The most effective smart-TV privacy changes are to disable Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) or its equivalent, turn off personalized advertising, restrict voice and microphone access, remove unnecessary apps, keep security updates enabled, and review accounts, consent and network permissions. These controls are usually in the television’s Privacy, Advertising, Apps or Security menus. Names and paths differ by model, operating-system version and region, so use the labels shown on your screen.
Work through the settings in that order. ACR can reveal what is shown through built-in apps, antenna input and, on some platforms, HDMI-connected equipment. Advertising controls limit profiling but do not remove every advertisement. Voice controls govern a different data stream, while app permissions and software updates protect the television from applications and known vulnerabilities.

Disable Automatic Content Recognition first
ACR identifies what is displayed so a platform can measure viewing, build recommendations or deliver targeted advertising. Roku states that its Smart TV Experience can collect what is watched and when it is watched from the TV antenna and devices connected to the television, including cable and satellite boxes. That means an HDMI-connected set-top box, game console or disc player may be within the scope of the feature, not just the television’s built-in applications.
Roku’s documented path is Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. Deselect Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) to withdraw consent. Roku describes the same withdrawal option in its User Privacy Policy. If your menu offers a separate choice called Use info from TV inputs, leave it off unless you have a specific reason to share input information.

Roku televisions and players
- From the Home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Privacy, then Smart TV Experience.
- Clear Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) and any option that permits information from TV inputs.
- Read the confirmation text and accept the change.
- Return to the privacy page after a restart to verify that the control remains disabled.
Roku’s wording is unusually explicit about antenna and connected-device coverage. Other platforms may describe the same function as viewing information, content recognition, smart-TV experience or a consent toggle rather than using the initials ACR.
Samsung televisions
Look in the television’s privacy, terms, advertising or viewing-information menus for Viewing Information Services or a similarly named control. Disable viewing-data collection separately from advertising personalisation; one switch does not necessarily turn off the other. Samsung’s menu can change with the television’s software version and country, so search the Settings menu for “viewing,” “privacy,” “advertising” and “terms” if the expected label is absent.
LG televisions
LG may call the feature Live Plus or present it as ACR-related consent. LG says ACR can process content-identification fingerprints together with device information, the content source (such as Live TV or HDMI), network information and consent settings. LG also says collection stops when ACR is disabled or consent is withdrawn. Check the privacy or Live Plus page and turn off every viewing-recognition or input-data option you do not need.

Turning off ACR does not make the television anonymous. A streaming application can still process information under its own privacy terms, and the TV may still need basic diagnostics, account data or network information to deliver a service. The change specifically withdraws the platform’s viewing-recognition permission; review app-level and account-level controls separately.
Separate personalised advertising from viewing-data consent
Open the advertising or privacy section after changing ACR. Disable personalised advertising, interest-based ads or ad measurement where the television offers those choices. Roku documents a limit-ad-tracking control in addition to its Smart TV Experience settings, illustrating why both pages need review.

Personalisation controls generally affect how an advertising system selects or measures ads. They do not guarantee an ad-free interface: free streaming channels and applications can still show adverts, and a service may use contextual information such as the programme currently playing. The Federal Trade Commission advises owners of internet-connected televisions and streaming devices to review privacy settings and permissions rather than accepting setup defaults.
Check for consent after firmware updates
A major software update can introduce a new consent screen or restore a default that was previously hidden. After an update, revisit the privacy and advertising pages, read any changed terms, and decline optional viewing or advertising permissions. Keep a note of the settings you selected so you can quickly compare the menu after the next update.

Restrict voice recognition and microphone access
Voice features are a separate privacy decision from ACR. A television can have viewing recognition disabled while still accepting a wake word, and it can have personalised advertising disabled while continuing to process a voice search. Turn off each voice function you do not use:
- Wake-word detection or “always listening” mode.
- Voice recognition or voice search.
- Microphone access for the TV and voice-enabled remote.
- Permission for individual apps to use a microphone.
The practical trade-off is direct: with microphone or voice access disabled, voice search and hands-free commands stop working, but button-based navigation remains available.
Samsung voice controls
Samsung states that its voice functions are enabled only after a user agrees to a separate Samsung Privacy Policy and Terms of Use during initial setup. Samsung also says voice commands are collected when the user makes a specific search request by activating the TV voice function. If you do not use voice search, withdraw that consent in the privacy or voice-assistant settings and disable wake-word listening if it is offered separately. If you keep voice search, avoid speaking passwords, payment details or other sensitive information into the remote.

Roku voice remotes
Roku provides microphone controls for voice-enabled remotes. Disable the microphone or voice feature in the privacy or remote settings when you do not need it. A remote with a physical microphone button or switch may still have a separate software permission, so check both the hardware and on-screen controls.

LG says supported models can include a dedicated hardware microphone switch. Switching that control off provides a physical way to prevent microphone use. LG also says speech-to-text processing begins when a supported voice interaction is activated, rather than continuously converting every sound in the room. Confirm the microphone switch position and turn off voice services in software if you want both hardware and software restrictions.
Review app permissions and remove unused applications
Every installed app expands the number of companies and code components that can communicate through the television. Delete apps you no longer use, especially trial services, duplicate players and applications installed only for a one-time event.
Google TV and Android TV
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then inspect the installed-app list.
- Open an app and review its permissions, storage and network-related controls.
- Revoke permissions that are not needed for the app’s purpose, then choose Uninstall for apps you no longer need.
- Open the Google Play Store and check for available app updates.
- In Settings > Apps > Security & restrictions, review security alerts and Play Protect status.
Google documents Play Protect privacy alerts for apps that can access personal information or violate policy. Do not install packages from untrusted sources merely because an app is unavailable in the official store; sideloaded software may bypass the platform’s normal screening and update process.
Other television platforms
Use the platform’s app-management or privacy page to inspect permissions, then uninstall anything unnecessary. The labels and granularity differ: some televisions show a permission list for each app, while others expose only account, advertising or network controls. If a permission cannot be revoked individually, the safer choices are to remove the app or avoid granting the permission during its next launch.

Keep firmware, apps and security checks current
Enable the manufacturer’s automatic software-update check and install updates from the television’s built-in update mechanism. Updates can patch vulnerabilities, fix privacy bugs and add clearer consent controls. There is no universal update schedule or guaranteed support period across television brands and models, so check the support page for your exact model when continued updates are important.
Verify an update safely
- Open Settings and find Support, System, About or Software Update.
- Run the built-in update check and read the version number and release notes if displayed.
- Install only firmware offered by the manufacturer for that model and region.
- Allow the television to restart fully; do not unplug it while the update is being written.
- Recheck ACR, advertising, voice and account-consent pages after the restart.
Keep applications updated through the official TV app store as well. An updated operating system cannot compensate for an abandoned or vulnerable application that still has access to your account or network.

Reduce account exposure
- Sign out of accounts that are not needed on the television, such as a guest’s streaming profile.
- Remove saved payment methods or purchase PINs that you do not use.
- Use a unique password for the TV-maker account and enable multi-factor authentication when available.
- Check the account dashboard for connected televisions and revoke devices you no longer own.
Signing out limits cloud access, but it does not automatically erase information already held by a service. Use the service’s account or privacy page if you need to delete a viewing history or profile.
Inspect consent and terms menus
Open the TV maker’s consent, terms or privacy dashboard and decline optional diagnostics, marketing and viewing-data permissions. Required processing may remain enabled because the television needs it to authenticate, deliver a requested channel or maintain the operating system. Read the description beside each switch instead of disabling a setting whose purpose is unclear.
Use network controls cautiously
A router or DNS filter can block telemetry or advertising domains for several devices at once, making it a model-independent additional layer. It is outside the television’s own settings and can interfere with sign-in, firmware downloads, programme guides, casting or ad-supported playback. If you use filtering, create an allow-list for essential update and streaming domains and test one service at a time so a blocked request can be identified and reversed.

Compare platforms by capability, not by menu names

Use these questions when comparing a new television or deciding whether to keep a particular platform. A familiar label is less important than the scope of the control and whether the platform lets you verify its current state.
Perform a final privacy audit
- Open the Privacy or Consent menu and record the current ACR, viewing-information and diagnostics choices.
- Open Advertising and disable personalised ads or limit ad tracking.
- Open Voice, Assistant or Microphone settings and turn off unused wake-word, voice and microphone features.
- Review each installed app, revoke unnecessary permissions and uninstall unused apps.
- Run the official software-update check and update applications through the official store.
- Inspect account sessions, saved payment information and connected-device lists; sign out where appropriate.
- Restart the television, then revisit the key pages to confirm the switches stayed disabled.
- Test essential functions such as live TV, HDMI devices, casting and streaming sign-in. If one fails, restore only the specific permission or network exception it requires.
Common problems and fixes
The setting is missing
Search Settings for the terms “privacy,” “advertising,” “viewing,” “ACR,” “Live Plus,” “voice” and “microphone.” A feature may be unavailable on a particular model, disabled in a region or moved after a firmware update. Consult the manual or support page for the exact model rather than applying instructions for a different television.
The switch turns back on
Check whether a setup wizard, account re-link or firmware update restored consent. Complete the wizard with optional data-sharing choices declined, restart the television and verify the menu again. If the control repeatedly resets, document the model and software version before contacting the manufacturer.
Voice search stopped unexpectedly
Re-enable only the voice permission you need, then test the remote. A microphone switch, depleted remote battery, missing app permission or declined voice terms can each prevent voice commands while ordinary button navigation continues to work.
An app stopped playing after network filtering
Temporarily disable the filter to confirm the cause. If playback returns, allow-list the service’s required domains or remove the filter for that television. Do not disable firmware updates to make a blocked application work; restore update access first.
