The safest starting point for solar-eclipse photography is to calibrate your camera on the uneclipsed Sun with the exact front-mounted solar filter you will use. NASA’s practical test range is f/8–f/16 with shutter speeds from 1/1000 to 1/4 second for partial phases. During totality of a total eclipse—and only while the bright photosphere is completely covered—remove the filter and bracket roughly 1/1000 second to 1 second to record the corona. Use manual focus, keep ISO fixed while bracketing, and rehearse the entire sequence before eclipse day.

Choose settings by eclipse phase

There is no single “solar eclipse setting.” The Sun’s brightness changes dramatically between a partial phase, totality and an annular eclipse, and the filter’s optical density and your camera’s ISO change the exposure again. Use the following as a planning framework, then verify the result with your own camera, lens and filter.

Phase Filter Starting exposure guidance Key operating rule
Partial phase of any eclipse Purpose-built solar filter secured over the front of the lens Test f/8–f/16 and 1/1000–1/4 second on the uneclipsed Sun (NASA, 2024) Keep the filter on whenever any bright solar surface is visible
Totality of a total solar eclipse Remove only after the Moon completely covers the bright photosphere Bracket approximately 1/1000 second to 1 second with the aperture fixed (NASA, 2024) Replace the filter immediately when the photosphere reappears
Annular eclipse Filter remains fitted for the entire event Use your calibrated partial-phase exposure and bracket as needed There is no safe filter-free interval because the bright ring remains visible

These ranges are starting points, not guaranteed settings. A filter that transmits more or less light, a different ISO, haze, altitude and the camera’s metering can all change the result.

Safety: protect your eyes and your camera

NASA’s current safety guidance requires a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of camera optics whenever any bright part of the Sun is visible. The filter must be designed for optical use and fit the lens or telescope securely; a loose sheet can admit concentrated sunlight around the edges or fall off while you are operating the camera.

  • Do not place eclipse glasses over a camera lens. They are made for direct viewing by the eyes, not for concentrated light entering optical equipment.
  • Do not look through a camera’s optical viewfinder at the Sun unless the correctly fitted solar filter is in place. Live view or an electronic display does not eliminate the need for the front filter.
  • Never look through binoculars, a spotting scope or a telescope while wearing handheld eclipse glasses. Concentrated sunlight can burn through the glasses and cause severe eye injury.
  • For direct viewing outside totality, use certified eye protection intended for solar observation. During totality, direct viewing is safe only while the bright photosphere is completely hidden; put eye protection back on before the first bright bead or crescent appears.

Fred Espenak’s NASA eclipse-photography guidance states: “A certified solar filter must be used on the lens throughout the partial phases for both photography and safe viewing.”

Partial-phase exposure: calibrate before the eclipse

Partial phases include the uneclipsed Sun before contact, the shrinking and growing crescents, and every moment of an annular eclipse. Exposure should be established with the actual filter and camera rather than copied from a chart.

Use NASA’s test range as a controlled starting point

Set the aperture manually somewhere between f/8 and f/16. At a fixed ISO, make a series of test frames from about 1/1000 second through 1/4 second. NASA published this range in 2024 as practical guidance for testing the uneclipsed Sun. The slower end may overexpose with a relatively bright filter, while the faster end may be too dark with a denser filter; the point is to discover the usable portion of the range.

Evaluate the files, not just the meter

Inspect the test images at high magnification and check the camera histogram. A centered histogram is not a universal target for a solar disk: the surrounding frame may be almost black, so the Sun can occupy only a small portion of the graph. Look for a disk with preserved edge detail and no clipped highlight warning. Confirm the result on the camera you will actually use, because display rendering and metering behavior vary by model.

Lock the variables that make a bracket meaningful

  1. Choose a low practical ISO that gives your camera adequate dynamic range and low noise.
  2. Set the aperture manually between f/8 and f/16.
  3. Keep ISO and aperture fixed while comparing shutter speeds.
  4. Record which shutter speed preserves the solar edge and surface detail with your filter.
  5. Make a second test if the filter, lens, camera body or weather conditions change.

Do not treat the historical ISO 50–100 recommendation as a universal digital-camera rule. Espenak’s NASA guidance made that recommendation for low- to medium-speed film in 1996. Digital sensors differ, so use the film figure only as historical context and validate your own low-ISO choice by testing.

What ISO should you use for a solar eclipse?

Start with the lowest ISO that still permits a practical shutter speed and preserves the camera’s exposure latitude. For many cameras that means a base or near-base ISO, but the reviewed NASA guidance does not establish one optimal digital ISO for every model. A lower ISO reduces noise and protects highlight detail; raising it can be useful if a dense filter, a small aperture or a fast shutter leaves the image too dark.

Keep ISO unchanged during a shutter-speed bracket. Changing ISO and shutter speed together makes it impossible to tell which variable produced the improvement and can cause accidental overexposure as the Sun’s appearance changes. If you change ISO for a different phase, make a fresh test and write the new setting down.

What shutter speed for eclipse photography?

Partial and annular phases

Use the calibrated range from your uneclipsed-Sun test. NASA’s 2024 example spans 1/1000 to 1/4 second, but the correct choice depends on filter attenuation, ISO and conditions. Fast shutter speeds help freeze vibration and atmospheric shimmer; slower speeds can reveal detail when the filter is very dark or the aperture is stopped down. Make several frames at adjacent shutter speeds if the camera and tracking setup allow it.

Totality in a total eclipse

The corona is far dimmer than the photosphere, so the partial-phase filter blocks too much light during totality. Once the bright face is completely covered, remove the filter and keep the aperture fixed. Bracket broadly—NASA gives approximately 1/1000 second to 1 second as an example—to record the bright inner corona, fainter outer streamers and the changing diamond-ring or chromosphere details.

Totality is brief. A pre-programmed interval plan, custom mode or timer can help you work through the bracket without repeatedly searching menus. Practice the exact sequence with the camera powered, lens mounted and filter fitted. The instant a bright photospheric bead or crescent returns, stop the filter-free sequence and reinstall the filter.

How to focus on the Sun for an eclipse

Use manual focus. NASA-hosted technical guidance cautions that autofocus is unreliable in these conditions because the filtered Sun is a small, high-contrast target and the surrounding sky provides little useful detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Mount the filter and point the camera safely at the Sun.
  2. Use live view or the electronic display to magnify the solar edge or a sunspot if one is visible.
  3. Turn autofocus off after achieving the sharpest edge.
  4. Check sharpness at the display’s highest useful magnification, then avoid touching the focus ring.
  5. Mark or tape the focus position so it cannot be moved accidentally while changing shutter speed or removing and replacing the filter during totality.

There is no single focus distance or live-view procedure that works for every lens and camera combination. Rehearse with the actual equipment, and check focus again if you change lenses or if the lens has a focus-by-wire ring that can shift when the camera is handled.

Lens choice, image scale and framing

A camera with manual exposure and focus controls is sufficient; expensive specialist equipment is not mandatory. Longer focal lengths enlarge the solar disk but make tracking, finding the Sun and keeping it framed more demanding.

Lens example Optical example from NASA’s 35 mm-format discussion Practical implication
200 mm Approximately 1.9 mm solar image Easier to locate and track; the disk occupies less of the frame
500 mm Approximately 4.6 mm solar image Larger disk detail, but tighter framing and more demanding tracking

Those dimensions are optical examples for a 35 mm format, not guarantees for every sensor. Crop sensors, pixel counts and aspect ratios alter the final framing. A wide or normal lens can intentionally include the landscape, horizon and changing daylight rather than trying to fill the frame with a tiny disk. Decide before the event whether your priority is close-up solar detail, a landscape composition or a sequence showing the changing light.

A tripod can reduce movement, particularly with a long lens. A delayed shutter release or remote trigger helps prevent vibration, but a stable, rehearsed setup matters more than any particular accessory. Image stabilization may be useful for a handheld or moving setup; on a firmly locked tripod, follow the lens manufacturer’s guidance about whether to disable it.

A complete pre-eclipse rehearsal

  1. Fit and inspect the filter. Confirm that it is made for solar imaging, matches the lens diameter or adapter, covers the entire front opening and cannot be knocked loose.
  2. Practice finding the Sun. With the filter fitted, locate and center the Sun at the focal length you plan to use. Do not use an unfiltered optical finder.
  3. Calibrate exposure. Run the f/8–f/16 and 1/1000–1/4-second test range at your chosen ISO, inspect the files and write down a usable bracket.
  4. Set manual focus. Magnify the edge, focus carefully, switch autofocus off and mark the ring.
  5. Program the sequence. Prepare a partial-phase interval plan and a separate totality bracket if you are observing a total eclipse. Include enough time to stop, refit the filter and resume safe viewing.
  6. Check power and storage. Charge batteries, clear memory cards and disable settings that could interrupt a rapid sequence, such as an unexpectedly short sleep timer.
  7. Rehearse under a timer. Run the entire operation, including filter removal and replacement, so the motions are automatic rather than improvised during the short total phase.

Troubleshooting common failures

The Sun is a featureless white disk

The exposure is too bright or the filter transmits more light than expected. Use a faster shutter, a smaller aperture within the f/8–f/16 test range, or a lower ISO, then retest. Do not rely on the meter alone; inspect highlight warnings and edge detail.

The solar disk is too dark

Use a slower shutter within the tested range, open the aperture toward f/8 or raise ISO modestly. Recheck that the filter is the intended solar-imaging type and that no additional neutral-density or polarizing filter is blocking light.

Images are soft

Confirm manual focus at high display magnification, make sure the filter is flat and secure, and reduce vibration with a tripod or delayed/remote release. Atmospheric turbulence can limit detail even when focus is correct.

The Sun drifts out of frame

Long focal lengths magnify tracking errors. Rehearse a wider framing, use a properly aligned tracking mount if available, or shorten the focal length. Do not spend totality searching through menus or repeatedly losing the target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The totality sequence is overexposed

Reinstall the filter immediately if any bright photosphere is visible. For the next safe totality interval, use the fixed aperture and begin the bracket at a faster shutter speed, expanding toward slower exposures only while the bright face remains fully covered.

Phase-specific checklist

  • Before first contact: filter secured, manual focus confirmed, partial-phase exposure bracket ready, battery and storage checked.
  • During every partial phase: keep the filter on the front of the lens; use the calibrated ISO, aperture and shutter range.
  • At second contact of a total eclipse: remove the filter only after the photosphere is completely covered; run the rehearsed shutter-speed bracket.
  • At third contact: stop the unfiltered sequence and replace the filter before the bright photosphere reappears.
  • For an annular eclipse: never remove the filter; the bright annular ring means there is no totality interval.
