The best solar home battery is the one sized and configured for your home’s actual backup needs, solar equipment, and utility rules—not a model that is “best” for everyone. Before comparing products, decide which loads you want to run, check how your utility compensates you for exported solar power, and ask installers for comparable, fully itemized quotes.

Decide what you want the battery to do

A battery stores electricity; it does not generate it. Solar panels can charge it, and some configurations can also charge from the grid. The battery can then supply electricity later, such as after sunset or during a power interruption. Charging, storing, and retrieving energy involve conversion losses, so the electricity available later is not a one-for-one substitute for the electricity originally put in.

Pick your main objective before asking for bids. A system intended to keep a few essential circuits running during an outage may differ substantially from one intended to back up most of a home, shift solar power into evening use, or respond to time-of-use rates and demand charges.

  • Outage resilience: Decide which circuits matter and how long they should run without grid power.
  • More self-consumption: Consider whether storing midday solar for evening use is worthwhile under your export-credit rules.
  • Bill management: Check time-varying rates, demand charges, and any program that pays for or controls battery dispatch.
  • Energy independence: Be specific about what independence means. Backup during an outage is not the same as operating off-grid indefinitely.

For the financial case, use your actual bill and utility tariff rather than a generic payback claim. Strong one-to-one net metering and flat rates can reduce the bill savings from storing solar power, while frequent outages or time-varying rates may make storage more valuable. A battery can still be worthwhile for resilience even if the bill savings alone do not justify its cost.

Size for both energy and power

Two specifications answer different questions. Energy capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), indicates how much energy can be stored. Power output, measured in kilowatts (kW), indicates how much energy the system can deliver at a given time. As the U.S. Department of Energy explains, storage systems differ in both the total energy they can store and the amount they can release at a given time.

A battery with enough kWh for a long runtime may still be unable to run several large appliances at once if its power output is too low. Ask the installer to model the actual circuits and appliances you plan to use, including the loads that may start simultaneously.

For essential-load backup

List the circuits you want to keep on, such as a refrigerator, lights, communications equipment, and selected outlets. EnergySage’s 2026 buying guide describes 10–15 kWh as a common starting range for essential-load backup; it is a guide-level heuristic, not a design prescription. Your required capacity depends on the loads, their runtime, and the system configuration.

For whole-home backup or off-grid goals

Whole-home backup that includes electric heating or cooling, cooking, or vehicle charging can require substantially more capacity and output than essential-load backup. Ask for a design based on your home’s loads rather than an estimate based only on the battery’s advertised capacity. If your aim is to go off-grid, ask how the system would meet your needs through extended periods when solar production is limited; a battery by itself does not create energy.

Questions to ask about the sizing model

  • Does the estimate use usable capacity rather than only nominal capacity?
  • What are the system’s continuous and peak power limits, and how are starting surges handled?
  • How much energy is reserved for backup, and how does that reserve affect routine use?
  • What solar recharge is expected during an outage, and what assumptions about sunlight and household use underlie that estimate?

Check what happens when the grid fails

Existing rooftop solar usually will not power the home during a grid outage on its own. Solar systems generally shut down when the grid fails unless suitable equipment and controls safely isolate the home from the grid. A battery and panels on the property do not, by themselves, establish that any particular circuit will remain powered.

Ask the installer to show you the system’s one-line design and explain the islanding and transfer equipment: how the home disconnects from the grid, what switches over, which circuits are backed up, and whether solar can recharge the battery during an extended outage. Get the excluded loads and expected outage behavior in writing.

Compare complete bids, not battery-only prices

Request multiple quotes using the same backup objective and load assumptions. A quote is useful for comparison only when it identifies both the equipment and the work required to make it function in your home.

  • Equipment: Manufacturer and exact model, usable kWh, continuous and peak kW, compatible inverter, and control equipment.
  • Backup design: Circuits covered, islanding and transfer hardware, solar charging behavior during an outage, and the operating modes available for your utility tariff.
  • Warranty: Duration and any covered throughput or performance conditions. Read the warranty document rather than relying on a headline term.
  • Installed scope: Itemized equipment, labor, electrical-panel work, permits, inspections, and utility interconnection. Confirm which items are included and which could add cost.
  • Installer qualifications: Experience with the exact system and the credentials required for the work in your area.
  • Utility programs: Eligibility and any limits on dispatch or homeowner control if the battery participates in a utility or virtual power plant program.

Do not compare a battery-only line item with an all-in installed bid as if they cover the same work. EnergySage’s buying guide also advises buyers to compare model, usable system size, warranty, and whether labor, permits, and interconnection fees are included.

Around $15,000 before incentives EnergySage’s February 2026 guide describes this as what the average homeowner pays for a battery system.
About $15,647 before state or local incentives EnergySage’s August 2026 guide estimates this for a 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 3, based on thousands of EnergySage quotes.

Actual bids can differ with system size, backup hardware, panel work, installation complexity, local labor, permits, and interconnection. EnergySage says its shoppers who receive quotes pay 20% less on average than shoppers who do not comparison shop; treat that as an EnergySage marketplace claim, not an independent national study.

Check your tariff, incentives, and outage exposure

Incentives and utility compensation are location-specific and can change. EnergySage’s 2026 guides report that the federal residential battery tax credit is no longer available to purchasers. State and utility rebates, demand-response programs, and virtual power plant (VPP) programs may still be available; verify current eligibility and terms with the administering agency or utility before including them in a financial calculation. EnergySage cites California’s Self-Generation Incentive Program and Massachusetts ConnectedSolutions as examples, not programs available everywhere.

Outage averages can provide context, but they are not a prediction for an individual household. EnergySage reports EIA data showing that the average U.S. customer experienced 11 hours of electricity interruptions in 2024. State averages varied: South Carolina had 3,137 minutes without power, Maine 1,749, North Carolina 1,441, Florida 1,322, and Texas 1,271. Local conditions and household experience may differ from those statewide figures.

Verify safety listing and local installation requirements

For a stationary residential battery system in the United States, ask whether the complete system—including compatible battery, inverter, and controls—is listed to UL 9540. UL Solutions’ 2025 guidance for code authorities identifies UL 9540 as the appropriate safety standard for residential stationary battery energy storage systems and emphasizes that applicable installation codes matter.

Do not confuse a UL 9540 system listing with UL 9540A. UL 9540A is a test method for evaluating thermal-runaway fire propagation behavior, with testing at cell, module, unit, and installation levels. UL’s current sixth-edition context retains a unit-level test requirement for residential battery energy storage systems. A 9540A test is not the same thing as the product’s UL 9540 listing.

Ask the installer and your local authority having jurisdiction to confirm the adopted electrical and fire codes, placement, clearances, permits, inspections, and utility interconnection conditions. Requirements depend on location and code edition, so an online diagram should not override the locally approved design.

Plan for project timing and payment terms

EnergySage reports that many installations are completed in a day after contracts and permits are ready. That is not the full project timeline: design, utility approval, permitting, equipment availability, and inspection can all take additional time. Ask the installer for a schedule that separates those stages and identifies dependencies.

Cash purchase, loans, and installer- or utility-arranged monthly payment or lease options can have different ownership and service terms. Compare total payments, interest, service obligations, what happens if you sell the home, and who receives any applicable tax benefit. No one payment arrangement is best for every household.
