On a Galaxy tablet, look for Smart Switch in the Samsung folder on the Apps screen, or open Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch. Samsung lists both locations on its Smart Switch page.
Find Smart Switch on your Galaxy tablet
- Open the Apps screen and look for the Samsung folder.
- Open that folder and tap Smart Switch.
- If you do not see it there, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch. You can also search Settings for “Smart Switch.”
Samsung says Smart Switch is preinstalled on supported Galaxy devices. If neither route works, check whether your tablet model is compatible; Samsung says the app can also be downloaded from Galaxy Store or Google Play on supported devices. Menu labels can vary by model and software version, so the path may not look identical on every tablet. See Samsung’s Smart Switch page.
Choose how to move or restore content
Once Smart Switch is open, the right method depends on the devices involved, how much content you are moving, and what connections or storage they support.

| Wireless | You want to transfer between compatible devices without a cable. | Both devices must support the selected wireless workflow; available content can vary by device and operating system. |
| USB cable | You are moving a large amount of content and both devices support a compatible wired connection. Samsung says wired transfer is relatively faster for large transfers. | Check both devices’ ports and compatibility. A charger may not be available while the devices are connected, so charge them first. |
| External storage | You want to back up selected content to a microSD card or USB storage, then restore it on a Galaxy device. | Storage capacity and tablet compatibility vary. A USB OTG adapter may be needed to connect USB storage. |

Back up and restore with external storage
Samsung’s external-storage workflow lets you back up selected content to a microSD card or USB storage and then connect that storage to the new Galaxy device for restoration through Smart Switch. A USB OTG adapter may be required, depending on the storage and tablet. The tablet’s supported storage type and capacity are model-specific. See Samsung’s external-storage instructions.
What Smart Switch may not move
Smart Switch can move a range of content, including contacts, call history, photos, videos, and documents, but it does not transfer every item. Supported content varies with the source device, operating system, and transfer method. In particular, content synchronized with another service—such as a calendar synced with Google or Office—may need to be retrieved by adding that account on the new device rather than by relying on Smart Switch. Samsung describes these limits in its tablet setup guidance and Smart Switch information.

What you need before transferring
- You do not need to buy an accessory just to find or open Smart Switch.
- A compatible USB data-transfer cable is only relevant if you choose a wired transfer; confirm both devices’ ports and compatibility first.
- For external-storage transfers, use compatible microSD or USB storage, and an OTG adapter if the tablet needs one.
- Charge both devices before a wired transfer, since charging during the connection may not be possible.
