Use a policy allocation, not a single answer. Keep cash and unstaked SOL for payroll, taxes, vendors, debt service, collateral calls and any other obligation that may come due before a staking position can be exited safely. Use native SOL staking for a long-horizon reserve when simplicity and direct network participation matter most. Use liquid staking only for the portion that benefits from transferability or DeFi composability and can tolerate smart-contract, liquidity, governance and provider-concentration risk.

The right mix depends on your liquidity horizon, tolerance for SOL price volatility, custody model, accounting and tax treatment, and ability to monitor protocols. There is no universally safe liquid-staking percentage or dependable fixed APY: Solana rewards change with inflation, active stake, validator uptime, commissions, MEV and market conditions.

What the three treasury choices actually are

Cash and unstaked SOL

Cash and unencumbered, unstaked SOL form the reserve sleeve. They do not earn Solana staking rewards, but they can be used without waiting for a staking workflow, a pool redemption, a market buyer or a protocol to operate normally. This is the sleeve for obligations with a known date or a high cost of delay: payroll, tax payments, vendors, debt service, collateral calls, operating expenses and emergency liquidity.

“Cash” should be defined in your policy. It may mean bank cash or another approved cash equivalent, while unstaked SOL remains exposed to SOL price movements even though it is immediately transferable. If an obligation is denominated in dollars, holding SOL does not remove the need to manage that price risk.

Native SOL staking

Native staking delegates SOL to validators through Solana’s protocol. Solana describes staking as helping secure the network while earning rewards. Delegation is a shared-risk, shared-reward arrangement: realized returns depend on validator commission and uptime, the amount of SOL staked across the network and the network’s inflation schedule.

Solana’s staking FAQ lists 8% initial annual inflation, a 15% year-over-year inflation decrease and a 1.5% long-term annual inflation rate. These are protocol parameters described by Solana, not a promised treasury yield. Rewards are issued once per epoch, approximately every two days, so the amount credited can vary from epoch to epoch.

Solana also states that there is currently no in-protocol implementation of slashing. That does not make staking risk-free: SOL can lose market value, a validator can underperform, custody keys can be compromised, and an unstaking process can be inconvenient when liquidity is needed quickly.

Liquid staking

A Solana stake pool accepts SOL and issues an SPL staking derivative representing a claim on the pooled position. The derivative can generally be transferred or used in other Solana applications while the underlying position earns staking rewards. This creates utility that native delegated SOL does not provide, but it adds another layer of protocol, market and governance risk.

Marinade offers both native staking and mSOL. Its materials describe delegation across more than 100 high-performing validators and distinguish native Marinade staking, which does not issue mSOL or require smart-contract interaction, from liquid staking, which does issue mSOL for DeFi use. JitoSOL combines staking rewards with MEV rewards. Jito’s documentation describes JitoSOL as non-custodial, usable in DeFi and built on Solana’s stake-pool program; it also reports completed audits. An audit is evidence about a review at a point in time, not a guarantee against future bugs, governance actions, oracle failures or market losses.

How the options compare

Dimension Cash or unstaked SOL Native staking Liquid staking
Primary purpose Meet near-term obligations and preserve optionality Earn protocol staking rewards on a long-horizon reserve Earn staking-related rewards while retaining a transferable token
Liquidity mechanics Direct use or transfer, subject to banking and custody arrangements Requires an unstaking process before the stake is freely available; timing and procedures must be documented Transfer or sell the derivative, or redeem through the pool when available; market depth and pool conditions matter
Reward source None from Solana staking Protocol inflation and staking rewards, net of validator commission and performance effects Underlying staking rewards plus, for some products, additional sources such as MEV; net results vary by product and market
Additional risks Inflation and opportunity cost; unstaked SOL still has SOL price exposure Validator selection, commission, uptime, custody and exit liquidity All native-staking risks plus smart-contract, governance, liquidity, derivative-price and provider-concentration risks
Operational complexity Lowest if custody and payment controls already exist Moderate: delegation, validator monitoring and unstaking procedures Highest: token accounting, protocol monitoring, redemption or trading controls and DeFi exposure management
Best fit Known obligations, emergency reserve and collateral that may be called Funds unlikely to be needed during the policy horizon A limited sleeve where transferability or DeFi utility has measurable value

Start with the liquidity horizon

The first question is not “Which token has the highest yield?” It is “When could this SOL be needed, and how certain must access be?” Divide the treasury into explicit horizons rather than applying one treatment to the entire balance.

Immediate obligations

Match payroll, taxes, vendor invoices, debt service and expected collateral calls with cash or assets that can be used without relying on a staking exit or a liquid-staking market. If the obligation is in fiat, include the conversion and settlement time in the test. Unstaked SOL can be transferred quickly, but its dollar value can change before settlement.

Contingency reserve

Hold a separate reserve for plausible but unplanned needs: a sudden collateral call, a major vendor prepayment, an exchange or custodian outage, or a network or protocol incident. Set the reserve through a documented stress analysis, not a generic percentage. The analysis should state the largest likely cash outflow, the time required to liquidate each asset and the price haircut that remains acceptable during market stress.

Long-horizon reserve

Only the balance that can remain invested through an exit process and a period of market disruption should be considered for staking. Native staking is usually the simpler choice for this sleeve because it avoids an additional derivative token and its associated smart-contract and secondary-market dependencies.

Strategic or DeFi sleeve

Liquid staking belongs in a separately governed sleeve when the treasury has a defined reason to use the derivative—for example, collateral management, settlement flexibility or a specific DeFi workflow. If the only objective is staking yield, the added risks may not be justified.

A decision framework for treasury committees

Score each candidate allocation against the same eight questions. Record the answer, the responsible owner and the limit that triggers a review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Liquidity horizon: What is the earliest date the funds could be required, and what is the maximum acceptable exit time?
  2. Price exposure: Are obligations measured in SOL or in fiat? What SOL drawdown can the balance withstand without forcing a sale?
  3. Reward variability: Which components produce the return—protocol inflation, validator performance, commission or MEV—and which can change without notice?
  4. Protocol risk: What smart contracts, stake-pool programs, oracles and upgrade authorities must work for the position to retain value?
  5. Validator and provider concentration: How much exposure is acceptable to one validator, stake pool, liquid-staking token or governance group?
  6. Custody and governance: Who controls keys, approves delegations, can move assets, and responds to an incident?
  7. Accounting and tax treatment: How will the organization record the original SOL, staking rewards, derivative-token movements, valuation changes and disposals in its jurisdiction?
  8. Operational burden: Can the team monitor commissions, validator health, pool exchange rates, liquidity and protocol announcements every business day, with an escalation path?

A long-horizon reserve that scores well on simplicity and poorly on liquidity may fit native staking. A smaller position that needs transferability may fit a liquid token. A balance tied to a near-term obligation should remain cash or unstaked. The result should be a set of limits and permitted actions, not a one-time product selection.

Native staking in practice

What creates the return

Delegated SOL earns rewards according to the network’s inflation and staking mechanics, adjusted by validator commission and performance. Network-wide active stake affects the effective rate. Because rewards are credited per epoch, approximately every two days, a treasury should evaluate performance over a policy-defined period rather than infer an annual yield from one epoch.

Validator selection controls

Require documented criteria before delegation: commission, recent uptime, voting behavior, operational history, identity and custody arrangements. Set a maximum percentage per validator and a review trigger for commission changes or sustained underperformance. Diversification reduces dependence on one operator but does not remove SOL market risk.

Exit and custody procedures

Write the unstaking procedure before funds are delegated. It should specify who can request an exit, where the resulting SOL is sent, how long the process may take under normal conditions, and what happens if a payment is due during that window. Keep signing keys in the organization’s approved custody system, use role separation for initiation and approval, and rehearse recovery with a small test amount.

Liquid staking: mSOL, JitoSOL and the extra risk stack

mSOL and Marinade’s two paths

mSOL is Marinade’s liquid-staking token: the holder receives a transferable SPL token representing a pooled staking position. Marinade’s native staking path is different; it delegates SOL without issuing mSOL and avoids smart-contract interaction for the depositor. A treasury choosing between these paths should be able to explain why the transferability of mSOL is worth its additional dependencies.

JitoSOL and MEV rewards

JitoSOL represents a pooled staking position that also incorporates MEV rewards. Jito documents it as non-custodial, usable in DeFi and built on Solana’s stake-pool program, with completed audits. MEV can increase or change returns, but it is not a fixed supplement. The token remains exposed to validator selection, protocol implementation, governance decisions, market liquidity and the possibility that its trading price diverges from the economic value of the underlying SOL.

Why a liquid token can trade below its underlying value

In normal conditions, arbitrage and redemption mechanisms may keep a liquid-staking token near its underlying value. During a rush for liquidity, redemptions can be delayed or constrained, market makers can withdraw, and the token can trade at a discount. A treasury policy should therefore apply a haircut to the value recognized for urgent obligations and specify whether the organization may sell in the market, redeem through the pool, or wait for conditions to normalize.

Smart-contract and governance controls

List every contract and authority that can affect the position. Review audit scope and date, upgrade controls, emergency procedures, oracle dependencies, redemption limits and governance participation. “Audited” should never be treated as “guaranteed.” Keep liquid-staking assets outside the minimum operating reserve unless the committee has approved the corresponding failure scenarios.

How much SOL should remain liquid?

No defensible universal percentage follows from the available Solana staking data. Set the amount from obligations and stress assumptions:

  1. List obligations by currency, amount and due date for the policy horizon.
  2. Add a contingency amount for plausible shocks, including collateral calls and temporary access failures.
  3. Subtract reliable non-SOL inflows that are contractually expected during the same period.
  4. Value unstaked SOL conservatively in the obligation currency, using a haircut chosen by the treasury committee.
  5. Exclude any amount that would require a liquid-staking token to trade at its normal price or a redemption queue to remain open.
  6. Keep the resulting reserve in approved cash and unstaked assets, then review it whenever obligations, leverage, custody or market volatility changes.

The remainder is not automatically stakeable. First apply concentration caps, custody limits and a maximum liquid-staking allocation. A treasury may decide that all long-horizon SOL is natively staked, or that a small liquid-staking sleeve is useful; either choice should be justified by a specific operational need.

Concentration deserves its own limit

A Marinade Finance S-1/A filing reported that, as of July 2025, Lido, Marinade Finance and Jito together controlled approximately 93.5% of SOL staked. That figure is dated and should not be presented as a current market measurement without rechecking the filing and current network data. It nevertheless illustrates why a treasury should cap exposure to any one provider, stake pool or validator and monitor concentration over time.

Set limits at several levels: one validator, one liquid-staking token, one provider family and the total amount exposed to protocols with shared governance or infrastructure. Define what happens when a limit is breached—new deposits stop, assets are rebalanced, or the committee grants a time-limited exception.

Operating a staking treasury safely

Adopt a written policy

Specify permitted assets, minimum liquid reserve, maximum unstaking or redemption horizon, provider and validator caps, approved custody methods, authorized signers, valuation rules, incident contacts and reporting frequency. Include a prohibition on using the operating reserve as collateral for an unapproved DeFi position.

Separate duties

One person or team should propose a delegation or redemption; another should approve it; a third control should reconcile wallets, staking accounts and the general ledger. Record transaction IDs, validator or pool identifiers, exchange rates, fees and the policy authority for every movement.

Monitor the right signals

  • Validator commission, voting performance and uptime for native positions.
  • Epoch reward changes and network-wide active stake.
  • Liquid-token exchange rate, market depth, redemption status and any deviation from underlying value.
  • Protocol upgrades, governance proposals, audit findings and incident notices.
  • Custodian access, signer availability and reconciliation differences.
  • Reserve coverage against the next obligation date and the approved stress haircut.

Prepare incident playbooks

Document actions for a validator outage, suspected contract vulnerability, liquid-token discount, custodian lockout, key compromise and an urgent cash call. The playbook should identify who can pause new deposits, move unstaked funds, contact counterparties and notify the board or audit committee. Test the contact tree and recovery process periodically.

Accounting, tax and governance questions

Staking rewards and liquid-staking tokens can create different recognition, valuation and disposal events. The correct treatment depends on the organization’s accounting framework, jurisdiction, legal structure and transaction history. Before implementation, obtain advice from accountants and tax counsel who understand digital assets, then encode the approved treatment in the treasury policy and reporting chart of accounts.

Governance should also address mandate and fiduciary questions: who approved exposure to SOL volatility, whether a liquid token is an investment or an operational instrument, how conflicts of interest are handled, and what disclosures lenders, auditors or regulators require. A company can operate a Solana treasury, but the ability to do so responsibly depends on these controls rather than on the token format alone.

Illustrative allocation process

Consider a treasury with recurring monthly obligations, a separate emergency reserve and a balance that management does not expect to use for several years. The committee could place the obligation and emergency amounts in approved cash and unstaked SOL, delegate the genuinely long-horizon balance natively, and authorize a smaller liquid-staking sleeve only if a documented DeFi or transferability use case exists. The percentages would come from the committee’s cash-flow model and risk limits; they should not be copied from another company.

At each monthly review, compare projected obligations with the liquid reserve, check provider and validator caps, review liquid-token discounts and confirm that custody and accounting reconciliations agree. If the reserve falls below its floor, stop new staking and restore liquidity before pursuing additional yield.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Chasing an advertised APY

There is no single current APY established for all Solana staking choices. Rates vary by epoch, inflation, active stake, validator uptime, fees, MEV and market conditions. Use live official dashboards when making a decision, and record the date and assumptions behind any rate used in a model.

Treating unstaked SOL as cash

Unstaked SOL is liquid in a transfer sense but volatile in a fiat sense. Match fiat obligations with cash or apply a documented haircut and conversion plan.

Assuming liquid means risk-free

A transferable token can still trade below underlying value, face redemption constraints or depend on vulnerable contracts and governance. Apply separate liquidity and protocol limits.

Concentrating with one provider

Convenience can create correlated operational and governance exposure. Set provider and validator caps, then rebalance when limits are exceeded.

Ignoring the exit path

Before delegating, document the exact unstaking or redemption route, approvals, expected timing, destination wallet and fallback if the normal route is unavailable.

Bottom line for a treasury committee

Keep the amount required for near-term and stressed obligations in cash or unstaked SOL. Use native staking for the long-horizon reserve when the organization values simple, direct delegation and can tolerate SOL price and exit risk. Add liquid staking only where the transferable token or DeFi utility has a measurable purpose, and cap it for smart-contract, liquidity, governance and concentration risks. Revisit the allocation as obligations, market conditions, provider concentration and protocol behavior change.
