No: a 12-year-old is below Snapchat’s stated minimum age. Snapchat says account holders must be at least 13, with regional variations and potentially higher age limits for some features. A parent’s permission does not change the platform’s age rule, so do not help a child enter a false birth date to get around it. Check the rules that apply where you live.
What is Snapchat’s minimum age?
Snapchat’s support and parent resources state that users must be at least 13 to create an account, subject to regional variations; some features may have higher age requirements. See Snapchat’s parental tools information and its minimum-age guidance for the platform’s current wording.
The age threshold is an eligibility floor, not a promise that the app is right for every teen as soon as they reach it. At 12, the practical recommendation is to wait until the child meets the applicable age rule. If they already have an account, its existence does not mean they are eligible; Snapchat says suspected underage accounts can be reported.

Snapchat describes teen protections that include limits on who can contact teens, private friend lists, and ways to block or report unwanted contact. These are the company’s descriptions of its intended controls; they do not establish that every risk is prevented.
Family Center
Snapchat says Family Center lets caregivers see a teen’s friends and recent communications and access certain safety information and tools. It does not provide a transcript of private conversations or reveal message contents. Parents can use it to understand recent contact and report concerns while continuing direct conversations with their teen.

Location and Snap Map
Snapchat says location sharing is off by default and that a user can share their location only with accepted friends. If an eligible teen chooses to use Snap Map, review the sharing selection together and talk through which friends, if any, should be able to see the location. Do not treat the default as a substitute for checking the teen’s choices.

How should a family decide when a teen becomes eligible?
Once the teen meets the applicable minimum age, deciding whether to use Snapchat is a separate family choice. Consider whether they can manage contact requests, make thoughtful image-sharing and location decisions, cope with pressure to respond, and ask for help when something feels wrong. These are practical discussion points, not a validated readiness test.

- Talk through who belongs on the friend list and what to do about unwanted contact.

What is the current European Union regulatory context?
On 26 March 2026, the European Commission opened formal proceedings to investigate whether Snapchat complies with child-protection requirements under the Digital Services Act. The Commission identified concerns that included age assurance, contact risks, default settings, and access to information about prohibited or age-restricted products. These are concerns under investigation, not a final finding that Snapchat violated the law. The announcement is about the Commission’s investigation and does not change the stated minimum age for a 12-year-old.
