Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the television’s ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT socket—not an HDMI port. Open the TV’s Live TV or channel setup, choose Antenna or Air as the tuner mode, and run an automatic scan. If the scan finds few or no stations, move the antenna to a higher or more open position, then scan again. Menu names and available broadcasts vary by TV model, software version, and location.
What you need before you start
The basic setup has three parts: an over-the-air antenna, a compatible lead or adapter, and a television with a built-in tuner. Most smart TVs sold for the US market include a tuner for free over-the-air broadcasts, but the socket and menu wording differ between models. Keep the TV’s model number and the antenna’s instructions nearby if the connectors or menu are unclear.
Identify the antenna connector
A conventional antenna uses a round, threaded 75-ohm coaxial connector. The cable may be permanently attached to the antenna or supplied separately. The television socket is usually marked ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT. TCL’s external-antenna instructions describe connecting a 75-ohm coaxial cable to the ANT/CABLE input; that particular setup notes that the cable is not included.
Recommended Free Tools
Some older antennas use a flat 300-ohm twin-lead rather than a round coaxial plug. Do not force that flat lead into the TV. Use the appropriate 300-ohm-to-75-ohm adapter specified by the antenna or television instructions. An adapter intended for a different connector can produce a loose connection or fail to fit.

| Part | What to look for | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Antenna lead | Round threaded coaxial plug | Connect it directly to the TV’s ANT-family socket. |
| Older antenna lead | Flat 300-ohm twin-lead | Use the specified 300-ohm-to-75-ohm adapter before connecting to the TV. |
| Television input | ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT | Use this tuner input, not HDMI, USB, or a composite-video socket. |
| Optional cable | 75-ohm coaxial cable long enough to reach the TV | Buy one only when the antenna package lacks a suitable cable or the supplied lead is too short. |
Understand which TV source you are setting up
A directly connected antenna uses the television’s internal tuner and its antenna or Live TV source. A cable or satellite receiver is different: that box normally connects through HDMI, and you watch it by selecting the corresponding HDMI input. Scanning the antenna tuner does not configure a box, and configuring a box does not scan antenna stations.
Connect the antenna: the physical procedure
- Locate the correct socket. Look around the rear or side panel for ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT. If the set has more than one antenna-related socket, follow the label and the TV manual rather than guessing.
- Attach the cable. Push the coaxial connector onto the socket and turn the threaded collar until it is secure. Tighten it by hand; do not use pliers, which can damage the connector. For a twin-lead antenna, install only the adapter specified for that lead and TV.
- Check the cable route. Make sure the lead is not pulled sideways at the connector and that its length allows the antenna to remain in the position you intend to test. A cable that barely reaches the socket can move the antenna whenever the TV is adjusted.
- Place the antenna for the first scan. For an indoor model, begin in a high, open position, often near a window. Keep it away from places where furniture, metal objects, or the TV itself block the intended direction. There is no universal best position; the useful location depends on the broadcasts available at your address and the construction around it.
- Open the TV tuner. Press Home or Input and choose Live TV, Antenna TV, or the equivalent source. Some sets open a setup prompt automatically the first time you choose Live TV.
Do not expect channels to appear merely because the cable is attached. The TV must search its tuner and save the stations it detects.
Run an automatic channel scan
Menu labels differ by brand, model, region, and software version. The wording below describes the function to find, not a universal button sequence.

- Open the TV’s Settings, Channels, Broadcast, or Live TV settings.
- Choose Channel scan, Auto scan, Auto tuning, or Channel search.
- When the tuner asks for a signal type, select Antenna, Air, or Broadcast. Do not select Cable unless you are connected to a cable-TV feed.
- Start the automatic search and leave the antenna connected and undisturbed until the progress indicator reaches the end. Interrupting the scan can leave the channel list incomplete.
- Save or accept the results if the TV presents a confirmation screen. Return to Live TV and use the channel controls to verify the stations.
TCL describes the purpose of this operation in its Android TV support guidance: “A channel scan allows your TCL Android TV to find and save free over-the-air channels available through a connected antenna.” That description applies to the function, while the exact path and labels on your set may differ.
What if the TV asks for a country or region?
Select the country or broadcast region that matches where the TV is being used. Regional settings can change the tuner’s channel plan and the labels shown during setup. If the television was imported or previously used in another region, consult its manual before choosing a setting at random.
What the scan result means
A result showing stations confirms that the TV can communicate with the antenna at that position. A small list does not establish a fixed reception range or indicate that the antenna is defective; it may reflect local broadcast availability, building materials, antenna orientation, or the position used for the scan. If the list is empty, work through the checks below before replacing equipment.

Improve reception when channels are missing
Reception can change significantly after a small move. Treat antenna placement and scanning as a pair: move the antenna, then run the automatic scan again so the TV can detect and save stations available from the new position.

- Move an indoor antenna higher, such as to a high shelf, while keeping the cable securely attached.
- Try a position near a window or another open area. Avoid assuming that the closest window is best; test more than one practical location.
- Keep the antenna clear of large obstructions and allow the lead to reach without strain.
- Run a complete automatic scan after each meaningful position change.
- Record which position produces the most stable set of stations, then secure the antenna so it is not shifted accidentally.
Do not use a promised channel count or advertised distance as proof that a location will work. The broadcasts available at your address and the conditions between the antenna and transmitters determine the result. A local reception map can help identify which stations are expected in your area, but it cannot replace testing the antenna in the room or mounting location you plan to use.
Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete scan
| Symptom | Checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The TV reports no channels | Confirm the coaxial connector is fully seated and the TV is set to Antenna or Air rather than Cable. | Move the antenna higher or nearer a window and run another automatic scan. |
| Only some expected stations appear | Check the antenna’s position, cable reach, and local broadcast availability. | Test another open position, then scan again. Do not assume a universal channel total. |
| The scan option is unavailable | Verify that Live TV or the antenna source is selected instead of an HDMI input. | Return to the TV tuner source and open its channel settings. |
| Channels disappeared after moving the antenna | The saved list reflects the earlier scan position. | Run a new automatic scan after the move. |
| The connector does not fit | Determine whether the antenna uses coaxial cable or 300-ohm twin-lead. | Use only the adapter specified for the older lead and the TV input; never force a connector. |
| The picture is unstable or breaks up | Look for a marginal position, a strained cable, or an antenna blocked by nearby objects. | Try a higher, more open location and rescan. If the issue follows the cable, inspect the cable and connections. |
| A cable or satellite box works, but antenna channels do not | The box and the built-in tuner use separate inputs and setup procedures. | Select Live TV and scan the ANT-family input independently of the HDMI-connected box. |
Check the cable before changing the antenna
Unscrew and reconnect the coaxial fitting by hand, checking that it is aligned and firmly seated. Examine the lead for a crushed section or a connector that turns without tightening. If the antenna package did not include a cable, use a suitable 75-ohm coaxial cable that reaches the TV without tension. A longer cable alone does not guarantee more stations; its purpose is to let you place the antenna where reception is better.

Confirm that you are scanning the right tuner
Televisions often offer separate scans for Antenna and Cable. Selecting Cable while an antenna is attached can produce an empty or misleading result. Likewise, a TV showing an HDMI source will not display the antenna’s channel list until you return to Live TV or the antenna source.
When local availability is the limiting factor
A scan can save only broadcasts that reach the antenna strongly enough for the tuner to recognize. Check local station availability for your address before concluding that the TV or antenna has failed. The result may differ between rooms, floors, and outdoor mounting points, so document the position that produced each scan rather than relying on a single test.

| Decision | Indoor starting point | Outdoor or elevated option |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | High, open position near a window when practical | Use only where the installation location and antenna instructions permit it |
| Space and cable | Requires a nearby position and enough lead to reach the TV | Requires a route from the mounting point to the TV and suitable weather-rated installation details from the antenna maker |
| Connector | Usually a 75-ohm coaxial connection; verify before buying | Usually a 75-ohm coaxial connection; verify the supplied lead and any required adapter |
| Expected channels | Depends on local broadcasts and the tested room position | Depends on local broadcasts and the tested mounting position |
Use a reception map to learn which local broadcasts may be available, then test the antenna in the position you can actually maintain. Avoid purchasing solely because a package advertises a fixed distance or channel number; those figures cannot guarantee performance at an individual address.
When a separate coaxial cable is worthwhile
Buy a 75-ohm coaxial cable only when the antenna does not include a suitable lead, the existing cable cannot reach the intended position, or its connector is damaged. Match the cable’s connectors to the antenna and TV. If the antenna uses a flat twin-lead, obtain the correct adapter instead of replacing the lead with an incompatible plug.
Antenna input versus HDMI input
The two inputs serve different sources:
- Antenna input: receives the radio-frequency signal from the antenna. The TV’s internal tuner scans and stores over-the-air stations.
- HDMI input: displays video and audio from an external device such as a cable or satellite receiver. You select the HDMI number rather than scanning the TV’s antenna tuner.
If both are connected, use the TV’s Input or Source control to switch between them. A channel scan changes the antenna channel list; it does not alter the HDMI device’s channels or subscription service.

After the scan: managing everyday viewing
Return to Live TV to browse the saved stations. If your TV offers favorites or channel-editing controls, use them after confirming the scan is complete. The exact options depend on the model and software version. If you later move the antenna, expect to repeat the automatic scan; the previous list represents the signal conditions at the earlier position.
Keep the antenna cable connected while testing. Disconnecting it and reconnecting it does not substitute for a scan, and changing from Antenna to Cable can make a correctly saved antenna list appear to be missing. When troubleshooting, make one change at a time—source, tuner mode, position, then scan—so you know which action changed the result.
A concise setup checklist
- Find the TV socket labeled ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT.
- Match the antenna lead to that socket; use the specified adapter for 300-ohm twin-lead.
- Place an indoor antenna high and in an open position, starting near a window when practical.
- Open Live TV or Antenna TV rather than an HDMI source.
- Start an automatic channel scan and select Antenna or Air.
- Wait for the scan to finish and save its results.
- If channels are missing, check the cable and tuner mode, reposition the antenna, and scan again.
- Use local broadcast information to set realistic expectations for your address.
Following those steps connects the antenna to the TV’s tuner and gives the television the information it needs to build a local channel list. The remaining variable is reception at your particular location, so placement and a complete rescan are the first remedies when the list is incomplete.
