Before adding a smart-home device, check whether its essential controls and automations keep working when the internet connection is disconnected. For a meaningful test, leave household power, the router or access point, the local network, and the controller running. This is a resilience check—not a promise that every feature survives every kind of failure.

What “works offline” should mean

In this test, “offline” means the internet connection to your home is down while your local network remains available. A locally controlled device can still communicate with a controller over a supported local protocol, and automations running on that controller can continue without reaching an outside service.

Home Assistant says local-protocol devices and automations can continue working through an internet outage. Its documentation names Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome as examples of local protocols: Home Assistant’s official FAQ.

The rule is useful because it filters for resilience, but “local” is not a guarantee based on a product’s radio label alone. The device, its exact integration, the controller, any required radio or coordinator, and the home network all need to be present and working.

What to verify before buying

Check the exact device and integration for cloud dependence

Find out whether the specific model and its Home Assistant integration control the device locally or rely on the manufacturer’s cloud. If control passes through a cloud service, that path will not be available during an internet outage. Do not assume every model from a manufacturer has the same behavior.

For Home Assistant, the Works with Home Assistant program identifies devices tested for local control. Check the exact model and the integration you intend to use rather than relying on a brand-level claim.

Confirm the controller and radio requirements

Some devices need additional hardware to join the local network. Check whether the controller supports the required protocol or needs a separate radio, coordinator, or border router. For example, Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation requires a stable local serial connection to its Zigbee coordinator: ZHA integration documentation.

Home Assistant Green is one example of a local controller. Its product page says it can work with Matter devices over Wi-Fi or Ethernet after setup; Matter devices that use Thread need a Thread border router. The page describes Connect ZBT-2 as an accessory for Zigbee and Thread, but says Thread support is under development: Home Assistant Green.

Separate local controls from internet services

Write down which functions matter to you—such as a physical switch, app control at home, schedules, voice control, or remote access—and confirm how each one works. A device may support local basic control while other features still use online services.

Home Assistant lists its Cloud remote-access features, Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa integrations, software updates, and app-store access among the things that still need internet access. These dependencies vary by product and integration, so this does not establish that every voice command or device fails in the same way: Home Assistant’s internet-outage FAQ.

Amazon Developer documents local connectivity options for some Alexa-compatible devices, saying, “This connection allows Alexa to control your device during internet outages.” That statement applies to the local connection option described on the page, not to all Alexa features or devices: Amazon’s local connectivity documentation. Verify the device’s connection mode and the functions it supports through that path.

Test an outage without confusing it with other failures

  1. Keep the home powered and the local network up. Leave the router or access point, controller, and device power on.
  2. Disconnect the internet connection. Remove the WAN connection or otherwise disable internet access without turning off the router’s local network.
  3. Try the functions you depend on. Check local controls and any automations hosted by the controller. Treat remote access, cloud integrations, updates, and app-store access as separate internet-dependent functions unless the relevant product documentation confirms otherwise.
  4. Record the boundary of the test. A passing result shows behavior during WAN loss under those conditions; it does not demonstrate what happens if Wi-Fi, the router, the controller, or household power fails.

A router or Wi-Fi outage is a different failure from an internet outage. A Zigbee network, for example, needs its coordinator and a stable local connection to it; Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation also specifies a single dedicated coordinator for one Zigbee network. A failed controller can stop automations hosted on it. Whether devices retain direct device-to-device behavior depends on their setup, so verify that behavior for the specific products rather than assuming it.

Use the rule as a buying filter, not a protocol ranking

The available documentation does not establish one universally best protocol. Compare the actual setup and behavior you need instead:

  • Cloud dependency: Does the exact device and integration operate locally, or does control depend on a vendor’s cloud?
  • Required hardware: Does your controller have the needed support, or will you need a coordinator, radio, or border router?
  • Functions that remain available: Distinguish local device control and controller-hosted automations from remote access, voice features, updates, and other online services.
  • Failure being tested: WAN loss, Wi-Fi loss, controller failure, and power loss are separate scenarios. A successful internet-disconnection test says nothing by itself about the others.
  • Exact compatibility: Confirm the model against the controller’s integration documentation or tested-device list.
