If your smart-lock battery is dead, first identify the exact lock model. The safe way in is either that model’s mechanical key override or its documented exterior emergency-power contacts. Several keypad locks accept a 9V alkaline battery while you enter a code; keyed models may unlock with the physical key. These procedures are not interchangeable.
Do not pry the lock or assume a flat battery has left the door unlocked. After you get inside, install the battery chemistry and number of cells specified for your model, then verify normal locking and unlocking.
What to do before trying anything
- Read the model name. Look at the interior battery cover, exterior escutcheon, packaging, installation paperwork or your purchase record. A Kwikset 905, Kwikset Obsidian, Yale Keyless Connected and Schlage keypad lock use different emergency procedures.
- Inspect the outside of the lock. Check for a conventional key cylinder and for two metal emergency-power contacts. Only use contacts that the manufacturer identifies as emergency terminals.
- Get the required credential. A key override needs the correct physical key. An emergency-power procedure normally needs a valid user code or master code; a dead battery does not replace that credential.
- Plan for a non-destructive fallback. If the documented method for your model does not work, stop and contact the manufacturer or a local locksmith. Forcing the escutcheon can damage the lock and the door.
A lock can remain in its last state when its batteries are exhausted. Kwikset says its Premis, Aura, Obsidian and Halo products remain in the last known state, so a dead battery does not automatically retract the bolt or make the door safe to open. See Kwikset’s backup-power guidance.

This table is a decision aid, not a universal standard. A similar-looking lock can have a different terminal location, code sequence or key rotation.

Opening a lock with a mechanical key cylinder
Schlage keypad deadbolts
For the BE365, FE575 and FE595 products covered by Schlage’s support article, insert the matching key and turn it 90 degrees clockwise. Do not apply the 270-degree lever motion to a deadbolt; the two operations are different.

The cited FE575 and FE595 lever instructions specify a 270-degree key turn. Keep the key aligned with the cylinder and use the model’s documented direction rather than forcing it when resistance is felt.
If the key is missing
Schlage recommends contacting a local locksmith when immediate access is required and the key is unavailable. A locksmith can verify ownership and use a non-destructive entry method appropriate to the door. Do not drill or pry the lock based on a procedure for another model.

A 9V battery is an emergency power source only for locks whose documentation explicitly identifies 9V terminals. It is not a universal accessory for smart locks. Use a fresh 9V alkaline battery and keep the contacts engaged for the entire sequence specified by the manufacturer.
Kwikset 905: exact sequence
- Hold both terminals of a 9V alkaline battery against the two terminals below the keypad.
- Wait for three short beeps.
- Keep the battery firmly in place while entering the user code.
- Continue holding the battery to the terminals until the door unlocks.
- Only remove the battery after the unlock action has completed.
Kwikset states that if contact is removed before unlocking, you must re-enter the code. The battery is supplying temporary power; it is not replacing the lock’s installed cells.

Kwikset Obsidian: touchscreen sequence
- Touch a 9V battery to the terminals beneath the touchscreen.
- Wait for the screen to illuminate.
- Enter a valid user code.
- Wait for the motor to retract the deadbolt.
- Once inside, replace the internal batteries immediately.
The Obsidian sequence is separate from the 905 sequence. Do not assume that a touchscreen lock uses the keypad timing or beeps described for the 905.
Yale Keyless Connected: bottom terminal
- Insert a 9V battery into the emergency terminal at the bottom of the device.
- Enter the master code.
- Press the star button.
These steps come from Yale’s Middle East English support page for Keyless Connected. Product names and emergency procedures can vary by country, so check the support page for the exact regional edition installed on your door.
When the 9V attempt fails
Recheck that your model’s manual calls the contacts emergency terminals and that you are using the required code. For the 905, removing contact before the unlock step requires the code to be entered again. If the documented sequence still produces no response, do not keep experimenting with other batteries, polarity or keypad combinations; contact the manufacturer or a locksmith.
What a dead battery does—and does not—tell you
A flat battery does not prove that the bolt is retracted. Kwikset’s Premis, Aura, Obsidian and Halo products are documented as remaining in their last known state after battery exhaustion. The door may therefore be locked, unlocked or otherwise unchanged from its previous position.
There is no manufacturer-established warning-to-failure interval that applies to every smart lock, and the cited support pages do not provide a population failure rate. Treat the first low-battery warning as the replacement point instead of trying to calculate how many days remain.

Replacing the installed batteries after entry
Use the exact chemistry and count
Battery requirements differ by model. Do not tell every owner to install the same AA, lithium or rechargeable cells. Read the lock’s manual or the label inside the battery compartment for the chemistry, voltage and number of cells. August’s support guidance is model-dependent and advises replacing the complete applicable set together; see August’s battery-replacement instructions.
Replace the set, not just the weakest cell
When a model uses multiple cells, install a matching set at the same time. Mixing old and new cells or different chemistries can produce uneven voltage and another low-battery condition. The 9V battery used for emergency terminals is not a substitute for the lock’s internal battery set.
Restore power promptly
Kwikset specifically says to replace the internal batteries immediately after using Obsidian’s emergency terminals. For any model, close the battery cover securely after installing the specified cells so the lock returns to its normal powered state.
Verify operation before leaving
- Use the manufacturer’s normal method to unlock the door.
- With the door open, operate the lock and confirm that the bolt or latch moves fully.
- Test the lock again from the outside while the door remains open, then relock it normally.
The manufacturers cited here do not prescribe one universal post-replacement test sequence, so use the exact operating and programming instructions for your model.
How to prevent the next lockout
Learn your lock’s low-battery signal
Warning behavior is model-specific. Schlage says BE365, FE575 and FE595 locks flash the Schlage Button red three times before green after a valid access code when batteries are low. At critically low power, the button blinks red even before a code is entered. Schlage Touch models use a red battery indicator that flashes after unlocking for a low battery and blinks when depletion is critical. These signals are examples, not a universal smart-lock language. Check the indicator pattern for your own model and replace the batteries at the first warning rather than waiting for a critical alert.
Keep the right replacement set available
Store the chemistry and number of cells listed for your lock where you can reach them. A generic pack marked “smart-lock batteries” is not enough unless it matches the model’s requirements. Replace all cells in the applicable set together.
Carry a compatible emergency battery only when appropriate
A 9V alkaline battery is sensible to keep on hand if your lock’s official instructions identify 9V emergency contacts. It will not help a model that has no such terminals, and it does not replace a mechanical key for a keyed lock.
Maintain a real backup route
- If the lock has a key cylinder, keep a working key accessible to trusted household members, but not exposed outside the home.
- If it is keypad-only, record the documented emergency-power procedure and ensure the required user or master code is available to authorized users.
- For Kwikset Kevo, Kwikset recommends access to a backup key; do not rely solely on the electronic function.
- Periodically confirm that the key turns or that the emergency terminals and code procedure are understood. Perform any check with the door open so an unsuccessful test cannot trap you outside.
Comparing backup options when choosing or assessing a lock

When comparing locks, evaluate whether the fallback can be reached from outside, what warning appears before failure, and which battery chemistry and quantity the lock requires. A lock with a backup route you can actually use is more practical than one whose emergency feature has never been tested or documented.

Common mistakes and the safer correction
Trying a generic internet trick
Problem: Applying a 9V procedure to a lock that has no emergency contacts, or turning a key the wrong amount, can waste time or damage hardware. Correction: Match every step to the exact model and its manufacturer documentation.

Removing the emergency battery too soon
Problem: On the Kwikset 905, breaking contact before the unlock step means the code must be entered again. Correction: Keep both terminals connected through the complete unlock action.
Assuming the door unlocked itself
Problem: Battery exhaustion can leave the lock in its last state. Correction: Treat the door as locked until you have used the documented key or emergency-power method.
Replacing only one cell or choosing a convenient chemistry
Problem: A mismatched set can trigger another low-battery condition. Correction: Install the specified chemistry and a complete matching set together.

Waiting for a critical warning
Problem: The remaining runtime after a warning is not universal or guaranteed. Correction: Replace batteries at the first model-specific low-battery indication.
When to call for professional help
Contact the manufacturer when the model is unclear, the emergency contacts do not respond, or the code sequence in the manual fails. Contact a local locksmith when the key is missing, the cylinder will not operate as documented, or urgent access is required after the supported methods have failed. Keep proof of occupancy or ownership available if a locksmith requests it.
Do not pry, drill or dismantle the lock simply because another brand’s procedure worked for someone else. A non-destructive professional entry is safer for the door, frame and lock, and the manufacturer can tell you whether the lock needs repair after the battery event.
