There is no defensible phone-wide winner yet. Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is positioned for extreme peak CPU and GPU speed, while MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro emphasizes an all-big-core design, 2 nm manufacturing and lower power during sustained work. Qualcomm and MediaTek quote improvements against their own previous chips, not against each other, so those percentages cannot establish which is faster, cooler or longer-lasting.

The most useful buying rule is to compare complete phones. Battery capacity, display settings, cooling hardware, firmware, modem conditions and power limits can outweigh the processor name. Current independent evidence consists of a Snapdragon reference-device test that produced very high Geekbench 7 scores but became hot under heavy CPU work; there is not yet a matched, independently controlled Dimensity-versus-Snapdragon thermal or battery test.

Quick verdict

Question Best answer supported by current evidence
Which is faster at peak? Snapdragon advertises the more aggressive peak CPU/GPU positioning, including two Oryon prime cores reaching 5 GHz. Dimensity also claims major gains, but the figures use different baselines and cannot be converted into a head-to-head result.
Which is faster after 20–30 minutes? Not established. Sustained results depend heavily on the phone’s vapor chamber, frame-rate limits, firmware and skin temperature target.
Which runs cooler? Not established. Qualcomm and MediaTek publish efficiency claims against their own predecessors; no controlled cross-brand thermal result is available.
Which gives better gaming battery life? Not established. Measure battery percentage consumed during the same game on matched phones at the same brightness, refresh rate and frame-rate setting.
Which has stronger camera and video capability? Snapdragon’s published platform capabilities include 8K at 60 frames per second and 4K at 240 frames per second. The available Dimensity announcement details emphasize AI and gaming rather than a directly comparable video specification.
Which should you buy? Choose the phone with the better measured sustained performance, thermal behavior, battery endurance, camera implementation and software support. Do not buy from the chip label alone.

Those are Qualcomm’s generational claims, not measurements against Dimensity 9600 Pro. The platform also advertises 8K60 and 4K240 video capability, which matters to buyers who record high-resolution or high-frame-rate footage, although the final quality still depends on the phone’s camera sensors, thermal limits, storage and software.

MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro

MediaTek announced Dimensity 9600 Pro on September 15, 2026. It is described as a 2 nm flagship system-on-chip with a 2+3+3 all-big-core CPU: two C2-Ultra cores, three C2-Pro cores in a higher clock tier and three C2-Pro cores in a lower clock tier. The chip includes dual NPUs and first-wave support for LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage.

MediaTek claims up to 17% higher single-core performance, 15% higher multi-core performance and a 61% reduction in multi-core power consumption versus its previous-generation flagship. It also claims 27% greater peak GPU performance, 24% better peak GPU power efficiency, 18% faster ray tracing and native gaming above 185 frames per second. Each percentage is a comparison with MediaTek’s own earlier product, so it cannot be read as a Snapdragon-versus-Dimensity score.

How the architectures differ

Snapdragon’s peak-speed strategy

Two very high-clocked Oryon prime cores give Snapdragon a clear peak-performance narrative. A 5 GHz mobile CPU target can help short bursts such as opening demanding apps, compiling a small project, applying a photo filter or completing a brief game workload. Qualcomm also places substantial emphasis on the Adreno GPU and its claimed generational performance and efficiency gains.

Peak specifications do not guarantee that a phone can hold that speed. A thin handset may reduce clocks after heat accumulates, while a larger model with a better vapor chamber may sustain more of the advertised performance. Display resolution and the phone maker’s frame-rate policy also determine how much GPU work is actually required.

Dimensity’s all-big-core and efficiency strategy

Dimensity 9600 Pro uses eight performance-oriented cores rather than mixing in a conventional group of low-power cores. Two C2-Ultra cores handle the highest-priority work; the three higher-tier C2-Pro cores and three lower-tier C2-Pro cores provide additional throughput at different operating points. This arrangement is intended to give the scheduler more performance-oriented choices for sustained multi-threaded work.

The 2 nm process, dual NPUs and the announced power reductions are designed for efficiency under demanding workloads. That may benefit long gaming sessions, video processing or on-device AI, but the outcome still depends on how the handset schedules tasks and dissipates heat. An all-big-core design is not automatically more efficient in every light-use or standby scenario.

Why the vendor percentages cannot be combined

Suppose Qualcomm reports a 44% GPU gain over its 2025 predecessor and MediaTek reports a 27% GPU gain over its own predecessor. The two earlier chips may have different performance levels, test scenes, drivers, power limits and cooling conditions. Multiplying or subtracting those percentages would create a number that neither company measured.

For a genuine comparison, both chips must run the same application, scene, resolution, frame-rate cap, operating-system build and power mode in phones with comparable cooling. Even then, a result describes those specific devices rather than every phone using the SoC.

What independent testing shows so far

A Tom’s Guide hands-on test of a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 reference design recorded 4,161 in Geekbench 7 single-core and 12,464 in multi-core. The report also observed that the back of the reference design became hot during heavy CPU work.

These numbers are useful evidence that the reference platform can deliver very high short-run CPU performance. They are not a universal score for retail phones, and they do not show that Snapdragon is hotter than Dimensity. A reference board, a production phone with a large cooling system and a thin phone with conservative thermal limits can all produce different results from the same chip.

No cited independent test currently provides a matched Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 Pro comparison for battery endurance, surface temperature or sustained frame rate. Until such testing exists, any claim that one chip always runs cooler or lasts longer is speculation.

Heat: what determines the result

Chip efficiency is only one input

MediaTek’s 24% peak-GPU-efficiency and 61% multi-core-power claims are improvements against its own previous flagship. Qualcomm’s 40% GPU-power-efficiency claim is likewise a generational comparison. They indicate that both designs target better performance per watt, but neither figure predicts the temperature of a particular phone.

Heat is produced by the complete system. The relevant variables include:

  • Vapor-chamber area, graphite layers, frame materials and contact between the SoC and cooler.
  • Battery size and charging state. A phone may allow more power while plugged in, or reduce performance while charging to limit heat.
  • Display resolution, brightness and refresh rate. Driving a high-resolution 144 Hz panel can consume more power than a 60 Hz mode.
  • Game engine, graphics settings, ray-tracing effects and frame-rate cap.
  • Ambient temperature, case use and whether the phone is held or placed on a surface.
  • Firmware scheduling, thermal thresholds and background synchronization.
  • Modem signal quality. A weak cellular signal can increase radio power during downloads or streaming.

How to compare temperatures fairly

Use the same room, case condition, battery state and charging state. Record both the external hottest spot and the area held by the hand. A reported peak temperature without the location, instrument and workload is difficult to interpret. Also record performance after heat builds; a cooler first five minutes can hide aggressive throttling later.

Battery life: why a chip-only answer is impossible

Battery endurance is a phone-level result, not a fixed property of Snapdragon or Dimensity. A larger battery can offset a less efficient workload, while a bright high-refresh display can erase an SoC efficiency advantage. Camera recording, standby drain, 5G reception and background applications create different power profiles from gaming.

For gaming, the useful metric is energy consumed for a defined result, not merely the chip’s advertised efficiency percentage. A phone that renders a stable 60 fps while using more power may be preferable to one that briefly reaches 120 fps and then throttles. Compare the same title and settings, starting at the same battery percentage, and record the percentage consumed over a fixed period.

A reproducible gaming battery test

  1. Update both phones to current stable firmware and reboot them. Disable unrelated downloads and close background applications.
  2. Set the same display resolution, refresh rate, brightness and game graphics preset. If one phone cannot match a setting, document the difference instead of hiding it.
  3. Use the same account, game version, map or benchmark sequence and network connection. Keep both phones unplugged and at a similar starting temperature.
  4. Play for 30 or 60 minutes. Log average and one-percent-low frame rate if the tool provides it, along with battery percentage consumed.
  5. Measure surface temperature at fixed intervals, including at the end of the run. Note whether either phone reduced clocks, brightness or frame rate.
  6. Repeat the test at least once. Report room temperature, phone model, battery capacity, case status and charging state with the results.

For everyday use, add a mixed test containing camera recording, web browsing, video playback, messaging and cellular data. Standby drain should be measured over many hours with the same accounts and signal conditions; a short idle observation is not enough to rank phones.

Gaming performance and ray tracing

Snapdragon’s advertised GPU gains target peak rendering performance and broad gaming support. MediaTek claims 27% higher peak GPU performance, 18% faster ray tracing and native gaming above 185 fps compared with its preceding flagship context. “Native” frame rates may depend on a particular game, resolution, interpolation technology or developer profile, so the number should not be treated as a guaranteed result in every title.

For competitive games, sustained frame-rate stability and input latency matter more than a one-minute peak. Test the title you actually play, at the resolution and frame-rate mode you would use. Check for stutter during busy scenes, shader compilation pauses and performance after 20–30 minutes. Ray tracing can change the balance: a chip with a higher peak raster score may not deliver the best ray-traced frame pacing once heat and power limits apply.

AI, cameras and video

AI processing

Both platforms are designed for intensive on-device AI. Dimensity 9600 Pro includes dual NPUs and is presented by MediaTek as a “Native AI” architecture for agentic experiences. Qualcomm’s platform materials also position the chip for AI, camera and connectivity workloads. The available announcements do not provide a directly comparable AI-throughput measurement, model list or sustained-wattage test, so buyers should evaluate the features implemented by the phone maker.

Ask whether the specific applications you use support on-device processing, what languages and models are available, and whether tasks fall back to the cloud. Memory capacity, storage speed and software updates can affect perceived AI responsiveness as much as theoretical NPU throughput.

Video and camera support

Qualcomm lists 8K60 and 4K240 video capabilities for Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Those are platform capabilities, not promises that every phone will expose both modes. Sensor readout speed, heat, storage throughput, stabilization and the camera application determine what a retail device actually offers.

The available Dimensity 9600 Pro information emphasizes its CPU, GPU, NPU, memory and storage design rather than a matching 8K or 4K240 statement. Do not infer that it lacks a feature solely because it is not listed here; verify the camera specifications and recording modes for the exact phone.

Memory, storage and connectivity considerations

Dimensity 9600 Pro is described as supporting first-wave LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage. Those interfaces can improve bandwidth and storage responsiveness when a manufacturer pairs them with suitable components. The benefit depends on the phone’s actual memory configuration, storage capacity, controller tuning and thermal behavior.

The supplied platform details do not establish a complete modem or Wi-Fi comparison. Check the retail phone’s supported 5G bands, Wi-Fi generation, carrier certification, dual-SIM behavior and satellite or emergency features for your country. A theoretically advanced modem is of limited value if the local model omits a band your carrier uses.

How to choose between actual phones

Choose a Snapdragon phone when these priorities dominate

  • You want the highest advertised peak CPU and GPU capability and a model with independent sustained-performance testing.
  • You record high-resolution or high-frame-rate video and the phone explicitly enables the required 8K60 or 4K240 mode.
  • Your preferred games, emulators or accessories have better documented support on the specific Snapdragon model.
  • The phone provides a larger cooler, a stable high-frame-rate mode and software updates that match your usage period.

Choose a Dimensity phone when these priorities dominate

  • You value a 2 nm flagship design, all-big-core throughput and the platform’s stated efficiency goals.
  • The exact handset demonstrates lower battery consumption or steadier frame rates in a test using your games.
  • You need LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 in a model that pairs those interfaces with enough RAM and storage for your workload.
  • The phone offers the camera features, carrier bands and software support you need at the better overall price.

Reject both options when the phone implementation is weak

A flagship SoC cannot compensate for a small battery, an uncomfortable thermal design, poor modem reception, limited storage, an overly bright display mode or short software support. Compare complete specifications and measured behavior before treating either processor as a reason to buy.

A buyer’s checklist

  1. Identify the exact regional model and confirm its processor, battery capacity, display resolution and maximum refresh rate.
  2. Check independent tests for sustained CPU/GPU performance, not only a single benchmark run.
  3. Look for a 30–60-minute gaming result that reports frame-rate stability, battery consumed and temperature.
  4. Confirm camera recording modes, stabilization, storage requirements and overheating limits for the video modes you use.
  5. Verify local 5G bands, Wi-Fi support, dual-SIM behavior and carrier certification.
  6. Compare promised operating-system and security-update duration, because long-term software support affects the usable life of a flagship phone.
  7. Compare street price and availability in your country. Retail model names, prices and country availability for these newly announced platforms were not established in the available launch information.

What would settle the Snapdragon-versus-Dimensity question

A reliable verdict requires retail phones tested under matched conditions, ideally with similar battery capacities, displays and cooling. The test report should identify firmware, memory and storage configuration, room temperature, brightness, refresh rate, game version and network conditions. It should publish short-run benchmark scores alongside results after 20–30 minutes, surface temperature maps, battery percentage consumed and frame-time graphs.

Until that evidence appears, the strongest supported conclusion is narrower: Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 advertises exceptional peak speed and major generational GPU gains, while Dimensity 9600 Pro advertises an advanced 2 nm all-big-core platform with substantial efficiency and ray-tracing improvements over its predecessor. Neither announcement proves a universal advantage in heat, battery life or sustained gaming.
