More of the apps and services drivers use in the car are supplied by a smartphone, but that does not mean the car has stopped running software. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto bring phone-based features to a compatible vehicle display; Google built-in runs in the vehicle’s infotainment system and can work without a phone. The direction is increasingly a blend of the two, not a simple replacement of the car by the phone.
What “smartphone-powered” in-car software means
A car’s infotainment experience has two possible software sources: the phone connected to the vehicle, or software installed in the vehicle itself. The distinction matters because the phone-based system depends on a compatible device and vehicle, while a built-in system can provide core functions from the car.
- Apple CarPlay: The iPhone supplies supported apps and features, presented through compatible vehicle hardware.
- Android Auto: An Android phone supplies apps and features presented on a compatible car screen.
- Google built-in: Google technology and services are incorporated into the vehicle’s infotainment system; Google says a phone is optional.
Google explicitly distinguishes Android Auto from Google built-in: the former brings apps from an Android phone to the car screen, while the latter runs as part of the vehicle system. Google’s explanation of Android Auto and Google built-in
Why the smartphone remains central
Apps and familiar services travel with the driver
CarPlay uses an iPhone for features such as directions, messages, and music through supported car hardware. Apple also describes wireless connectivity, Siri, and route guidance in an instrument cluster or head-up display where the vehicle supports those functions. Apple’s CarPlay overview

Android Auto follows the same broad phone-projection model: the phone provides useful apps that appear on the vehicle’s display. That can make the phone the source of the experience, while the car still supplies the screen and its controls.
CarPlay Ultra reaches further into the vehicle
CarPlay Ultra goes beyond displaying a phone-oriented interface on the center screen. Apple says it can provide content across driver displays, including gauges, and combine iPhone content such as maps and media with vehicle information such as tire pressure and advanced driver-assistance information. Selected vehicle functions may be available through onscreen controls, physical controls, or Siri, depending on the automaker’s implementation.

That deeper integration does not make the iPhone irrelevant or replace the vehicle’s own systems. Apple says CarPlay Ultra relies on the iPhone, while driving features continue to be powered by the built-in system for robust, smooth operation. Apple’s framing is that the experience is shared with automakers; its vice president of worldwide product marketing, Bob Borchers, said the goal was to make the in-car experience “more unified and consistent.” That is Apple’s positioning, not independent proof of a safety or quality advantage. Where built-in car software still fits
Vehicle-native software remains an active design path. Google built-in places Google technology in the vehicle infotainment system, and Google says the phone is optional. That is different from Android Auto, which depends on an Android phone to supply apps for the car screen. A built-in system may therefore offer a more self-contained experience, while phone projection can bring a driver’s familiar phone apps into a compatible car.

Google’s May 2026 announcement described an Android Auto redesign, video while parked on supported vehicles, Gemini functions, and new apps for Google built-in. Availability depends on the exact vehicle and phone
There is no single compatibility answer for all cars. Support can vary by make, model, model year, country, phone, and operating-system version. For example, Apple’s May 2025 announcement said CarPlay Ultra was available for new Aston Martin orders in the United States and Canada, and specified an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later at that time. This describes the initial announcement, not universal or permanent availability. Apple’s dated CarPlay Ultra availability details
Before choosing a vehicle or expecting a feature to work, check the automaker’s information for the exact vehicle and market, then confirm the phone and software requirements. A platform announcement or a feature appearing in a product description does not by itself establish support in every model or trim.

What platform-reach figures do—and do not—show
Google reported more than 250 million Android Auto-compatible cars and more than 50 car models with Google built-in in its May 2025 post. In May 2026, Google reported more than 250 million Android Auto-compatible cars and Google built-in in more than 100 models from 16 brands. These are company-published reach counts, not independent adoption or usage surveys; model counts are not counts of vehicles on the road. Google’s 2025 figures and Google’s 2026 figures
How to decide which approach suits you
- Start with your phone: If you want to use phone-supplied apps in the car, check whether the vehicle supports your phone’s platform.
- Check how much integration you want: A center-screen projection is different from an implementation that can use instrument displays or selected vehicle controls.
- Consider what must work without your phone: Google describes its built-in system as phone-optional; phone-dependent projection requires the compatible phone.
- Confirm the interaction options: Voice, steering-wheel or physical controls, touchscreens, and HUD or cluster displays vary by platform and vehicle.
- Verify specific features and rollout status: Announced features may be limited to certain vehicles, apps, countries, or staged releases.
Neither architecture is established as the universal winner for safety, privacy, satisfaction, or cost. The available official descriptions explain how the systems are designed and where they are intended to work, but do not provide an independent, controlled comparison of those outcomes. A smartphone mount may be an optional accessory for some setups, but it is not a stated requirement for CarPlay or Android Auto, which are designed to use a compatible vehicle display.
