For Ray-Ban Meta glasses, battery life depends on the generation and what you do: Ray-Ban’s US FAQ lists up to 4 hours of moderate use for the original model and up to 8 hours for Gen 2. Setup requires the Meta AI app and a compatible phone; meeting the minimum operating-system requirement alone does not guarantee that a particular phone is supported. When the glasses capture a photo or video, an outward-facing light is designed to signal that capture is happening. These details are specific to Ray-Ban Meta, not universal rules for every smart-glasses brand.
How long does Ray-Ban Meta battery life last?
Ray-Ban’s US FAQ gives different estimates for the original Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. In both cases, the figures are maximums, not guarantees: Ray-Ban says runtime varies with use and other factors. The FAQ distinguishes moderate use from continuous audio streaming with voice assistance.
| Model | Moderate use | Continuous audio streaming and voice assistance |
|---|---|---|
| Original Ray-Ban Meta | Up to 4 hours | Up to 3 hours |
| Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 | Up to 8 hours | Up to 5 hours |
These are manufacturer estimates, not results from independent battery testing. “Up to” matters: actual time between charges can be shorter, and the FAQ does not give a single runtime that applies to every wearer or workload. In particular, the moderate-use estimate should not be read as a promise of the same number of hours of uninterrupted video recording. The manufacturer material cited here does not establish continuous-video runtime.
Why Gen 2 has a separate eight-hour claim
In its September 17, 2025 Gen 2 announcement, Meta described up to eight hours of battery life with typical use. That wording is not identical to the FAQ’s “moderate usage” category, so the two descriptions should not be treated as a controlled, like-for-like comparison. Meta also said the Gen 2 charging case provides an additional 48 hours of charging on the go. This is the company’s published estimate, not an independently measured total; it does not mean the glasses run continuously for 48 extra hours without being returned to the case.

How charging works
The glasses charge in their case. Ray-Ban’s FAQ says a full charge takes approximately 75 minutes and that 22 minutes of charging reaches 50%. Meta’s Gen 2 announcement separately says Gen 2 can reach 50% in 20 minutes. Keep the 20-minute figure attached to that announcement rather than combining it with the FAQ’s general charging figures: the pages report slightly different times and contexts. If a quick top-up matters, plan around the figure for the exact model and guidance you have, rather than assuming every pair follows one universal charging schedule.
Because charging takes place in the case, it is part of the everyday charging routine, not just a travel accessory. The FAQ states that a case is included; the listed facts do not establish that buyers need to purchase a generic extra case. Check the package details for the specific model and market if you are comparing listings, and follow the model’s charging instructions rather than treating another generation’s top-up time as guaranteed.
What phones work with Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
Phone setup requires the Meta AI app and a smartphone that Ray-Ban supports. The Ray-Ban US FAQ lists these minimum platform requirements:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

- iOS 14.4 or later.
- Wireless internet access, the Meta AI app, and a valid Meta account.
Those operating-system thresholds are prerequisites, not a complete compatibility guarantee. Ray-Ban points to a separate supported-phone list for exact device models. A phone may meet the listed Android or iOS version and still not appear on that list. Check the exact handset and the requirements for your market before buying or attempting setup; do not infer compatibility solely from the OS version.
How pairing and transfers use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
Ray-Ban describes pairing through the Meta AI app using Bluetooth. Wi-Fi also plays a role, but the FAQ distinguishes ordinary connection from transfers: during normal use, the app connects through the user’s Wi-Fi network; importing captures and installing firmware updates use a temporary Wi-Fi network created by the glasses. That means setup, everyday use, imports, and updates may involve different connection steps. A transfer or update that does not behave like ordinary Bluetooth pairing is not necessarily evidence that the glasses are incompatible.

- Enable location services on Android, connect the phone to wireless internet, and make sure you can sign in to a valid Meta account.
- Install and open the Meta AI app, then follow its pairing instructions to connect the glasses over Bluetooth.
- For importing photos or videos and installing firmware updates, follow the app’s prompts for the glasses’ temporary Wi-Fi connection.
If setup fails, first distinguish a phone-support problem from a connection-step problem: recheck the exact model against the supported-phone list, verify the required OS and Android location setting, then follow the app’s Bluetooth pairing flow. For imports or firmware, follow the separate Wi-Fi prompts instead of assuming that the glasses use only Bluetooth.
How can you tell when Ray-Ban Meta is recording?
Ray-Ban identifies two different lights: an inward-facing notification LED and a front-facing capture LED. The capture LED is the outward-facing indicator intended to signal to people nearby when the glasses are taking a photo or recording video. It is not the same light as the one used for wearer-facing notifications.
The Ray-Ban FAQ says the capture LED blinks white once for a photo and is solid white while video is recording. Meta’s July 2026 AI glasses FAQ describes the external white light as blinking briefly for a photo and continuing to blink for the duration of video capture. The descriptions differ on the exact video pattern, so the safe general takeaway is that the outward-facing light signals capture; the precise behavior should be understood in the context of the relevant product guidance. Do not assume that every observer will notice the indicator in every environment.
What Meta says about blocking the light
Meta says the capture LED has no off switch. Its July 2026 FAQ also says that beginning with the second generation, the camera is disabled if Meta detects that the LED has been blocked. Meta describes the glasses as being updated to detect physical tampering or destruction of the indicator. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its design and safeguards; they are not an independent privacy audit or a guarantee that every person will see the light.
Capture, storage, and sharing are separate actions
Meta says photos and videos are stored privately on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them to a phone. After import, the files are saved in the phone’s gallery. In practical terms, capturing a file, transferring it to a phone, and sharing it are separate stages in the company’s description. The indicator concerns capture; it does not, by itself, tell someone whether a file has later been imported or shared.

What differs between original Ray-Ban Meta and Gen 2?
The manufacturer figures most relevant to battery expectations differ by generation, while Meta’s Gen 2 announcement also specifies a camera capability. The battery estimates below come from Ray-Ban’s FAQ; the Gen 2 camera detail comes from Meta’s September 2025 announcement.
| Feature | Original Ray-Ban Meta | Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 |
|---|---|---|
| FAQ estimate, moderate use | Up to 4 hours | Up to 8 hours |
| FAQ estimate, continuous audio streaming and voice assistance | Up to 3 hours | Up to 5 hours |
| Video detail in the September 2025 announcement | 3K Ultra HD capture at up to 60 frames per second |
The video specification is not a battery-runtime figure. It does not establish how long a Gen 2 pair can record continuously at 3K, and it should not be used to turn the eight-hour typical-use claim into an eight-hour recording claim. The official material cited here does not provide a continuous-video duration.
Battery estimates alone also do not establish which generation is the better choice for a particular buyer. A purchase decision may depend on factors such as price, availability, fit, and prescription-lens needs, which these cited details do not resolve. For this set of specifications, the clearest comparison is the manufacturer’s stated battery estimates and Gen 2 video capability; it is not a full comparison of cost, fit, or optical options.
How to care for the battery and glasses
If the glasses will be stored for a long time
Ray-Ban’s safety and warranty guide warns that if the battery is not fully recharged every six months from its last use, permanent battery damage could make the product inoperable. This is a long-storage maintenance instruction, not a direction to recharge every six months during ordinary use. If you put the glasses away, keep this interval in mind rather than assuming an unused battery can be left indefinitely.
Keep liquid exposure within the stated limits
The Ray-Ban FAQ lists IPX4 water resistance and says the glasses are not designed for submersion or extended exposure to liquids. The rating should not be interpreted as permission to swim with them or leave them exposed to water for long periods.

What the published figures do—and do not—tell you
The runtime, charging, compatibility, and indicator details above are manufacturer statements from Ray-Ban’s US FAQ, Meta’s July 2026 AI glasses FAQ, Meta’s September 17, 2025 Gen 2 announcement, and Ray-Ban’s safety and warranty guide. They answer common setup and use questions, but they do not amount to independent battery testing or an external assessment of privacy safeguards. Phone support, app behavior, firmware, and regional requirements can change, so verify the current supported-phone list and instructions for your market before relying on a particular handset or setup flow.

Does the eight-hour figure mean eight hours of video recording?
No. The eight-hour figure is an estimate for moderate use in Ray-Ban’s FAQ, while Meta’s 2025 announcement calls it typical use. Neither statement establishes continuous video runtime. The Gen 2 announcement’s 3K Ultra HD capture specification, up to 60 frames per second, describes video capability rather than how long the glasses can record before charging.
Can I use any Android or iPhone that meets the minimum software version?
Not necessarily. Android 10 or later with location services enabled, or iOS 14.4 or later, are the platform requirements Ray-Ban lists, but the company directs users to a separate supported-phone list for exact models. Check your handset against that list and the applicable market requirements before purchase or setup.
Does the recording light stay on while video is being captured?
The outward-facing capture light signals recording, but the official descriptions differ on its exact pattern. Ray-Ban’s FAQ says it is solid white during video; Meta’s July 2026 FAQ says it continues blinking for the duration. Check the guidance for the specific generation, and do not assume every bystander will notice the light.

Can I use any Android or iPhone that meets the minimum software version?
Not necessarily. Ray-Ban lists Android 10 or later with location services enabled, or iOS 14.4 or later, but directs users to a separate supported-phone list for exact models. Check your handset and market requirements before purchase or setup.
Does the recording light stay on while video is being captured?
The outward-facing capture light signals recording, but official descriptions differ on the pattern. Ray-Ban’s FAQ says solid white during video; Meta’s July 2026 FAQ says it continues blinking. Check the guidance for your generation, and do not assume every bystander will notice it.
Do photos automatically appear in my phone gallery?
Meta says captures are stored on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them. After import, they are saved in the phone gallery. Capturing, importing, and sharing are separate steps.
How often should I recharge the glasses during long-term storage?
Ray-Ban’s safety and warranty guide says to fully recharge the battery every six months from last use to help avoid permanent battery damage. This is a long-storage instruction, not a routine interval for everyday use.
The Bottom Line
Ray-Ban Meta battery estimates depend on generation and workload, and none of the stated figures promises a specific continuous-video runtime. For setup, confirm the exact phone on Ray-Ban’s supported list, then use the Meta AI app and follow its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi prompts. The outward-facing capture LED signals photos and video, though the stated video blink pattern differs between official pages.
