Start with one routine you want to improve, then choose a controller and compatible devices that can carry it out. For example, you might automate a light to turn on when you arrive home. You do not need to automate every room at once—or commit to one protocol before you know what your devices require.

Where should you start automating a new home?

Write down a few small, specific jobs you want your home to handle. Useful starting points include switching on an entry light when you arrive, turning off selected lights at bedtime, or adjusting a thermostat on a schedule. Choose a task you can explain in one sentence, and identify the device or devices it needs.

Then build only that automation. Home Assistant’s getting-started guide follows a similar sequence: select hardware, onboard the system, add integrations, and create an automation. Its guide estimates that most people can move from a fresh install to a working smart home in about an afternoon; that is Home Assistant’s estimate, not an independent timing study.

  1. Define the task: State what should happen, and when or under what condition.
  2. List the devices: Identify the sensor, switch, light, thermostat, or other equipment needed to make it happen.
  3. Check compatibility: Confirm that the devices work with your chosen controller and that you have any required hub, radio, or network equipment.
  4. Create and test one automation: Verify that it behaves as intended before adding more devices or conditions.

How do you choose a controller and setup?

A controller coordinates devices and automations; a connectivity standard describes how compatible devices communicate. Decide first whether you want dedicated plug-and-play hardware or would rather reuse suitable hardware you already own. Then check device support, setup requirements, and how much you expect to rely on cloud services.

Route What it involves Setup guidance
Home Assistant Green Dedicated plug-and-play Home Assistant hardware. Home Assistant recommends it for most people seeking a plug-and-play hub. Home Assistant estimates about 15 minutes for basic setup, plus another 30 to 60 minutes for initial integrations and dashboard work. These are its published estimates, not independent timing results.
Existing computer or single-board computer Install Home Assistant on suitable hardware, such as a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual machine. Home Assistant estimates about 1 to 2 hours for a custom installation. Actual effort depends on the hardware and configuration.

Home Assistant says its platform runs on your own hardware and stores data locally. That describes Home Assistant; it is not a guarantee that every device in a mixed setup stores data locally or works without cloud services. Its FAQ also describes Green and installation options.

What do Matter and Thread mean for device compatibility?

Matter is a connectivity standard, not a complete smart home platform or a replacement for your controller. The Connectivity Standards Alliance says Matter uses Bluetooth Low Energy for setup and Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet for connectivity. A Matter label alone does not establish that a particular device will work with every controller or network.

Thread devices need a Thread border router. Compatibility also depends on the controller and its setup. Home Assistant’s Matter integration documentation lists prerequisites and says the official Matter app currently supports Home Assistant OS; check the current requirements for your installation and devices before buying. Home Assistant names Connect ZBT-2 as an optional accessory for Zigbee, Thread, and Matter, but whether you need it depends on your specific controller, network, and devices.

Amazon says compatible Echo devices can connect to and control Matter devices locally over Wi-Fi or Thread. Its Matter documentation lists compatible Echo and eero devices, but supported devices and Matter versions can change. Check that list for your exact equipment. Amazon’s setup instructions tell users to add Matter devices through the Alexa app and suggest placing them within 30 ft (9 m) of a compatible Alexa hub or device. Treat that distance as Amazon’s setup guidance, not a universal guaranteed range.

What will still work if the internet goes down?

Some local devices and automations can continue to work without an internet connection, but an outage does not guarantee that your whole smart home will behave as usual. Home Assistant says local protocols including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome do not need internet access. In practice, operation depends on the specific devices, controller, local network, and whether an automation calls an online service.

  • A locally connected device may remain controllable by a local controller.
  • An automation that depends on a cloud service may stop working when that service or internet connection is unavailable.
  • Features that require an online account or remote service may not be available during an outage.

Home Assistant explains its offline behavior in its local-control overview and FAQ. Check the documentation for each device and integration rather than assuming its cloud-dependent and local features behave the same way.

How should you expand after the first automation?

Keep the first routine simple enough to test: one clear trigger and the intended action. Once it works reliably, add another task or device only when it solves a real problem. Before expanding, check these practical points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compatibility: Does the new device work with your controller, and does it require a hub, radio, or Thread border router?
  • Network and placement: Can the device reach the needed network or controller from where it will be installed?
  • Cloud dependence: Does the automation rely on an internet service, or can it run locally with your chosen setup?
  • Support details: Are the required protocol, controller, and installation type supported for this particular device?

For a first project, choose one job, verify the equipment it needs, and make that routine dependable before broadening the system.
