solar dynamo’s connections

The solar dynamo drives changes in the Sun’s magnetic field. Solar Orbiter’s changing inclination and remote observations contribute a broader, more global view, including access to high-latitude regions. In-situ measurements add evidence about how those magnetic structures connect outward into the heliosphere.

How to interpret common “versus” claims

“Which spacecraft is closer?”

Parker Solar Probe is the closer mission. Solar Orbiter’s documented closest approach is about 42 million kilometres, while the March 2024 coordinated campaign placed Parker about 7.3 million kilometres from the Sun. A distance comparison should always identify whether it refers to a mission-design approach or a particular event.

“Which spacecraft takes better pictures?”

That is the wrong primary comparison. Solar Orbiter is the mission in this pair built to combine Sun-pointing remote sensing with in-situ measurements. ESA’s account describes Parker as lacking Sun-pointing cameras because its mission emphasis is direct sampling of particles and fields near the Sun.

“Which mission is more important?”

Importance depends on the scientific question. A source-region question favors Solar Orbiter’s remote observations; a question about the local plasma and magnetic field near the Sun favors Parker’s measurements. The strongest conclusions come from observations that can be related across both spacecraft.

Limits and cautions when using the data

  • A source image is not a complete cause-and-effect proof. Solar-wind structures can evolve, merge or be deflected between the Sun and a spacecraft.
  • A local measurement is not a full-Sun map. Parker measures the environment at its position, so connecting that record to a source requires geometry and propagation modeling.
  • Event distances are not permanent orbital labels. The 45-million-kilometre and 7.3-million-kilometre figures describe the 28 March 2024 campaign.
  • Instrument differences are intentional. The absence of Sun-pointing cameras on Parker in ESA’s comparison reflects its near-Sun sampling strategy, not an omitted capability that Solar Orbiter and Parker were both expected to provide.
  • Mission milestones have dates. Solar Orbiter’s February 2020 launch, July 2020 first images and November 2021 routine-science start describe its development timeline, not a guarantee that every instrument has identical observing conditions at all times.

Bottom line: two perspectives on one solar system

Solar Orbiter supplies the context: images and other remote observations of the Sun, local measurements, and an orbit that increasingly exposes the polar regions. Parker Solar Probe supplies the close-up sampling: particles and fields measured much nearer to the Sun, where the solar wind is still developing.

ESA project scientist Daniel Müller summarized the strategy this way: “The combination of remote-sensing instruments, which look at the Sun, and in situ measurements, which feel its power, will allow us to join the dots between what we see at the Sun and what we experience while soaking up the solar wind.” That is the essential distinction and the reason the missions are most powerful when their observations are analyzed together.
