SMILE and THEMIS answer different parts of the same auroral question: how does energy carried by the solar wind move through Earth’s magnetic environment and produce changing light in the upper atmosphere? SMILE combines remote images of the magnetosphere and aurora with local ion and magnetic-field measurements from one spacecraft. THEMIS used several spacecraft plus ground observatories to locate the onset of auroral substorms. Cluster’s supported connection here is as scientific and technological heritage for SMILE, not as a third mission with a fully documented comparison.
Why aurora science is a measurement problem
An aurora is the visible end of a process that spans very different distances and timescales. The solar wind brings charged particles and magnetic fields to Earth. Their interaction with the magnetosphere can store energy in near-Earth space. When that energy is released, particles can travel down magnetic field lines toward the upper atmosphere, where collisions with atmospheric gases produce auroral light.
No single detector can observe that entire chain at once. A camera can show where the aurora brightens, but not necessarily which local particle population or magnetic structure caused the change. A particle detector can measure ions at a spacecraft, but it cannot by itself show the full shape of the magnetosphere. A magnetic sensor records field changes at its location, while a ground camera sees the atmospheric response from below.

- Remote imaging supplies a broad view of the magnetosphere or auroral oval.
- In-situ instruments measure particles and magnetic fields where a spacecraft is flying.
- Multiple spacecraft reveal how a disturbance changes from one region to another.
- Ground observatories record the aurora and magnetic effects closer to Earth.
Putting those observations on a common timeline lets scientists test whether a disturbance in space precedes an auroral change, occurs at the same time, or is merely correlated with it.
How the solar wind leads to auroras
- Solar-wind particles and fields reach the magnetosphere. The incoming flow interacts with Earth’s magnetic shield rather than simply passing through it.
- Energy is transferred and stored. Magnetic fields and plasma in the magnetosphere can be rearranged, allowing energy to accumulate in regions of near-Earth space.
- A disturbance releases or redirects that energy. Changes in the magnetic configuration can send particles along field lines toward the polar atmosphere.
- Particles enter the upper atmosphere. Their collisions excite atmospheric gases.
- Excited gases emit light. The resulting glow is the aurora, whose location, brightness and structure can change as the particle input and magnetic environment change.
This sequence is a physical framework, not a promise that every auroral form has the same trigger. Auroras occur at several scales, and substorms are only one class of auroral activity. The value of missions such as SMILE and THEMIS is that they measure different links in the sequence instead of inferring the whole process from the light alone.
What does SMILE observe?
SMILE stands for Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer. It is a joint mission of the European Space Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. SMILE launched on 19 May 2026 aboard Vega-C, reached its designated science orbit on 20 June 2026, and moved into its science phase after instrument commissioning. ESA’s June status report described commissioning through August, and the ESA mission page carried a “Science begins for Smile” update dated 30 September 2026. Those dates describe the mission’s status as of October 2026; operational schedules can change as a mission develops.
Four instruments, four kinds of evidence
| Instrument | Measurement | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) | Soft X-ray images | Provides a remote view of the solar-wind interaction with Earth’s magnetic environment. |
| Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) | Ultraviolet images of auroras | Shows the auroral response over a broad area and allows changes to be compared with conditions in space. |
| Light Ion Analyser (LIA) | Local light-ion measurements | Samples the particles around the spacecraft rather than viewing them remotely. |
| Magnetometer (MAG) | Local magnetic-field measurements | Records the magnetic environment at the spacecraft’s position. |
SXI and UVI are remote-sensing instruments. LIA and MAG are in-situ instruments: they characterize the immediate particle and magnetic environment around SMILE. The distinction is essential. An image can show a large-scale boundary or auroral pattern, while an in-situ reading tells scientists what the spacecraft is physically encountering at that moment.
Why SMILE’s orbit is unusual for the problem
SMILE’s orbit is designed to combine a distant vantage point with access to auroral observations. ESA’s June orbit update placed the high point at about 120,920 km above the North Pole and the low point at about 5,027 km above the South Pole. From the distant part of the orbit, the imagers can view a large portion of the magnetospheric interaction. As the spacecraft moves along its orbit, it also reaches a much lower altitude that changes the local measurement context.

ESA says UVI can watch the northern lights continuously for up to 45 hours. That is a stated mission capability, not a claim that every observation will last that long or that a particular scientific discovery has already been made. Long observing intervals are useful because auroral and solar-wind conditions can evolve over many hours; a continuous view reduces the chance of confusing separate events seen in short snapshots.
How SMILE connects remote and local observations
SMILE’s scientific design addresses a common weakness in space-weather observations: the instrument that sees the large structure is often far from the instrument that measures the local plasma. The mission’s two imagers can establish where the magnetosphere and aurora are changing, while LIA and MAG provide particle and field context at the spacecraft. Analysts can then ask whether a local change coincides with a boundary motion, a change in auroral brightness, or another large-scale feature.
Recommended Free Tools
The approach does not mean that SMILE measures every point in the magnetosphere simultaneously. Its in-situ instruments sample the spacecraft’s immediate location, and the spacecraft’s position changes along its orbit. The remote images supply the spatial context needed to interpret that local sample. In practical terms, SMILE is built to connect “what is happening around Earth” with “what the spacecraft is encountering here and now.”
That combination also clarifies what the mission cannot claim on its own. A single observation cannot establish a universal auroral cycle, and a mission capability such as a 45-hour viewing interval is not the same as a result from collected data. Scientific conclusions require repeated events, calibrated instruments and comparisons with other observations.
How does THEMIS study auroras?
THEMIS means Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms. NASA describes it as a five-spacecraft mission launched in 2007 to investigate how mass and energy move through near-Earth space and what initiates auroras. In 2010, two probes were redirected into lunar orbits and became ARTEMIS; three spacecraft continued Earth-orbit investigations.

Multipoint sampling in space
THEMIS’s strength is not a single panoramic image. It is the ability to place spacecraft in different regions and compare their measurements. If a magnetic or particle disturbance appears at one location and later at another, the timing and separation help constrain where the process began and how it propagated. That is the kind of evidence needed to distinguish an initiating event from a later consequence.
Spacecraft coordinated with the ground
THEMIS also worked with ground-based all-sky cameras and magnetometers. The cameras recorded changes in the aurora while ground magnetic sensors tracked disturbances closer to Earth. Spacecraft in the magnetosphere measured the corresponding space environment. NASA project scientist David Sibeck summarized the logic this way: “When you have the measurements in both places, you can relate the two things together.” In that context, “both places” means ground and space.
Ground coordination gives a multipoint mission an atmospheric reference. A spacecraft may detect a field change, but the ground network can show whether an aurora brightened, dimmed or moved at the same time. Conversely, an auroral change can be checked against measurements in space instead of being treated as an isolated optical event.
What THEMIS found about substorms
NASA reports that THEMIS observations linked disturbances in the magnetosphere with auroral behavior on the ground. In one NASA account of field-line oscillations, the aurora brightened and dimmed at a period of roughly six minutes. That value belongs to the particular observations described in that account; it is not a general period for all auroras.
NASA also identifies magnetic reconnection as a primary driver of substorms in THEMIS’s prime science. Reconnection changes the arrangement of magnetic fields and can release stored energy, helping explain how a substorm develops. Calling it a primary driver does not make it the sole explanation for every auroral form. NASA continues to describe different aurora types and smaller-scale structures as active areas of study.

SMILE, THEMIS and Cluster compared
The missions are easiest to distinguish by the physical region they sample, whether they image remotely or measure locally, how many spacecraft provide simultaneous points, whether ground instruments are part of the observing strategy, and the question each arrangement can answer.
| Mission | Physical region and sampling | Remote versus in-situ measurements | Spacecraft arrangement | Ground coordination | Main question supported by the measurements |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SMILE | Solar-wind interaction with Earth’s magnetic environment and the auroral response | SXI and UVI provide remote images; LIA and MAG measure local ions and magnetic fields | One spacecraft is described in the mission’s polar orbit; multipoint spacing is not part of the stated design | The mission strategy centers on combining spacecraft observations; a specific ground-instrument network is not established in the supplied mission description | How can the external interaction, magnetospheric structure and auroral response be viewed together? |
| THEMIS | Different regions of near-Earth space during substorms, plus the auroral zone | Spacecraft make local particle and field measurements; ground cameras provide auroral imaging | Five probes launched together; two later became ARTEMIS and three continued Earth-orbit science | All-sky cameras and ground magnetometers are integral to the investigation | Where and when does a substorm begin, and how does the disturbance relate to auroral change? |
| Cluster | Detailed region and sampling description not established by the cited ESA heritage material | Specific instrument inventory and observation method are not established here | Not stated in the supported material | Not stated in the supported material | In this account, Cluster provides documented scientific and technological heritage for SMILE rather than a fully specified comparison |
The table shows why “which mission is better?” is the wrong question. SMILE is organized around a combined remote-and-local view of the solar-wind interaction. THEMIS was organized around multipoint timing and the onset of substorms, with ground observations tied to spacecraft data. They are complementary measurement strategies aimed at different links in the same Sun–Earth system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is Cluster’s connection to SMILE?
ESA states that SMILE builds on Cluster’s scientific and technological heritage. ESA also says that SMILE’s LIA and MAG instruments draw on knowledge and experience from Cluster and Double Star. That supports a concise heritage claim: earlier missions supplied experience that helped inform SMILE’s in-situ particle and magnetic-field instrumentation.
Heritage does not mean that Cluster and SMILE are the same mission or that their instruments are identical. It also does not establish, for this article, Cluster’s launch chronology, spacecraft geometry, complete instrument list or a named Cluster auroral discovery. Those details require Cluster-specific official documentation. The supported connection is about lineage of science and technology, not a substitute for a full Cluster mission history.

ESA Director of Science Professor Carole Mundell described the broader idea in 2026: “It builds on ground-breaking scientific and technological heritage from previous missions, including Cluster and XMM-Newton, taking tried-and-tested technologies and applying them in a new way to reveal Earth’s magnetic environment like never before.” The statement characterizes mission heritage and ambition; it is not an independently measured performance result.

What each mission can and cannot explain
SMILE: connect scales
- Can address: how a large-scale view of the magnetospheric interaction and aurora relates to local ion and magnetic-field measurements.
- Cannot establish from one event: a universal auroral pattern, a guaranteed storm-warning time or a causal rule that applies to every auroral form.
THEMIS: locate sequence and onset
- Can address: the timing and spatial relationship between disturbances in near-Earth space and auroral changes, especially during substorms.
- Cannot reduce all auroras to one mechanism: reconnection is a primary substorm driver in the mission’s findings, while auroral types and fine-scale structures have additional questions.
Cluster: provide heritage context here
- Can support: the claim that SMILE’s science and technology draw on experience associated with Cluster, including heritage relevant to LIA and MAG.
- Cannot support from the stated material: a detailed mission comparison or a specific Cluster aurora result.
Why combining missions improves auroral science
Each observing pattern removes a different ambiguity. Remote imaging tells scientists where a change is occurring. In-situ sensors show what the local plasma and magnetic field are doing. Multiple spacecraft test whether a signal is moving through space or appearing simultaneously at separated locations. Ground cameras and magnetometers connect the space disturbance to the atmospheric response that observers call an aurora.
Used together, those measurements support a chain of reasoning rather than a single visual correlation:
- Identify a change in the solar-wind or magnetospheric environment.
- Check local particle and magnetic-field measurements for a physical disturbance.
- Track the disturbance across spacecraft or across a spacecraft-to-ground baseline.
- Compare the timing with auroral brightening, dimming or motion.
- Repeat the analysis across events before treating the relationship as a general rule.
That is also why the missions should not be presented as guaranteed forecasting systems. Their observations can improve understanding of the processes that produce magnetic storms and auroral substorms, but the official descriptions do not establish a fixed warning time or a promise that one mission alone can predict every dangerous event.

SMILE’s 2026 dates are mission-status facts: launch occurred on 19 May, the designated science orbit was reached on 20 June, commissioning was planned through August, and ESA reported the beginning of science in September. They should be read with their dates because a spacecraft’s operating phase can change.
The four-instrument count is a specification, not a measure of scientific output. The “up to 45 hours” ultraviolet viewing figure is a stated capability, not a guarantee for each orbit. The roughly six-minute auroral variation belongs to a particular NASA-reported THEMIS-related observation, not to auroras as a class. Keeping those qualifications attached prevents a capability, a mission milestone and a single-event result from being mistaken for the same kind of evidence.
