The Smeg BCC02 grinds beans and dispenses coffee at the touch of a button, but it does not automate milk preparation: cappuccinos and other milk drinks require you to steam and clean milk equipment by hand. Its narrow footprint may suit a limited counter, though its listed depth is 433 mm. Whether it is a good fit depends on your available space, willingness to use a manual steam wand, and independent evidence about drink quality and local value.
What the Smeg BCC02 does
Smeg describes the BCC02 as an automatic espresso coffee machine with a built-in grinder, thermoblock heating and a stainless-steel steam wand. The cited regional listing for model BCC02WHMEU specifies six coffee drinks, hot water and steam, adjustable grind level and drink length, a removable brewing unit, and an automatic rinse at startup. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance findings. Regional suffixes, voltage and plugs can differ, so check the listing for your market. Smeg product listing
The distinction that matters most is between coffee and milk automation. The machine handles grinding and coffee dispensing through one-touch selection; you control milk steaming yourself. If you want a machine to texture and dispense milk automatically, this is not that kind of setup.

For the cited regional version, Smeg lists dimensions of 180 mm wide, 433 mm deep and 336 mm high. It is notably narrow, but the depth is substantial relative to its width. Measure the counter area front-to-back, including room to access the water tank and bean container, rather than judging fit from width alone. Smeg product listing

The same listing gives the bean container a 150 g capacity and the removable water tank a 1.4 L capacity. These figures describe the listed version; they do not establish how many drinks you will get between refills, since that depends on drink selection and settings. Confirm the capacities on the product page for the exact regional model you are considering. Smeg product listing
Can the BCC02 make cappuccino?
Yes. It can dispense coffee and provides steam for milk drinks, but you must texture the milk with the manual wand. Smeg South Africa recommends refrigerated full-cream or semi-skimmed cow’s milk at around 5°C and notes that results depend on the milk and how you move the wand. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independently measured result. Smeg South Africa FAQ

The practical trade-off is control versus convenience: you handle the milk texture and wand yourself, then rinse the steam equipment after use. If you prefer a one-touch drink that includes automatically prepared milk, the BCC02’s workflow may feel too hands-on.

You can adjust the grind; Smeg advises changing it while the machine is operating or, for first use, with an empty bean container. Follow the instructions for your model and market. Smeg FAQ

The built-in startup rinse is not a substitute for all cleaning. Smeg lists manual cleaning for the coffee dispenser and steam nozzle, and recommends a manual rinse after each use of the steam function. Its FAQ says the package includes a brush, a water-hardness strip and a special needle for cleaning the BCC02 steam nozzle. Check the box contents for your regional package. Cleaning alerts and upkeep
Smeg lists alerts for descaling, a full grounds container, low beans, an empty water tank and an incorrectly inserted brewing group. The brewing unit is removable, while the coffee dispenser and steam nozzle require manual cleaning. Plan for that hands-on upkeep, particularly if you regularly prepare milk drinks.
