A keypad lock can be electronic without being smart. In U.S. residential terminology, an electronic lock uses an electronic control or credential, such as a PIN; a smart lock adds wireless communication with another device, often for app-based control or monitoring. Smart locks are therefore one kind of electronic lock in this comparison—but the labels are used inconsistently in product listings, so check how a specific model works.

What is the difference between a smart lock and an electronic lock?

The key distinction is connectivity. A non-connected electronic lock can accept a PIN or another local credential without linking to a phone or home network. A smart lock can communicate wirelessly with another device, potentially enabling remote status checks, control, or access management. The U.S. Department of Commerce describes residential digital locks this way in a 2023 Federal Register notice: Federal Register notice on internet-connected electronic devices.

“Electronic lock” is also a broad consumer label. It can refer to keypad locks, card readers, electromechanical hardware, or connected smart locks. For a useful comparison, look past the name and identify the access method and whether the lock communicates wirelessly.

Is a keypad lock the same as a smart lock?

Not necessarily. A keypad lock that stores and checks codes locally can be electronic without being smart. Some smart locks also have keypads, but add a wireless connection to an app, phone, hub, or other system. Schlage, for example, lists keypad and touchscreen electronic keyless-entry products separately from its smart-lock range; individual products still need to be checked for connectivity. See its smart-lock product information and electronic keypad-lock information.

How do smart locks connect, and do they need Wi-Fi?

Smart locks can use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or low-power mesh protocols such as Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Thread. A particular model may support one or more of these, and connectivity requirements vary. A smart lock does not necessarily need Wi-Fi: some functions may work over Bluetooth or through a compatible hub. Check whether the exact model needs a hub, which network or Wi-Fi band it supports, and whether remote access depends on an internet connection, an account, or a service.

A non-connected keypad lock, by definition in the government’s residential description, has no wireless connection. That can suit someone who wants code entry and local operation without app or network management. A connected model may be a better fit for someone who wants phone-based monitoring or control and is comfortable with the model’s account and network dependencies.

What features can a smart lock add?

Depending on the model and its required app or service, a connected lock may provide remote locking or unlocking, status monitoring, customized access codes, lock history, alerts, or integration with a home system. These are model-specific features, not a guarantee that every smart lock offers all of them.

More features can mean more decisions about who controls the account, how guest codes are issued and removed, and whether access history or alerts are useful to you. Before choosing, consider who will manage the lock and how you will revoke access when a guest, household member, or service provider no longer needs it.

Are smart locks more secure than keypad locks?

Neither label establishes that a lock is physically stronger or safer. A smart lock’s connectivity features do not replace a suitable lock, correct installation, or a sound door and frame. Likewise, a keypad does not by itself indicate a particular level of physical security. Compare evidence for the exact product and its hardware category, not the marketing label.

ANSI/BHMA standards cover different kinds of hardware and tests. For example, A156.2-2022 covers bored and preassembled locks and latches, while A156.25-2023 covers electrified locking devices. A156.33-2024 addresses methods for verifying manufacturer battery-performance claims; it does not imply compliance with other applicable A156 standards. The ANSI/BHMA standards catalog explains that laboratory results can differ in actual use because of installation, maintenance, door and frame construction, and environmental conditions. It also states: “No lock can provide complete security by itself.”

Use these checks when comparing products:

  • Confirm the door type, thickness, backset, existing preparation, handing, and lock type. Follow the manufacturer’s template and installation instructions.
  • Look for a relevant ANSI/BHMA certification and performance grade for the specific product category. A “smart” claim is not a grade.
  • For connected models, verify the wireless protocol, network requirements, hub needs, app compatibility, and whether remote features require an account or service.
  • Review how codes are created, shared, removed, and monitored, and which phone or account controls the lock.
  • Check battery warnings and replacement requirements, plus any mechanical or other fallback access.
  • For fire-rated doors, shared buildings, egress-sensitive sites, or commercial access control, confirm applicable codes and product listings with a qualified professional. Fire-door assemblies require appropriate testing and listing for that use.

What happens if a smart lock loses power or internet?

Power and connectivity are separate issues. A network outage can interrupt remote features, but what remains available depends on the lock’s design and the way you are trying to operate it. A depleted battery is a different problem. Check the exact model’s low-battery warnings, replacement procedure, and fallback method before installation rather than assuming that every electronic lock has a physical key.

The battery duration is Schlage’s estimate, not an independent test or a guarantee for every usage pattern. Product details are on the Schlage Encode BE489 page.

Which type should you choose?

  • Choose a non-connected keypad lock if you want code entry and local operation without app-based remote management.
  • Consider a smart lock if phone-based monitoring, remote control, or integration matters to you and the model’s network, app, and account requirements are acceptable.
  • For either type, prioritize door compatibility, appropriate security evidence, correct installation, credential management, power planning, and a workable fallback.

The distinction is also reflected in sales history, though the figure is not current market share: the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that smart locks made up about two-thirds of residential digital door locks sold in the United States in 2021. That historical U.S. figure does not establish a 2026 or global share.
