If your TV has a camera, closing its shutter or covering the lens blocks the camera’s view. But not every smart TV has a camera, and a lens cover does not necessarily disable the camera’s electronics, microphone, network connection, or other data collection. First identify the camera and the instructions for your exact TV model.
Does your smart TV have a camera?
Camera availability is model-specific. Samsung documents cameras on certain Smart TVs, while Sony BRAVIA Cam and LG Smart Cam are examples of external camera accessories for supported televisions. These examples do not establish how common cameras are across all smart TVs.
Look along the top edge or bezel for a lens, and check whether a camera retracts into the TV or connects as an accessory. Then consult the manual or support page for your exact model and market. Appearance and controls can vary, so do not assume that a small sensor is a camera or that instructions for another model apply.
How to cover or close the camera
Use the manufacturer’s built-in shutter or retraction mechanism when the TV has one. Follow the instructions for the specific camera and TV rather than forcing a lens or adding a cover that could interfere with the display.

- Samsung F Series: Samsung India’s instructions for specified F Series models say the camera retracts into the TV. Motion and face recognition are unavailable while it is retracted, but voice recognition remains available. The support instructions were last updated October 26, 2020, and are not universal Samsung guidance. Read Samsung’s F Series camera instructions.
- Sony BRAVIA Cam: Its sliding switch opens or closes the camera shutter. Sony says the shutter must be open for camera functions to work. Check the instructions for your supported TV and camera. See Sony’s BRAVIA Cam FAQ.
- LG Smart Cam: LG advises closing the Smart Cam’s private cover when it is not in use. Its support guide notes that images may vary by model. Read LG’s Smart Cam instructions.
If a compatible external webcam has no usable shutter, a webcam privacy cover may be an option. Check its fit and compatibility with that camera; no single accessory is established as compatible with every TV or webcam.
What a camera cover does—and does not do
A closed shutter or opaque cover prevents the lens from seeing the room. On some devices, closing or retracting the camera also makes camera-dependent features unavailable. For example, Sony says BRAVIA Cam functions require the shutter to be open; Samsung’s specified F Series guidance says motion and face recognition are unavailable with the camera retracted.

A physical cover alone does not prove the camera electronics are off, nor does it turn off a separate microphone. LG documents that Smart Cam has a built-in microphone and that, depending on the app, camera and microphone may have separate on/off functions. Check the camera and microphone controls independently in the relevant app or TV settings.

Sony’s help guide says camera-sensing images for supported models are not sent to the network and describes a control to clear data collected by the camera unit. That statement is limited to the camera-sensing functions and models covered by the guide; it should not be generalized to every camera function or manufacturer. See Sony’s camera-sensing help guide.

LG said in a corporate statement dated September 12, 2026, that its TVs do not continuously record or transmit users’ conversations, and described voice interaction as activated by a supported wake word or remote-control button. For a connected TV with a camera, a closed shutter is a simple way to block its view when you do not need camera features. It is not a substitute for reviewing the TV’s settings, app permissions, or privacy controls. The FTC’s connected-camera guidance recommends considering privacy before enabling remote camera access, keeping software updated, using strong unique passwords, and enabling available security features. - Use the exact model’s manual to find its camera, shutter, and microphone controls.
- Review whether camera-based features or apps are enabled, and disable ones you do not use where the TV allows it.
- Keep the TV software updated and secure accounts with strong, unique passwords.
- Think carefully before enabling remote camera access, especially in private spaces.
