To set up smart home security and privacy, agree on what the household is comfortable connecting, secure the router, then harden each device and account. Review privacy settings—especially for voice assistants and cameras—and keep software and device access current. No internet-connected device is completely secure, but these steps can reduce avoidable risks.

1. Agree on devices and check their support

Before buying or installing a connected device, discuss it with the people who live in the home. Consider whether it has a camera, microphone, location awareness, or cloud recording, and whether those features are acceptable to everyone who could be affected. As NIST computer scientist and cybersecurity researcher Julie Haney puts it, “If it’s in your home, everyone should agree to its use.”

Check the manufacturer’s current documentation for security features, privacy controls, how updates are delivered, and how long support is expected to last. Look for recent complaints or reports of breaches, but do not assume a device is low-risk just because it is not a computer; a thermostat or doorbell can still affect household privacy and security.

NIST’s April 2, 2025 guidance notes that nothing connected to the internet is completely secure. The practical goal is to choose devices you can configure and maintain, and to limit the access and data collection you do not need.

2. Secure the router before adding devices

Your router connects smart devices to the internet and to one another, so make it the first setup task. Haney describes it as “a key part of your cybersecurity plan.” Use the router maker’s or internet provider’s instructions because menu names and available settings differ by model.

  1. Use current Wi-Fi encryption. Choose WPA3 Personal if available; WPA2 Personal is also a suitable option. The FTC says, “WPA3 is the newer — and best — encryption available, but both will work to scramble your information.” If an older router still offers only WPA or WEP after you check for a software update, the FTC advises considering a replacement.
  2. Replace default credentials. Set a unique Wi-Fi password and a separate, unique administrator password. Change default network or administrator settings rather than leaving them in place.
  3. Update router software. Install available updates, enable automatic updates if offered, and check that they are being applied.
  4. Check protective settings. Confirm that the firewall is on. The FTC also recommends turning off remote management, WPS, and UPnP because convenience features can weaken security. Before disabling any of them, check whether a household device or service depends on that feature.
  5. Finish the admin session. Log out of the router administrator account after making changes.

For more detail, see the FTC’s December 2022 home Wi-Fi guidance. NIST’s September 10, 2024 router report provides additional context on cybersecurity requirements for consumer-grade routers.

3. Decide whether smart devices need a separate network

A guest network or a separate network for smart devices can limit which devices share your primary Wi-Fi credentials. NIST’s Haney recommends keeping sensitive computers separate from devices such as smart doorbells. A separate network is a defense-in-depth measure, not a guarantee that a device cannot be compromised or communicate beyond that network.

The FTC describes a guest network as a way to avoid sharing the primary Wi-Fi password with guests and to help contain a guest device that may have malware. Router features vary: some models offer a guest network but not full separation between device groups. Check the router documentation to understand what its network options actually isolate. If you disable WPS, UPnP, or remote management, verify first that the household does not rely on them for a needed function.

Blink Outdoor 4 – Wireless smart security camera, two-year battery life, 1080p HD day and infrared night live view, two-way talk. Sync Module Core included – 3 camera system
  • Outdoor 4 is our most affordable wireless smart security camera yet, offering up to two-year battery life for around-the-clock peace of mind. Local storage not included with Sync Module Core.
  • See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.

4. Inventory and secure each device and account

Use the router’s connected-device list to identify what is on the network. It may be labelled “connected devices,” “wireless clients,” or “DHCP clients.” Match each entry to a device you recognize; investigate unfamiliar entries rather than assuming they are harmless.

  • Change default device usernames and passwords. Use a different, strong password for each device or account; do not reuse passwords.
  • Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) or two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever it is offered.
  • Install device firmware updates and update the phone app used to control each device.
  • Enable available security features, such as encryption or passcode lockout.
  • Disable remote administration and other features you do not need.
  • Disconnect devices you no longer use.

The FTC’s August 2022 guidance for internet-connected devices covers these basic protections. Keep an inventory that records each device, its account, and whether it still receives updates; it makes unfamiliar connections and abandoned equipment easier to spot.

5. Review privacy controls by device

Security settings protect access; privacy settings govern what a device collects, keeps, or shares. Review these controls separately for each product, because options differ by model and may change after software updates.

Voice assistants

Voice assistants listen for commands and may send recordings to the manufacturer. Review recording retention and sharing settings, then disable purchasing or other functions the household does not need.

All connected devices

Check whether the device sends information to the manufacturer, how long audio or video is retained, and who can access it. Turn off unneeded microphones, cameras, location features, or other functions where the device allows it. If a device is no longer in use, disconnect it rather than leaving its account and network access active.

6. Give cameras extra scrutiny

Security cameras can expose live feeds and archived video, so treat their configuration as a high-sensitivity task. Before buying, check whether account information, live streams, and stored video are encrypted, and how to enable any available encryption. Confirm the details in documentation for the specific model rather than assuming all cameras from a maker behave alike.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a unique account password, update camera software and its controlling app, and enable two-factor authentication for the cloud account if available.
  2. Review access logs for unfamiliar IP addresses or activity at unusual times.
  3. Before enabling remote viewing, consider whether the camera captures a private area and whether access from outside the home is necessary.
  4. If you share a feed, use controls that limit who can watch and when.
  5. Consider placing cameras on a separate network if the router supports it.

The FTC’s camera security guidance addresses protecting home security cameras. The same care applies to indoor cameras: convenience does not make remote viewing necessary in every room.

7. Maintain the setup and retire unsupported devices

Enable automatic updates where possible, then periodically confirm that updates are actually being installed. Revisit device and account privacy settings, check the router’s connected-device list, and remove access for devices or accounts the household no longer uses. When equipment changes owners, remove associated accounts or reset the device before handing it over.

If an older device no longer receives security updates, consider replacing or retiring it. Haney’s NIST advice is direct: “If your device is older and can no longer receive updates, you should consider replacing or retiring that item.” The FTC likewise advises disconnecting obsolete, unused devices that may have outdated security.

Settings, update support, and privacy controls vary by product and can change. Recheck the current manufacturer instructions when you add a device, change ownership, or notice that an option has moved.
