Yes—smart TVs commonly include HDMI input ports. You use them to connect game consoles, streaming players, Blu-ray or DVD players, cameras, computers and other compatible equipment. The number of sockets and the capabilities assigned to each one vary by exact model and regional version, so the television’s official specification sheet or manual is the authority for your set.

What an HDMI port does on a smart TV

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) carries digital video and audio from a source device to a television. A console, streaming player, disc player, camera or computer sends its output through an HDMI cable; the TV receives that signal through an HDMI input and displays the picture while playing the sound through its speakers or a connected audio system.

HDMI is separate from a TV’s built-in smart platform. Internet access and apps such as streaming services do not determine whether a set has HDMI, how many inputs it has, or which formats those inputs support. A television can have extensive smart features and still differ from another model in port count, refresh-rate support, audio-return functions or physical port placement.

HDMI inputs are for receiving signals. An HDMI socket marked ARC or eARC can also send television audio back to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver over the same cable. That audio-return capability is a feature of a particular HDMI connection, not a consequence of the TV being “smart.”

How many HDMI ports does a smart TV have?

There is no universal number. Port counts depend on the model, screen size, product year, market and sometimes the exact regional variant. Capabilities can differ between sockets on the same television, so counting openings is not enough when you need a high-refresh-rate console connection or an audio-return link.

Named model and source HDMI inputs ARC/eARC detail Other stated capability
Samsung QN95C specification sheet (approximately 2023) 4 eARC on one HDMI port 4K at 144 Hz and VRR listed on all HDMI ports
Samsung The Frame (2022) specification sheet 4 eARC on HDMI port 3 Not stated in the cited specification for the comparison here

These are examples, not an industry-wide specification. The QN95C’s four inputs and the Frame’s eARC assignment cannot be applied to every smart TV. Before buying or installing a set, check the exact model number on the manufacturer’s specification page or in its manual. Look for the number of HDMI inputs, the port identified for ARC or eARC, and the supported resolution and refresh rate for each input.

No reliable cross-market percentage establishes what share of all smart TVs have HDMI ports. The practical conclusion is that HDMI is common on current smart TVs, while the details that matter for your equipment remain model-specific.

Where to find the HDMI ports

Manufacturers generally group HDMI sockets on a connection panel at the rear or along one side of the television. The location is not standardized: a thin display may place some inputs on the side for easy access, while a wall-mounted set may put them on the rear or in a recessed panel.

  1. Look along the side edges and rear panel for a row of small, flat HDMI-shaped sockets.
  2. Check for printed labels such as “HDMI 1,” “HDMI 2,” “ARC” or “eARC.”
  3. If the sockets are not labeled, identify the model number and consult its manual or manufacturer support page. Sony cautions that HDMI ports may have no labels at all.
  4. Use the manual’s connection diagram to determine which physical socket supports the feature you need; do not assume that every input has identical capabilities.

On a wall-mounted television, avoid forcing a cable into a recessed connector or sharply bending it. If access is difficult, switch the TV off before rearranging cables and leave enough slack for ventilation and service access.

How to connect a console, streaming player or other HDMI source

The basic connection is the same for most HDMI sources, although menu wording differs by manufacturer.

  1. Turn off, or place in standby, the TV and the source device if the equipment manual recommends doing so.
  2. Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the source device’s HDMI output. A source normally has an output; do not use a socket labeled “HDMI in” on the source.
  3. Plug the other end into an available HDMI input on the TV, noting its number.
  4. Turn on both devices and wait for the TV to detect the signal.
  5. Press the TV remote’s Input, Source or similar button and select the HDMI number used in step 3.
  6. Set the source device’s output resolution, refresh rate or HDR option only after a picture appears, and stay within the formats listed for that TV input.

A black screen, “no signal” message or intermittent picture usually means the wrong input is selected, the source is not producing a compatible signal, a cable is not fully seated, or the chosen HDMI port does not support the requested mode. Test the source on another known-working input and consult both devices’ manuals before changing advanced settings.

ARC and eARC: sending TV sound to a soundbar or receiver

ARC means Audio Return Channel. It allows a compatible TV to send audio from its built-in apps, antenna tuner or an HDMI-connected source back to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver through an HDMI cable. eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) is the improved version and supports higher-quality audio transfer when both ends support eARC.

Sony describes eARC as an enhanced ARC connection carried over HDMI that lets high-quality sound pass through the TV to decoding equipment such as receivers and soundbars. The feature requires compatible equipment at both ends. If the TV supports eARC but the soundbar supports only ARC, the connection operates at ARC capability; a smart-TV interface alone does not add either feature.

ARC/eARC setup procedure

  1. Confirm in the TV manual which HDMI input is labeled ARC or eARC. On some sets the label is absent, so use the model’s connection diagram.
  2. Confirm that the soundbar or receiver has an HDMI output labeled ARC or eARC, not only ordinary HDMI inputs.
  3. Connect that TV port to the matching ARC/eARC port on the audio system.
  4. In the TV’s sound settings, choose HDMI ARC, eARC or a similarly named external-audio output. On the audio system, select its TV/ARC input.
  5. Enable HDMI-CEC if the manufacturer requires it for ARC/eARC control or detection, then power-cycle both devices if audio does not appear.
  6. For eARC data transfer, Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet. Treat that as a requirement for this eARC setup, not as a reason every smart-TV owner needs a new cable.

If there is no sound, verify that both devices support the same ARC or eARC level, that the cable is connected to the marked ports, and that the TV’s digital-audio format is one the receiver can decode. A television with an eARC socket cannot make a non-eARC soundbar accept eARC-only formats.

What HDMI-CEC does

HDMI-CEC is a control standard that lets compatible audiovisual devices communicate over HDMI. Depending on the equipment, it can provide power on and off, volume control, device-menu access and basic playback commands from one remote. Manufacturers may give CEC a brand-specific name in their menus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CEC is distinct from smart-TV apps and internet connectivity. Every participating device must support CEC, and the feature may need to be enabled on each one. Mixed-brand systems can work, but the available commands are determined by the devices’ implementations. If turning on CEC causes unexpected power switching or input changes, disable it on the device responsible or use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions.

How to compare HDMI connectivity when choosing a TV

Do not choose by total HDMI count alone. Match the TV’s documented ports to the equipment you will actually use.

  • Total HDMI inputs: Count current devices and leave room for one likely addition. A four-port set may still be inconvenient if one port is reserved for eARC and the others are hard to reach.
  • ARC/eARC location: Identify the exact port for the soundbar or receiver. The feature may be available on only one input.
  • Resolution and refresh rate per port: A specification may list capabilities such as 4K at 144 Hz or VRR, but confirm whether they apply to all ports or only selected ones.
  • Console, PC and receiver requirements: Compare the formats your devices output with the formats documented for the intended HDMI input.
  • Physical accessibility: Side-mounted sockets are easier to reach for temporary connections; rear sockets can produce a neater permanent installation.
  • Regional model number: Check the exact version sold in your country. A similarly named television can have a different port layout or specification in another market.

Save the manufacturer’s manual with your purchase records. It is the most reliable reference when a port label is missing or when a feature is described differently in a retailer listing.

Troubleshooting common HDMI problems

The TV says “No signal”

  • Verify that the source is powered on and its cable is connected to an HDMI output.
  • Select the matching HDMI input on the TV rather than relying on automatic detection.
  • Reseat both plugs, then try another HDMI input and, if available, another known-good cable.
  • Check the manual for the maximum resolution or refresh rate supported by that input and temporarily lower the source output if necessary.

Picture works but the soundbar is silent

  • Move the cable to the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled port and the audio system’s matching port.
  • Confirm ARC/eARC support on both devices and select the corresponding audio output in the TV menu.
  • Enable CEC if the manuals require it, then restart the TV and soundbar.
  • For eARC, use the cable type recommended by the TV manufacturer and select an audio format the receiver supports.

A console will not run at its expected refresh rate

  • Check the TV specification for refresh-rate and VRR support on the specific HDMI input in use.
  • Use the source’s display settings to select a mode documented as compatible.
  • Try another input only if the manual lists the same capability there; moving cables at random cannot add a feature a port does not support.

The ports are difficult to identify

Do not guess from their position. Locate the model number, open the official manual or support page, and match the diagram to the labels molded into the rear panel. Sony specifically notes that HDMI ports may be unlabeled.

Do you need a new HDMI cable?

Being a smart TV does not by itself require a replacement cable. Use a cable that supports the signal and feature documented for your equipment. Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet for eARC data transfer; follow that recommendation when setting up eARC, while ordinary HDMI connections should be judged by the devices’ stated requirements.

Replace a cable when it is damaged, too short to route without strain, or unable to carry the mode your manuals specify. A new cable cannot turn a standard HDMI input into an ARC/eARC port or increase a television’s number of inputs.

The practical answer for your particular television

Most smart TVs provide HDMI inputs, but only the exact model documentation can answer “how many,” “which port supports eARC,” or “will this console’s mode work?” Read the specification sheet and manual together, because a headline product description may list a total count without identifying per-port differences. Treat the named Samsung QN95C and The Frame configurations as model examples, not promises about another television.
