To route an automation script through SOCKS5, configure the script’s HTTP client or networking library to use a SOCKS5 proxy, then choose whether the client or proxy resolves destination hostnames. In curl, use socks5:// for local DNS resolution or socks5h:// for proxy-side resolution. This configures the client; it does not install or secure a SOCKS5 server.
SOCKS5 is sometimes described as operating near OSI Layer 5, but that is a conceptual shorthand, not a strict layer assignment. The protocol specification calls it a shim between application and transport, and SOCKS does not act as a network-layer gateway.
What SOCKS5 does in an automation setup
A SOCKS5 proxy is a relay that a SOCKS-aware client can ask to connect to a destination on its behalf. Rather than having each automation application implement its own proxy protocol for every target service, the client can use SOCKS to request a connection to a destination address and port.

It also says SOCKS does not provide network-layer gateway services, such as forwarding ICMP messages. The Internet Security Glossary in RFC 2828 describes it as layered under the application layer and above the transport layer. These descriptions explain protocol placement; they do not establish that SOCKS belongs exclusively to one OSI layer.

- Compact and Efficient Design: The FortiGate 40F is designed for small to mid-sized businesses and enterprise branch offices, featuring a compact, fanless desktop form factor that ensures quiet operation and minimizes space usage.
- Robust Connectivity Options: Equipped with 5 GE RJ45 ports, including 1 WAN port and 4 internal ports, this model provides essential connectivity and flexibility for various network configurations in a small-scale environment.
- High-Performance Security: Offers up to 1 Gbps IPS throughput and 600 Mbps threat protection throughput, using Fortinet’s purpose-built security processor technology to deliver industry-leading performance and protection for SSL encrypted traffic.
- Advanced Threat Protection: Integrated with Fortinet’s AI-powered FortiGuard Labs, the FortiGate 40F offers comprehensive cybersecurity, identifying and mitigating both known and unknown threats to maintain robust security across your network.
- Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.
That distinction matters operationally: a SOCKS setting affects applications that are configured to use it. It does not automatically capture all traffic from a device or replace network-layer routing.
How a SOCKS5 connection is negotiated
For a typical TCP connection, the client connects to the SOCKS service, negotiates a supported authentication method, performs any authentication required by that method, and sends a relay request. That request specifies a command, destination address type, destination address, and destination port.
- Connect: The client opens a connection to the SOCKS server. TCP port 1080 is conventional, but the server may listen on another port.
- Negotiate: Client and server select a method that both support.
- Authenticate if required: The client completes the method-specific exchange.
- Request a relay: The client sends a command and destination. SOCKS5 defines CONNECT, BIND, and UDP ASSOCIATE, and supports IPv4 addresses, IPv6 addresses, and domain names.
- Exchange traffic: If the request succeeds, the client and destination communicate through the relay according to the selected mode.
The specification’s supported commands do not guarantee that every proxy implementation or automation library supports every mode. Confirm TCP or UDP support in both the client and server documentation for the behavior you need.

Route a curl request through SOCKS5
The official curl manual documents SOCKS proxy options. For a one-off request with proxy-side hostname resolution, run:
curl --socks5-hostname proxy.example:7000 https://example.com
The equivalent proxy URL form is:
curl --proxy socks5h://proxy.example:7000 https://example.com
Use socks5h:// when the proxy should resolve the target hostname. Use socks5:// when curl should resolve the target locally:
curl --proxy socks5://proxy.example:7000 https://example.com
This choice can matter when the automation environment and proxy have different DNS reachability or when the intended name-resolution path requires one side to resolve the name. If you omit the proxy port, curl assumes port 1080; that default does not mean a particular server is listening there.

| Decision | Option | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Hostname resolution with curl | socks5:// |
curl resolves the target hostname locally. |
| Hostname resolution with curl | socks5h:// |
The proxy resolves the target hostname. |
| Traffic mode | TCP CONNECT | Requests a TCP relay to the destination; verify the client and server support the required use. |
| Traffic mode | UDP ASSOCIATE | Requests UDP relay behavior; support depends on the client and server implementation. |
| Authentication and protection | Method selected during negotiation | Available authentication and encapsulation protections depend on the implementation and negotiated method; methods are not interchangeable. |
SOCKS5 does not, by itself, guarantee encryption of application data. Proxy authentication answers who may use the proxy; protection of the client-to-proxy connection is a separate concern; and TLS or another application-level mechanism protects traffic to the destination when appropriately configured. RFC 1928 says security depends on the authentication and encapsulation methods provided by an implementation and selected during negotiation. RFC 1929 specifies username/password authentication for SOCKS V5, but that authentication exchange should not be treated as encryption for arbitrary proxied traffic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before deploying a SOCKS5 server
There is no single installation recipe that applies to every operating system and SOCKS implementation. Package names, service management, configuration syntax, authentication options, and firewall rules must be checked against the selected server’s current official documentation and the target distribution’s instructions.

- Choose a SOCKS server implementation and confirm its supported SOCKS5 commands, address types, authentication methods, and any encapsulation protections you require.
- Set the listening interface and port deliberately. Port 1080 is conventional, not mandatory; expose the service only to intended client networks.
- Configure access controls and firewall policy for the clients that need the relay, rather than leaving reachability broader than necessary.
- Verify the authentication method and the protection, if any, for the client-to-proxy segment. Do not assume that username/password authentication encrypts proxied payloads.
- Check logs and monitoring so connection failures, unexpected access, and service availability can be investigated.
- Test with the actual automation client, destination type, DNS path, and TCP or UDP mode. A protocol feature is useful only when the chosen client and server both implement it.
Because these settings vary by implementation, do not copy a generic daemon command or configuration fragment without validating it against the server and operating system you are deploying.
What “Layer 5 advantages” means in practice
The useful architectural advantage is application-level control over a relay request: a SOCKS-aware automation client can ask the proxy to connect to a chosen destination without relying on SOCKS to provide network-layer gateway behavior. This can simplify routing for supported applications and lets the client’s DNS choice and connection mode be explicit.
The trade-off is that configuration is per client or library unless another system provides separate traffic interception. SOCKS5 also does not make an application SOCKS-aware, guarantee UDP support, choose a universally secure authentication method, or encrypt the application’s end-to-end traffic. Treat “Layer 5” as a helpful description of where the shim sits in the stack, not as a promise of automatic device-wide routing or security.
