For paying at ordinary contactless card terminals, choose a supported smartwatch. Apple Watch can present an Apple Pay card at an NFC reader, and eligible Wear OS watches can use Google Wallet. Smart glasses are not yet an equivalent tap-to-pay option: the clearest official example is Meta’s limited testing of UPI Lite QR payments in India, not general NFC terminal payments.

This distinction matters because “contactless” describes more than a device. The watch, wallet service, card issuer, payment network, country, and merchant terminal all have to support the transaction. The glasses example uses a QR code and a WhatsApp-linked bank account, so it should be treated as a narrow, rollout-specific feature rather than evidence that glasses have the same payment capability as watches.

Smart glasses and smartwatches: the practical difference

As of October 2026, smartwatch payment support is documented for conventional contactless terminals. Apple’s instructions cover paying with Apple Pay on Apple Watch, while Google documents Google Wallet on eligible NFC watches running Wear OS 2.0 or later. Both workflows use the watch’s NFC hardware to communicate with a merchant reader.

The glasses evidence is different. Meta described testing a UPI Lite feature for its AI glasses in India. The wearer looks at a payment QR code and says “Hey Meta, scan and pay”; the transaction uses a bank account linked through WhatsApp. Meta’s announcement described the capability as testing or forthcoming. It did not establish NFC tap-to-pay at card terminals, broad international availability, or support for ordinary cards in a watch-style wallet.

Question Supported smartwatch payment Documented smart-glasses example
How does it communicate with the merchant? NFC tap at a compatible contactless terminal. Camera-based QR scan for UPI Lite in the India test.
Can it use a normal card terminal? Yes, when the card, network, issuer, market and terminal are supported. Not established by Meta’s announcement.
Where is it available? Only in supported countries, on eligible devices, with participating cards or issuers. India-specific testing or forthcoming rollout; wider availability was not stated.
What does the wearer do? Apple Watch: double-click the side button, select a card if necessary, then hold the display near the reader. Google Wallet: open Wallet as needed and hold the watch’s NFC area to the terminal. Look at the QR code and say “Hey Meta, scan and pay.”
Is a phone required at the moment of payment? Google explicitly says a card added to the watch can pay without the phone. Apple’s terminal procedure is performed on the watch after setup; the cited Apple instructions do not describe a phone being presented to the reader. The glasses avoid reaching for the phone during the described flow, but the account is linked through WhatsApp and the glasses require a smartphone and the Meta AI app for operation.
What is the strongest use case? Everyday checkout at stores that accept the relevant contactless network. A limited QR-payment experiment, not a general replacement for a card or NFC wallet.

What “contactless payment” means here

A contactless card transaction normally uses NFC: the payment device and the merchant terminal exchange information when held close together. A contactless symbol on the terminal is a useful sign, but Apple notes that the merchant must also accept the card’s payment network and that NFC Contactless must be enabled on the terminal. A symbol by itself does not guarantee that a particular Apple Pay card will be accepted.

QR payments are contactless in the everyday sense that you do not hand over a card or insert a chip. Technically, however, they follow a different path. The camera reads a visual code, and the payment service processes the transaction through the linked account. That is why the India glasses test should not be described as NFC support or as proof that glasses can tap a bank card on any contactless reader.

How smartwatch payments work

Apple Pay on Apple Watch

Apple documents a simple terminal procedure:

  1. At a contactless reader, double-click the Apple Watch side button.
  2. If more than one card is available, choose the card you want to use.
  3. Hold the watch display near the reader’s contactless area.
  4. Wait for the watch to tap and beep, indicating that the payment interaction has completed.

The transaction still depends on eligibility. Apple says Apple Pay must be available in the country or region, the issuer must support the card, the merchant must accept the card’s network, and the terminal must have NFC Contactless enabled. A card that works in Apple Pay on an iPhone is not automatically guaranteed to work on every Apple Watch, market or merchant configuration.

Google Wallet on Wear OS

Google Wallet supports payments on eligible NFC watches running Wear OS 2.0 or later in supported regions with supported cards. Google also requires current Wallet and Google Play Services components, and the watch must meet its security requirements. A screen lock is part of that protection: Google says removing the watch’s screen lock deletes Wallet cards.

At checkout, open the Wallet app if it is not already ready, select the card when prompted, and position the watch’s NFC antenna against the terminal. Keep it in place until the watch responds. Google explicitly states that once a card is added to the watch, you do not need your phone to pay at the terminal.

Why eligibility is conditional

Wallet support is a chain of dependencies rather than a single device feature. Check all of these before relying on a watch as your only payment method:

  • The watch model includes NFC.
  • The operating system meets the service requirement; Google’s documented minimum is Wear OS 2.0.
  • Your country or region is supported.
  • Your bank and specific card are eligible.
  • The Wallet app and Google Play Services are current where Google requires them.
  • The watch has an active screen lock and uses unmodified, certified software.
  • The merchant terminal accepts the card’s network and has contactless NFC enabled.

What smart glasses can do today

The India UPI Lite example

Meta’s India announcement describes an AI-glasses payment flow based on UPI Lite. The wearer looks at a QR code and says “Hey Meta, scan and pay.” Payment is made through a bank account linked to WhatsApp. The announcement presents the feature as a test or forthcoming capability, and it is tied to India’s UPI environment.

That evidence supports a narrow conclusion: some glasses may be able to recognize a payment QR code and initiate a supported account-based transaction in a specific rollout. It does not support the broader claims that glasses have NFC, that they can store ordinary debit or credit cards, or that they work at the same terminals as Apple Pay or Google Wallet.

Phone and app requirements

The Ray-Ban Meta FAQ says the glasses require a smartphone connection and the Meta AI app to operate. Even if the wearer does not reach for the phone during a QR payment, the glasses are not a wholly standalone payment device in the way a properly configured Google Wallet watch can be at the terminal. The linked WhatsApp account is also part of the described payment arrangement.

Why QR and NFC should not be conflated

An NFC terminal expects a nearby NFC device. A QR flow expects a camera to read a code and a payment service to authorize the resulting transaction. A retailer may offer both methods, but compatibility is not interchangeable. If a checkout has only an NFC card reader and no supported QR display, the documented glasses scenario does not give you a way to tap and pay.

Setup checklist before you leave the phone behind

Apple Watch with Apple Pay

  1. Confirm that Apple Pay is available in your country or region.
  2. Check that your bank or card issuer supports the card you intend to add.
  3. Confirm that the merchant types you use accept the card’s payment network.
  4. At a store, look for a terminal with contactless capability, but be prepared for the terminal to have NFC disabled or to reject a network it does not accept.
  5. At payment time, double-click the side button, select the intended card, and hold the display near the reader until the watch taps and beeps.

These checks distinguish a card-eligibility problem from a terminal problem. If the card cannot be added, contact the issuer or check the region and card support. If it is added successfully but fails at one store, ask whether that terminal accepts the card’s network and has contactless NFC enabled.

Wear OS watch with Google Wallet

  1. Verify that the watch has NFC and runs Wear OS 2.0 or later.
  2. Check that Google Wallet payments are available in your country or region.
  3. Confirm that your particular card and issuer are supported.
  4. Update Google Wallet and Google Play Services if updates are offered.
  5. Set or retain a screen lock on the watch. Removing it removes Wallet cards.
  6. Do not use modified or uncertified software that fails Google’s security checks.
  7. Add the card to Wallet on the watch and complete any issuer verification.
  8. At checkout, open Wallet if necessary, choose the card, place the watch’s NFC area against the reader, and keep it there until the watch confirms the transaction.

After the card is on the watch, Google says the phone is not needed for the payment itself. You still need to meet the watch, account and merchant conditions above.

Glasses using the described QR capability

  1. Confirm that you are in the supported India rollout or test described by Meta; the announcement does not establish general availability elsewhere.
  2. Set up the glasses with a compatible smartphone and the Meta AI app.
  3. Link the supported bank account through WhatsApp as required by the UPI Lite flow.
  4. At a participating checkout, look at the payment QR code and use the documented voice command, “Hey Meta, scan and pay.”
  5. Wait for the glasses and payment service to indicate whether the QR transaction was accepted.

If a merchant offers only a standard card terminal, this QR procedure is not a substitute for an NFC wallet.

Troubleshooting failed payments

Google Wallet says the watch is not eligible

  • Check the operating system version and NFC setting.
  • Confirm that the country, issuer and exact card are supported; regional or bank restrictions can prevent setup even when the hardware is compatible.
  • Install current Wallet and Google Play Services updates.
  • Restore a screen lock if it was removed, then add the cards again if Google deleted them.
  • Replace modified or uncertified software with a supported configuration if security verification fails.

The watch is ready, but the terminal does not respond

  • Open the wallet and make sure the intended card is selected.
  • Position the watch’s NFC antenna over the terminal’s contactless area rather than moving it away immediately.
  • Hold it there until the watch gives its confirmation response.
  • Try another terminal if the first one has contactless disabled or does not accept the card’s network.

Apple Pay is declined or unavailable

  • Verify the card issuer and country or region support Apple Pay.
  • Ask the merchant whether the terminal accepts the card’s network.
  • Do not assume that a contactless logo proves the terminal is configured for every Apple Pay card.
  • If the card cannot be added at all, resolve the issuer or regional eligibility issue before troubleshooting the reader.

The glasses cannot complete a QR payment

  • Check that the feature is actually enabled for your account and location; Meta’s cited capability was described as testing or forthcoming in India.
  • Confirm the smartphone connection and Meta AI app setup.
  • Verify that the WhatsApp-linked bank account and UPI Lite arrangement are supported.
  • Use a merchant QR code that belongs to the supported payment flow. An NFC-only terminal will not accept this method.

Which device should you choose?

Choose a smartwatch when you need ordinary checkout compatibility

A watch is the practical choice for supermarkets, transit gates, cafés and other places that rely on card-terminal contactless payments, provided your card and region are supported. Apple Watch offers a clearly documented button-and-tap flow. A compatible Wear OS watch offers NFC Wallet payment and, according to Google, can complete the purchase without the phone present.

Consider glasses only for a specific QR workflow

Glasses may be attractive if your payment environment uses the supported QR system, you are in the relevant India rollout, and you value a voice-initiated scan without taking out the phone. That is a specialized convenience, not a general NFC wallet. You should still carry another payment method for merchants that accept only contactless cards or for situations outside the supported rollout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this decision test

  1. Does the merchant use an NFC card reader? Select a supported smartwatch.
  2. Does the merchant display a compatible QR code and are you in the documented India test? The glasses flow may be relevant, subject to account and rollout eligibility.
  3. Do you need payment to work without the phone? Google explicitly documents that capability for a card added to an eligible watch; the glasses setup still depends on a smartphone and Meta AI app.
  4. Is your bank, card and region unknown? Verify issuer and regional support before buying or relying on either device.

Bottom line for shoppers

Smartwatches currently have the stronger, better-defined case for contactless payments. Apple Watch and eligible Wear OS watches are documented for NFC terminal transactions, with clear user steps and explicit conditions. Smart glasses have a promising but narrow QR-payment example: Meta’s India UPI Lite test uses a WhatsApp-linked account and does not demonstrate general NFC tap-to-pay. Treat a watch as the payment device for conventional terminals; treat glasses payment as a location- and rollout-dependent experiment until broader official support is documented.
