The smart gadgets most likely to simplify daily life are the ones that handle a recurring task: switching lights, managing entry, cleaning floors, or keeping entertainment in one place. Here are 16 useful categories—not a product ranking—plus the compatibility, setup, privacy, and maintenance checks that help determine whether each fits your home.
Which smart gadgets can make everyday home routines easier?
Use this list as a set of jobs to consider, not a claim that every connected device is worthwhile. A gadget is useful when it reduces friction in a routine you already have; remote control by itself is not a reason to buy one.
1. Smart plug
Schedule or remotely switch a compatible plug-in appliance, such as a lamp. Check the plug’s electrical rating against the appliance and confirm platform support. Some features may depend on a hub or internet connection.

3. Smart switch or dimmer
Control installed lights without relying on a smart bulb in each fixture. Before buying, check the switch’s wiring requirements, compatibility with your lighting, and local electrical rules; installation may require an electrician.
4. Smart speaker
A speaker can provide voice control for compatible devices and act as a convenient way to start routines. Consider microphone muting and other privacy controls, and check that the devices you want to control work with its platform. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) uses a smart speaker asking a connected thermostat to change a room’s temperature as an example of connected products working together; its smart-products guidance is marked as under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act. Read the ICO’s current guidance.
5. Smart display
A display adds a visual interface for compatible controls, calls, and notifications. Check platform compatibility and whether the screen’s always-available information suits the room where you plan to put it.

6. Robot vacuum
A robot vacuum can handle routine floor cleaning, but results depend on the layout, floor surfaces, clutter, and ongoing maintenance. Look for controls and mapping features that match your home rather than assuming every model navigates the same way. Cleaning capability is one of the dimensions Consumer Reports says it considers when testing robotic vacuums; that does not establish a result for any particular model. See Consumer Reports’ smart-home testing overview.
7. Smart thermostat
Manage compatible heating or cooling from an app or through a connected voice assistant. Verify HVAC compatibility before purchase and check whether installation requires wiring changes or professional help.
8. Smart doorbell
Receive entry alerts and view visitors through a connected doorbell. Check power and connectivity requirements, how recordings are stored, whether ongoing service is required for the features you want, and what privacy controls are available.

A camera can let you check a space remotely. Before adding one, understand where video is stored, who can access it, what account protections are available, and whether remote viewing is a feature you need. Consumer Reports identifies data security as a smart-home testing consideration, not a guarantee about any specific camera.
10. Smart lock
Manage compatible entry access using connected controls. Confirm that the lock fits your door and works with your ecosystem, and decide how you will enter if the battery, network, or app is unavailable.
11. Streaming device
A streaming device can bring supported entertainment apps together on a compatible television. Check the TV’s available connection and the services you actually use; app availability varies by platform.

12. Smart television
A connected television can provide entertainment apps without a separate streaming device. Compare its platform and app availability with your viewing habits, and avoid paying for built-in features you will not use.
13. Smart washing machine
Connected laundry features may let you monitor or control compatible functions from an app. Check whether setup requires Wi-Fi, an account, or specific appliance and app support. Samsung’s SmartThings guide says its app requires Wi-Fi and a Samsung account, and describes monitoring and controlling connected appliances through the app; those requirements apply to that service, not all smart appliances. Read Samsung UK’s SmartThings setup guide.
14. Smart refrigerator
Consider one only when a specific connected feature would improve a routine you have—for example, a feature you would use to monitor or control the appliance. Verify the feature on the exact model and account for app and network requirements. A connected screen or app is not, on its own, a practical benefit.

15. Air-quality monitor
An air-quality monitor is most useful when you have a clear reason to track indoor-air information and a way to respond to what it reports. Check what it measures and whether it works with any compatible ventilation or other device you plan to use; a reading alone does not change room conditions.
16. Fitness tracker
A fitness tracker can put personal activity information in a connected app. Choose it for a specific daily-use purpose, such as reviewing activity, and check phone compatibility, data-sharing settings, and the device’s own limitations. Do not treat a tracker’s readings as medical advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you choose a gadget that fits your home?
- Name the recurring task. Decide what you want to make easier—such as switching a lamp, checking the door, or handling routine floor cleaning—and whether the device addresses that task directly.
- Confirm the ecosystem and hub needs. Check the exact model against your preferred platform, and note whether it needs a hub. Google Home’s compatible-device directory covers categories including lighting and plugs, security, climate, entertainment, and appliances; it says Google Home works with partner and Matter devices. Google also notes that a Matter hub is required for certain setup, control, and away-from-home automation. Check Google Home’s compatible-device directory.
- Check what happens without internet. Find out which controls work locally and which depend on the manufacturer’s cloud, a phone app, or a remote connection. Do not assume a feature remains available offline.
- Review setup and upkeep. Account for installation, app use, charging or cleaning, software updates, and any service needed for the functions you want. Confirm current terms directly with the provider; no current service prices are established here.
- Evaluate privacy and access. Look at what data is collected, where it is stored, who can access it, and which controls let you limit sharing or remote access.
- Check accessibility and daily usability. Consider whether app, voice, physical, or visual controls suit the people who will use the device, and whether the interface is practical in its intended location.
What should you know about compatibility, hubs, and security?
Compatibility is specific to the device, platform, and feature—not just the brand name on the box. A device may work with an ecosystem for basic control but require another component or account for automations, remote access, or particular integrations. Apple, for example, describes controlling a smart plug with Siri and starting a robot vacuum through the Home app or Siri. It says HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV can act as a home hub for remote access and automation. See Apple’s Home app overview.
Matter support can help devices work across supported platforms, but it does not guarantee that every feature works in every setup. Check the exact device listing and whether your home needs a Matter hub for the task you care about.
- Use available software updates to keep connected devices current.
- Switch off remote access if you do not need it.
- Use account protections offered by the device or platform, especially for devices that control entry or expose video.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises users to keep device software updated and switch off remote access when it is not needed. It also says UK rules requiring basic cybersecurity requirements for smart devices took effect on 29 April 2024; that date and rule apply to the UK, not automatically to other countries. Read the NCSC’s smart-device safety guidance.
Which smart home gadgets are best for beginners?
Start with a device tied to one low-friction routine, such as a compatible smart plug for a lamp or a smart bulb for a frequently used light. Check platform support and hub requirements before buying, then add other devices only when you have a clear use for them. If your first choice depends on a hub or wiring changes, factor that setup into the decision rather than treating the gadget as a standalone purchase.
