For most people who only need boiling water, a regular electric kettle is the better-value choice. A smart-capable or temperature-control kettle becomes worth considering when you will repeatedly use selectable temperatures, scheduled heating, or a keep-warm function. The word “smart” is not a reliable specification, however: some models have advanced controls without remote operation, while others use an app only for firmware updates.
Judge the exact model and your daily routine rather than paying for the label. The Fellow Stagg EKG Pro, for example, offers variable temperature, scheduling and hold functions, but Fellow says its updater app cannot control the kettle or its settings. Cuisinart’s UK support catalog lists both a SmartElite temperature-control kettle and a Traditional Kettle, illustrating that these are distinct product categories rather than a guarantee that every “smart” kettle behaves the same way.
What “smart kettle” means in practice
There is no single industry specification for a smart kettle. A listing may use the term for a kettle with precise temperature selection, a timer or schedule, a hold-temperature mode, an app connection, or simply a digital display. Those features have different value.

#1 Best Overall
- Smart Voice & App Control: Govee electric kettle supports Bluetooth or WiFi connection, which is more stable and faster than kettles that can only be connected through Bluetooth, as the control range is not limited by distance. You can Schedule a time to boil your water.
- 4 Easy Presets & Keep-Warm Control: Govee smart kettle allows you to brew coffee and tea like a pro, with an app that lets you set your precise desired temperature from 104 °F to 212 °F. In addition, the Keep-Warm function automatically maintains water temperature for a full 2 hours. Make Electric Gooseneck Kettle your optimal brewing partner.
- Rapid Boil: 1200w quickly heats 0.8L water in only 3-5 minutes to help you enjoy a cup of coffee in no time. This electric kettle features a ready tone that beeps three times when the water reaches the preset temp, which you can turn off on the app.
- Precision Pour: The long gooseneck spout design has a powerful but precise stream for an optimal pour overflow rate. The pour over kettle's balanced body build and counterbalanced handle provide a sturdy grip, encouraging a slower pour.
- Built for Taste and Safety:Made of 304 food-grade stainless steel, Govee electric tea kettle comes with an NTC temperature sensor that automatically shuts off when the water reaches the desired temperature. The electric kettle with Boil Dry Protection will automatically shut off when the water dries out.
- Target-temperature control: You select a temperature instead of heating all the way to a boil. This is the feature most relevant to tea, coffee and other drinks that benefit from different water temperatures.
- Scheduling: The kettle can prepare a heating routine for a repeated time, if the model supports that function.
- Keep-warm or hold: The kettle maintains a selected temperature for an adjustable period or in an adjustable mode.
- Connectivity: A phone app may provide remote controls, status information or only firmware updating. These are not interchangeable.
Do not infer remote control from an app listing. In its Stagg EKG Pro and Pro Studio Edition Gear Guide, Fellow states: “Please note: you aren’t able to control your kettle or its settings via the Fellow Updater app at this time.” The app is optional and is used for firmware updates, not for starting a boil or changing the kettle’s settings.
Smart kettle vs. regular electric kettle at a glance
| Question | Smart-capable or temperature-control kettle | Regular electric kettle |
|---|---|---|
| What it is designed to do | Heat water with additional controls such as a target temperature, scheduling or hold mode, depending on the model | Heat water for ordinary boiling with a simpler control set |
| Temperature choice | Available on models that specify variable or precise temperature control | Usually centered on boiling rather than selecting a drink-specific temperature |
| Scheduling and hold | Available on some models; Fellow lists both for its Pro products | Not the defining feature of a traditional kettle |
| Phone app | Model-specific; an app can be limited to firmware updates | Generally not part of the basic category |
| Best reason to buy | You will use repeatable temperatures, a schedule or temperature holding | You mainly want hot or boiling water with fewer controls |
| What is established about price | A current, comparable premium is not established | A current, comparable premium is not established |

When a smart kettle is worth buying
You prepare drinks at different temperatures
Variable temperature is valuable when “hot” is not specific enough for your routine. If you regularly prepare several kinds of tea, pour-over coffee or other drinks that call for different water temperatures, selecting a target can make the process repeatable. The benefit is control and consistency, not an assumed reduction in energy use.
Check how the kettle sets and displays temperature, the available range and the measurement units on the exact regional model. Fellow lists precise temperature control on its EKG Pro line, but its product information does not establish one universal range for every smart kettle. A product described only as “smart” may not offer the control you expect.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou have a stable morning or work routine
Scheduling matters when the same heating task occurs at a predictable time. A scheduled kettle can fit a routine in which water is prepared before you reach the kitchen. It is less useful when your wake-up time, drink choice or water quantity changes from day to day.

Confirm what the schedule actually triggers. A listing may describe delayed heating, a clock-based routine or a preset; those behaviors are not necessarily identical. Fellow lists scheduling for its Pro products, but Fellow’s documentation does not establish that every model can be started remotely from a phone.
You need water to remain ready
A hold or keep-warm mode is useful if you pour several drinks over a period and want the water maintained at a selected temperature. Fellow lists adjustable hold modes for its Pro products. Look for the hold duration and temperature behavior in the manual: “hold” can mean maintaining a target setting, not repeatedly boiling the water.
Only pay for this function if it replaces a real repeated action. If you pour one cup immediately after boiling, a hold mode adds little to your routine.

You value repeatability more than simplicity
Advanced controls can reduce guesswork, but they also add settings to learn. A smart-capable kettle is a reasonable purchase when you will use those settings often enough to justify the extra interface and the need to verify model-specific behavior.

When a regular electric kettle is the better choice
You normally boil water once and use it immediately
If your requirement is simply “heat water for a drink or cooking,” a traditional electric kettle addresses that need without making you choose a target temperature or configure a schedule. Fewer controls also mean fewer opportunities to select the wrong mode.
Your schedule is unpredictable
A fixed schedule has little value when you do not know when you will need hot water. In that case, manual heating is more direct, and the smart features may remain unused.
You do not need a hold function
Keeping water warm is a convenience for repeated pours, not a universal requirement. If you use the full batch promptly, prioritize the basic controls you will actually operate.
You are comparing value without a documented premium
Cuisinart’s UK manual catalog lists a SmartElite Temp Control Kettle 1.7L alongside a Traditional Kettle; that establishes product examples, not a current price difference. Compare the exact local models and their warranties before deciding that the additional controls justify the cost.

How the app claim changes the buying decision
Connectivity is the easiest feature to misunderstand. An app icon, Bluetooth reference or “updater” name does not prove that you can start heating from another room.
For the Fellow EKG Pro example, the manufacturer’s documentation makes the limitation explicit: the Fellow Updater app updates firmware and does not control the kettle or its settings. Treat that as a firmware-maintenance feature, not remote operation. If remote start is essential to you, look for a manual that explicitly describes remote controls, account requirements, pairing steps and the conditions under which the kettle can operate unattended. Do not rely on the generic word “smart.”
Product examples and what they demonstrate
| Example | Documented characteristics | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Fellow Stagg EKG Pro | Named variable-temperature kettle with scheduling and hold functions; an optional updater app is used for firmware | The updater app does not currently control the kettle or its settings; no independent performance test or energy saving is established |
| Cuisinart SmartElite Temp Control Kettle 1.7L | Listed in Cuisinart UK’s kettle manual catalog as a temperature-control model | A universal smart-kettle feature set, current price or independent comparison with another model |
| Cuisinart Traditional Kettle | Listed in the same catalog as a traditional-kettle example | A specific current price, capacity comparison beyond the catalog listing or measured efficiency result |
These examples show why the product page and manual matter more than the category name. Regional editions, availability and controls can differ, so verify the model number sold where you live.

- Write down your actual routine. Count how often you need different temperatures, a delayed start or water held ready. Use a typical week rather than an imagined future routine.
- Select the one feature that would change your behavior. If no feature would, choose a regular electric kettle. If variable temperature is the reason, compare temperature-control models rather than assuming every connected kettle has it.
- Read the exact specification and manual. Confirm target-temperature control, scheduling, hold behavior, capacity, controls and regional voltage or plug details. “Smart” alone is insufficient.
- Separate app functions from kettle functions. Find out whether the app controls heating, reports status, changes settings or only installs firmware. For the Fellow EKG Pro, it is the latter.
- Compare the complete purchase cost locally. Include the current price, delivery, warranty and any required accessories. The product materials do not establish a universal smart-kettle premium.
- Make the energy claim testable. Do not assume a smart kettle saves money. No like-for-like energy-use test or demonstrated operating-cost saving is established here. If energy matters, compare the manufacturer’s rated power and your own measured usage under the same fill volume and heating target.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every smart kettle is remotely controllable
Fix this by looking for explicit remote-control instructions, not an app badge. The Fellow updater limitation is a concrete example of why the distinction matters.
Best Value
- Smart Control: Connect your electric kettle to the app to schedule and adjust the temperature anytime. When boiled you will receive a notification. You can also voice control the electric tea kettle via Alexa & Google Assistant for added convenience.
- Versatile Infuser: The tiny hole of the infuser prevents leaf spill out. Brew loose tea leaves or tea bags with the infuser. Use it to heat water, make a coffee, or prepare food without the infuser.
- Customized Brewing Program: 4 preset temperature from 180 °F to 212 °F for green tea, oolong tea, coffee and black tea. Temperature accuracy of 1°F makes this product ideal for beginners and professionals.
- Digital Screen Display: The base has an LED screen to view target and real-time temperatures. 1500 W power heats 1.7 L water in 8 minutes and insulates for up to 2 hours. Convenient app control to adjust insulation time.
- Prioritizes Safety: Made of BPA-free food-grade 304 stainless steel for safety and durability. Auto shut-off and boil-dry protection. To prevent scaling and corrosion, wash regularly and empty after each use.
Paying for temperature control without using it
Fix this by listing the drinks you make and the temperatures you would actually select. If you always boil water, a regular kettle is likely to serve you better.
Treating scheduling as an automatic convenience
A schedule is useful only when the timing is predictable and the model’s schedule behavior matches your routine. Confirm how it handles a missed or changed schedule before buying.
Assuming “hold” means unlimited readiness
Check the adjustable duration and the target-temperature behavior. A hold mode is a defined operating setting, not proof that water remains ready indefinitely.

Using a product example as a universal recommendation
The named Fellow and Cuisinart products illustrate feature categories. They are not independent head-to-head test results. Confirm current specifications, local availability and price for the exact model you intend to purchase.
What is and is not established about savings
Fellow’s and Cuisinart’s manufacturer materials identify features, but they do not provide an independent comparison of electricity use, operating cost or demonstrated savings between a smart-capable kettle and a regular electric kettle. They also do not establish a current, comparable price premium across the categories.
That means the economic case should be based on your use of the controls, not on a promised payback. A schedule or hold mode may be convenient; convenience is different from a measured reduction in energy or money. If you need a quantified cost decision, gather current local prices and measure both kettles under the same volume, starting-water temperature and target.
Bottom line for different buyers
- Choose a regular electric kettle if you mainly boil water, use it immediately and prefer the simplest controls.
- Choose a temperature-control kettle if selecting repeatable temperatures is central to your drinks and the exact model documents that control.
- Choose a model with scheduling only when a predictable routine makes the schedule genuinely useful.
- Choose a model with hold when you make several pours and will use temperature maintenance often.
- Do not pay extra for an app on assumption. Verify whether it controls heating or only updates firmware; the Fellow EKG Pro updater app currently does not control the kettle or its settings.
For a basic boiling job, the regular electric kettle is the sensible default. A smart-capable kettle is worth buying when a specific, documented control solves a problem you encounter repeatedly—not because the word “smart” appears on the box.
