Solana DeFi lending and liquidity providing pay you for different economic risks. Lending generally earns interest from borrowers, while a liquidity-provider (LP) position can earn trading fees and incentives. Lending exposes you to protocol, asset, utilization, and withdrawal-liquidity risk. LPing adds relative-price exposure: your pool share can underperform simply holding the deposited tokens, a result commonly called impermanent loss. Neither strategy has a permanent return advantage, and no headline APY is meaningful without the same assets, venue, time period, fees, incentives, and loss scenarios.

This guide explains how each position works on Solana, where money is made or lost, what to check before depositing, and which approach may fit different objectives. It does not provide individualized financial advice.

What you are actually choosing

The words “lending” and “liquidity providing” describe two different jobs for your tokens. In a lending market, you supply an asset so other users can borrow it. Their interest payments are the primary source of your variable yield. In an automated market maker (AMM) pool, you deposit trading inventory so swaps can execute; traders pay fees, and a protocol or third party may add incentives.

Your wallet balance can rise in either strategy while the economic value of the position falls. Interest, fees, and incentives are only one side of the result. Token prices, withdrawal conditions, smart-contract events, and user actions determine the other side.

Lending: supplying capital to borrowers

A lending protocol records supplied assets in a market. Those assets become available for borrowing, subject to the market’s rules. Borrowers pay an interest rate that normally changes with utilization: when a larger share of available liquidity is borrowed, the rate can rise to attract additional supply and discourage further borrowing. A portion of interest may be retained as a protocol fee rather than paid to suppliers. The exact rate model, reserve policy, and fee treatment are protocol-specific.

Marginfi’s lending and borrowing documentation describes this supply-and-borrow relationship. Treat its mechanics as an example of a Solana lending market, not as a promise that every market uses identical parameters.

A supplier who never borrows is not automatically in a liquidation position. Liquidation is principally the borrower’s problem: if pledged collateral falls below a protocol’s risk threshold, the protocol can sell collateral or otherwise close the debt, usually with a penalty. A supplier still faces losses from a failing program, a bad debt event, an asset-price decline, or an inability to withdraw when most liquidity is borrowed.

Liquidity providing: supplying trading inventory

An LP deposits one or more assets into a pool used to quote swaps. In a traditional constant-product pool, the quantities of the assets change as traders buy one asset and sell the other. Your share therefore changes composition even if you never touch the position. Trading fees are distributed according to the venue’s rules; some pools also pay temporary token incentives.

The key comparison is against holding the same tokens outside the pool. If the two token prices move relative to one another, the AMM’s rebalancing can leave your pool share worth less than that simple hold strategy. The shortfall is called impermanent loss while the position remains open. Fees and incentives can exceed that shortfall, but they can also be too small, end, or be offset by transaction and withdrawal costs.

Solana’s official Introduction to DeFi on Solana identifies smart-contract, market, and user-error risks and asks, “Can I lose money in DeFi?” Its concise warning is worth retaining: “Higher yields often mean higher risks.”

Decision axis Lending or supplying Liquidity providing
Primary return engine Interest paid by borrowers, less applicable fees; the rate responds to supply and borrowing demand. Trading fees and possibly incentives; income varies with volume, fee tier, program terms, and your pool share.
Distinctive loss pathway Suppliers face protocol failure, asset-price exposure, bad debt, and withdrawal-liquidity risk. Borrower liquidation applies to a borrower’s collateral position, not automatically to an unborrowed supply position. Relative-price movement can make the LP position worth less than holding the contributed tokens. Pool, contract, asset, and withdrawal risks also remain.
Liquidity to inspect Unborrowed liquidity, concentration of deposits, concentration of borrowing, reserve policy, and withdrawal rules. Pool depth, trading activity, fee history, incentive dependence, withdrawal mechanics, and any selected price range.
Variables to compare Asset-specific supply rate, borrow rate, utilization, reserve or protocol fee, collateral rules if you also borrow, and redemption conditions. Fee tier, volume, incentives, token correlation and volatility, pool composition, price range, rebalancing needs, and LP-versus-hold outcomes.
Typical operational burden Monitor utilization, rate changes, asset risk, protocol announcements, and whether withdrawals remain available. Monitor price range, pool volume, fee generation, incentives, inventory drift, and whether the position has moved out of range.
Possible fit Someone seeking interest exposure and accepting lending-market and asset risks. Someone willing to supply trading inventory and accept relative-price exposure for variable fees and possible incentives.

These categories are not rankings. A low-volatility lending market can still suffer a contract failure, and a busy pool can still produce a poor net result after impermanent loss.

How returns are generated—and why APY is easy to misread

Lending yield follows demand for borrowing

A displayed supply APY is a snapshot of a rate model, not a guaranteed coupon. When borrowers repay, new borrowers arrive, or deposits change, utilization changes and the rate can move. A market with a high rate may be signaling scarce available liquidity or unusually strong borrowing demand. That can make withdrawing harder at the very moment you want to exit.

Check whether the quoted figure is an annualized estimate, whether it includes protocol incentives, and whether incentives are paid in a volatile token. Separate the base interest rate from rewards. A reward token can lose value even while its token-denominated APY remains unchanged. Also identify any reserve factor or other fee that reduces the amount credited to suppliers.

LP yield combines fees, incentives, and token performance

Fee income depends on actual swap volume, your share of the active liquidity, and the pool’s fee schedule. Incentives depend on a program’s funding and duration. Neither source is fixed. If a pool pays rewards for a limited campaign, the quoted annualized number assumes continuation that may not occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Token-price movement changes the position independently of fee income. If one token rallies relative to the other, the pool generally holds more of the declining token and less of the rising token. If prices later return to their starting relationship, the impermanent component can reverse; if they do not, it is realized when you withdraw. A fee-rich pool can still underperform a passive hold, while a low-fee pool can outperform during a period of stable prices and sustained volume.

What the available evidence can and cannot establish

There is no source-backed, matched current comparison that ranks Solana lending against LPing for the same assets, venues, and dates. The Solana educational material includes an illustrative APY example, but it is hypothetical and should not be presented as an observed Solana yield. Do not turn an interface’s current number, a historical return, or an incentive schedule into a forecast.

For a fair comparison, record the same starting value, asset exposure, measurement period, deposits and withdrawals, transaction costs, interest or fees, incentive-token sales, and the value of assets at exit. Compare the lending position with a like-for-like hold of the supplied asset, and compare the LP position with holding the exact tokens in the contributed proportions. Without those controls, “higher APY” may simply describe a different risk.

Risk map for lending and supplying

Smart-contract and protocol failure

DeFi positions are controlled by programs. A bug, an economic exploit, an oracle failure, an upgrade mistake, or a governance decision can interrupt withdrawals or create losses. An audit, a long operating history, or a large total value locked does not guarantee safety. Solana’s educational material explicitly lists bugs and protocol failure among DeFi risks; read the protocol’s current documentation and incident disclosures rather than treating maturity as insurance.

Asset and market risk

Supplying a token does not remove its price risk. If the token falls against the currency in which you measure wealth, the position can lose value even when the token balance increases through interest. Wrapped, bridged, or synthetic assets add their own issuer, bridge, or backing assumptions. Evaluate the asset separately from the lending market.

Borrower liquidation and bad debt

If you borrow against collateral, a fall in collateral value can breach the protocol’s health threshold. The protocol may liquidate part or all of the position and apply a penalty. Save Finance explains this mechanism and related risks in its risk documentation. A person who only supplies assets is not automatically liquidated because another user’s collateral falls, but suppliers can be affected if liquidations fail to cover debt or if a market accumulates bad debt.

Withdrawal and concentration risk

A supply balance is not the same as immediately available cash. If most supplied assets are borrowed, only the unborrowed reserve may be withdrawable. Check the available-liquidity figure, the share controlled by the largest suppliers, and whether withdrawals are queued, capped, or subject to an emergency mode. A market that looks attractive at deposit time may be difficult to exit during a borrowing surge.

Rate and incentive changes

Utilization curves, reserve factors, governance votes, and reward schedules can change. Record the terms that applied when you entered and monitor official notices. Do not assume that a rate shown today will persist for a week, let alone a year.

Risk map for liquidity providers

Impermanent loss versus holding

Impermanent loss is a relative-price effect, not a statement that every LP position loses money. It describes how the pool position compares with holding the deposited assets outside the pool. The larger the price divergence, the larger the potential difference in a basic two-asset pool. Fees and incentives reduce the gap only if their value exceeds it.

Use a simple before-and-after ledger: record each token’s quantity and market value at deposit, every fee or reward received, each reward sale or reinvestment, and the quantities and prices at withdrawal. Compare the resulting value with the value of keeping the original token quantities. This makes the trade-off visible instead of relying on an APY label.

Pool and smart-contract risk

An LP position depends on the pool program, its pricing logic, any oracle or routing components, and the tokens themselves. A bug or exploit can affect pooled assets. A thin pool can experience large price impact or become difficult to exit. Incentives can attract temporary capital that leaves when rewards decline, reducing fee income and depth.

Concentrated liquidity and range management

Some Solana venues let LPs choose a price range rather than providing liquidity across the entire curve. A narrower range can make capital active at selected prices, but it also requires more monitoring: when the market leaves the range, some or all liquidity may stop earning swap fees and become concentrated in one asset. Repositioning creates transaction costs and can realize a different exposure.

Solana’s developer page lists Orca Whirlpools and Raydium as examples of pool and concentrated-liquidity venues: Build DeFi on Solana. The available documentation does not establish a universal return or safety advantage for any range, venue, or pool. Kamino describes a Solana concentrated-liquidity layer and liquidity vaults that can earn fees and rewards at its liquidity page; those descriptions are product-category examples, not guarantees of present yield.

Operational and user-error risk

Approving the wrong token, entering an incorrect amount, choosing an unsuitable range, signing a malicious transaction, or losing wallet recovery access can create an irreversible loss. Confirm the domain, program, token mint, transaction simulation, and destination account before signing. Keep a separate record of positions, ranges, reward claims, and withdrawal instructions.

A due-diligence process for a Solana lending position

Use this sequence before supplying funds. It is designed to expose a rate that looks attractive but cannot meet your liquidity or risk requirements.

  1. Define the exposure. Write down the exact token, the currency in which you measure results, the intended holding period, and whether you will also borrow. A “stable” token is still an asset with issuer, depeg, and smart-contract risk.
  2. Read the market parameters. Identify the interest-rate curve, current utilization, reserve or protocol fee, collateral factors, liquidation thresholds, liquidation penalties, and any caps. Marginfi’s documentation at its lending overview illustrates the kinds of mechanics to locate.
  3. Check withdrawal liquidity. Compare your proposed deposit with unborrowed liquidity and the largest existing deposits. Ask what happens if borrowing rises sharply and whether withdrawals can be delayed or limited.
  4. Separate base interest from rewards. Record the supply rate, reward token, emission schedule, vesting or claim rules, and all fees. Value rewards in your measurement currency rather than assuming token units equal cash value.
  5. Review failure assumptions. Find the program addresses, audit disclosures, upgrade authority, oracle dependencies, emergency controls, and incident history. None is a guarantee; the purpose is to understand what can fail and who can change the rules.
  6. Start with an exit test. Deposit a small amount, verify that the correct market credited your wallet, and withdraw before committing the amount you can least afford to lock. Note transaction fees and the time required.
  7. Set monitoring triggers. Decide in advance what utilization, rate, asset price, protocol announcement, or withdrawal-availability change will make you reduce or close the position. A rule is easier to follow than a decision made during a market shock.

A due-diligence process for a Solana LP position

  1. Identify the pool design. Determine whether it is a broad-range AMM or concentrated liquidity, the two assets, fee tier, tick or range rules, and whether your position is represented by a transferable receipt or a managed vault share.
  2. Measure the assets together. Check correlation, volatility, token liquidity, supply events, and depeg or issuer risks. Two assets that usually move together can still diverge during a stressed market.
  3. Inspect real activity. Look at recent volume, fee generation, pool depth, price impact, and the portion of liquidity currently active in your selected range. A high annualized fee number based on a short burst of volume is not a stable expectation.
  4. Model the hold comparison. Calculate the value of holding the exact starting token amounts. Then model several relative-price outcomes and add fees, incentives, claims, sales, and transaction costs. Label the result as a scenario, not a forecast.
  5. Read incentive conditions. Record the reward token, emissions end date, eligibility, claim cost, lockups, and governance ability to change terms. Recalculate net income if incentives disappear.
  6. Choose a range you can manage. A narrow range may use capital efficiently but can leave the position inactive after a modest price move. Include the time and cost of rebalancing in your decision.
  7. Verify the transaction path. Confirm the pool address, token mints, slippage limit, approvals, and expected post-transaction balances. Review every wallet prompt and reject unexpected program calls.
  8. Define an exit. Decide when you will remove liquidity, how you will handle an out-of-range position, and whether the pool has enough depth for your intended withdrawal. Test a small withdrawal first.

When lending may fit better

Lending may fit a person who wants exposure to interest paid by borrowers rather than running a trading inventory. It is easier to reason about the return engine when you supply one asset and do not need to manage a price range. That simplicity does not remove protocol, token, utilization, or withdrawal risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It may also fit someone whose priority is a predictable operational routine: check the rate and utilization, verify that liquidity remains available, and withdraw when the position no longer meets the plan. “Predictable” here refers to the monitoring task, not to a fixed return. Rates remain variable, and the token’s market value can move.

If you intend to borrow as well as supply, treat that as a separate leveraged strategy. Collateral thresholds, liquidation penalties, and debt-rate changes become central, and a lender-only comparison no longer describes your risk.

When LPing may fit better

LPing may fit a person willing to hold two trading assets and accept that their mix will change as traders swap. The potential compensation is fee income, with possible incentives, in exchange for inventory and relative-price exposure. It can be appropriate when you understand the pool’s assets, expect sufficient trading activity, and can monitor a range or tolerate broad AMM exposure.

It is a poor fit if you need a fixed token quantity, cannot monitor an out-of-range concentrated position, or would be forced to sell during a sharp divergence. In those cases, the comparison with simply holding the assets is more important than the displayed fee APY.

Solana examples without treating them as endorsements

Solana’s developer documentation groups Orca Whirlpools and Raydium under pool creation and concentrated-liquidity examples and lists Kamino under lending and borrowing. Kamino’s own description spans lending, liquidity, and leverage and says its liquidity vaults can earn fees and rewards. These references show the range of product categories available on Solana; they do not establish current rates, security, profitability, or suitability.

Before using any named venue, open its current documentation from an independently verified domain, confirm the program addresses in the official interface, and read withdrawal and emergency procedures. A familiar name is not a substitute for checking the specific pool or market you plan to use.

A practical monitoring checklist

  • Every transaction: verify wallet network, program address, token mint, amount, slippage, and expected balance change.
  • For lending: record supply APY, utilization, unborrowed liquidity, reserve factor, reward emissions, and any governance or parameter change.
  • For LPing: record pool volume, fees earned, active range, token quantities, relative price, incentive balance, and the value of holding the original tokens.
  • For either strategy: keep a transaction and tax record, maintain enough native SOL for fees, and avoid committing funds needed for near-term expenses.
  • On a warning: pause new deposits when withdrawals fail, a program address changes unexpectedly, an oracle or bridge issue is reported, or the position no longer matches your written risk limit.

How to make the final choice

Answer five questions in writing: What assets do you want to own? Where should return come from—borrower interest or trading activity? How much relative-price movement can you tolerate? How quickly might you need the funds? How often can you monitor rates, ranges, incentives, and protocol notices?

If the answers point to interest exposure, a single-asset position, and limited tolerance for inventory drift, investigate lending while accepting its protocol and withdrawal risks. If they point to supplying two assets, monitoring pool activity, and accepting impermanent-loss risk for fee potential, investigate LPing. If you cannot answer the questions or cannot verify an exit path, holding the assets outside DeFi may be the more transparent baseline for comparison.

Evaluate the strategy in the same currency and over the same period as your real goal. Include token-price changes, fees, incentives, transaction costs, and the possibility that you cannot withdraw on schedule. That complete result—not an isolated APY—is the meaningful measure of whether the position served its purpose.
