Yes, you can retune a software-defined radio (SDR), but only within the limits of its hardware. Software changes the center frequency, sample rate, bandwidth, gain and demodulator. It cannot make an SDR’s RF front end, clock, connector or antenna operate beyond their designed bands. Before entering a new frequency, check the SDR’s published range, the signal’s bandwidth and modulation, and every part of the antenna and cable path.
What “retuning” an SDR actually does
An SDR converts radio energy into digital data so software can select and process a portion of the spectrum. Entering a new center frequency tells the tuner and digital signal-processing chain where to listen (or, on a transceiver, where to transmit). Sample rate determines how much spectrum is captured at once; bandwidth limits the passband; gain controls signal amplification; and the demodulator interprets AM, FM, SSB or a digital waveform.
Those controls do not expand the physical RF range. A frequency must be inside the device’s specified operating range, and the tuner, filters, clock, ADC/DAC path, connector and antenna must all support it. A setting that the application accepts is not proof that the hardware can receive or transmit usefully there.

| Hardware | Receive/transmit capability | Documented frequency information | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTL-SDR USB receiver | Receive-only | Exact range varies by model; use the manufacturer’s specification | Low-cost scanning, spectrum viewing and learning |
| HackRF Pro | Half-duplex receive or transmit | 100 kHz–6 GHz operating coverage; tunable from 0 Hz to 7.1 GHz; up to 20 million samples per second | One device covering many bands when transmission as well as reception is required |
The HackRF figures are from HackRF documentation accessed in 2026. Its SMA RF connector and software-configurable receive/transmit gain and baseband filtering still require a suitable external RF path. “Half-duplex” means it cannot receive and transmit simultaneously.
#1 Best Overall
- Turn your computer, phone or tablet into a radio scanner/ham radio receiver that can receive nearly all RF signals! Compatible with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and Android
- NESDR SMArt RTL-SDR v5 can be used for the reception of broadcast AM radio, broadcast FM radio, shortwave radio, CB radio, public security radio, trunked radio, air traffic control, ACARS (plane-ground communications), ADS-B (plane tracking), AIS (ship tracking), POCSAG (pagers), NOAA and GOES weather satellites (weather images), weather balloons, radiosondes, DAB radio, DVB-T video, Inmarsat, Iridium, and so much more!
- The best-performing low-cost RTL-SDR available anywhere! Compared with RTL-SDR v3, HF SNR is improved by up to 15dB, VHF & UHF SNR is improved by up to 6dB, tuning accuracy is improved by an average of 4x, and the frequency range is expanded all the way down to 100kHz
- v5 has a frequency capability of 100kHz to 1.75GHz and up to 3.2MHz of instantaneous bandwidth. HF reception below 25MHz is accomplished with direct sampling and requires a suitable antenna. We recommend using a Balun One Nine to make a DIY long wire or dipole antenna (sold separately, product ID B08HGSYB7R or B00R09WHT6)
- Though the direct sampling implementation of NESDR SMArt v5 is much better than any other RTL-SDR, we still recommend using an upconverter like the Ham It Up for a more fulfilling HF experience (sold separately, product ID B076CYK8XZ)
Retune an SDR step by step
- Write down the target. Identify the exact center frequency, expected occupied bandwidth and modulation. A narrow SSB signal, a wide FM channel and a digital signal need different bandwidth and demodulator settings.
- Verify the published RF range. Confirm that the target lies inside the SDR’s specified operating band. If it does not, software retuning will not solve the problem; use hardware designed for that frequency.
- Enter the center frequency. In the SDR application, type the target frequency in the frequency or tuning control. Avoid assuming that a visible waterfall outside the rated range represents a calibrated or usable signal.
- Choose a safe sample rate and bandwidth. Set a sample rate that captures the signal and nearby spectrum without exceeding the device’s limit. Then set the receive or baseband filter close to the signal’s actual bandwidth to reduce unwanted energy and processing load.
- Select the demodulator. Choose AM, FM, SSB or the appropriate digital mode. Incorrect demodulation can make a strong, correctly tuned signal sound or decode like noise.
- Adjust gain gradually. Start conservatively, increase gain until the wanted signal is clear, and watch for a raised noise floor or flattened spectrum. Excess gain can overload the front end, especially near strong transmitters.
- Check the RF path. Confirm the antenna’s band, coax type, SMA plug or adapter, connector condition and any inline filter or attenuator. A software setting cannot make an antenna resonant at a new frequency.
- Validate with a known signal. Compare the result with a local, legal reference signal or a signal generator. If tuning appears correct but reception is weak or distorted, troubleshoot the antenna, filtering, gain and overload before changing software settings again.
Why the antenna and filters matter
An antenna is an electrical component with frequency-dependent efficiency and impedance. An antenna that works well on one band may be inefficient, poorly matched or physically unsuitable on another. Use an antenna specified for the target frequency and an SMA adapter and coax rated for the installation.
Front-end filters are equally important. A band-pass filter admits the desired range; a notch filter rejects a known interferer. Filtering prevents strong out-of-band signals from driving the receiver into compression, where weak signals can disappear even though the target frequency is technically supported. An attenuator can help when overload, rather than sensitivity, is the problem.

When transmission is involved
Receive-only experiments and transmitting are different engineering and legal tasks. A transceiver needs appropriate external filtering, power control, an antenna system rated for the output, and a legal operating authority for the frequency and emission.

The rule says radios designed or expected to be modified by someone other than the manufacturer in ways that affect those operating parameters must be certified as software-defined radios. Certification does not by itself grant permission to transmit on every band; frequency allocation, operator licensing and emission rules still apply.

HackRF documentation reports that most HackRF One transmit power through 4 GHz is between 0 and 10 dBm. Treat that as a documented device characteristic, not as a guarantee of legal or adequate radiated power for a particular application. Measure the complete setup and use the required filtering and power-control hardware.
Keeping multiple SDRs synchronized
If several SDRs must track one another, independent internal oscillators can drift apart. A shared frequency reference improves alignment. HackRF documentation describes CLKIN and CLKOUT connections for sharing a clock reference and supports synchronization and triggering workflows. Use the reference level and cabling specified for the hardware; connecting clocks casually can damage equipment or produce unreliable timing.

Common failure symptoms and fixes
- The application tunes, but no signal appears: verify the antenna band, connector, sample rate, demodulator and local signal availability.
- Signals look wide, distorted or intermittently vanish: reduce gain, add attenuation or install a band-pass filter to address front-end overload.
- A frequency is outside the device specification: stop trying software settings and choose an SDR or converter designed for that band.
- Reception changes dramatically after an adapter is added: check SMA gender, 50-ohm compatibility, cable loss and connector seating.
- Several radios slowly disagree in frequency: provide a compatible shared clock reference and confirm that each unit is configured to use it.
- Transmission is present but unauthorized or splattered: stop transmitting, add the required filtering and power control, and verify the applicable regulations before testing again.
Choosing an SDR and accessories for a new band
Buy for the complete signal chain, not just the tuner number. For receive-only work, an RTL-SDR USB receiver is the sensible low-cost starting point when its specified range covers the target. Choose HackRF Pro when broad 100 kHz–6 GHz coverage, up to 20 million samples per second and half-duplex transmission are useful in one unit. Neither choice removes the need for a band-appropriate antenna, SMA cables or adapters, attenuators and filters.

Frequently asked questions
Can software unlock a frequency outside my SDR’s published range?
No. Software can expose tuning controls or produce an uncalibrated response, but it cannot redesign the tuner, front end, clock or antenna.
Do I need a new antenna when I change frequency?
Usually you need an antenna designed or adequately matched for the new band. The old antenna may work acceptably only if its electrical design covers both frequencies.
Is an RTL-SDR suitable for transmitting?
No. RTL-SDR USB devices are receive-oriented hardware. Use a transceiver specifically designed for transmission and follow the applicable rules.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can HackRF Pro receive and transmit at the same time?
No. It is half-duplex, so it operates in receive or transmit mode rather than both simultaneously.
Why add a filter if the SDR is already tuned correctly?
A strong signal outside the selected channel can still overload the analog front end. External band-pass or notch filtering reduces that unwanted energy before it reaches the receiver.
