Choose a smart washer only if you will use its connected features. Remote cycle control, phone alerts and guided settings can be genuinely useful, but Wi-Fi does not automatically mean better cleaning, lower bills or greater reliability. A standard washer is usually the better value when you want simple controls and do not need an app. Compare the individual models’ capacity, installation fit, EnergyGuide estimate and ENERGY STAR status before deciding.
What “smart” means on a washing machine
“Smart” generally describes a washer’s connectivity and software, not a universal performance class. A smart-capable model may connect to your home network and a manufacturer app. Depending on the model and market, the app can let you start or pause a supported cycle, check progress, receive completion or maintenance alerts, and select or customize certain cycles.
Manufacturer descriptions are model-specific. Samsung documents SmartThings Wi-Fi controls and phone alerts for supported washers, while Whirlpool describes remote management, cycle guidance and customization on supported smart-capable models. Those feature lists should not be treated as promises about every smart washer. Check the exact model’s specifications, compatible app, account requirements and supported network features before purchase.
A standard washer is not necessarily old-fashioned or inefficient. In this comparison, “standard” means a washer without the connected app and remote-management functions. It may still have modern automatic load sensing, multiple cycles and an ENERGY STAR certification. The meaningful question is whether the connected functions solve a problem you actually have.

The table describes categories, not a ranking. A well-chosen standard washer can be a better purchase than a poorly matched smart model, and a smart washer can be worthwhile when its specific features fit your routine.
Connectivity is separate from efficiency
Do not use an app, a touchscreen or a Wi-Fi logo as a shortcut for estimating running costs. ENERGY STAR certification is based on efficiency requirements, not connectivity. ENERGY STAR says certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers. That is a comparison of certified and regular machines; it is not a smart-versus-standard test.
ENERGY STAR also gives a full-size comparison of 14 gallons of water per load for a certified washer versus 20 gallons for a standard machine. This figure describes the program’s certification comparison and should not be read as proof that every smart washer uses less water than every non-smart washer. A non-connected washer can be ENERGY STAR certified, while a connected washer must still meet the applicable requirements to earn the label.
Read the EnergyGuide label
The yellow EnergyGuide label provides an estimated annual energy use and operating cost so you can compare similar products. It is an estimate for comparison, not a guarantee of your household bill. Look at the label on each candidate instead of assuming that a connected model will cost less to operate.
Use ENERGY STAR metrics when available
For models listed in the ENERGY STAR Product Finder, the Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) and Integrated Water Factor (IWF) add useful detail. A higher IMEF indicates greater energy efficiency; a lower IWF indicates greater water efficiency. Compare models in the same size and product category, because capacity and configuration affect meaningful comparisons.
ENERGY STAR says an average American family does about 300 loads of laundry per year. Your own load count, local utility rates, selected cycles and water temperature will determine how much any label difference matters.
When a smart washer is the better fit
You regularly forget completed loads
A completion notification can help if laundry often sits in the drum while you are working, caring for children or moving between floors. The benefit is the alert itself; it does not require the washer to clean differently.

The laundry area is inconvenient to reach
Status monitoring or supported remote management can be useful when the washer is in a basement, garage or another part of the home. Confirm the model’s remote functions and any safety or confirmation steps. “Remote control” may mean monitoring and selected commands rather than unrestricted control of every setting.
You want guidance for unfamiliar fabrics or cycles
Some manufacturer apps provide cycle guidance or customization. This may help a household that shares laundry duties or frequently washes items with different care requirements. Check the exact list of supported cycles; an app’s existence does not mean every cycle can be configured from a phone.
You can maintain the required connectivity
The connected value is highest when your home network, phone and account meet the model’s requirements. Verify the supported operating systems, network band or setup conditions stated by the manufacturer, and whether the app is available in your country. If those requirements are uncertain, treat the washer’s on-machine controls as the primary experience and value the appliance accordingly.
When a standard washer is the better fit
You want straightforward operation
If you prefer turning a selector, pressing a button and walking away, an app may add complexity without adding value. A standard washer keeps the appliance usable without learning a second interface or maintaining an account.
You will not use remote features
Paying for connectivity makes little sense if you always load, start and check the washer in person. Put the budget toward a capacity, door configuration, cycle set or efficiency rating that addresses your actual laundry needs.
You are buying for a location with unreliable connectivity
A smart washer’s core appliance functions may remain available from its controls, but connected services cannot provide their intended convenience without the required network and app support. If the location makes that support impractical, compare non-connected models on the same capacity and efficiency criteria.
You are replacing a washer on a strict budget
No current, universal smart-feature premium is established. Prices vary by model, retailer, region and promotions, so compare like-for-like models at the time of purchase. If a connected model costs more, require a specific benefit you will use often enough to justify that difference.

Capacity and installation fit come before connected features
Measure the actual installation space before comparing apps. Record the available width, height and depth, plus clearance for the door or lid, hoses and ventilation around the appliance. Check the location of water supplies, drain and electrical outlet, and confirm whether the model’s opening direction works in the room.
Then match capacity to your normal loads. A household that washes bulky bedding may benefit more from an appropriately sized drum than from remote notifications. A smaller household may prefer a capacity that avoids accumulating laundry while fitting the available space. ENERGY STAR’s consumer guidance treats capacity and installation location as core comparison points, not optional details.
- Measure the opening and the route from delivery point to the installation site.
- Check the manufacturer’s listed product dimensions rather than relying on a retailer’s rounded headline measurement.
- Allow for door or lid swing and for access to shutoff valves and the drain.
- Compare drum capacity with the size of your routine loads and any bulky items you wash.
- Confirm that the model is intended for your electrical, plumbing and market requirements.
How to compare two specific models
- Define the baseline. Write down the minimum capacity, maximum dimensions, opening type and cycles you need. This prevents a desirable app feature from distracting you from an installation problem.
- Check connectivity details. Read the manufacturer’s page for the exact model. Record supported remote commands, alerts, cycle guidance, phone operating systems, account requirements and regional availability.
- Check efficiency labels. Capture the EnergyGuide estimated annual energy use and operating cost. Record ENERGY STAR status and, where available, IMEF and IWF.
- Compare capacity and physical specifications. Confirm usable capacity, dimensions, door clearance and hookup requirements in the installation location.
- Compare current prices locally. Use the same retailer region, delivery terms and warranty assumptions. Do not infer a permanent smart premium from one sale price.
- Calculate the feature’s practical value. Name the situations in which you will use remote status, alerts or guidance. If you cannot name one, treat connectivity as a nonessential extra.
- Check support before ordering. Verify that the app is offered in your market and that the model, phone and home network are supported. Save the product page and label information for your records.
What the app can and cannot tell you
An app can expose information that is otherwise visible only at the washer, such as a cycle’s progress or completion. It may also provide supported recommendations or let you customize selected settings. Those functions are convenience features, not independent evidence of cleaning performance.
The app cannot substitute for the EnergyGuide label, ENERGY STAR listing or the physical specifications. It also cannot resolve an undersized drum, an unsuitable installation space or a mismatch between the washer’s cycles and your fabrics. Evaluate those fundamentals first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating “smart” as a performance rating
Fix: Separate the questions. Connectivity tells you about software and remote access. EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR information address efficiency. Capacity and cycle specifications address laundry fit. No single badge answers all three.
Mistake: comparing a large smart model with a small standard model
Fix: Compare similar capacities and configurations. A larger drum can change energy and water use, purchase price and the number of loads you run, making a direct feature comparison misleading.
Mistake: assuming every smart feature works everywhere
Fix: Read the exact model’s support page and confirm market, app, account and network requirements. Samsung’s and Whirlpool’s descriptions apply to supported products in their respective ranges, not to all connected washers.

There is two water inlets on the panel for connecting the hose to easily add water. With the simple control panel, this mini washer is easy to operate and you can get clean clothes in three steps.
- [Product Usage Tips] 1. Don't overload. Overload may cause the motor to turn on overheating protection. 2. Balance the spinner to prevent it from losing balance, hitting the inner walls, stopping work. 3. If the machine doesn’t drain, check that the water hose is not clogged or bent, which may prevent the spinner from working properly. 4. Make sure the drain height is less than 45 inches.
Mistake: budgeting from a single advertised price
Fix: Compare current local prices for equivalent capacity and efficiency, including delivery and installation terms. The available evidence does not establish a universal smart-washer premium.
Mistake: ignoring the non-connected controls
Fix: Make sure the washer’s physical panel provides the cycles and options you need. App availability, network changes or an account issue should not leave you unable to use the appliance’s essential functions.
Mistake: using certification figures as a smart-versus-standard promise
Fix: Keep the scope attached to the numbers. ENERGY STAR’s 20% energy and 30% water figures, and its 14-versus-20-gallon full-size comparison, distinguish certified washers from regular machines; they do not isolate the effect of Wi-Fi.
A practical decision rule
Start with this test: Can you name a recurring situation in which a supported connected feature will save time, prevent a missed load or make cycle selection easier?
- If yes, shortlist smart and standard models that meet the same capacity, installation and efficiency requirements. Buy the smart model only when its documented functions justify the price difference for your routine.
- If no, shortlist standard models first. You can still choose an ENERGY STAR-certified washer and compare EnergyGuide estimates, IMEF and IWF without paying for an app you will not use.
- If you are unsure, treat connectivity as optional and decide on the appliance’s physical controls, capacity, fit and labels. Those characteristics remain relevant regardless of network availability.
Limits of what can be concluded
Connectivity alone has not been shown here to improve cleaning, reliability or lifetime cost. Manufacturer feature sets, app requirements, prices and availability can change by model and market. The efficiency figures cited above are U.S.-oriented ENERGY STAR consumer guidance, so labels and certification systems may differ elsewhere. Check the current documentation and labels for the exact washer sold in your region.
The most defensible comparison is therefore model to model: first establish that each washer fits your room and laundry volume, then compare efficiency data and price, and finally decide whether the documented connected functions are worth having.
