Neither launcher is a universal customization winner. Smart Launcher is the better fit if you want automatic app organization, integrated widgets and feeds, adaptive layouts, and a more opinionated interface. Nova Launcher is the better fit if your priority is a conventional Android home screen with precise subgrid placement, drag-to-create folders, drawer groups, and familiar manual control.
The practical choice is a feature-by-feature decision. Check the controls you actually use, distinguish stable features from beta announcements, and test the launcher on your own Android phone or tablet before moving your daily setup.
The fundamental difference: two different ideas of customization
Smart Launcher and Nova Launcher both let you replace the default Android launcher, change gestures, arrange icons, use widgets, and apply visual themes. They do not organize those controls in the same way, however. Smart Launcher says it rebuilt the home-screen experience around its own workflows. Nova has generally aimed to extend the stock Android launcher rather than replace its familiar interaction model.

That distinction matters more than a simple feature count. A Nova user who expects Smart Launcher to reproduce every grid, folder, and gesture behavior may find the switch disorienting. A user who wants the launcher to sort applications and provide more of the surrounding interface automatically may find Nova too manual. The right question is not “Which has more settings?” but “Which launcher’s model matches how I want to find and place things?”

Why Nova is stronger for exact positioning
Nova’s documented subgrid positioning is the clearest advantage for users who treat the home screen like a precisely measured canvas. Subgrid controls let you place icons and widgets between the larger grid lines instead of being limited to broad row-and-column positions. This is useful when you want a widget aligned exactly with a wallpaper element, a dock icon centered under a particular control, or several differently sized widgets to share a visual edge.
Nova also follows the familiar Android pattern of placing items directly on the home screen and building folders by dragging one icon onto another. If you already use that workflow, the learning curve is small. The trade-off is that precise manual arrangement requires more of your attention: you decide where items go, how pages are divided, and which drawer groups to maintain.
Why Smart Launcher is stronger for flexible widgets and adaptive layouts
Smart Launcher’s comparison says it does not have Nova’s subgrid positioning, so it is not the obvious choice for users who need Nova-style micro-placement. It does allow free widget resizing, which can be more useful if your priority is changing a widget’s overall footprint quickly rather than nudging it through a fine grid.

Smart Launcher’s layout philosophy is more adaptive. The launcher describes independent arrangements for different screens, and its December 23, 2025 wrap-up discussed layouts for foldables, tablets, screen orientations, and aspect ratios. That approach can prevent a single phone layout from being stretched awkwardly when the device opens, rotates, or presents a different display shape.
Choose based on the kind of control you use
- Choose Nova when exact icon coordinates, subgrid alignment, and conventional drag-and-drop placement are non-negotiable.
- Choose Smart Launcher when automatic adaptation and freely resized widgets matter more than reproducing Nova’s grid mathematics.
- If your setup contains many overlapping widget sizes, test both launchers with the actual widgets you use; the launcher’s advertised capability does not guarantee identical behavior for every widget.
Folders, app-drawer organization, and finding apps
Smart Launcher’s automatic organization
Smart Launcher differentiates itself with an automatically sorted app drawer. Instead of requiring you to classify every new installation immediately, its drawer is designed to organize applications for you. That can be valuable if you install many apps, regularly forget where an app was placed, or prefer browsing by category rather than maintaining a hand-built folder tree.
Its Smart Search extends discovery beyond installed-app names. The comparison describes searches for shortcuts, files, calendar events, contacts, and more. For a user who wants one search surface for several kinds of Android content, that is a broader workflow than opening a drawer and scanning icon groups.
Smart Launcher creates folders through a menu rather than Nova’s documented drag-icons-together gesture. That is not inherently worse, but it is a real workflow change for anyone who routinely makes folders while arranging a page.

Nova’s manual groups and familiar folders
Nova’s FAQ documents app-drawer groups and the conventional method of creating a home-screen folder by dragging icons together. This is a good fit when you want complete control over category names, order, and membership. A manually curated drawer can be more predictable than automatic sorting for specialized collections, such as work tools, travel apps, or testing utilities.
Nova’s official Nova 8.1 page also describes Smart Folders and Nova 8.1 Cards. That announcement explicitly labels version 8.1 as an early beta, so those features should not be treated as guaranteed stable behavior. Confirm the current release channel and test the features you need before rebuilding your setup around them.
Which drawer is better for you?
- Automatic discovery: Smart Launcher has the stronger documented case.
- Predictable manual taxonomy: Nova’s drawer groups and folder workflow are the safer match.
- Cross-content search: Smart Launcher’s documented Smart Search is the more ambitious option.
- Beta experimentation: Nova 8.1 features may appeal to early adopters, but their status must be checked in the current build.
Gestures, navigation, and device-specific behavior
Both launchers support gesture customization, but their gesture systems are not interchangeable. Smart Launcher states that its gestures differ from Nova’s and that some gestures do not have direct matches. A backup import can therefore reproduce parts of your arrangement without reproducing the muscle memory you built around Nova.
Nova’s FAQ also warns that gesture navigation depends on Android and the device maker. Third-party launchers can behave differently from the manufacturer’s default launcher, especially around edge swipes, the back gesture, the home animation, and the recents transition. These differences are configuration- and device-dependent rather than evidence of a universal speed or reliability winner.
Test the gestures that affect your day
- Set the candidate launcher as the default home app.
- Test the system back gesture from the left and right edges in the apps you use most.
- Swipe up for Home and swipe up-and-hold for Recents several times from different apps.
- Try the launcher’s custom gestures for notifications, search, app drawer, and screen locking if those actions are part of your routine.
- Repeat the tests after rotating the device or opening a foldable, if applicable.
If one gesture feels unreliable, do not infer that the entire launcher is poorly optimized. Check the Android navigation mode, manufacturer settings, accessibility services, edge-protection settings, and any gesture assigned by another app.
Widgets, feeds, icon packs, and visual themes
Smart Launcher’s integrated visual system
Smart Launcher’s comparison lists built-in widgets, a customizable news feed, blurred user-interface themes, and integration with Icon Pack Studio. These features make the launcher feel like a broader visual environment rather than only an app-grid replacement. The integrated approach can reduce the number of separate tools you need to configure when you want matching typography, colors, icon treatment, and feed placement.
The feed is also a workflow decision. Readers who like seeing news or other updates inside the launcher may prefer having that surface available as part of Smart Launcher’s design. Readers who want a minimal home screen can disable or ignore those elements, but should verify how much of the interface remains active in their chosen configuration.

Nova and Google Discover
Nova’s FAQ says Google Discover integration requires a separate companion tool. Discover itself is controlled by Google, so the launcher does not determine every aspect of the feed’s content, ranking, or availability. If Discover is central to your home-screen routine, account for the extra component and test it after changing launchers rather than assuming the experience will be identical to the stock launcher.
Nova remains a strong choice for users who prefer assembling a visual system from a conventional launcher, icon packs, widgets, and manually arranged pages. The cited materials do not establish a universal advantage in widget performance or rendering speed, so visual preference should be tested with your actual widgets and wallpaper.
Foldables, tablets, rotation, and multiple layouts
Smart Launcher is the clearer choice when one device presents genuinely different screen contexts. It says it supports independent layouts for different screens, and its 2025 year-end post described layouts for foldables, tablets, screen orientations, and aspect ratios. That means you can design a compact cover-screen arrangement and a different expanded-screen arrangement instead of forcing one page to serve both.
The practical benefit depends on your hardware and habits. On a conventional phone that rarely rotates, adaptive layouts may be less important than subgrid positioning. On a foldable or tablet, maintaining separate layouts can prevent oversized gaps, misplaced widgets, and a dock that feels wrong after a screen change.
The cited Nova documentation does not establish an equivalent set of independent-layout controls. That is not proof that Nova cannot behave acceptably on a particular device; it means you should validate the exact phone, tablet, or foldable rather than assume feature parity.

Smart Launcher reported adding Nova backup import in 2025. Import can save time, but it is a starting point, not a promise of a one-click clone. Smart Launcher’s own comparison warns that its workflows do not exactly mirror Nova’s, and the publisher says not every Nova feature has an exact Smart Launcher match.
Prepare a recoverable setup
- In Nova, create and save a current backup using Nova’s backup function.
- Record anything that a launcher backup may not contain, such as widget-specific settings, third-party companion tools, wallpapers, and system navigation preferences.
- Make a short inventory of the gestures, drawer groups, folders, and widgets you use every day. This turns “the layout feels wrong” into a concrete checklist.
Import and inspect
- Install Smart Launcher from the official Android app distribution channel and set it as the default launcher when prompted.
- Use Smart Launcher’s Nova backup import option if it is available in your installed version.
- Walk through every home-screen page, dock position, folder, and widget rather than assuming the import is complete.
- Recreate items that depend on Nova-only behavior, especially subgrid placement, Nova-specific gestures, or drawer groups that do not map directly to Smart Launcher’s organization model.
- Open Smart Launcher’s app drawer and verify that automatic categories place your important apps where you expect them.
- Test Smart Search with a shortcut, file, calendar event, and contact if those are part of your routine.
Keep Nova available while evaluating
Do not delete the Nova backup or uninstall Nova immediately. Keep the original launcher available until you have confirmed that calls, messaging, navigation, work authentication, widgets, and gesture navigation all behave correctly. If the imported result is unsuitable, you can restore Nova while you revise the Smart Launcher layout without starting from zero.

Paid features, subscriptions, and changing terms
Nova’s FAQ says Prime includes features such as notification badges, removes ads, and is available as either a yearly subscription or a lifetime purchase. The reviewed materials do not establish current regional prices, so check the purchase screen associated with your Google account before treating either option as a current cost.
Smart Launcher’s Nova-user FAQ described a 14-day refund policy and said that its then-announced version 7 would be a free update with the license carried over. Those are dated product terms, not a guarantee of today’s purchase or upgrade policy. Confirm the current license language, refund window, and what is included in the edition you are installing.
Do not choose a launcher solely because a feature appears behind a paywall. First identify whether the feature changes your daily workflow: notification badges, ad removal, advanced placement, feeds, or multiple layouts can have very different value depending on how you use the phone.
Stable features versus beta announcements
Release status is especially important in this comparison. Smart Launcher’s comparison article is dated July 8, 2025. Its December 23, 2025 year-end post discussed Smart Launcher 6.6 and said the Google Play rollout was delayed during review at that point. That was a historical rollout note, not a statement about current availability.
Nova’s official Nova 8.1 page calls the release an early beta and describes Cards, Nova Now, and Smart Folders. Treat those details as beta capabilities until the current release notes or app build show otherwise. A beta feature may change its controls, disappear from a stable channel, or behave differently across devices.
Before relying on any feature, check the version installed on your device, the launcher’s current release notes, and whether the feature is marked stable, beta, experimental, or dependent on a separate companion. This is particularly important when a feature controls app organization: changing its behavior after you build a large folder system can create unnecessary cleanup.

Pick Smart Launcher when most of these statements are true
- You want the app drawer to organize applications automatically.
- You want one search surface for apps plus shortcuts, files, calendar events, and contacts.
- You value built-in widgets, a customizable feed, blurred themes, or Icon Pack Studio integration.
- You use a foldable, tablet, rotation-heavy workflow, or multiple aspect ratios and want independent layouts.
- You are willing to learn a launcher-specific folder and gesture workflow.
- You prefer flexible widget sizing over Nova-style subgrid placement.
Pick Nova when most of these statements are true
- You need precise subgrid positioning for icons and widgets.
- You want to create folders by dragging icons together.
- You prefer manually maintained app-drawer groups and page organization.
- You want a conventional stock-like launcher workflow with extensive placement control.
- You rely on Nova’s existing gesture assignments and do not want to retrain them.
- You are comfortable evaluating beta features separately from the stable core.
Do not decide from marketing claims alone
Neither set of reviewed materials establishes a universal performance winner. Battery impact, animation smoothness, gesture reliability, widget rendering, and memory behavior can vary with Android version, manufacturer software, hardware, launcher settings, feed services, and the number of active widgets. The only meaningful performance comparison for your purchase is the behavior of the two launchers on your own device.

A practical side-by-side test
- Capture your baseline: note your current launcher, Android navigation mode, number of home pages, daily widgets, dock contents, folders, and gestures.
- Rebuild one representative page: include the most demanding widget, a folder, a frequently used gesture, and the wallpaper style you normally use.
- Test discovery: find five apps through the drawer, then search for a shortcut, file, calendar item, and contact where supported.
- Test organization: create a folder, move an icon, resize a widget, and rotate or change screens if your device allows it.
- Test recovery: restart the phone and confirm that the launcher, widgets, feed, and default-home setting return normally.
- Record friction: write down every action that required an unfamiliar menu, an extra companion, or manual repair. Compare the friction with the benefit of the launcher’s distinctive features.
This test avoids judging a launcher by screenshots. It measures whether the exact actions you perform repeatedly are faster, clearer, and more reliable.
Common pitfalls and how to fix them
“The imported Nova layout looks wrong.”
Import cannot create a perfect one-to-one translation when the launchers use different grids, folder workflows, gestures, and drawer models. Recheck widget sizes, recreate folders that depended on Nova behavior, and place the most-used apps manually. Keep the original Nova backup so you can reverse the experiment.
“My gesture no longer does the same thing.”
Smart Launcher says some gestures differ from Nova’s and have no direct matches. Reassign the closest available action, or use Android’s system navigation for that task. Also test whether the device manufacturer’s gesture-navigation mode is intercepting the edge swipe.

Smart Launcher’s automatic sorting is intentionally different from Nova’s manually maintained groups. Search for the app first, then inspect the category rules and adjust the launcher’s organization options where available. If strict categories matter more than automation, Nova’s drawer groups may be a better fit.
“Discover or the feed is missing.”
Nova’s Google Discover integration requires a separate companion tool, and Discover is controlled by Google. Verify that the companion is installed, the account is signed in, and the current launcher version supports the integration. For Smart Launcher, check whether the feed is enabled and whether the current edition includes the relevant feature.
“A feature I read about is not available.”
Check whether you are looking at a beta announcement, a dated comparison, or a feature limited to a particular version. Nova 8.1 was described as an early beta, while Smart Launcher’s 2025 rollout notes were historical. Compare the installed build and current release information before rebuilding your setup around a feature.
“The phone feels slower after switching.”
Do not assume the launcher alone is responsible. Compare the same wallpaper, widgets, feed settings, icon pack, animation scale, and navigation mode on both launchers. Disable optional feeds or heavy widgets temporarily, restart the phone, and repeat the same home, drawer, and gesture actions. The cited materials do not support a universal speed verdict.
