The traffic type worth testing is multicast. Home-network discovery protocols such as UPnP/SSDP use multicast, including UDP port 1900 and the IPv4 group 239.255.255.250. If a switch or Wi-Fi access point is flooding that traffic, containing it can stop buffering. It is a conditional fix, not a universal cure: weak Wi-Fi, competing devices, inadequate throughput and ISP congestion can produce the same symptom.

What “multicast” has to do with a buffering TV

Ordinary streaming is usually unicast: one stream travels from the service to one device. Multicast is different. One packet can be replicated across a local network for multiple interested receivers. That is useful for device discovery and some television services, but inefficient handling can consume switch capacity or wireless airtime.

SSDP is the familiar example

Universal Plug and Play discovery uses the Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP). Microsoft Learn describes SSDP as a way to detect UPnP devices on a network. SSDP commonly sends UDP datagrams to 239.255.255.250:1900. A television, speaker, streaming box or phone may use this traffic to find another device, rather than to carry the video itself.

Why multicast can cause stalls even when your internet is fast

Switch flooding

Without correct multicast handling, a switch may send packets out of many ports instead of only to ports with interested receivers. A busy home network then spends local bandwidth processing traffic that most devices discard. NETGEAR explains that IGMP snooping lets a switch forward multicast intelligently and limit delivery to requesting ports.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Wireless airtime loss

Wi-Fi multicast is particularly costly. Access points may transmit multicast at a conservative basic rate so every associated client can receive it. RFC 9119 notes that multicast and broadcast traffic is generally sent at the slowest rate of connected devices. That airtime is unavailable to the TV’s video stream, even if a speed test to the internet looks excellent.

Why this is only one possible cause

Multicast congestion is a local-network problem. It does not prove that the ISP or streaming service is at fault, and it does not explain every buffering incident. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance also points to weak wireless signal, insufficient speed, other devices using bandwidth and congestion in the provider’s network.

Block versus contain: choose the least destructive test

Control What it does What it may preserve Main risk
IGMP snooping Tracks subscription messages and forwards multicast only toward interested ports. Requested multicast, including services that genuinely need it. Requires a managed switch or network equipment that implements snooping correctly; bad querier settings can still cause failures.
Unknown-multicast filtering Drops multicast that has no known interested receiver. Traffic with a valid subscription. Can break a service if the network does not learn membership as expected.
Broad multicast or SSDP block Prevents selected multicast packets from crossing a router, VLAN or interface. Little or none of the blocked discovery traffic. Can disable casting, UPnP/DLNA discovery, IPTV channels or smart-home controls.

Start with containment rather than a blanket drop. Google Cast Help states that UPnP, also called multicast in this context, is required to discover Cast-enabled devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Blocking it can therefore make casting disappear even if video playback improves.

How to test whether multicast is the culprit

  1. Reproduce the problem. Note the TV, application and time. Determine whether one app, one television or every stream buffers.
  2. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. Connect the TV directly to the router or switch, or use its wired adapter. If buffering improves on Ethernet, investigate radio conditions and wireless multicast behavior before assuming an ISP fault. A wired result does not by itself prove multicast is responsible.
  3. Remove competing traffic. Pause cloud backups, game downloads and other high-bandwidth streams. Sony specifically recommends checking whether other devices are consuming capacity and whether provider congestion changes the symptom.
  4. Inspect network state. On managed equipment, look for multicast counters, IGMP group memberships, dropped packets and the presence of an IGMP querier. A packet capture can confirm UDP destination port 1900 and reveal other multicast groups. Capture only on a network you administer.
  5. Enable IGMP snooping temporarily. On a managed switch, open the multicast or IGMP section, enable snooping for the affected VLAN, apply the change and retest the same stream. If the switch asks for a querier and no router provides one, use the vendor’s documented querier option for that VLAN; do not enable conflicting queriers on multiple devices.
  6. If necessary, apply a narrow restriction. Test an SSDP or multicast rule only on the relevant interface, VLAN or device group, rather than blocking all multicast everywhere. Record the previous setting so you can restore it immediately.
  7. Test dependent features immediately. Try Cast setup, device discovery, UPnP/DLNA playback, IPTV channels and smart-home controls. Restore the old configuration if any required feature fails.

Do not confuse discovery multicast with IPTV multicast

Traffic Typical role Blocking guidance
SSDP/UPnP multicast Finds devices and services on the local network; commonly UDP 1900 to 239.255.255.250. Block only as a scoped diagnostic. Expect casting and DLNA discovery to stop.
Provider IPTV multicast May carry the television video itself from an ISP or managed TV service. Do not block casually. Channels can fail even though ordinary streaming still works.
Unicast streaming A separate stream from a service to one TV. Multicast rules will not fix congestion on this path.

If buffering continues after the multicast test

Check the TV’s radio conditions

  • Move the access point or TV away from walls, cabinets and sources of interference.
  • Test the other Wi-Fi band if your equipment offers both; a cleaner band can matter more than the advertised link rate.
  • Check whether the TV reports a weak signal or repeated reconnects.

Check capacity and service health

  • Run a speed test at the TV or on a nearby device during the failure, not only when the network is idle.
  • Stop simultaneous uploads and downloads, then retest the same title at the same quality.
  • Restart the modem, router, access point and TV in the order recommended by their manufacturers.
  • Try another streaming application. If only one service fails, its account, app or regional service path may be the issue.

Check for an equipment-specific defect

Old firmware, an overloaded access point, duplex errors on a wired link or a failing Ethernet cable can imitate multicast trouble. Update firmware where the vendor supports it, inspect link status and replace suspect cables before changing several network variables at once.

How to roll back safely

Before changing a switch, router or access-point rule, save or photograph the existing configuration and write down the VLAN, interface and device scope. After each change, test one repeatable stream and the discovery features your household uses. If casting, DLNA, IPTV or smart-home controls fail, disable the test rule or snooping change, restore the saved configuration and reboot only the affected network device if required. A rollback that restores discovery but not playback indicates that multicast was not the sole cause.
