The Smeg SHU970X is a 90 cm undermount rangehood with three speeds, a manufacturer-rated maximum airflow of 690 m³/h and support for either ducted or recirculating installation. Its dimensions, duct requirements and recurring carbon-filter needs are key checks before buying. This is a specification-based review, not a hands-on test: no independent performance results or first-hand experience are established here.
What the Smeg SHU970X offers
Smeg Australia describes the SHU970X as an integrated, undermount hood with button controls and stainless steel anti-grease filters. The product sheet specifies three speeds, three supplied stainless steel grease filters and two 1 W LED lights.

The airflow and noise values above are Smeg specifications, not independent measurements of an installed hood. Maximum airflow is reported as a free-outlet value on Smeg’s product page, so do not assume an installation will deliver that rate: ducting and the installed configuration matter.

The 900 mm width makes cabinet opening and the cooktop arrangement essential checks. Confirm the actual cabinet dimensions, mounting arrangement, clearance above the hob, duct route and local electrical requirements using the installation manual for the specific market and unit. The listed product dimensions alone do not establish required cabinet cut-outs or installation clearances.

- Measure the available opening and confirm it suits a 900 mm undermount model.
- Plan for 150 mm diameter ducting if routing extracted air outside, and verify the route is practical for your kitchen.
- If you cannot duct to atmosphere, confirm the recirculation setup and compatible carbon filters are available before committing.
- Check the applicable local installation instructions and electrical requirements; the product sheet lists 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz and 10 A.
Smeg lists both ducted and recirculating operation. Those modes are not interchangeable in practical terms: recirculation relies on carbon filters, while ducting sends extracted air outside. Choose based on the available route and your willingness to maintain the filters.
What recirculation costs to maintain
CHOICE identifies KITFC152 as the carbon filter for the SHU970X and says two are needed for recirculating use. It reports replacement every four months and an annual carbon-filter cost of $259. CHOICE’s listing does not show the price date, so treat $259 as a reported figure, not a current quote. Confirm present compatibility, local stock and price before purchase.

The stainless steel grease filters are supplied with the hood; carbon filters are a separate requirement identified for recirculation. The available information does not establish a current replacement price for the grease filters.
Is the SHU970X still available and supportable?
CHOICE marks the SHU970X as discontinued. That indicates reported discontinued status, not that every retailer or market has no remaining stock. Check local availability, service support and consumable-filter supply before buying, especially if you are choosing a used or remaining-stock unit.

A parts lookup page returned “No Parts found” for this model at the time it was checked. That result is inconclusive: it does not prove that Smeg or another supplier cannot provide parts. Ask the regional seller or service channel about the specific component you may need, rather than treating the lookup result as a definitive parts notice.
The product sheet states a two-year parts-and-labour warranty, but coverage can depend on market and purchase date. Verify the warranty that applies to the exact unit with the regional seller.

How to judge it against another 90 cm rangehood
Compare like with like rather than choosing on the headline airflow number alone. Look for the same test method, and distinguish a free-outlet maximum from performance in an installed duct run. Then check whether the competing model supports your intended extraction route, fits the cabinet and clearances, and has filters and service support you can obtain locally.

The SHU970X may suit a kitchen designed for a 90 cm undermount hood where the cabinet, 150 mm duct route or recirculation arrangement can be verified. Its headline airflow and noise ratings are manufacturer specifications, while its reported discontinued status and recurring carbon-filter needs make local support and ongoing filter supply important buying checks. The evidence available supports a specification-based assessment, not a claim about real-world extraction or noise performance.
