Smart refrigerators can make food management and energy monitoring more convenient, but they add privacy and software-support questions to an appliance people expect to use for years. The main disadvantages are potential data collection, reliance on apps or online services for some features, and uncertainty about updates and long-term support. The exact trade-offs vary by model; the available evidence does not establish that every smart fridge is insecure, more expensive to repair, or less energy-efficient than a comparable conventional model.

What are the disadvantages of a smart fridge?

  • Privacy and data control: A connected refrigerator or its companion app may request information that users would rather not share. What is collected and how it is handled depend on the product and its services.
  • Dependence on connectivity and software: Remote features may require Wi-Fi, an app account, or a manufacturer’s online service. Those features can be affected by outages, changed software, or discontinued support.
  • Security upkeep: Connected appliances can introduce software vulnerabilities, so update practices and account protection matter. That is a possible risk, not evidence that smart fridges are routinely hacked.
  • Uncertain long-term value: A feature may be useful now but less so if an app or service changes. The available evidence does not establish a general purchase-price or repair-cost premium for smart refrigerators.

These are considerations to check against the particular model, not universal defects. Smart features can also help with food management, door alerts, and energy reporting.

What personal data might a smart fridge collect?

There is no single data profile shared by all smart refrigerators. Information can be associated with the appliance, the manufacturer’s service, or a companion app, and the product’s permissions and privacy terms determine what applies. Do not assume that every model collects the same information or that a particular feature necessarily requires every permission an app requests.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) specifically included Wi-Fi fridges in its June 16, 2025 guidance on smart products. The guidance addresses transparency, collecting only necessary information, and enabling people to exercise rights such as deleting product data. The ICO recommends checking permissions, limiting unnecessary sharing, using strong passwords, keeping software updated, and erasing personal information before disposal. The ICO cited TechUK research that four in five people in Britain own at least one smart product. That figure covers smart products generally; it is not a statistic about smart-fridge ownership. In the same announcement, ICO Executive Director for Regulatory Risk Stephen Almond said: “Smart products know a lot about us: who we live with, what music we like, what medication we are taking and much more. They are designed to make our lives easier, but that doesn’t mean they should be collecting an excessive amount of information.”

What happens if a smart fridge loses Wi-Fi or online support?

The answer depends on which functions rely on a connection. A refrigerator’s basic cooling operation and its connected extras are not the same thing, but you should verify the offline behavior for the exact model rather than assume every feature will continue working—or stop working—without Wi-Fi. Remote monitoring, alerts, inventory tools, or energy reporting may depend on an app, an account, or a vendor service.

Before buying, check the manual and product terms for what works locally, what requires internet access, and what happens if the manufacturer changes or discontinues its service. The OECD has described how manufacturers’ software-support decisions can impede a smart device’s use, while unsupported software can create security risks for the device and the connected-home ecosystem. This is a general smart-home concern, not a documented failure of every refrigerator brand. See the OECD’s discussion of connected-device support.

Can a smart fridge be a cybersecurity or safety risk?

Any connected device can have software vulnerabilities, and an appliance connected to a home network deserves basic account and update hygiene. The risk varies with the product’s implementation and the manufacturer’s support practices. Check whether the maker explains how updates are delivered and whether it provides an update-support commitment; secure the associated account with a strong, unique password and any available additional verification.

Do not confuse a possible vulnerability with proof of a common refrigerator safety failure. The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards’ March 2023 review covered fridge/freezers as well as cookers, dishwashers, tumble dryers, and washing machines. Its modeled estimates of added fire casualties and fatalities concerned assumptions about time-shifted washing machines, tumble dryers, and dishwashers—not refrigerators. The report also noted that connectivity can support remote monitoring, proactive maintenance, and safety improvements, and that no malware incidents compromising appliance safety had been reported at the time it was written. Do smart fridges use more electricity?

The available evidence does not establish that smart refrigerators as a category use more electricity than comparable conventional models. Connected features such as energy reporting or a door-open alert may help a household manage use, but that does not prove lower total consumption. ENERGY STAR also describes optional utility demand-response features for connected appliances with consumer override; those are program and feature examples, not a guarantee that every product sold as smart has them. See ENERGY STAR’s connected-product criteria.

Compare the energy label or verified consumption for the exact models you are considering. In the United States, manufacturers have been required to comply with energy conservation standards for refrigeration products since 1990, but that regulatory background does not establish the efficiency of a particular smart model. See the U.S. Department of Energy’s appliance standards program.

Are smart fridges worth it?

They may be worthwhile when their connected features solve a real household problem—for example, checking a door alert while away, using food-management tools, or viewing energy information. Canada’s privacy commissioner has also noted that smart fridges can help prevent food spoilage and save consumers money. These are possible benefits, not guaranteed savings for every household or model. Read the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s discussion.

For a practical comparison, evaluate the models rather than treating “smart” as a uniform specification:

What to compare What to check
Connectivity Which features work without Wi-Fi, an app account, or the manufacturer’s service?
Privacy What information does the appliance or app request? Can optional sharing be disabled and stored data erased?
Security and support Does the manufacturer describe update support and account protections?
Energy use What is the exact model’s rated or verified consumption?
Price and repair What are the current price, warranty, parts, and repair terms for each model? A general smart-fridge premium is not established by the available evidence.
Feature value Will remote monitoring, alerts, food-management features, or energy reporting solve a need in your household?

A useful decision rule is to pay attention to features you expect to use and to treat app, privacy, and support terms as part of the product—not as afterthoughts.
