Start with the assistant’s activity dashboard, set the shortest practical retention period, disable optional recording-for-improvement, and remove personal features from speakers used by guests or children. Alexa, Google Home/Nest, and Apple HomePod all provide deletion controls, but they cover different data. A deleted voice clip may not be the same thing as a transcript, device-status history, sensor reading, account activity, or information retained briefly for safety and service delivery.
Use the platform section for your household, then apply the shared-home checklist. App labels and defaults change with operating-system versions, account type, region, and staged rollouts, so treat the paths below as the current route to look for rather than a guarantee that every screen is identical.
What these controls can—and cannot—do
A smart speaker normally waits for a wake phrase or a physical interaction, sends the resulting request to the provider’s service, and returns an answer or command. Privacy settings determine what activity is retained, how long it remains available, whether samples can be used to improve speech systems, and which account or personal data the assistant can reach.
Deletion is not a universal “erase everything” switch. Voice recordings, transcripts, typed requests, smart-home status events, location data, advertising controls, and personal-request permissions are separate controls. Turning off a history view can also leave a short operational copy: Google documents that Home activity may remain for up to 24 hours after Home History is disabled for service, safety, and feedback purposes.

No platform can promise that a request will be answered without processing it. Amazon describes Alexa requests as cloud handled; disabling history changes retention and personalization, not the processing required to respond. The practical goal is to minimize retained data and limit optional access while keeping the functions you actually use.
At-a-glance comparison
| Platform | Activity and deletion | Improvement and advertising boundaries | Personal data and activation controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alexa | Voice recordings, transcripts, typed requests, and some third-party smart-home information can be reviewed or deleted in Alexa Privacy. Automatic deletion and voice-deletion commands are available. | Skill permissions and interest-based advertising are separate reviews. Cloud processing still occurs for requests. | Wake indicators and history expose false wakes; account holders can adjust deletion and review settings in the Alexa app. |
| Google Home/Nest | Home History supports manual deletion and auto-delete at 3, 18, or 36 months, or no auto-delete. Google says up to 24 hours of activity may remain after Home History is turned off. | Connected-home video, audio recordings, and environmental sensor readings are kept separate from ad personalization. Text of voice interactions can inform ad interests depending on settings. | Web & App Activity and wake-phrase sensitivity are independent decisions; lower sensitivity can reduce false activations. |
| Apple HomePod | Siri History can be deleted from HomePod settings. Location Services is managed for the whole home, not one speaker. | Improve Siri & Dictation is an optional analytics control that can permit storage and review of samples. | Siri can be stopped by voice or disabled where hands-free use is unnecessary. Personal Requests can reach data on a user’s iPhone or iPad. |
Alexa: review every data category in Alexa Privacy
1. Open the privacy dashboard
- Open the Alexa mobile app.
- Select More, then Alexa Privacy.
- Work through each category rather than changing only Voice History. The available labels can move after an app update.
2. Inspect and delete Voice History
Voice History can show the audio recording, its text transcript, and typed requests associated with Alexa. Amazon also says the dashboard can expose information Alexa receives from third-party smart-home devices. Review entries for accidental activations: a false wake can place nearby speech in the history even when nobody intended to address the speaker.
Echo devices provide a visual or audible indication when the wake word is detected and recording is streamed to the cloud. That indicator helps you identify when an activation occurred, but it does not prove that every activation was intentional. Delete individual entries or the available ranges from the Voice History screen after checking what was captured.
3. Set automatic deletion and voice-deletion commands
Alexa Privacy offers automatic-deletion choices; select the shortest period that still supports the continuity or personalization you want. The exact choices displayed can differ by account and region. Amazon also documents a voice-deletion setting that enables commands such as “Delete what I just said” and “Delete everything I said today.” Test the command once and confirm that the resulting entry disappears from the dashboard.

Deleting history can reduce personalization and may affect features that rely on previous interactions. It does not mean the request was never processed: Alexa still has to handle a command in order to answer it.
4. Clear smart-home device history separately
In Alexa Privacy, review the history for third-party smart-home devices. Amazon says status and usage information can be deleted all at once or automatically after a period you configure. This can remove useful context for routines and troubleshooting. It also does not remove every device identifier or every request record, so treat it as a separate minimization step, not a complete account reset.
5. Audit skills and advertising controls
Open the skill-permission view and remove access that is no longer needed. A skill may have access to account-linked information that is different from the microphone history. Then review interest-based advertising controls. These settings limit account-linked personalization; they do not turn an Echo into a fully local assistant or stop cloud handling of a live request.

- Move an Echo away from televisions, radios, and other voices that can resemble the wake word.
- Check Voice History after a suspected false wake and delete the captured entry.
- Use the automatic-deletion setting even if you keep a short history for routine personalization.
- For a room that does not need a microphone, unplug the device or use its physical microphone-off control; history settings alone do not stop listening for the wake word.
Google Home and Nest: separate Home History, account activity, and audio improvement
1. Review Home History and choose retention
Open the Google Home app and find the Home History activity controls. Review prior events before changing the retention choice. Google documents an 18-month auto-delete period by default, with options for 3 months, 36 months, manual deletion, or no auto-delete. Select a period that matches your need for troubleshooting and routines; a shorter period reduces the time activity remains available.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
When Home History is turned off, Google says activity can still be retained for up to 24 hours for service, safety, and feedback purposes. That short operational retention is different from the history visible for long-term review.
2. Decide what to do with Web & App Activity
Web & App Activity is a separate account setting. Google says turning it off limits personalized experiences in Assistant and other Google services. Leave it on only if that cross-service personalization is worth the additional account activity; turn it off when minimizing linkage matters more than continuity between Assistant and other services. This choice does not replace the Home History setting.
3. Review recordings used to improve services
Look for the control covering the use of voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings to improve Google services. The wording and location can vary as the Google Home experience rolls out to different accounts. If you do not want optional samples used for improvement, turn the setting off and verify that the change applies to the account that owns the household devices.

4. Adjust “Hey Google” sensitivity
In the Google Home app, open the device’s assistant or recognition settings and adjust wake-phrase sensitivity. Lower sensitivity can reduce false activations caused by similar words in television or conversation, but it can also make an intentional “Hey Google” less reliable. After changing it, test from the normal speaking position in the room instead of assuming the slider has the same effect everywhere.

5. Understand the advertising boundary
Google states that connected-home video, audio recordings, and home-environment sensor readings are kept separate from advertising and are not used for ad personalization. It also states that the text of voice interactions may inform interests for ad personalization, depending on your account settings. Therefore, disabling audio-improvement sharing does not automatically remove every text-based personalization path; review Home History and Web & App Activity as well.
6. Check cameras and sensors as a distinct category
If your Google Home household includes cameras or environmental sensors, review their retention and sharing controls separately from Assistant history. The advertising separation described above does not mean those devices have no access permissions, household members, or security settings to review.

1. Delete Siri History
- Open the Home app.
- Open the HomePod’s settings.
- Select Siri History, then choose Delete Siri History.
Apple says HomePod stores a history of Siri interactions and may use it to personalize Siri. Deleting this history removes the available interaction history; it does not undo the processing needed to answer an earlier request.
2. Stop hands-free listening where it is unnecessary
On a HomePod, say “Hey Siri, stop listening.” Siri can still be activated by touching and holding the top of the HomePod. Use this for bedrooms, guest rooms, or any period when you want the microphone’s wake-phrase function disabled without unplugging the speaker. For a permanent change, review the Siri or “Hey Siri” control for that device in the Home app.

Apple’s privacy description says nothing is sent to Apple’s servers until HomePod recognizes “Hey Siri” or “Siri,” or until you touch and hold the top to make a request. That is a wake-trigger boundary, not a guarantee that an activated request stays on the device.
3. Review Location Services for the entire home
In the Home app, select More, then Home Settings, and review Location Services. Apple documents this as a home-wide setting: changing it applies to all HomePod devices in that home. If only one room needs location-aware features, the all-device scope is an important trade-off to understand before switching it off.
4. Turn off Improve Siri & Dictation when you do not want sample review
For the Home Organizer, open Home app → HomePod → Accessory Settings → Analytics & Improvements. Turn off Improve Siri & Dictation if you do not want Apple to store and review samples of audio, transcripts, and related request data for improving Siri, Dictation, Translate, and related features. This is an opt-in analytics choice, separate from deleting Siri History.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Disable Personal Requests on shared speakers
Personal Requests can use messages, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, and compatible apps on a user’s iPhone or iPad. Disable the feature on speakers accessible to guests, renters, children, or visitors. A voice-recognition feature can distinguish household members, but it should not be treated as a substitute for removing access to personal content in a shared room.
Hardening a shared home
Privacy risk rises when a speaker is in a hallway, rental, classroom, child’s room, or other place where people who are not the account owner can speak to it. Apply these decisions to every platform:
- Disable personal-content features, including calendars, messages, contacts, notes, reminders, and purchasing, on shared speakers unless the household genuinely needs them.
- Turn off voice recognition or personal results where guests or children can trigger the device. Do not rely on a speaker recognizing the “right” person every time.
- Set a short automatic-deletion period and schedule a recurring manual review of activity.
- Place devices away from televisions and open windows, then inspect history for false wakes after a move or software update.
- When privacy is more important than availability, use the physical microphone switch, stop-listening command, or unplug the device.
A maintenance routine that catches changes
- After setup: trigger one intentional request, confirm it appears in the correct history, and verify that your deletion command or button removes it.
- After an app or operating-system update: revisit the privacy dashboard. Menu names, defaults, and the location of audio-improvement controls can change.
- Monthly: review skills, linked services, Personal Requests, Web & App Activity, and any camera or sensor permissions.
- Quarterly: inspect a sample of history for false wakes, then delete old activity and confirm the selected auto-delete period is still enabled.
- Before guests arrive: disable personal requests and other account-linked features on speakers they can reach; restore them only when the room is private again.
Choosing the right privacy trade-off
Use short retention and disabled improvement sharing when your priority is minimizing stored material. Keep a longer history only when you actively use it to troubleshoot routines, recover a command, or improve personalization. Lower wake sensitivity when false activations are frequent, but raise it slightly if intentional requests fail. Disable location and personal requests when their convenience is not worth home-wide or account-wide access.
There is no universal “most private” ecosystem. Alexa exposes several data categories in one privacy dashboard but remains cloud handled; Google separates connected-home recordings and sensors from ad personalization while retaining distinct text and account-activity controls; Apple offers a strong wake-trigger boundary and home-wide settings, but Personal Requests and analytics require deliberate configuration. The safest setup is the one whose history, retention, improvement, activation, and personal-content controls you have actually reviewed.
