Smart HDR Manager is a free, open-source Windows tray utility that turns HDR on when selected games or supported video playback starts, then returns the display to SDR when the content ends. It can detect games from Steam, Epic, GOG and Xbox, react to genuine HDR playback on YouTube, monitor local HDR video in several players, and optionally follow NVIDIA RTX Video HDR processing.

What Smart HDR Manager does

Windows HDR is useful for compatible games and video, but leaving it enabled can make ordinary desktop content appear washed out or incorrectly toned. Smart HDR Manager automates the switch instead of requiring you to open Windows display settings each time.

  • Select the games that should activate HDR.
  • HDR turns on when a selected game launches and turns off after it closes.
  • A per-game startup delay can postpone the change for titles that flicker, crash or misbehave when HDR changes during launch.
  • The app can limit a video-triggered switch to the monitor showing that video.

The developer, manfredss, describes the project as free, MIT-licensed, open source, without internet access or telemetry.

Supported game launchers and detection

The utility is designed to find games installed through Steam, Epic, GOG and Xbox. You then choose which detected titles are allowed to trigger HDR; detection alone does not mean every installed game will switch displays automatically.

When a selected executable starts, Smart HDR Manager requests HDR activation. When the game exits, it requests SDR. If a game initializes slowly, use its startup-delay setting so the display mode changes after the title is ready rather than during its launcher or splash screen.

Automatic HDR for YouTube and local video

YouTube HDR streams

The video workflow uses a Tampermonkey script. The script marks a browser tab only while a real HDR stream is playing, so merely opening a YouTube page does not trigger HDR. Install and enable the script in a supported browser, then let Smart HDR Manager respond to the marker.

NVIDIA RTX Video HDR

An optional RTX Video HDR mode turns HDR on while NVIDIA’s RTX Video HDR processes SDR video. This is separate from a video’s native HDR flag and requires compatible NVIDIA hardware and the relevant driver or feature configuration. AMD and Intel support was not established in the developer’s testing.

Can it switch only one monitor?

Yes, the video workflow can restrict switching to the monitor on which the video is displayed. This matters when one screen is HDR-capable and another is used for SDR desktop work. Multi-monitor behavior was not broadly validated by the developer, however, so treat complex arrangements as beta territory and verify the result with your own layout.

Manual controls and automation

You do not have to wait for automatic detection. The tray menu provides direct controls, and an override hotkey can force a mode change. Stream Deck or other automation software can call the command-line switches:

You need an HDR-capable monitor. Software can request Windows HDR changes, but it cannot make a non-HDR panel display genuine HDR.

Operating system and hardware coverage

The developer reports testing on Windows 11 25H2 with an RTX 5070 Ti and one HDR monitor. Windows 10, AMD graphics, Intel graphics and multi-monitor setups were described as untested. That does not prove incompatibility; it means there is no stated validation for those combinations.

Beta status and SmartScreen

Smart HDR Manager is beta software. Windows SmartScreen may warn because the executable is unsigned. The release notes provide VirusTotal links for users who want an additional malware scan before running it. Download the release from the developer’s GitHub page, review the README, and keep the warning in context: an unsigned file is not automatically malicious, but it deserves verification.

Practical setup sequence

  1. Confirm that the Windows monitor you intend to control is HDR-capable.
  2. Download the Smart HDR Manager release and read its README and release notes before launching the executable.
  3. If SmartScreen appears, verify that the file came from the developer’s release and use the provided VirusTotal references before choosing whether to run it.
  4. Open the tray utility and select the games that should trigger HDR. Check the detected entries for Steam, Epic, GOG and Xbox titles.
  5. Set a per-game startup delay for any title that flickers, crashes or fails when HDR changes immediately at launch.
  6. For YouTube detection, install the supplied Tampermonkey script and enable it in the browser. Test with an actual HDR stream rather than a normal SDR video.
  7. For local video, configure VLC, mpv, MPC-HC or PotPlayer as supported playback sources, then test that HDR turns off when playback ends.
  8. If you use RTX Video HDR, enable that mode only with compatible NVIDIA hardware and verify the resulting display behavior.
  9. Use the tray menu, override hotkey or command-line switches when you need a manual exception. Resume automatic operation with --auto after a forced mode.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • HDR does not activate: confirm the monitor supports HDR, the game is selected, and automatic mode is not paused.
  • The game flickers or crashes at launch: add a longer per-game startup delay.
  • YouTube switches too early: ensure the Tampermonkey marker is active only for an HDR stream and not for ordinary page navigation.
  • The desktop looks wrong afterward: allow the app to return to SDR, apply the Chrome dimness fix where relevant, or use --force-sdr for an immediate manual reset.
  • A second monitor changes unexpectedly: use the video monitor-targeting option and test with the other display disconnected if necessary; multi-monitor support remains unverified by the developer.
