Short answer: A solar farm monitoring system combines production meters and inverter telemetry with irradiance, module-temperature and ambient-temperature measurements. The data volume is determined by the number of channels, sampling interval and retention policy—not by plant size alone. Remote sites need a deliberately selected backhaul (cellular, satellite, DSL, power-line or another service), and large plants usually distribute weather stations so one sensor does not represent an entire site. Plan calibration, data-quality checks, backups and corrective maintenance from the start.

What a solar farm monitoring system measures

Monitoring is the evidence that a photovoltaic (PV) plant is producing what its equipment, weather and operating model predict. It also provides the time-stamped records needed to investigate alarms, verify availability and plan maintenance. The equipment may be called SCADA, a plant data logger, a performance-monitoring platform or a combination of those systems.

Core electrical and weather channels

  • Production: revenue-grade or production meters report AC energy and, where required, DC energy. Voltage, current, power and cumulative energy support loss calculations and meter checks.
  • Inverters: operating state, alarms, power, voltage, current, temperatures and communications status show whether each conversion unit is available and how it is behaving.
  • Irradiance: a calibrated radiometer or pyranometer provides the sunlight reference used to calculate expected output and performance ratio.
  • Module temperature: temperature at representative modules helps explain power changes that are not caused by faults.
  • Ambient temperature: air temperature provides context for module, inverter and weather-related behavior.

Wind speed and direction, relative humidity, precipitation and soiling measurements are optional channels. They become important when the monitoring class, forecasting model, warranty, availability contract or cleaning program requires them. IEC 61724-1:2021 is the main reference for PV-monitoring terminology, equipment and performance analysis; its current edition also updates requirements related to irradiance and soiling.

Why the measurement context matters

A power value without the associated sunlight and temperature is difficult to interpret. A cloudy interval, a hot module, a tripped inverter and a dirty array can all reduce output, but they require different responses. A properly configured system aligns electrical and meteorological timestamps, records quality flags and preserves enough history to compare like-for-like conditions.

How much data does a solar farm monitoring system use?

There is no universal bandwidth or storage figure. A plant with a few meters sampled every several minutes can use less data than a smaller site exporting high-frequency inverter channels, waveform captures and frequent diagnostic files. Size the system from the plant tag list and the required sampling interval, then add communications overhead for alarms, acknowledgements, software updates and retransmission after an outage.

A practical sizing method

  1. List every tag. Count meter values, inverter values, weather channels, tracker positions, alarms, status flags and calculated channels. Distinguish values that must be retained from values used only for live display.
  2. Set the interval for each tag group. Fast electrical or control data, normal performance data and event records often have different intervals. The required interval should follow the monitoring class, grid or contract requirement and the questions the O&M team must answer.
  3. Estimate record size and overhead. Multiply the number of records by timestamp, value, quality flag and protocol overhead. Include retries, store-and-forward traffic, user access and occasional firmware or configuration transfers.
  4. Model outages. Calculate how much local storage is needed when the backhaul is unavailable, then verify that the logger can resume transmission without creating gaps or duplicate records.
  5. Separate operational and analytical retention. Keep high-resolution data where fault analysis needs it and preserve the aggregated records required for hourly, daily, monthly and annual reporting over the system life.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recommends that data loggers retain six months of data locally and back it up to cloud storage. Six months is a resilience target, not a statement of the data volume for every project: the required capacity still depends on tag count, interval and record format. Ask the integrator for a calculation based on the actual tag list rather than accepting a generic storage allowance.

What should be reported and retained?

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) guidance calls for production to be reportable hourly, daily, monthly and annually throughout the system life. Preserve the raw or appropriately detailed data needed to reproduce those reports, along with time synchronization, sensor calibration records, changes to configuration and the reason for any missing interval. Cloud backup is useful only when restores are tested; a backup that cannot be recovered is not an operational control.

What internet coverage does a remote solar farm need?

There is no fixed coverage radius that works for every site. The right connection is the one that reaches the logger and communications equipment reliably, remains available through expected weather and power events, protects the plant network and gives operators enough latency for alarms and remote work. A signal that is adequate at the control building may be unusable at a field station.

Backhaul options

Connection Where it can fit Decisions and limitations
Cellular Sites within dependable carrier coverage Survey signal at every communications point; check network congestion, roaming, antenna height, power backup and whether the service remains available during storms.
Satellite Very remote sites without usable terrestrial service Confirm view of the sky, weather effects, latency, power consumption, service-area rules and data allowances. It can provide independence from local infrastructure but may cost more.
DSL or other fixed terrestrial service Sites near an available wired connection Verify the provider’s repair access, route diversity, outage behavior and whether the line terminates in the secure plant network.
Power-line or utility communications Facilities where the electrical owner offers a suitable channel Confirm electrical-network compatibility, bandwidth, isolation, ownership and cybersecurity responsibilities.
Site-owned private network Plants with an engineered radio, fiber or microwave network Document coverage, redundancy, maintenance ownership and how field devices are segmented from business systems.

Questions to answer before choosing service

  • What is the measured signal and received quality at the logger, inverter stations and weather stations—not merely at the site entrance?
  • What happens to alarms and historical records during an outage? The logger should store data locally and forward it after the link returns.
  • Can the connection and antennas withstand heat, lightning, flooding, wind and ice expected at the site?
  • Who can access the service for repairs, and how quickly can a technician reach the equipment?
  • How are devices authenticated, segmented and updated? Use encrypted connections, least-privilege accounts, controlled remote access and a documented patch process.
  • Is latency sufficient for the intended task? Monitoring and reporting tolerate more delay than real-time control, so do not promise control performance from a link designed only for data collection.

Some owners will not permit a monitoring vendor to use the site’s existing network. In that case, budget a separate cellular or satellite service and treat its antenna, modem, subscription and power backup as part of the monitoring design. DOE guidance lists cellular, satellite, power-line and other connection choices for remote federal PV systems.

How many monitoring stations and sensors are needed?

Sensor count follows the area and variability that the measurements must represent, not a simple sensors-per-megawatt rule. IEC 61724-1:2021 relates radiometer number and accuracy class to PV peak power. A large plant may therefore need several distributed stations rather than one weather mast at the control room.

Factors that change station placement

  • Terrain and array orientation: ridges, slopes, separate subfields and different tracking blocks can experience different irradiance.
  • Climate: coastal fog, snow, monsoon rain, dust or rapid cloud changes may make one station unrepresentative.
  • Shading and obstructions: nearby rows, buildings, vegetation and masts can bias a radiometer during part of the day.
  • Electrical and electromagnetic interference: cable routes, inverter equipment and grounding arrangements can affect signal quality.
  • Power, communications and security: each station needs dependable power, a maintainable communications path and protection against animals, vandalism and unauthorized changes.
  • Soiling patterns: dust deposition can differ across a site; a soiling sensor or reference device is useful when cleaning decisions or performance guarantees depend on it.

NREL advises considering terrain, climate variability, power, communications, security, dust and electromagnetic interference when selecting locations. Document why each station represents its assigned field and record any later relocation or obstruction.

Essential versus optional sensors

Measurement Why it is used Typical status
Production meter Revenue, settlement, energy accounting and independent cross-check of plant output Essential
Inverter electrical telemetry Availability, alarms, operating limits and fault isolation Essential
Irradiance Expected-power calculation and performance-ratio analysis Essential
Module temperature Temperature correction and detection of abnormal thermal behavior Essential
Ambient temperature Weather context and equipment operating analysis Essential
Wind speed and direction Forecasting, structural context and weather correlation Add when the use case requires it
Humidity and precipitation Weather correlation, condensation or rain-event analysis Add when warranted by climate or reporting
Soiling measurement Cleaning triggers, loss attribution and contractual performance analysis Add when soiling is material or must be quantified

A handheld solar irradiance meter can be useful for spot-checking a fixed sensor during troubleshooting. It is a supplemental check, not a replacement for calibrated, time-synchronized instrumentation and utility-scale data logging.

What maintenance do monitoring sensors require?

Monitoring maintenance is both physical and informational. A clean, calibrated sensor that sends implausible values is still a failed measurement, while perfect data cannot help if the logger’s clock is wrong or the backup cannot be restored.

Preventive maintenance work

Work area Actions Evidence to retain
Calibration Calibrate meters, radiometers and temperature instruments according to the applicable IEC class, manufacturer instructions and the plant calibration plan. Certificates, reference standards, dates, uncertainty and next due date
Sensor and enclosure service Clean irradiance and soiling surfaces, inspect temperature attachments, tighten or replace connectors, check seals, cable glands, grounding and surge protection. Inspection findings, photos, parts replaced and weather conditions
Data-quality checks Look for missing intervals, flat lines, impossible ranges, sudden offsets, time drift and disagreement between redundant channels or meters. Alarm history, quality flags, diagnostic results and corrective action
Logger and communications Verify local storage, clock synchronization, modem or radio health, queue recovery after outages and secure configuration. Connectivity tests, firmware/configuration records and outage durations
Backup and recovery Back up to cloud storage, restrict access and perform restoration tests so operators know how to recover historical data. Backup status, restore-test result and retention policy
Corrective work Replace failed sensors, repair wiring, investigate abnormal production and close the event only after values return to credible ranges. Work order, root cause, replacement serial number and verification data

Set inspection and calibration intervals in the O&M plan rather than assuming one interval fits every climate or instrument. Increase attention after lightning, flooding, construction, sensor relocation, unusual drift or a long communications outage. Connected inverters can support remote testing, software updates and resets, but remote access should complement—not replace—safe field inspection.

How to compare monitoring-system options

Price and a polished dashboard do not establish that a system is suitable. Compare the following items in the same evaluation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Monitoring class and accuracy: confirm the IEC 61724-1:2021 class, irradiance accuracy, meter accuracy and how uncertainty is reported.
  • Spatial coverage: check station count, placement method and how the platform handles multiple fields, trackers or orientations.
  • Data ownership and retention: require exportable raw and aggregated data, six months of local buffering where appropriate, cloud backup and a tested restore process.
  • Interoperability: prefer open standards, documented interfaces and the ability for more than one qualified service provider to maintain the system.
  • Cybersecurity: review authentication, encryption, network segmentation, logging, patching and third-party access controls.
  • Alert quality: distinguish actionable faults from communication noise, show the affected asset and preserve the event timeline.
  • Maintainability: verify calibration access, spare parts, replaceable communications hardware, audit trails and a clear O&M escalation path.

NREL specifically emphasizes open standards, maintainability by multiple service providers, auditability, third-party access and operational continuity. These characteristics reduce the risk of being locked into a platform that cannot be serviced when ownership or contractors change.

What does solar monitoring cost?

Monitoring cost depends on plant size, accuracy class, station count, communications, retention, cybersecurity and the level of analysis included. DOE gives the following indicative platform figures; they are not universal quotations and do not represent the full cost of sensors, installation, network service, calibration or O&M labor.

System example Indicative annual platform cost Qualification
Systems up to about 100 kW $0–$100 per year DOE indication for basic monitoring platforms; actual service and hardware costs vary.
100 MW utility-scale plant Approximately $50,000 per year DOE indication for detailed monitoring and sophisticated analysis, not a universal subscription price.

DOE guidance references monitoring platforms over performance periods of more than 25 years. Lifecycle budgeting should therefore include replacements, calibration, communications subscriptions, cybersecurity work and data migration—not only the first-year dashboard fee. A commonly used DOE lifecycle assumption is approximately 0.5% annual module degradation; monitoring helps distinguish that gradual trend from sudden sensor bias, soiling or equipment failure, but it does not guarantee that every plant will degrade at that rate.

Common failure scenarios and fixes

The dashboard shows no data after a storm

  1. Check whether the plant still has auxiliary power and whether the logger is recording locally.
  2. Inspect the modem, antenna, surge protection and network status without bypassing electrical-safety procedures.
  3. Confirm that queued records are forwarding after the link returns; look for clock drift or duplicate timestamps.
  4. Escalate a field visit if the logger, power supply or antenna is damaged, and document the missing interval in the performance record.

One irradiance sensor disagrees with the others

  1. Compare timestamps, quality flags, orientation and shading at each station.
  2. Inspect the sensor dome, reference cell or soiling surface, cable and enclosure.
  3. Use a calibrated handheld irradiance meter for a controlled spot check, recording the conditions and instrument uncertainty.
  4. Recalibrate or replace the sensor if the offset persists, then annotate affected performance calculations rather than silently rewriting history.

Production is low but all inverters appear healthy

  1. Compare measured irradiance and module temperature with neighboring stations and expected weather.
  2. Check for soiling, snow, tracker-position errors, curtailment commands and meter scaling.
  3. Review the interval at hourly and daily resolution to separate a weather event from a persistent loss.
  4. Open corrective work only after verifying that the reference sensors themselves are credible.

Implementation checklist

  1. Define the performance, contractual, forecasting and maintenance questions the system must answer.
  2. Map the plant into electrical and meteorological measurement zones; apply IEC 61724-1:2021 requirements to class, accuracy and radiometer count.
  3. Create the tag list, sampling intervals, quality flags, reports and retention policy.
  4. Select backhaul after an on-site survey and document storm, outage, cybersecurity and service-access assumptions.
  5. Specify six months of local logger storage where applicable, cloud backup and a tested restoration procedure.
  6. Install and commission sensors with calibration records, time synchronization and location photographs.
  7. Set alarms for missing, stale, implausible and drifting values as well as equipment faults.
  8. Integrate alerts and work orders with the O&M process; assign who investigates, who can approve remote changes and who performs field repairs.
  9. Review data quality and sensor calibration on the planned schedule, and revise station placement or intervals when the plant changes.

A monitoring system is successful when operators can trust its measurements during normal production and during an outage, weather event or warranty dispute. Designing the data path, sensor coverage and maintenance evidence together produces that trust; a dashboard alone does not.
