Most smart-home devices do not need an individual Ethernet cable if the exact model supports Wi-Fi or another wireless connection and has a reliable signal where you install it. But wireless devices can still depend on a wired hub, and cameras need enough upload bandwidth to stream well. Check the model’s network requirements before running cable—or deciding you can skip it.
Which smart-home devices can work without Ethernet?
These five device types can often connect wirelessly, but the connection method varies by model. A category name—or a Matter label—does not guarantee that every part of a system is cable-free.
1. Smart plugs
A Wi-Fi smart plug can connect to your home network without Ethernet. Before buying or installing one, check its official specifications for supported Wi-Fi band, setup requirements, and compatibility with your smart-home system. The available guidance does not establish specifications for a particular plug model, so verify the exact product rather than assuming all plugs work the same way.

2. Smart bulbs and wireless lighting controls
A bulb or lighting control may communicate wirelessly, but a bridge or hub in the same system may still need a cable. For example, Lutron says Caséta controls use its Clear Connect wireless technology, while the Caséta Smart Hub must connect directly to the router with Ethernet. Lutron support states: “The Caséta hub does not connect to your home network via wifi.” Lutron’s Caséta hub requirements

3. Smart security cameras
Some cameras connect directly to Wi-Fi; others are part of a hub-based setup. For direct-to-Wi-Fi Arlo cameras, the requirements specify 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Arlo also warns that insufficient upstream bandwidth can reduce video quality or delay the start of a live stream. Its guidance lists 1 Mbps upload per camera for other Arlo cameras, so confirm whether that figure applies to your exact model before using it to plan a connection. Arlo’s camera network requirements
Blink’s guidance is different and applies to its own devices: it specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and a minimum 2 Mbit/sec upload speed. Blink also recommends checking signal strength in its app. These are vendor-specific requirements, not universal minimums for smart cameras. Blink’s device network requirements

4. Matter devices
Matter is a smart-home standard, not a promise that a product uses Wi-Fi or has no wired component. Google says Matter devices can communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. Check the individual product’s connection method and whether it needs a separate hub or border router; the Matter label alone does not answer those questions. Google’s Matter connectivity guidance
5. Wireless controls and sensors in hub-based systems
Controls and sensors can communicate wirelessly with a system hub, avoiding a cable at each device. The hub is the important exception: it may connect to the router by Ethernet, as the Caséta example shows. Check the network requirements for the entire system, not just the end device.

When is an Ethernet cable still worth running?
- The product requires it. Follow the exact model’s network instructions, especially for a hub or base station.
- The wireless link is unreliable at the installation point. Signal strength can vary with distance, congestion, and interference. Google notes that connected clients compete for bandwidth and nearby wireless routers can interfere. Google’s guidance on Wi-Fi bandwidth and interference
- You need wired mesh backhaul. Google documents Ethernet backhaul for supported Nest Wifi and Google Wifi models, but Nest Wifi points do not have Ethernet ports. Check which model and device can use a wired connection before planning the layout. Google’s mesh Wi-Fi Ethernet guidance
- The device uses Power over Ethernet (PoE). For compatible equipment, one Ethernet cable can carry both power and data. A PoE switch must match the required port count, speed, PoE type, and power budget. TP-Link’s PoE overview
How to decide before you run cable
- Find the exact model’s official network requirements. Identify whether it uses Wi-Fi, Thread, another wireless protocol, Ethernet, or a hub.
- Check the intended location. Confirm the device has an adequate signal where it will be installed; a strong signal near the router does not establish coverage in another room.
- For a camera, check upload requirements. Use the manufacturer’s figure for that model and consider the connection’s available upstream bandwidth when other devices are active.
- Account for every system component. Check whether a bridge, hub, base station, or mesh point needs Ethernet even if the plug, bulb, sensor, or camera itself is wireless.
- Run cable only to solve a real need. Ethernet may be required, improve supported mesh backhaul, or provide PoE; otherwise, a suitable wireless connection can spare you the installation.
